Physical Education Sport

P

hysical education at Trinity College provides a diverse range of learning experiences for our students. The sporting success that Trinity currently enjoys is due to a number of elements. Those being programs which complement and enrich the sports electives. We have Mr Rod Rainer a very professional, hard Head of Physical Education working and dedicated staff who ensure each boy has the opportunity to achieve his potential. The staff provide excellent role models by the way in which they conduct and present themselves in an effort to promote healthy and active living.

Physical Education in Years 8 to 10 The summer sports program in Year 8 and 9 (introduced in 2001) continues to enhance the development of our students by providing them with additional coaching in the sport of their choice. Trinity students continually display a high level of skill development across the range of summer sports played in the PSA. This is due to the fact that, where possible, students are linked with a teacher who has expertise in their chosen sport who can provide an additional learning experience.

Fitness and Health Education This is an extremely popular unit which provides students with basic ball handling skills in Year 8. This theme continues on in Year 9 and 10 where students are introduced to the concepts of fitness components, training principles and the various training methods to develop these aspects. These units provide a solid base of knowledge and experiences for the various physical education courses offered in Years 11 and 12.

Physical Education in Year 11 and 12 The introduction of a TEE based course of study in physical education has been an outstanding success. The popularity of this course is on the rise as students realise they can combine their love of sport with academic achievement. The current Year 11 group will be the first students with the opportunity to use Physical Education Studies as a TEE subject to qualify for University entrance. It is a challenging course with students exploring their potential in sports coaching, exercise physiology and biomechanical principles.

AFL Level 1 Field Umpiring Accreditation Students undertaking the Stage 1A and 1B course of study were given the opportunity to complete a Level 1 AFL Umpiring Accreditation. This was done in conjunction with the PSA Junior School Winter Carnival. Trinity students acted as central, goal and boundary umpires for the football matches. 24 senior school students participated with 14 students completing their accreditation. The boys are to be congratulated for the way in which they conducted themselves on the day.

Assistant Teacher Program

Aquatics

Trinity College realises the importance of providing young graduating teachers with a high quality teaching experience. We have had a number of excellent young teachers from Notre Dame University, Edith Cowan and the University of Western Australia who have made a significant contribution to the teachings of the College.

The construction of the Tony Curtis aquatic centre has no doubt contributed to the recent success of the swimming team. Its effective utilisation within the aquatics units offered has also contributed to this success. The Yr 10 Aquatic students assist with teaching the Year 4 students in developing their swimming abilities. The Year 8 and 9 groups develop their competitive strokes and lifesaving skills so that they will be rewarded with certification at Bronze Medallion level in Year 10.

The benefit of being involved in this program is evident in the fact that three of our current physical education staff did their final practicum at the College. Mr David Hankin, Mr Brett Silver and Mr Brendan Chapman all had outstanding pre-service experiences and as a result were easily identified when job vacancies became available. I would like to acknowledge the involvement of the pre-service teachers for their contribution in providing quality learning experiences

Health Education

In Year 10 the emphasis moves to such important and relevant issues as drug education and promoting positive attitudes to safer driving. The Keys for Life program proved to be an outstanding success with over 300 students and parents attending the evening workshop.

This program aims to develop positive attitudes to a healthy and active lifestyle. The focus in Year 8 is on the promotion of healthy diet and nutrition practices as well as appreciating the importance of remaining active.
