Mr John Montagu

Coach 1st XVIII The Flagship of the Trinity football program secured the College’s tenth Alcock Cup. We have won five in a row now and the last four we have secured outright. The 2007 team were a talented and well blended group of athletes. They had a nine win and one loss record for the season.

The team averaged over 113 pts a game and only conceded on average forty three points per game. With a percentage of 260% and ten points clear from Hale and Wesley in equal second place, the boys clearly dominated the competition. Dan Foley, John Lucas and I had the best midfield in the competition, the best Ruckman (Christian Eyers ) and some very good big go to’s up forward in Xavier Foley, James Griffiths and James Grierson which made coaching this side a dream. When you get a lot of the ball and you have quality big men to control stoppages you are going to be hard to beat.

The “X factor” in successful sporting teams is the courage and preparedness of team mates to work with each other. The 2007 side had both these traits in spadefuls. Once again the tradition of being absolutely

committed at contested ball was a hallmark of this team and is becoming a benchmark for anyone who earns the right to put on a Trinity 1st XVIII jumper. These traits were reflected in our leadership. Luke Bonnett (Capt) and Lewis Fasolo (Vice Captain) were both fantastically skilled yet fearless in the packs and when the ball was in dispute. They set the tone for the rest to follow and they were not left to fight alone. Shane Bendotti, Myles Pover, Zac Zucconi, Ethan Hall, James Green and Luke Conca would all put their body on the line when it counted (It made an ageing Coach get “that warm feeling inside”)

There are then your playmakers who come into the equation of a premiership side. Lewis Fasolo played like a young Robert Harvey, skilled, fantastic hands and feet and with amazing core strength. Surround him with the likes of our three State 16’s players, Mitch Duncan, Travis Colyer and Kane Lucas and you start to get an idea of how hard it is to get into a Trinity 1st XVIII midfield. These talented young men rotated with the likes of the freakishly evasive Michael Mather, the speedy Michael Bostlemen, the tough running Freddy Clutterbuck and the silky skills of Greeny (James Green) who I have already mentioned. Ben Hennessy was the man for all seasons. He was our main utility player. Solid and dependable. Defensively we played some good footy. Jacob Brennan and Isaac Dart were the two cornerstones. Jacob loved the big challenges and was able to back up his words with action. Zucca (Zachary Zucconi) and Damon Joyce gave us plenty of run off the half-back. Luke Champion, Eric Bin Sali and Damian Leipold gave us good covering support mostly in the back-half.

Other lads who made solid contributions were as follows: Alex Fasolo (Year 10) is an outstanding prospect and scored nine goals in six games. David Michael showed great courage to come back from a broken leg to kick eight goals in five games. Sam Collins played two games and is an emerging Ruckmen, Tim Shales played one game and is an emerging power forward.

I am also very proud of Old Boy Jarrhan Jacky (class of 2006) who has just been drafted to Richmond for the 2008 season. Congratulations Jarrhan we all wish you the very best of luck for the coming season. This makes me wonder, who will be next?

On behalf of the coaching staff I would like to thank Kelly McGinnity for her excellent physio work with the boys over the past few seasons and wish her well in her career. We are also very blessed to have Father Michael McMahon who has helped us with his inspirational prayer before each game also Chris and Barbara Colyer for their fantastic managerial support. Thank you to all the parents for their invaluable assistance, the Old Boys for their financial support and the “Friends of Trinity Football” (too many to list) who have done a marvellous job assisting the lads this year. Finally I would like to thank the lads; you are just simply the best.
