WA Junior Maths Olympiad Individually Calum Braham shared equal first prize with a student from Scotch College and another from Perth Modern School. All three students had perfect scores. Calum received the “Department of Mathematics and Statistics (Curtin University) Award for Excellence”. Jack Dewsbury also received a merit award. In the team’s event our Year 8 team shared equal first prize with a Year 9 team from Rossmoyne SHS and another Year 9 team
from Hale School. The Trinity College team consisted of Calum Braham, Jonathan Chung-Wah-Cheong, Jack Dewsbury and Siddanth Sharma. They received the “School of Engineering & Mathematics (Edith Cowan University) Award for Excellence”. I am so impressed with the high level of participation, the very high standards our students demonstrate and the endeavour shown to reach those standards. Year 11 student Dannel Yeo was chosen to attend the 40th National Mathematics Summer School held in Canberra from 6–19 January 2008. This is the oldest and most prestigious Summer School of its type in Australia. Participation is restricted to about 75 students. The program is for the discovery and development of mathematically gifted and talented Secondary School students from all over Australia. To gain selection Dannel put together a very comprehensive and professional application. This year our Year 8 students were treated to the Maths Roadshow for the first time. It proved to be quite entertaining and something future Year 8 students can anticipate seeing. All students throughout the College have access through the internet to the computer based Mathletics program. Teachers are incorporating Mathletics as part of the teaching/learning program. It can be used for homework, revision, extension and assessment preparation. The online Mental Maths competition often sees many intense struggles between students. We have a three year deal for the use of this program to continue. This year also saw Mr Rom Cirillo depart to the Curriculum Council after having ten productive years as Head of Mathematics. Rom had a very positive impact on the standard of mathematics at Trinity and still takes a keen interest in our students’ results. I would also like to thank Mr Damien Casey for the contribution he made to maths education in his time at the College, until the call of a return to the army became irresistible, and I welcome Mr Ross Jacobs to our staff. Finally I would like to thank all members of the Mathematics Department for what has been a memorable year for all the best reasons. The Department in general is such a positive and supportive work environment and this is ultimately reflected in the attitude and effort that nearly all our students demonstrate towards mathematics.
