The 2007 rowing season was an extremely successful one both in performance on the water and in the combined efforts of the Trinity community. Success in the 1st VIII Challenge Cup, the Hamer Cup and, with Christian Eyres as Captain of Boats equalling Stefan Szczurowski’s Ergo record (6.17m for 2000m), meant that we took all awards. The 1st VIII also took every trophy available; the Indoor Ergo Regatta and the Guildford on Swan Regatta. The crew of Mike O’Neill (Cox), Brad Shaw (Stroke), Josh Hicks (7), Brendan Murray (6), Christian Eyres (5), Sam Collins (4), Blair Bayens (3), Luke Bonnet (2) and Luke McKenzie (Bow) under the guidance of 1st VIII Coach Mr Gavin Russell held off a brave Wesley challenge after leading all the way in the Head of the River race and the season. Other winners on the day were the 2nd Quad Scull coached by Mr Paul Abrahams and Ms Claire Woolfitt and a crew of Alex Ambrogio (Cox), Liam Dee (Stroke), Jerico Matarazzo (3), James Ambrogio (2) and Tom Humphries (Bow). The 9D Quad of Bohdan Young (Cox), Josh Smith (Stroke), Dave Scott (3), Tim Rayner (2), Jordan Begley (Bow) and with Mr Tom Nelligan as coach also won their race. A highlight of the season was the Trinity Regatta where we won twelve of a possible sixteen races, winning the Kosovich Cup for 1st VIIIs and the George Xouris Cup for Open Sculls. In the sculling event Christian Eyres held off a tenacious and unexpected challenge from Josh Hicks to win by a metre, with two lengths back to representatives from Scotch, Hale and Wesley. Our first trip in some twenty years to Walpole was also a great experience; the help of many people in Walpole
to make this work was unexpected and extremely generous. The boys ran over 50km of the Bibbulmun Track, surfed at Conspicuous Cliffs and rowed up the Nornalup River experiencing one of the real jewels of Western Australia. Mr Gary Muir, winner of the “Best Tourism Experience in the Southern Hemisphere Award”, attached himself to the group after conducting a four hour tour of the inlet and surrounding forests and discovering our intentions of exploring the Bibbulmun. As the record holder for running the whole track, some Mr Phillip Jurjevich Director of Rowing 960km in seventeen days, he was eager to show his favourite sections, all the time telling stories of great fires, Nannup tigers, shipwrecks and pet stingrays. The generosity of the parents in the running of the tour, the camps, preparing the meals, painting the sculls, fundraising and towing vehicles was enormous and is definitely a factor in our success; young boys see the generosity of their parents and feel a duty to push on when things get tough. I need to say a special thanks to Mr Paul Foley as President and Mrs Marilyn Harries as Kitchen Coordinator for their untiring work and Mrs Kathryn Taggart and Mr Paul Abrahams for their production of an excellent Year Book. Our coaches must also be thanked for their generosity in sharing their skills and modelling a strong work ethic. This season would still have been a great season without the wins. Under the leadership of Christian Eyres, Luke Bonnet, Luke McKenzie and Mike O’Neill the boys displayed a fierceness that made Mark, myself and everyone wearing blue and green extremely proud. From crocodile runs, daylight savings and early morning Januseks the work was there. This was not a group of exceptional size but one of exceptional spirit – well done!
