The 2008 Hockey season has proved to be both exciting and encouraging.
We began with our inaugural tour of Malaysia, which will hopefully become a permanent feature of the College calendar. We took nineteen Year 11 and 12 boys to Malaysia to play hockey against boys who play a very different style of hockey in conditions very different to those experienced here. We started poorly but in the time we were away the boys rose to the challenge and in the final two games we were highly competitive.

After returning from Malaysia we were much tighter as a group and thought that we would have a real chance to finish high in the rankings on the PSA ladder, however, that was not to be. We probably let ourselves down in a couple of games and I am sure that the 1st XI will be a little disappointed with their final position of fourth. The Year 12 representatives in the 1st XI this year were Tom Coates, Captain, Aaron Shepherdson Vice Captain, Seve Pratico, Scott Sumner, Francis Staude, Brendan Lally, Harvey Fernandes, Hugo Seymour and James O’Hara.
Unfortunately we will be losing our coach of the past two years, Graham Reid (“Poss”). Graham has recently been appointed Assistant Coach of the Australian Hockey Team. We would like to thank him for all that he has done for us over the last two years and wish him well with the Australian team. He will be sorely missed.
On the other hand, the 2nd XI had one of their best seasons in recent times. The team, led by Luke Mancini, defeated all opponents except Scotch in winning six of its ten games and finishing equal second. The team had great strength in defence, a solid midfield and a forward line which functioned well in scoring 24 goals. Well done to all boys on their dedication to training and playing the game with great spirit. Hopefully in 2009 many of these young men can take this desire to win into the 1st XI.
The 3rd XI also had a reasonably successful year and participated with enthusiasm and really enjoyed their season. Once again I would like to thank Colleen Wheeler for her energy and efforts in getting this team to be such a close unit who always seem to put in the best they can on a week-to-week basis.
Once again in Years 8, 9 and 10 we have struggled for numbers in hockey. Across all three year groups we have some very talented players ably led by coaches who always try to get the best out of these boys, but as has happened for the past few years we are let down by the fact we do not get enough boys to play. Players like Tom Metcalf, Luke Screaigh, Dan Carton, and Matt Hawgood, to name a few, all have the potential to play in the 1st XI in the near future. I hope that in 2009 we can encourage more boys to join the Trinity College Hockey teams.

Hockey Tour – Malaysia

During the April holidays nineteen Year 11 and 12 Hockey players, Miss Pagoda, Mrs Wilson and Graham Reid (1st XI Hockey Coach) went to Kuala Lumpur for eight days. We played five games of hockey, one against a team from a Malaysian school, and the others against district and State teams. The standard of the competition was extremely high, with the Malaysian teams really giving our boys a lesson in a different, much faster, way of playing hockey. We started slowly in the first game (especially as we had only arrived in KL that day on the midnight flight), and gradually improved with every game. We won one game out of the five, but were competitive in all but the first game.

On the middle day we visited an orphanage and a home for elderly and disabled people. The boys spent some playing with the children and communicating with the elderly and disabled people. We donated some clothes, toys and money to these people. On the last two days we did some sightseeing, including China Town, Petronas Twin Towers, the KL Tower, Batu Caves, the Palace and finally Sunway Lagoon Theme Park.

The boys got the chance to experience the culture of a different country, play a very high standard of hockey in conditions that were extremely hot and humid, take part in some community service, see firsthand how privileged they really are, and become much closer with the other boys in the team.

I would like to particularly thank Graham Reid and Janelle Pagoda who gave up their own time to spend the time with the boys on the tour, and Hari and Terry, our two Malaysian guides. Hopefully this can become a permanent part of the College calendar.
