Green and Blue Space

01 THE ANALYSIS

GREEN AND BLUE SPACE

As with much of central and inner London, truly public green space is a scarce resource within Poplar. There are key large green spaces within the centre of Poplar, including Poplar Recreation Ground and All Saints Church Yard. These are key spaces for households which don’t have private gardens or courtyards resulting in these spaces being relatively well used. Many smaller green spaces, while providing visual amenity, lack functional or physical amenity situated next to main roads or within absent spaces left over after planning developments. These spaces therefore are underutilised

and give no real purpose for communities within Poplar. Overall, green space is generally disjointed and lacking for most residents in Poplar. Opportunity arises within this framework to provide significant upgrades in the amount of green space within Poplar.

In regard to blue space, there is a large amount situated to the south of Poplar with East India Docks, the River Thames and linear blue spaces of Limehouse Cut and River Lea to the north. New development and links have the ability to reconnect Poplar to these blue spaces.
