Senior Enterprise Program
Academic
The senior enterprise program, involving students in years 10, 11 and 12, began the year with a number of new enrolments. This necessitated that the program changed sufficiently to accommodate the various interests of the new students.
Students from each year level were able to access mainstream subjects depending on their requirements for future TAFE studies or for a direct transition into the workforce. The flexibility that the program provides allows the students to achieve the outcomes that are required in this transition program from school to work.
Special mention should be made of the staff that assist in the Senior Enterprise Program; Ms Ruth Bott for her creative work in Yoga and associated skills, Mr Phillip Jurjevich with his invaluable work with growth and development, Mr William Quartermaine and his delivery of practical and creative IT work and to Mr Michael Italiano for the work he put into the Design and Technology unit.
The various enterprises that students have been involved with this year include an extension of the Olive Grove at Dwellingup, we now have 175 trees comprising three different varieties that are protected from wildlife and are under reticulation. We are hoping for our first pressing in 2009 or 2010.
The Laundry Enterprise, which currently provides approximately $4,000 in annual income, continues to be an important part of the program as it is a valuable vehicle for the development of organisational and business skills.
The launching of Trinity Graphics Studio has allowed the students to apply advanced IT skills for the first time in the program. We currently do design work for TOBA and the Trinity College Auxiliary. Work for these groups included the flyers, invitations and signage for the Trinity College Art Exhibition, Flyer for the TOBA Sundowner, College Auxiliary Melbourne Cup flyers, Cup day ‘name the foal’ competition and function tickets. We intend to expand this venture next year with more in-house work as well as seeking external contracts which will go some way towards making Senior Enterprise a selffunded program.
I will take this opportunity to thank Mrs Anna Gingell (TOBA Executive Officer), Ms Celenza (Principals Assistant) and Mrs Martina Stroud (President of the Trinity Auxiliary) for their support and interest in the program; the boys’ really appreciated the time they devoted to the meetings which provided a very real simulation of relationship and dealings that occur between a business and client.
In 2008 we will continue to diversify the program to meet the needs of the incoming students. There will be greater emphasis on horticulture and irrigation for those students wishing to pursue an interest in these fields. This new emphasis will again be designed around an enterprise model which allows for TAFE based competencies to be achieved through the running of a business as opposed to the more traditional VET oriented programs.
At the end of 2007, we farewelled four students who had been with the program for the past three years. We wish these students well for the future and I am sure that the confidence and self esteem these boys developed due to the hard work of all staff will stand them in good stead for the future.
