Vocational Education
Each year sees Trinity advance one more step along this important road. Vocational Education is a term used to refer to all activities at the school which have future work as a particular focus. It covers specific vocational subjects drawn from national training packages and also general learning programmes with a vocational perspective: employment related skills; enterprise education; career education; work based learning and community-based learning. This year, seventy students sought national competencies in Business and Information Technology. A similar number joined the Structured Workplace Learning Programme (Instep) Next year close to twenty students will enrol in the Certificate in Sport and Recreation. Three will join the Mercedes College Hospitality programme. Ten staff have now done the extra work to qualify with the Certificate 1V in Assessment and Workplace Training. This is the minimum benchmark qualification required to supervise VET in Schools. Special thanks to these staff for their support of the students. Mr Bill Quartermaine, Mr Richard Cackett, Mr Roger Blatchford, MrTony Webb, Mr John Broadhead, Mr Martin Tobin, Dr Robert Braham, Mrs Marie Zwart, Mr Doug Simpson and myself. Mr Simpson will assume a more direct role next year as VET coordinator responsible for the day to day running of the programme. As a result of the Strategic Planning exercise introduced by the Principal, Mr Bothe, Trinity will see
Mr Kevin Johns an increase in resources in the Vocational area, Coordinator of Careers and Vocational Education and particularly in the Careers and Enterprise offerings. Training There will be a much stronger focus on Year 9s and 10s on the one hand, and more support for the TEE candidates on the other. We look forward to spending more time on individuals, supporting them in the wise selection of subjects and other learning choices. I will be coordinating this work. We anticipate the continuation of the successful Senior Enterprise Programme (Greenthumbs) so ably coordinated by Mrs Marie Zwart. We also look forward to the development of policy as more Government direction and support reaches into the schools, for example, “stand-alone” VET programmes; school-based traineeships and apprenticeships.
