04 MASTERPLAN CONNECTIONS
Due to physical barriers such as the surrounding road network, including Aspen Way, Poplar is disconnected from its neighbours. Particular weakness has been identified in north south connections to Bromley by Bow in the north and Canary Wharf to the south.
Notably, this masterplan keeps Aspen Way between Poplar and Canary Wharf. Upon initial judgement, this may seem to preserve Poplar’s isolation from Canary Wharf, but this strategy views Canary Wharf’s future growth as a threat to Poplar’s East End identity. The masterplan aims to protect Poplar’s East End identity while addressing poor connectivity with Canary Wharf through new and improved links between the two areas.
Aspen Way won’t be left untouched and will undergo significant transformations to lessen its negative socioenvironmental effects including air pollution, high noise levels and poor visual amenity.
As initially displayed in the concept map, Poplar’s interface with surrounding areas will be improved with surrounding areas within this masterplan, aligning with the improving connectivity strategy. Existing roadways and footpaths will be enhanced to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists to create a more permeable interface with surrounding areas. New links will be created encouraging movement over large barriers such as Aspen Way and connecting Poplar with its East End neighbours such as Bromley by Bow.
