Wales Tour

At the end of Term Two this year, fifty-nine Trinity and Presbyterian Ladies College students left Perth for a very special Music Tour – destination Wales. The principal aim was to take part in the prestigious Llangollen Music Eisteddfod, along with participants from forty other countries. Prior to travelling to Wales the Chorale performed at Australia House for invited friends and relatives and then in the foyer of the Royal Festival Hall as part of the English National Youth Festival. While performing for the Welsh Eisteddfod the touring group stayed at the Oswestry School for Boys in Shropshire (founded in 1407). This gave some opportunity for rest and recreation in between performances. The chorale performed twice for 4500 Welsh schoolchildren before their competition performance. They also engaged in a surprise performance standing on the rocks in the River Dee for Welsh television and enjoyed participating in a colourful competitor’s parade through the narrow streets of Llangollen. After leaving Wales, the choir spent one night in the city of Bath, performing at the nearby historic Wells Cathedral whilst the Vocal Ensemble gave an impromptu performance at Bath Abbey. In Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, the chorale performed one of its best concerts. In the Christ Church College dining hall, made famous as the dining hall of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies, the chorale gave a surprise rendition of My God is so High. After two nights in Oxford, the Chorale returned to London to see the West End production of The Lion King. The next day was the Chorale’s final performance – in the immense St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

The tour contained everything a choir could wish for: competition to sharpen the standards, a balance of the sacred and secular in both musical repertoire and venues, and audiences in one of the world’s renowned singing nations – Wales. It was a tremendous success, both musically and culturally and the experience will stay with Chorale members for the rest of their lives.
