Badminton

This year saw Trinity College join the PSA badminton competition for the first time, making badminton a full PSA sport competing for the Kelly Cup (named after our own Br Tony Kelly) The Trinity boys started the year as social players making sure their opponents enjoyed themselves and didn’t work up a sweat! That seemed to be the way to play. After their first game against Hale, a 9-0 loss, they quickly realized that there was a better way to play!! Hit the shuttlecock AWAY from their opponents and over their heads!

There was another 9-0 loss to Wesley in the second week, but the games lasted twice as long, and some boys were even scoring points. Anthony Chiu, and Josh D’Souza actually won a game in the firsts! There was excitement in the air.

The next week against Aquinas, was the best fixture of the year. Trinity 5 Aquinas 4 in the firsts. A win!! Damien Harvey won a brilliant singles match, as did Shaun Wyn-Jones. Damien and Mark Fay combined to win their doubles match, and set the standard for wins in the rest of the doubles matches. The entire team contributed lead by the example of Captain David Smith, who also won his doubles match with Shaun Wyn-Jones. It was a day to remember. The most improved Badminton player in the school for the year was Michael Maynard who improved his skills and cunning to actually defeat David Smith on an early Tuesday morning training session. He ended the year playing in the Firsts. The school championship was decided in a close match between two of our best three players, David Smith and Shaun Wyn-Jones. Shaun won a closely fought battle to become Trinity’s first Badminton Champion. However the entire team, firsts and seconds, all played like champions in the last nine fixtures, once they realized that this was not social badminton. They were a pleasure to watch and coach.
