Swimming

After the euphoria of the triumphant 2007 campaign, it was always going to be difficult to pull our socks up and get into the swing of 2008. Nevertheless, training commenced as usual in Term 4 and the attendances were strong. The new captain of swimming, Stuart

Mr Dion Mepham Aquatics Specialist Love, was busy maintaining the enthusiasm in the troops and the standard of training had improved. The first event on the 2008 calendar, the Schools and Colleges relays, came quickly with many of the Trinity teams performing strongly. The Junior School entered this competition for the first time with great results. Trinity were placed third overall in the event, winning a number of silver medals. Six weeks into the season and the team competed in the Quads. We were all aware that Christ Church and Wesley were gunning for us, having stolen their thunder in the previous year; however, we felt that we were well prepared and focused. After a great start to the competition Trinity faded to third, despite some memorable performances from Jakeb Norman, Luke Pardini and newcomer Jayden Marciano. Taylor Colton and NJ Cartagena were very competitive in their Under 16 events and the Under 16 relays managed to swim strongly.

Luke Pardini was unlucky to miss a PSA record in the 50m Butterfly, however between James Ballard and himself, they won the first division 50m Breaststroke and Butterfly events. The Under 15 relays, as usual, were a force to be reckoned with, winning one relay and coming second in two others by less than a tenth of a second.

The Under 14 and Under 13 teams performed strongly, but were significantly outclassed by much stronger opposition. Jayden Marciano and Marcus Ruggiero were stand outs in their age group, but overall, we lacked depth and potency.

Despite our best efforts on the night, we were beaten by a much stronger Christ Church and Wesley. As a result of a few late disqualifications from the TC team, Hale were third and Trinity fourth. These three schools have obviously improved their program and swam very well.

Many thanks must go to the coaching team for this year, Mr Peter Duckett, Rob Sharp and Corey McIntosh, gave up their time voluntarily to instill excellent skills into the team. The leadership team of Stuart Love, Xavier Foley, Michael Mamo and Jakeb Norman are to be commended on their leadership of the team this year. We will also miss the characters on the team, Kane Lucas, James Logan, Damian Leipold, Travis Colyer, Matthew Bannister, Alex Hardie and others. Good luck with your future boys.

To the 2009 team, it is incumbent on us to regroup, get serious and become the ambassadors for swimming that we know we can be.

This was not a big concern for the team, given that we finished in the same position in 2007.

The Inters were held on March 23rd and the build up to the event was very special. The boys were intent on producing their best performance and the warm up, team photos and movie were memorable.

When the bus arrived at Challenge Stadium, the captains gathered the team and stressed the importance of maintaining concentration on skill and pride in performance. Once the competition started, the crowd was treated to some of the most outstanding swimming at PSA level ever.

Our Open swimmers, so long the carriers of the flame for TC swimming, achieved an astonishing level of performance. Xavier Foley astounded the crowd with his best ever times in the 100m Freestyle and 50 Butterfly and Jakeb Norman won three first division events, 100 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke and 200 Freestyle.
