01 THE ANALYSIS

DEMOGRAPHICS Analysis shows that poplar is a very diverse area, history shows that this diversity is ever changing and evolving. The Poplar ward profile (2014) shows that around 30% of the population was White, whether that be British or Other (Tower Hamlets, 2019a). Around 40% of the population were Bangladeshi and 10 % were Black (Tower Hamlets, 2019a). The remaining 20% were of mixed and other ethnicities (Tower Hamlets, 2019a). Further analysis showed that trends in positive migration are driven by international migration into the Tower Hamlets area (Tower Hamlets, 2019b). Between 2016 and 2017

there was a net international migration into the borough of around 5,500 people, whereas around 2,000 people emigrated out of the borough during the same period (Tower Hamlets, 2019b). This suggests an increasingly diverse population as net international migration into the borough continues year on year (Tower Hamlets, 2019b). The framework aims to promote the ethnic diversity of Poplar by showcasing identity and encouraging community ownership through the engagement with planning via tactical urbanism interventions.
