Cross Country Sport

2

004 was an unprecedented season for the Senior Cross Country Team which succeeded in dominating this sport by winning the PSA Championship undefeated. It was the first time a Trinity Cross Country Team has achieved this. We also became winners of the P.M. Moyes Cup for the third year running – another Trinity record. An indication of the strength and depth of this sport at the College is that the Junior Team also had an undefeated season, which bodes well for future successes in this sport. This excellent result can be attributed to the spirit of the team whose determination and will to win undefeated never wanned. Adding to the strength of the team spirit was the ethos that all members are important. The aim therefore, was not just to win but to strive for success based on their own goals and to always be supportive of the efforts of all the team, not just the top fifteen runners. The commitment and passion of our inspirational coach Mr. Phil Jurjevich ensured the boys were continually challenged to seize every opportunity, to never lose the love of the sport and to always reach deep into their inner selves to find the strength and courage which would sustain them not only during the competition but also in their future after Trinity. One outstanding feature of Trinity Cross Country was that each boy was cheered home by his team members – no one was unimportant. The coaching staff of Mr. Jurjevich, Mr. Daniel Privilege and Mr. Nam Nguyen ensured that Trinity produced a formidable team. David Rossbach was again our best runner, with outstanding performances from Matt Slack-Smith, Tim Hunt and Brennan Cummuskey. Trinity’s strength lay in its depth and size with no other school being able to match the consistent speed of our top fifteen runners which was backed up on every occasion by the boys just outside the top fifteen. The team was also supported by an outstanding group of Junior runners

who were promoted to Senior level, all of whom demonstrated great courage and determination against boys twice their size. Stuart Love, an exceptional athlete, was not only the best Junior runner coming first in three of the Junior All Schools Events, but was also ranked as the sixth fastest runner within the Senior Team. Well done, Stuart. Josh Hicks, Kenneth Duggan, Joe Calabro and Nick Lee were also outstanding. This year the Hasting’s 5.8km Bridges Cup was retained by Dave Rossbach. Congratulations! It has been a privilege this year to have worked with such an outstanding group of athletes. However special mention must be made of the contributions and leadership of the Year 12 Students within the squad. This group of young men were indeed the backbone of the team, respected by all. Thanks must be given to The Team Captain David Rossbach, who was well supported by the three Vice Captains, Jordan Caine, Sam Gillies and Joel Wagner. Their leadership and dedication will be missed. It was also great to see the large number of enthusiastic parents who came to give their wholehearted support to the boys. Their presence certainly contributed to the determination of the team members and I was grateful for the huge amount of support which they offered. A heart felt thank you to all involved. I look forward to the continued success in Trinity Cross Country as we farewell the Year 12 members and see many of the Juniors now become part of the Senior Team. I know the Seniors who leave us will take with them the knowledge that through determination and commitment their goals can be achieved. Mrs Pauline Bourke Senior Cross Country Manager.
