Year Ten Year 10
2
007 has been a very successful time for our year group. Students have shown great maturity as they continued their journey of growing into young adults. Many realised early in the year that they needed to find a balance in their lives. It is this balance between Mr Barry McKenna schoolwork, home life, Head of Year 10 rest and play that can be challenging for most adolescents. There also comes the pressure of making the important decision of which subjects to choose for Year 11 which is an important decision for any 15 year old to make. I am happy to say that most were able to meet these demands and enjoyed doing so. In Year 10 Faith Education continued to be a very positive experience. The core of this is the Religious Education program and the Year Group masses with the highlight being the Emmaus Retreat Program. These were all conducted by Campus Ministry and the Faith Education Department. During our masses Faith Education was made much easier to understand with sermons given by Father McMahon who can relate to the students on a level they can understand and appreciate. Our boys realise that our faith is the main pillar upon which our College is built. Academic excellence continued to be the focus of all our teachers and the group was always challenged to achieve their best. Many students did this in the fields of Society and Environment, Science, English and Maths and some went on to achieve high results in external competitions such as the State Mathematics Talent Quest and the Australian Mathematics Competition. Boys who took up the option of Visual Art, Design and Technology, Information and Communication Technology or Italian also achieved very high results. In
the area of music there were a large number of boys involved in ensembles, band or choir. Many of these boys were proud to be a part of the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival at which the College won the Zenith Award for the fourth consecutive year – a fitting reward for their efforts. As well as music there was also the Performing Arts program which gave students the opportunity to display their talents in a performance at the College Speech Night. It also shows what great opportunities the College provides. Sport has again been a major part of the lives of our Year 10s with the group contributing to the enormous success that the College has achieved. There are simply far too many performances to single out any individual but what impressed me was the amount of team spirit that developed within the year group as a result of this success. However I will especially mention the members of the PSA swimming team who won the PSA Interschool Carnival for the first time. On the social scene Trinity and Mercedes held several functions together with a sports afternoon at Maylands Bowling Club and a Hollywood Theme night in Gibney Hall. These two events were a follow up from the Year 9 dancing lessons and both occasions were times of great fun and enjoyment. In conclusion I would like to thank the Year 10 Pastoral Care Group teachers for their pastoral care of the students. I would also like to thank each of the student representatives for assisting their classes in helping out with the social events and fundraising events. 2008 promises to be a great year for this group and I look forward to again being their Head of Year. I know our students will continue to achieve great success and in the Edmund Rice spirit be “men for others”. Mr Barry McKenna Head of Year 10
