Cross Country
2003 was an outstanding season for the Senior Cross Country Team, which succeeded in asserting its dominance of this sport by decisively winning the PSA Championship and becoming backto-back winners of the P.M. Moyes Cup. I attribute this excellent result to the spirit of the team whose determination and will to win never waned. The coaches and support staff strived to foster an atmosphere of mutual affirmation, support and dedication that aimed to assist each boy in achieving the personal goals that he had set himself. All members were encouraged to strive for success based on their own goals and always to be supportive of the efforts of all the team, not just the top fifteen runners.
Mr. Phil Jurjevich, the inspirational Head Coach of both the Junior and Senior Teams, challenged the boys to seize every opportunity to reach deep into their inner selves to find the strength and courage that would sustain them during the competition. His philosophy was simple – the only true indication of success was to know that on the day each member of the team had stepped up to the challenge and given as much as he could possibly give and then no matter the result, each boy would be a winner. The coaching staff of Mr. Jurjevich, Mr. Geagea and a dedicated group of old boys lead by Mr. Daniel Privilege ensured that Trinity produced a formidable team that conceded only one loss during the season. David Rossbach was again our best runner, with outstanding performances from Joel & Brennan Cummuskey, David Slack-Smith, Chris Dendle, Chris Gibson and Alessio Di Biaggio. Trinity’s strength lay in its depth and size with no other school being able to match the consistent speed of our top fifteen runners, supported on every occasion by the boys just outside the top fifteen. The team was also supported by an outstanding group of Junior runners who were promoted to Senior level, all of whom demonstrated great courage and determination against boys twice their size. Matt Snow, an exceptional athlete, was not only the best Junior runner coming first in three of the Junior All Schools Events, but was also ranked as the sixth fastest runner within the Senior Team. Well done, Matt. This year David Rossbach retained the Hasting’s 5.8km Bridges Cup for the third year in a row. David’s commitment to his sport and his continued motivation of other team members are to be commended as are the efforts of Joel Cummuskey, the Team Captain, who was awarded the King Of the Mountain Endurance Award and Alessio Di Biaggio, one of the Vice Captains who retained the Stephen Spier’s Effort Trophy. 2003 also saw the introduction of the Agincourt Award that was presented to the boy whose performance for the year was deemed exceptional as judged by his peers. In its inaugural year this trophy was awarded to Joel Cummuskey and David Rossbach. Congratulations to these boys! It has been a privilege this year to work with such an outstanding group of athletes. However, special mention must be made of the contributions and leadership of the Year Twelve students within the squad. This group of young men were indeed the backbone of the team, respected by all. Thanks to The Team Captain Joel Cummuskey, who was well supported by the two Vice Captains, Alessio Di Biaggio and Alex Meegan. We will miss their leadership and dedication. It was also great to see the large number of enthusiastic parents who came to give their wholehearted support to the boys. Their presence certainly contributed to the determination of the team members and I was grateful for the huge amount of support that they offered. A heart-felt thank you to all involved. I look forward to the continued success in Trinity Cross Country as we farewell the Year Twelve members and see many of the Juniors now become part of the Senior Team. I know the Seniors who leave us will take with them the knowledge that through determination and commitment their goals can be achieved.
Mr Phil Jurjevich, Joel Cummuskey, Alessio Di Biaggio with the Cross Country Trophy.
