Community Weekends

Community Weekends are an integral part of the Lyceum, memorable moments of the academic year where we are gathered as a community around a wide range of activities. Centred around the school’s guiding principles, they provide the foundations of the spirit of Zuoz. At the start of the year, they undoubtedly play a key role in creating a unity between the new members of the Lyceum and the returning students. Despite the additional complexity of this academic year with the Covid Rules and the system of clusters, each House managed to create for the first two community weekends a rich and varied programme that proved successful and was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. For the first one, all of them took part in a carousel of activities that included a workshop on respect and openness, a quiz as well as both a Badminton and photograph competition. For the second community weekend, each House organised a House trip. The Grosshaus boys crossed the boarder to do a Go-karting competition in Northern Italy. This was a much contested event and very little time separated the quickest racers. There was nonetheless a very good spirit and the adjacent waterfall proved to be a relaxing scenery and a cooling break from the Italian sunshine. Chesa Arpiglia wanted to test the nerves and the agility of their girls with a day in Parc Alpin in S-Chanf. An outdoor barbeque was a welcome treat after so much aplomb shown by all of them. Mr. Bärtsch’s Dance workshop on the following day was an opportunity for the girls to practise their coordination and the good use of space as well as

develop their creativity. The rope park was also Mittelhaus’ playing field for the day, and the long and beautiful walk to the Swiss National Park certainly did not whet their appetite for extreme sensations. Chesa Urezza enjoyed the beautiful weather during their trip to Lej da Staz with a number of games and activities organised by the Captains on the menu. The team of Captains are to be commended for their valuable input and for the key role played in welcoming and integrating all the new members of our community. We hope that the above highlights of the first two community weekends give a flavour of the essence of the community weekends; with House matches, trips, activities, PSHE (personal, social and health education) workshops, a focus on guiding principles and formal dinners, our boarders make memories that stand the test of time. This feeling of community is what makes the Lyceum Alpinum a unique place, and we ensure that all our communities are celebrated: House colours, boarding house, year groups but also our Alumni with the Winter and Summer Games. Fabien Hanique, Deputy Head of Boarding
