TRAFFIC CALMING
In an attempt to improve pedestrian and cycle connectivity, East India Dock Road will be traffic calmed with more space allocated to pedestrians and cyclists.
The traffic calming strategy will promote socio-environmental sustainability by decreasing space allocated for vehicle use and increasing space for pedestrians and cyclists. Sustainable transport modes must be prioritised on principle routes through Poplar in order to meet urgent issues related to socio-environmental sustainability. East-West connectivity will be improved for pedestrians and cyclists as well as improved crossing points across the roadway, allowing for greater ease and use for non-vehicular modes of transport.

TRAFFIC CALMING
The New London Plan identifies Poplar as an Opportunity Area and emphasises the need for significant improvements to be made to local transport, pedestrian, and cycling accessibility.
Traffic calming measures can enhance pedestrian and cycling environments by minimising crossing times, adjusting the hierarchy of transportation in the built environment, slowing traffic speeds, promoting active transport modes, and enahance the general safety of both active transport users and vehicle users.
Traffic calming through predestrian realm improvements intends to promote a modal shift to more sustainable modes. In the borough of Tower Hamlets, 35% of people own one or more vehicles, the 4th lowest rate of car ownership in London. Therefore, promoting this modal shift and reducing the amount of through traffic via East India Dock Road in order to promote active transport and public transport uses would be appropriate in both social and environmental terms.
Proposed measures would include widening the pavements on East India Dock Road, Removing or enhancing pedestrian traffic islands, protecting cyclist through enhanced cycle lanes and create a distinguishable diffrence between pedestrian and vehicle based environments. Road narrowed and widened bike lanes with pavement improvements in Kingston Upon Thames (Author, 2019).
