Year Nine Year 9

Mr Bobby Emmanuel Head of Year 9
he Year 9 students have completed an excellent year where they have participated to the fullest extent and contributed to the academic, sporting and spiritual components of the College. Trinity College offers a diverse range of activities that give students an opportunity to excel in areas beyond the classroom.
In terms of the College’s sporting life, this has been a very successful year indeed. Over the year, students have competed with great enthusiasm and proven themselves to be excellent sportsmen in both victory and the odd defeat. The boys have established a culture of participation to the highest extent and this is evident in the high regard that other schools have for Trinity College teams. The significant efforts of the Year 9 athletes contributed to a victory at the Swimming and a close finish in the Athletics Inters. The strong depth and competitive spirit in the rowing squads contributed to winning the Hamer Cup. For the first time the Middle School volleyball team will be touring to Melbourne for the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in December 2007 to compete at national level. Academically a culture of excellence has been maintained over the year. There are a number of opportunities for students to excel in activities outside the classroom. This year in the Australian Mathematics Competition Year 9 students won numerous awards and one prize, which are only given to the top ranked students. All Year 9 students participated in a Society & Environment excursion to the Supreme Court to investigate the inner workings of our legal system. Other activities worthy of mention are: our young scientists entering the WA Science & Engineering Challenge as well as the Rio Tinto Big Science Competition; the arguments flying as our brightest English students took on other colleges in the oratory art of debating; and Italian students investigating the varieties of cuisine on offer during their excursion to a fine Italian restaurant. Spiritually, the Year 9s earnest participation in the whole school and year level masses was admirable. The Galilee Retreat celebrated the path that Jesus walked in a metaphorical sense by crossing the Swan River by boat and then walking back to the College. The boys are also to be commended for their willingness to participate in Un-Fair Day. The amount of effort put in by the Year 9
cohort to organise stalls, activities and help raise money for the poor in India was outstanding. The highlight of our social calendar was the Trinity Mercedes ballroom dancing lessons. After much talk, teasing and trepidation, by the final lesson even the shyest, most reserved boy was seen to be crossing the floor with extreme confidence. It was remarked more than once by many staff that the Trinity boys are the ‘finest gentlemen’. A less formal occasion, but no less entertaining event, was the Penrhos River Cruise which saw approximately 50 boys socialise with the girls from Penrhos College on the Swan River. Once again the boys were extremely well behaved and had a thoroughly engaging evening. In Term One all Pastoral Care Groups went through an election process and student representatives were chosen. The role of these students is to represent the opinions of their peers and assist in broader College activities. For the first time the student councillors were put in charge of running the Middle School assemblies and performed their roles in a very positive manner. These councillors have the potential to be excellent leaders and I encourage them to seek out leadership roles in the Senior School next year. I thank the councillors for the positive leadership and support they have provided to their Pastoral Care Teachers and to me over the year. In closing I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the Year 9 Pastoral Care Group teachers; Mrs Lea Wilson, Ms Kristen Campisi, Mr Mike Mueller, Mr Eric O’Sullivan, Mr Jerry Scott, Mr Andrew Stephens, Mrs Colleen Wheeler and Mr Jean-Marc Rousset. Their generosity, care for the boys and commitment to the College is unquestionable. I appreciate all they have contributed to the development of the Year 9 boys over the school year.
