In the contest for the Lawe Davies Cup this season, Wesley College and Hale School, dominated the competition and unfortunately the First XI had to play them on two occasions. Although our team showed the Trinity spirit, and for large periods of the games played the better football, we were unable to put the ball in the net and this proved to be our downfall. In the other six games the team was able to turn their dominance into results, winning five and only losing to Aquinas in the last minute. A special mention must be made of James Quinn, up front, Ben Wisbey and Peter Menchetti in midfield, and Adam Russo, Daniel Pastorelli and Andrea Terni in defence.

The other senior teams had greater success; the second XI lost only one game in the first round of the competition against Wesley and won their division over all. Some of the outstanding players were the goal keeper and vicecaptain, Justin Pietracatella and the centre back and captain, Daniel Steffanoni. The third XI also won their division with nine wins and one narrow loss – 6:5 to Guildford. During the season they scored a total of seventy two goals while conceding only fourteen with the top scorers being Marcin Kiszko and Minh Nguyen. The 10 As had an excellent season, finishing top of their division after losing only one game. Under the excellent guidance of Mr Adam Sibson the boys improved their skills, fitness and team play throughout the year. A number of boys had excellent seasons, but particular mention must go to Michael Dinh and Ronan Bray who were almost impossible to separate for fairest and best. Captain Ben Colquhoun provided excellent leadership, and Phil Santos’ efforts to improve his fitness reaped excellent rewards. The 10 Bs also finished on top of their division. They only lost their last game and finished the season with eight wins and one draw. The standout players were Alex Pagnozzi, Leonard Ong and Will Schwab.

In 9A soccer the boys lost only one game throughout the season and finished in top position winning nine of their ten matches. Overall this was a great team effort, but special mention must go to Alex Cocking, Calum O’Connell, Aaron Mayo and Captain Josh Marocchi who provided the skill and class necessary to overcome some strong opposing teams. The 9B group were cooperative and supportive. Congratulations to the whole team who won their championship and especially the captain Tim Cluett who always proved to be a great leader. The team did not lose a game and only drew a couple. The goalkeeper David Siliquini was outstanding and the defence led by Beau Mavric was impenetrable and the forwards and midfield were just unstoppable. The 9C team finished their season with five wins from the ten games. The Year 8 teams also had an excellent season with the 8A, nine wins and one loss, and 8C teams, seven wins and one draw, winning their competitions. The 8B team finished third with seven wins and three losses.

Soccer Club Singapore Tour 2004

On the 16th July, after months of fundraising and preparation, sixteen honoured boys left Perth airport to embark on an enjoyable tour of the social and cultural experience that Singapore had to offer and to take part in an extremely challenging soccer campaign. The group visited attractions like the Singapore Discovery Centre, the Night Safari, Sentosa Island and one full day in Malaysia. The remaining spare time was spent shopping which resulted in various boys calling home to ask for more cash. The most relaxing times were spent in our hotel rooms, which led to frequent ‘attacks’ on various squad members. Late night chats came back to haunt us in early morning training sessions. These were wearying and most vigorous as the boys were so desperate for starting positions and most of us were still acclimatizing to the humidity and heat. The soccer aspect was the main reason we were there, and after underachieving in the PSA season, the boys were hungry for success. We were scheduled to play the two heavyweights of Singapore soccer, Home United FC and Singapore Armed Forces, followed by a first for Trinity soccer, a game against the Singapore U/18 National team. Persistence and patience was required in our first game against Home United, to win 1-0, after Ben Wisbey scored a great goal with only five minutes remaining. The next day, an inspired Trinity outfit, played Singapore Armed Forces FC. Unfortunately we conceded two early goals that deflated the team. In the second half, we came back with great perseverance and a “never say die” attitude after great goals from Chris Chiari and James Quinn, levelling the game at 2-2. However, deep into injury time, we conceded a goal to go down fighting 3-2. Our final game saw a very fatigued TC take the field against the best competition possible, the National Team. The boys played with great heart and determination and were only 1-0 down at half time. Battling fatigue and doubts in the minds of some boys, we ended up losing 4-0. This was a disappointing end to the tour, sending us back home wondering ‘what if”. Andre Terni, Chris Chiari and Adam Russo executed vital roles in the team’s solid performance with their tremendous efforts in all three games. The behaviour of the side was impeccable, due to the responsibility of representing the College and being under Mr Blatchford’s direction. Without his tireless efforts the tour would not have been possible. Special thanks must go to him and Mr Archibald, who stepped in at the last minute to help keep the boys focused on the job. The parents also deserve special thanks for nearly six months of preparations and to the ‘connections’ they had in securing sponsors and committing people to help out in fundraising. Also we thank the parents who came with us on tour and kept us on guard. The players were thoroughly grateful for their support and for the efforts of the best possible waterboys Singapore had ever seen. The experience of the tour will be forever remembered and valued.
