The Trinity College Cricket season for 2002/2003 was filled with mixed performances; however there were many highlights. In the Newson Cup in Term Four 2002, the First XI team won three of its four games, the only team to do so. This included a comfortable win over eventual Darlot winners, Wesley. The College also had a very successful tour to Nudgee College, Queensland in January where a group of thirty four boys from Years Ten to Twelve participated in Australia’s largest Catholic schools competition. Here we were divided into two equal teams. We were the youngest team in the competition and were placed in the strongest division. Both teams performed very well just missing out on the finals. The trip was an outstanding opportunity for all the boys to bond and I’m sure it is one we will all remember.
When we returned we were all excited about the first term competition and were quietly confident after being the most successful First XI team in fourth term. Wedid not have the success we expected. Some individual highlights included Michael Embley’s 7-wicket haul against Wesley and also his entertaining 72 not out against Hale, TJ Dennis’ 86 against Wesley and Preston O’Keefe’s 5/38 against Scotch.
However, it was our batting that let us down this year with not enough players going on to make the big scores that are needed in games that last 180 overs. It is a credit to the team that we never gave up even in extremely difficult times which showed real Trinity spirit. The future of cricket at Trinity looks very strong. This is evident with the promising performances from the teams through the lower years and also the fact that nine players who represented the First XI this year are eligible to play again next year. A special thankyou to all the parents for the time and effort in taking boys to the games and the tireless work in the kitchen to keep up Trinity’s proud tradition as the best school when it comes to afternoon tea and lunches.
On behalf of all the Firsts I would like to thank Mr Tobin for all of his time and effort in passing on valuable cricket skills and knowledge.
Callum Johnson Captain First XI
