Music Music
Every year has its musical highlights, some are planned and others evolve from the creativity of staff and students. In Term 2, with Ms Ruth Bott on leave, the department welcomed Ms Athena Litis as a classroom teacher and accompanist. Ms Litis carried on with the creative work in the Year 8 and 9 classes which included opera skits in Year 9. In Term 3 the same class took group creative expression to a new level with a work titled One two three five four. This work, which involved percussion, body percussion, chairs as instruments as well as movement and vocal production, was forged into an item for the Contemporary Arts Night. The Contemporary Arts Night was a new initiative for 2007. Held in Term 3 it showcased creativity in music, dance, theatre and the visual arts. Musically, ensembles included two senior rock bands, one with very original material, the senior percussion ensemble Concussion in an impressive performance of Little Sea Gongs, and the very stylish Year 11 jazz ensemble, the StraightAhead Quartet. The Straight-Ahead Quartet was formed for an Artsedge competition which culminated in a performance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. This student based group assisted by Mr Kevin Fenner was subsequently offered several gigs, including the University of Western Australia Guild Ball. The Year 11 music class had the opportunity to stretch its compositional practices by entering the Sibelius Music Composition Competition. This Australia wide competition was a great opportunity for the students to write an extensive piece in a chosen style. All students were able to produce pieces with character and intelligent use of compositional techniques. One of the highlights of the musical year was a visit by the Melbourne Boys High School Music Department. This was a wonderful experience of musical sharing. It included performances of student compositions by both schools as well as a shared vocal concert. Speech Nights are often remembered for the musical items and in particular the massed choir of Year 10 to Year 12 students performing together. Finding a soloist to front the massed choir has never been a major obstacle with numerous senior boys, both musically trained and untrained, auditioning for the part. This year, and not for the first time, the massed choir featured two solo vocalists. James Green and Bradley Shaw led the school through Tonight Tonight, a Smashing Pumpkins song, which also featured electric violins played by Ben Caddy, Lee Hutchings and Dannel Yeo. Ben also provided another Speech Night
highlight with a very musical performance of Légende for solo violin by Henri Wieniawski. The College’s Swing Band One took us through some technically and stylistically demanding charts, including Sax to the Max and the combined Trinity/Presbyterian Ladies’ College Chorale showcased two sides to its repertoire with Festival Sanctus by John Leavitt and an arrangement of Autumn Leaves with vocal solo by Stefan Pugliese and saxophone solo by Christian Ruggiero. This was a sign of things to come as the Chorale prepares for its China Dr Robert Braham Director of Music tour in 2008. i-fly, a creative dance representing many aspects of flight and plane travel using the combined forces of BIG and GIG, rounded off the entertainment prior to speeches and prize distribution. The Pipes and Drums provided their usual entertainment value with the drummer’s fanfare impressing many.
Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival
Congratulations to all music and drama students who participated in the CSPAF. With in excess of 80 solo entries on top of all the ensemble entrants, Trinity music students presented a large variety of musical styles and instrumental combinations. The students and groups which received merit awards, honourable mentions and section awards are listed in this Annual. The net result of large scale and high quality participation was a fourth consecutive Zenith Award for performing with excellence and entering into the spirit of the Festival.
Special mention must go to the group and solo award winners. Louis Frere Harvey turned the clock back by replicating Joshua Webster’s 2004 winning percussion solo performing Ghanaia for marimba to take out the solo instrumental award. Daniel Mullaney achieved a first for the Music Department by being awarded the secondary solo vocal prize with a beautifully crafted performance of O Del Mio Amato Ben. The classical guitarists have long been strong contenders in several sections of the Festival and were not to be outdone this year. David Chua and Mark Ng combined in a classical guitar duet that held the Concert Hall spellbound in the final concert after receiving their award in the instrumental duet section performing Aurora. The Vocal Ensemble added to its list of credits with the liturgical music award singing The Deer’s Cry and I Will Greatly Rejoice.
All participating students deserve praise for their courage and musicianship in performance. Every student’s performance, whether solo or in ensemble, is important. I personally thank the music tutors and ensemble directors for their enthusiastic involvement and preparation of the students.
