President Joel Peinado’s Address to the Class of ‘23
“Graduates, 15 years ago you have embarked on an educational voyage that has transformed not only your minds but also your characters. You have encountered diverse perspectives, overcome challenges, and expanded your horizons. In the face of adversity, you have shown strength and resilience, refusing to be defined by the obstacles that stood in your path. Today, as you stand on the edge of a new chapter, I urge you to carry forward the values and lessons you have learned within these walls and become the responsible and caring leaders the IC mission and values stand for; do well and do good.
Lebanon, a nation that has faced its own share of trials, has constantly taught us that in a world often divided by boundaries and differences, it is crucial to embrace diversity and build bridges of understanding. Remember that your education has not only equipped you with knowledge but also with the responsibility to make a positive impact on your communities and society at large. Each of you possesses the ability to be a catalyst for change, to foster understanding, and to create a more equitable world.
As you step into the unknown, do not fear the uncertainties that lie ahead. Instead, view them as opportunities for growth, innovation, and transformation. Embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity that is deeply embedded in Lebanon’s heritage. Draw inspiration from the resilience and the creativity of this land and its people, who have time and again risen from the ashes to rebuild and reimagine a brighter future. Let the challenges you face ignite within you a passion for
progress and a determination to forge a better world. In the pursuit of your dreams, remember to cultivate empathy and compassion. The world needs leaders who are not only knowledgeable but also compassionate, who can navigate complexity with a sense of humanity and understanding. Reach out to those in need, lend a helping hand, and advocate for justice and equality. In doing so, you will discover that true fulfillment lies not in personal achievements alone but in the positive impact you can have on the lives of others.
Graduates, as you prepare to leave IC, remember that your education does not end here and that Learning is a lifelong journey; cherish the friendships and memories forged during your time with your IC family; Stay connected through the ICAA, support one another, and celebrate each other’s successes. Together, you can create a powerful network of changemakers, each making their mark on the world in unique and meaningful ways.
Finally, as you are concluding your journey at IC, I would like you to acknowledge those who supported you, encouraged you, and put you back on the path of improvement and learning when you erred away from it: your parents and your teachers.
In conclusion, I would like now to send you off with this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt:
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Pursue your dreams and make us proud!
Congratulations! Mabrouk! Felicitations! »

Field Trip
On Thursday, June 8th, the Nursery students went on a field trip to Dbayeh Country Club. They had a chance to see horses up close, and they observed their characteristics and identified their needs. Students also came to understand how animals are cared for. They got a chance to feed them, ride them, and visit the stables where they sleep.
Creating Stories
During the language-based unit, How We Express Ourselves, GS students took on the task of building a frame of reference for a story they’re creating. They built tracks, castles, and gardens while using manipulatives of animals and persons to create and animate characters. The students engaged in co-creating stories and pooling ideas together. The result was highly entertaining stories that were presented to their classmates. This activity allowed the students to develop their English vocabulary and explore the relationship between language, imagination, and creation.

Great Inventors
Sports are very essential in people’s lives. They play a significant role in promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and overall well-being. Throughout history, various sports inventions have developed the way athletes train, compete, and perform. These advancements have not only enhanced the quality of sports but have also pushed the boundaries of human potential.
As part of the Grade 4 inquiry learning and as a provocation in the UOI unit How We Express Ourselves, Grade 4 learners became inventors
themselves. During PE, they were asked to create a sports tool that can be used to hit a ball into a goal. The tool had to be similar to a racket that can be used instead of the traditional one to play sports such as tennis, softball, badminton, squash, and many other sports that require a racket.
Using different profile attributes along with different provided materials to create their new inventions, Grade 4 students came up with different sports equipment. Their inventions were really amazing and beyond expectations.

Grade 5 A: Tannourine Nature Reserve
Our 5th graders were excited to go on a field trip on June 9th to Tannourine to hike in its Nature Reserve which is around 1,600 meters above sea level! There, they were accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who explained the flora and fauna of such a beautiful reserve.
Students experienced many changes in emotions on that day and related them to character changes of emotions in a novel they were reading in class! They were so excited that they were inquiring outside their classroom. However, upon discovering that reaching the reserve required a two-hour trip, they were shocked and started worrying about how they would be trapped on the bus for that long. What if they had to use the bathroom during that time? Would they be able to sleep or not on the bus? When we reached the reserve, students felt so relieved that they could finally walk and run in beautiful nature.
The hike was supposed to be one hour long, yet it took around two hours since the guide had to stop at
a few checkpoints to explain about the reserve and its characteristics. Students started expressing how tired they were. Finally, when they left the reserve, they were happy to reach school, and they actually explained the highlight of their visit!
They were all inspired by the Shakira Square found in the reserve. The guide explained that they named that part of the reserve after the famous singer Shakira, since every year, she visits Tannourine Nature Reserve to plant a new cedar tree there.
The students were so inspired by her action that they requested to play her songs on the bus to express admiration for her!

Parent Mentors in the PYP Exhibition
The PYP exhibition is an important milestone in a student’s educational journey. Involving parent mentors can greatly improve the fifth-grade learning experience.
The “Tuning-in Phase” prepares students to deepen their understanding of the central idea. Parent mentors supported their children by participating in conversations and discussing areas of interest. These conversations included topics such as animal abuse, sustainable cities, food waste, and the importance of sports for physical and mental health.
During the “Research Phase”, students gathered information from various sources such as books, articles, and interviews. Parent mentors supported children by facilitating the research, finding relevant resources, and conducting interviews with experts in their chosen fields. For example, the “Sports” group interviewed an expert in extreme sports and found many answers regarding the difference between individual sports and collaborative sports. During the “Sorting out Phase”, parent mentors helped children categorize information and create visual representations such as tables and mind maps. Through these discussions, mentors encouraged critical thinking and helped students connect information. For example, the “Food Waste” group visited the school cafeteria to establish a connection between the issue of food waste and how the school cafeteria is addressing this issue. In the “Going Further Phase”, students and mentors explored their issues by participating in field trips and connecting with the community.
For example, the animal abuse group interviewed a veterinarian and visited an animal shelter to learn more about this issue. In the “Conclusion Phase”, students came up with a conclusion that summed up all their learning. Parent mentors played a key role in encouraging children to reflect on the information collected and draw informed conclusions.
The PYP exhibition emphasizes taking action on real-life problems. Parent mentors guided students in developing their action plans, brainstorming possible solutions, and implementing initiatives within their communities. Encouraging student agency empowered students to create positive change in their communities. For example, the Sustainable Cities group has started raising money to create green spaces in their communities.
Collaboration between students, teachers, and parental mentors fosters a rich learning experience for students to become lifelong learners and agents of change.

Art Festival 2023
This year, the students prepared different projects for the Art Festival.
Each level worked on an art piece that was related to a unit of inquiry.
G1 & CP students worked on flower sculptures inspired by the artist Yayoi Kusama’s flower sculptures. This was in relation to the unit of inquiry Sharing the Planet.
Students of KG2 and GS worked on a big canvas that represented the story of Swimmy. This project was connected to their unit of inquiry “How We Express Ourselves” which involves stories and how they could be told. One way to tell a story is through visual text, and in the case of art, it could be through artworks. Students worked with recycled water bottles in the shape of a fish which were later painted. Then, they learned the printing technique and did drawings from the story and printed them on the big canvas.
Students of KG1 & MS worked on stick figures with
body expressions as part of their unit of inquiry “How We Express Ourselves”. This is to help them understand the different forms of expression. The three figures were built with recycled water bottles, masking tape, and the paper maché technique. They were later painted and decorated in different colors.
Nursery and PS students chose to make animal sculptures in relation to Sharing the Planet. The animals’ shapes were designed and cut using wood. The students decorated the animals with paint, paper cut-outs, and mosaics.
Students made beautiful artworks and learned different techniques.
Finally, the opening of the Art Festival “IC Art” took place on Wednesday 7 June at IC Ras Beirut Campus.

Family STEAM Day
Throughout the year, our KGII and GS students have engaged in various STEAM projects, where they went through the stages of the design process to create a prototype to solve a particular problem or to take action as a result of their inquiry. To celebrate their hard work, parents were invited for a day of exploration and learning during Family STEAM Days on May 18 and 19. The event was a resounding success, fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity among our young learners and their families. Throughout the 2 days, KGII and GS families immersed themselves in a wide array of hands-on STEAM activities, and design challenges. The event started with a 15-minute introduction by Mrs. Najah Sakr, the Ed. Tech Coordinator, where she provided the parents with a quick overview of the why and how of STEAM education, explained the day’s purpose, reviewed the expectations, and presented the tasks at each station. After that, the parents joined their children to decide on a design challenge to engage in.
The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as children and their loved ones collaborated, problem-solved, and engaged in critical thinking to tinker, make and engineer. To wrap up the session, the students and their parents reconvened to share their creations and reflect on the learning experience and the challenges that they faced. This interactive experience provided a unique opportunity for families to bond
while nurturing a love for STEAM disciplines. We are grateful for the enthusiastic participation and support from our parents, as they play an invaluable role in inspiring and encouraging their children’s educational journeys. We look forward to more enriching family events in the future, as we continue to nurture a love for learning and exploration.

Family Sports Day
If you passed by Preschool Ras Beirut on June 1,2 and 5, you would have seen our young athletes showcasing how they have developed not only on the physical level but also on the social-emotional as well. Family Sports Day was a great opportunity for parents to engage with their children in different games: supporting them, taking pictures, cheering … and many times playing the games themselves. Children started the session by leading a “warm up” that engaged group members. You could see
parents and children stretching, warming up their muscles, doing jumping jacks, and frog jumps. After that, parents and children visited different games and finally wrapped up the day with a relay race.
Everyone on the field supported and celebrated how the children confidently unveiled their physical abilities along with their agility, fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Moving Up Ceremony
Joy and emotion filled the air during our moving up ceremony from Grade 5 to Grade 6. Students, parents, and teachers gathered to celebrate this momentous occasion, marking a significant milestone in the lives of our young learners.
The day was filled with excitement as students showcased their singing talents and proudly received their moving up certificates. Our esteemed elementary school director delivered an inspiring speech, reminding students to hold on to the valuable attributes of being risk takers, open minded, inquirers and much more that they gained throughout
their elementary school years . She encouraged them to keep global issues close to their hearts and to remember the impact they made through their PYP X projects.
As we bid farewell to our Grade 5 students and welcome them into Grade 6, we are confident in their ability to thrive and succeed. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to parents and teachers for their unwavering support. Together, let us celebrate this moving up ceremony as a testament to the growth, achievements, and bright futures that lie ahead for our remarkable students.

UNICEF’s Discussion about Child Labor
As part of the interdisciplinary grade 9 project, child labor was chosen as a social injustice that students wanted to address in Social Studies. This topic was linked to the Industrial Revolution and to Lebanon. Ms. Jackline Atwi, UNICEF Child Protection National Officer, was invited to lead a discussion with grade 9 students about child labor
Debate led by Dr. Helou
Dr. Joseph Helou, an IC alumni and assistant professor of political science and international affairs at LAU, led a debate among a group of grade 9 MSRB students about the various political ideologies that emerged in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. Some students argued in favor of capitalism, highlighting its emphasis on free markets and limited government intervention.Others defended socialism and communism, stressing the need to address societal inequalities. Throughout the debate, students were challenged to evaluate the pros and cons of each ideology and were encouraged to make connections between them.
in Lebanon and how students can play an active role in preventing it. The session aimed at raising awareness and educating the students about the importance of child protection. The discussion also highlighted the causes of child labor and its impact throughout history.

Fossils: A Story of the Past
The Grade 6 field trip was so amazing. We learned about fossil formation and found our fossils by digging and cracking rock to find them. To learn more about our experience join us for a recap of this extraordinary exploration.
It all started when our science teacher Miss May El Hariri informed us that we will be starting a new lesson about fossils. She told us as our introductory activity we will be going on a field trip to “Expo Hakel” to gain background knowledge about fossils. (6C and 6D went on Monday June 12 with Mrs May el Hariri and 6A and 6B went on Tuesday June 13 with Mrs Dima el Husseini)
On the day of the trip, everyone was so excited about the trip and all of us got snacks. During the ride, we all had so much fun listening to music and exchanging jokes. Once we arrived, we were offered a warm welcome and were given a seat for a presentation. During the presentation, we explored many aspects of fossils and general things by asking questions. We watched five videos, some were about sedimentary rocks, fossil formation, tectonic plates, and areas where fossils can be found. After that, they explained the history of the place and how they have many samples of fossils numbering in the hundreds, specifically more than 370. Also, they explained the process of how they studied, excavated, and repaired some fossils in a neat and creative presentation.
Once the presentation was over we had a tour of the place. We asked many questions about different fossils but best of all we were given a
detailed explanation of every fossil and some very interesting pieces of information.
As soon as the tour was over we embarked on our little adventure for 30 minutes that spanned 1.5 kilometers long. Once we reached the quarry we took some pictures. In addition to that, they explained how to find fossils and where they can be found. As if simultaneously, we all lined up in a straight line waiting to get the chisel and hammer to start our hunt for fossils. Many struggled at first but in the end, many of us ended up with more than one fossil and some up to four. We placed the selected stone between our legs and placed the chisel and hammered it slowly until it broke.
After having so much fun we finally returned to school and continued our work normally and always remembering that astonishing day.

Final Year Project Alice in Wonderland (Alternative Ending) Performance
Grade 6
As part of their Final Year Project, grade 6 students create and perform a story ending. Students practice using their creative, critical thinking, writing, speaking, and listening skills to plan a different story ending for an original book discussed in their last unit for the year on Imagination.
The goal of the project is to write and present a stage performance that creatively provides an alternative ending for Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland original book. Thinking about character motivations, characterization, and using literary devices that creatively present the plot, students take responsibility in presenting work that is cooperative, creative, and logical.
This prepares the students to understand the importance of imagination in helping create great things in life where they explore where and how the imagination of every single individual matters and adds value to someone else’s and how it can change a person’s fate for the good or bad, even if it’s just a character in a story.

2 Campuses, 1 Heart, 1 Art
June 7th was the opening of the 26th Art Festival, A tribute to… which has added colors to the RB campus
The exhibition paid tribute to our students. Showcasing that they belong to a community that values the arts and creativity, the key to all success.
A tribute to our Lebanese culture and to artists that remain a source of our inspiration.
But first and foremost, a tribute to the people that look after our IC community, quietly: the security, the cleaning team, the physical plant: the carpenters, the seamstress… and the supervisors, to name only a few…
These are the people of our community to whom the department decided to pay tribute and say thank you in their own way.
The festival was the joint effort of all Art teachers
from both AA and RB campuses who have worked relentlessly for days to execute the setup.
Mrs. Mona Nashawati, Mrs. Rola Abaza (PreSch, R.B), Mrs. Layla Kateurji Hamasni , Mrs. Tania Mouammar Rowel, Mrs. Aida El Sheikh (Elem. R.B.), Ms. Melissa Bou Chaaya (Middle R.B), Ms. Renwa Jeha (Middle R.B), Ms. Maya Tabbara (Middle/Sec, R.B), Mrs. Joumana Bou Khaled (Sec), Ms. Nathalie Hachem (Middle A.A, Sec R.B), Ms. Rim Boulos (Middle A.A), Ms. Raphaella Matta (PreSch/Elem. A.A) with the overeiing of Mrs. Carine Arayssi Saad (Sec. /Head of Art).
The art department would also like to thank the physical plant, the administration, and the workers, especially Shuayto and Mustafa. Last and not least all of this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Mr. Peinado, Mrs. Mufarrij, and all the directors.

Preserving Native Lebanese Species - Nursery/PS
After inquiring into the characteristics of Lebanese wild animal species as part of their unit of inquiry “Sharing the Planet”, PS/Nursery students in Ain Aar decided to take action and produced digital picture books about the Rock Hyrax (Tabsoun) species’ characteristics and habitat, and our responsibility towards preserving this rare and endangered animal.
In turn, following their inquiry into how animals adapt to their habitat to grow and survive and inspired by the story “Greta and the Giants”, Nursery A students decided to take action by making banners to raise awareness about how we are responsible for preserving animals’ habitats so that they can survive. They presented their work to the KG1 students. Another group of students from Nursery A created bird feeders and hung them around campus as a way of showing empathy and care toward birds in their community.

A Green Wall - KG1 / MS
As part of their unit of inquiry “How the World Works”, KG1 and Moyenne Section students in Ain Aar inquired into the different types of materials, their properties, and how people manipulate them to meet their needs and wants in a responsible manner. By the end of the unit, students gained an understanding of how material reuse (upcycling) can be a sustainable and creative solution
for reducing waste and creating new objects. On another hand, students inquired into the characteristics of plants and their importance in sustaining life on Earth as part of their unit of inquiry “Sharing the Planet”. After reflecting on both understandings, they decided to take action by creating a green wall at school, made from reused plastic bottles and planted with rosemary.
As part of their unit of inquiry “How the World works”, GS A and GS B learners in Ain Aar explored the properties of light and sound and their importance in our daily lives. To give meaning to their learning, they decided to take action and created, in Arabic, a digital book titled “تــفتخا

Community Support Projects Following the Service Learning Approach
Two class projects were based on lesson plans following the service learning approach.
The first project was designed and implemented by Tl 3 students based on a theme in the History course: “Pollution of Seas and Oceans”. Students tackled the issue of pollution and recycling in Lebanon, more specifically on the school campus, and decided to deal with the recycling of plastic bottles in school. To that end, they designed and manufactured, with the help of the Physical Plants team, a recycle bin, displayed in front of the IC cafeteria to encourage the school community to recycle their water-plastic bottles. 1re 3 students joined the seniors with the efforts and worked on a video to explain the initiative and its objectives and to spread awareness on the topic of recycling. The second service learning project was conducted by 1re 5 students based on a lesson plan in “Education Morale et Civique” (EMC) on social inequality, more specifically the inequality between education in public schools and private
schools. Students visited Laure Moghaizel Public School, met with students, and listened to the challenges and struggles they faced during this academic year. As a result, students wrote an article to highlight the inequalities between public and private schools. The article is a plea to call for immediate action to save education in public schools in Lebanon.

Civic Commitment and Service Learning
