Competition:
This is a working document outlining the requirements and constraints for a design. It will outline the market demands of a specific product.
Other design-focused giftware outlets such as museum shops and handmade gift websites.
This PDS is based upon the Jensen consulting template.
The product must include as high proportion of recycled material as possible. Aim to make sure the product is 100% recyclable or reusable, including designing for easy repair. All packaging must be 100% recyclable.
Performance: The product should serve a purpose, rather then be purely ornamental. This means my product will not add to the amount of useless items that inevitably go into landfill. Economy: £50 making budget from GSA, and 2 rounds of free, high end 3D printing from HP. Product should have midend artisan gift pricing in line with other PDE collection items. These usually range from £15 - £45 Customer: My potential customer would be wanting to purchase a relatively expensive, artisan gift. Due to this, they’d have a good amount of disposable income. Usually this would line up with 30-65 year old middle class adults. Furthermore, the customer would need enjoy product design, and design in general to be able to find the digital storefront of the GSA shop. They would possibly be local to Glasgow or a alumni of GSA.
Environment:
Dimensions: As the POS is online, the product should be able to be shipped. This means care must be given to make the product as light as possible, without sacrificing the tactility. Furthermore, design time should be given into looking into flat-packing and designing around standard shipping sizes.
giftware items, there should be an element of tactility and playfulness in the object. Appearance: The product should fit in with the clean aesthetic of the PDE collection. This could be done by using a limited material palette, as well as using strong contrast in black, white and greys. Packaging: The packaging should also conform to the aesthetic of the PDE collection, with use of laser cut recycled cardboard as well as the PDE collection 6 logo. Safety: The product should conform to relevant safety guidelines given its intended purpose.
Material: No jesmonite. Thought should be given to the tactility of the chosen materials, as well as the longevity. New and alternate materials should be researched, as this is a small scale production, non-traditional materials are easier to integrate. Ergonomics: The product should be pleasant to use.
