Fossils: A Story of the Past

The Grade 6 field trip was so amazing. We learned about fossil formation and found our fossils by digging and cracking rock to find them. To learn more about our experience join us for a recap of this extraordinary exploration.

It all started when our science teacher Miss May El Hariri informed us that we will be starting a new lesson about fossils. She told us as our introductory activity we will be going on a field trip to “Expo Hakel” to gain background knowledge about fossils. (6C and 6D went on Monday June 12 with Mrs May el Hariri and 6A and 6B went on Tuesday June 13 with Mrs Dima el Husseini)

On the day of the trip, everyone was so excited about the trip and all of us got snacks. During the ride, we all had so much fun listening to music and exchanging jokes. Once we arrived, we were offered a warm welcome and were given a seat for a presentation. During the presentation, we explored many aspects of fossils and general things by asking questions. We watched five videos, some were about sedimentary rocks, fossil formation, tectonic plates, and areas where fossils can be found. After that, they explained the history of the place and how they have many samples of fossils numbering in the hundreds, specifically more than 370. Also, they explained the process of how they studied, excavated, and repaired some fossils in a neat and creative presentation.

Once the presentation was over we had a tour of the place. We asked many questions about different fossils but best of all we were given a detailed explanation of every fossil and some very interesting pieces of information.

As soon as the tour was over we embarked on our little adventure for 30 minutes that spanned 1.5 kilometers long. Once we reached the quarry we took some pictures. In addition to that, they explained how to find fossils and where they can be found. As if simultaneously, we all lined up in a straight line waiting to get the chisel and hammer to start our hunt for fossils. Many struggled at first but in the end, many of us ended up with more than one fossil and some up to four. We placed the selected stone between our legs and placed the chisel and hammered it slowly until it broke.

After having so much fun we finally returned to school and continued our work normally and always remembering that astonishing day.
