Mr Anthony Byrne

Head of English and LOTE The attentions of the English Department, and seemingly a significant cross section of the media, have been on the New Courses of Study in 2007 with English and Engineering being the first subject areas this year at Year 12 level to implement the course and experience Tertiary Entrance Examinations in this new format.

The Department has been conscious of preparing our senior students for every eventuality and endeavouring to ensure the anxiety surrounding these courses was not unduly imparted to our students in what is already a stressful time. However the continued development of our Middle School curriculum remains a focus. Our Year 8 students have read a range of print texts over the course of the year and have recently undertaken units in poetry and the fantasy genre. The Year 9 students have studied the feature film Gattaca at length in promoting visual literacy, which continues to grow in terms of emphasis in our New Courses of Study. Our Year 10 students have recently delved into the life of Ned Kelly and examined how his character has been represented in a variety of mediums in order to address whether Ned Kelly was a hero or a villain. Literature students had the opportunity to see the Bell Shakespeare’s production of Macbeth and prior to this a performance of Othello, such experiences reinforcing the power and immediacy of live theatre.

Finally congratulations to a number of students who competed in a range of public speaking competitions over the course of the year. The capacity of these students to go beyond their schooling, sporting and extra-curricular commitments to compete demonstrates their genuine desire to maximise the opportunities that the Trinity College dynamic provides.
