Ihave had the pleasure of looking after the pastoral wellbeing of this cohort of young men since Year 9. It is one of the great positives of being involved in boys’ education; you can see the growth from boy to young man take place in such a dynamic and short space

Mr John Montagu Head of Year 11 of time. To me this is at the core of what we do at Trinity. It certainly is the attraction of working in an all boy school. This group of young men have been the most talented I have encountered in many years; they seem to cover all bases. Academically they are very bright and I am sure a good number will push for the 400 Club in the TEE next year. Their performances in national maths and various science projects and debating and public speaking competitions reflects their outstanding potential. The musical talent and the performing arts are well supported by this group; many lads are involved in the various bands, choirs or ensembles. The lads certainly learn about time management when they enrol at Trinity; with this group being involved in all aspects of College life everyone wants a piece of their time. The athletic ability of the group is demonstrated by their major contribution to the cricket, rowing, swimming, football, soccer, cross country and basketball titles won in 2007. What a year. With the family taxi service to rowing at 5.30am and then honouring the various winter fixtures at a variety of venues, it is not just the boys who are time poor.

This group of young men are also personable and social. Most are upfront and talk straight to you which is refreshing to experience from lads of this age. We have had many involved in community service activities. Some have given up their summer holidays to help building projects in the Philippines. Father McMahon has been well received by the boys at our various Masses and his interaction with the boys who are struggling in the year group has been priceless.

With so many highly talented students to choose from the selection of the 2008 Prefects was a perplexing process for Mr Banks and the Executive. There are a number of very strong, confident and capable leaders who are very much their own person. They have already stamped their leadership qualities by being genuine “men for others”. 2008 has the potential to be a great year for the College with these young men leading from the front.

It has been a pleasure being a part of their journey so far. I look forward to seeing what they can achieve next year.

Visit to the International Space School

On 13 July we set off on our journey to Houston, Texas, where we were to represent Trinity College and Australia at the International Space School 2007. The International Space School is run by the International Space School Foundation which was founded in 1997 and has hosted an annual Summer School ever since. The ISSF is staffed by volunteers from around the world and works closely with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other organisations to provide a unique insight into the aerospace industry in Houston.

This year, thirty-five students from countries including France, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Bolivia, New Zealand, India, Russia, Chilé and South Africa attended, providing a forum for many like-minded individuals and a marvellous opportunity to learn more about a variety of cultures.

The ISS program was hosted at the University of Houston Clearlake. On arrival we were asked to choose a team which we wished to participate in and interviewed to confirm our choices. The three teams this year were the Red team, which was responsible for getting to Mars and back, the Blue team, which was responsible for working on Mars, and the Green team which was responsible for the biological aspect of keeping the crew alive and healthy. Over the course of our two week stay we spent time working in our teams at the University planning a manned mission to Mars. During this time we received many excellent lectures on a variety of topics, from space law to space suit design and were assisted by NASA engineers who mentored us while we worked.

In addition to our project work we were taken on a variety of excursions including a trip to the George Observatory, the University of Texas Medical Branch, the Museum of Natural Science where we successfully completed a Mars mission simulation at their Challenger Centre and to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Centre where we visited the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility and saw the awe-inspiring Saturn V rocket that is housed there.

We are both very appreciative of what was certainly a fantastic and life changing experience and would like to thank Trinity College, and in particular Mr Blake and Mr Cooper and our ISSF contact Deborah Flaniken, for providing us with the marvellous opportunity and organising our attendance. In addition, we would like to thank our host families, the mentors and lecturers, Geoff and Annette Mules the founders of the ISSF, and the program managers Chris and Clare Greenfield, and Tahir Merali, who made sure the day-to-day activities were a brilliant success.
