Tennis T
he 2003 Tennis season has been one of rebuilding with many changes in playing and coaching personnel. There was not a great deal of success on court this year, but the spirit and sportsmanship that developed during the year meant that in many ways this year can be seen as one of our best ever. The discipline of the boys at training and their willingness to play at their best each week despite some lopsided score lines was a credit to all. The First VIII despite only having one win for the season was a very competitive unit, with a blend of youth and experience. The team consisted of four Year Twelves, three Year Elevens and one Year Ten. Our captain Jon Bowley provided good leadership on and off the court. Special mention must be made to Jamie Birrell who was the only team member able to win at least one set in all of our matches. With some new young blood next year, the light at the end of the tunnel continues to get brighter. The 2nd VIII tennis team had an excellent and enjoyable season. In all the fixtures the team played with commitment, enthusiasm and great sporting spirit. The results of the 3rd VIII tennis do not portray an accurate picture of the season. The team was highly competitive and forced their opponents to fight for every match. This season was great for Year Ten tennis and the spirit shown was nothing less than inspirational. Although finishing fifth, and winning three games, the team always put in spirited performances. This was a successful season for all Year Nine teams because they learned to be competitive and many
“fringe” players forced their way into the main teams. Through a lot of hard work the A’s lost only one match for Trinity’s best tennis result in many years.
Summer Sport
In the Year Eight season, relatively inexperienced A and B squads had some great success and won half their fixtures. The boys showed courage, determination and good sportsmanship throughout the season. We are now starting to build a base to launch tennis back to the dizzy heights of the eighties. Across all teams the boys always had an enjoyable time playing and on all occasions showed excellent sportsmanship. Many thanks go to all parents who came out to support their sons and cheer the teams on. Special thanks to the senior mums for providing the best morning teas in the PSA. Congratulations to all the boys for their effort and commitment this year and we look forward to next year. Thank you to Mrs McGibbon, Mrs Lane, Mr Duffy, Ms Mizen, Mr Rousset, Mrs Prior, Mr Connell and Mrs Kauhanen for their coaching efforts and support this year. A very special thank you must go to Mr Ian Walker for his tireless effort and specialised coaching for each of the A teams, with Ian’s continued support Trinity tennis is assured future success. Each of these coaches remarked on the co-operation and behaviour of their teams. All players proved worthy ambassadors of Trinity College. Simon Messer First VIII Coach
