Student Roll Call

The music department in 2003 set out on its normal rounds of festivals, concerts and competitions and functions: music camp at New Norcia with Mercedes, primary, middle and senior school concerts, a myriad of assembly performances, the WA Schools’ Jazz Festival and the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival, the Edmund Rice Mass, Graduation Mass and of course Speech Night to mention the main calendared events. This year was also splashed with numerous extras. The Classical Guitar ensemble, making strong headway, performed with distinction at the International Guitar Festival; the Vocal Ensemble performed for the National Conference of Principals, the Gospel Song competition and received numerous other invites for conferences, services and out of school functions; all the senior bands performed at Rally Australia, and the Pipes and Drums members entered and achieved high results in the State Championships. All these performances have demonstrated the breadth and quality of performances in 2003. The big achievements of 2003 fall into three areas. The first of these areas is the ever-fruitful relationship between the Trinity and Presbyterian Ladies’ College Chorales. Their tour to England and Wales, including performances in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod and in Wells Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral Oxford and Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London was one of the major undertakings and achievements in the history of the Music Department. Secondly, the achievements at the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival rank amongst Trinity’s best. Students achieved six awards in this year’s festival including awards for choral singing, sacred choral music, piano solo, rock band and dance. The choral singing and rock band awards were demonstration of the abilities of a large contingent of year 12 musicians. Of significant mention are the achievements of the vocal ensemble whose repertoire and performances captured the hearts and minds of

audiences and adjudicators wherever they performed both at home and abroad. As one adjudicator said after a particular performance "I had tears in my eyes and terror in my spine". The third area of significant achievement was in the field of dance. B.I.G was formed in 2002 and achieved success from its first performance. In 2003 G.I.G (Guys In Groove), the secondary dance group was formed and emulated the first year achievements Dr Robert Braham of their younger colleagues. Both groups under theDirector of Music talented direction of Ms Ruth Bott won their respective awards in the CSPAF. This was no easy feat for fledgling ensembles and has added a new and dynamic performing art to Trinity.
