econdary school remains a significant milestone in the life of any student. It can be a rather daunting experience to venture beyond the relative sanctuary of primary school into an environment that poses innumerable challenges in the form of rules, procedures, Mr Robert Armitage and expectations. The class Head of Year 8 of 2004 adjusted to these demands with great initiative and endeavour. The boys realised quickly that to survive and ultimately flourish, they had to take personal responsibility for their day-to-day organisation and participate enthusiastically in the academic, spiritual, sporting and cultural pursuits. In short, the more they are prepared to engage with the vast opportunities that the full life of the College provides, the more they could grow towards their potential. Early in the first term the annual three day Orientation Camp was held at Camp Kelly, Dwellingup. The boys were involved in activities such as hiking, rafting, boat building, and learnt to cope in the great outdoors without the help of their parents. Socially, it is important that everyone develop new and existing friendships in an environment of tolerance and acceptance. Many of the mateships developed at Trinity will not only be an important source of strength at the College but will extend well into adult life.

Each homeroom group elected two student councillors. These councillors were good role models and performed well in providing positive leadership. I thank them and encourage them to continue to seek out leadership opportunities in the years to come. The boys’ earnest participation in the whole school and year level masses was another admirable dimension of their spiritual growth throughout the year. The Year 8s were also very proactive in supporting the missions and showed great commitment under very difficult weather conditions to support the Fun Run for India. Year level assemblies provided students with a forum to give feedback to their peers about their diverse activities. The centrepiece of our social calendar was the Trinity Mercedes Quiz Night that also incorporated a dance. I congratulate the boys on their mature and good spirited participation at this and the other socials with Iona and Santa Maria, I would like to offer my deep gratitude to the pastoral care group for 2004. Ms Neasham, Mr Shackleton, Mrs Kauhanen, Mr Slack-Smith, Mr Wilkinson, Ms Mizen, Mr Scott and later, Ms Pagoda all offered guidance and support to the students in a manner that was characterised by great generosity, compassion and commitment.
