Winter Sport

Despite the problems of having to replace the coach one week before the first game, when Peter Butler was offered a coaching position in Malaysia, the First XI got off to a great start beating Guildford 3-1. New coach Steve Neville quickly gelled with the boys and continued with the early morning training sessions. A win away to Wesley and a draw with Christchurch followed but in the fourth round the team suffered their only loss going down 2-1 to Hale. Wins over Scotch and Aquinas followed and restored the team’s belief that they could regain the Lawe Davies Cup. Two wins and a draw in the next three games set up a final game at home to Hale where a win would secure a share in the trophy. In a close and exciting game, the result was 1-1 and for the second year Trinity College First XI finished second. Congratulations to all the players, but especially team captain Alex Phelan, who was the leading goal-scorer, and to the goalkeeper Matthew Rootsey who pulled off some magnificent saves.

In the other age groups all teams performed well with no team finishing lower than third in their division. A special mention must go to the Year 8A team who won their competition finishing with nine wins in nine games. Our thanks go to Steve Neville who stepped in at the last minute to coach both the First XI and the 8A teams.
