“When you return to Lyceum in coming years, remember that just as you will have changed so will the school have changed as well”. Patrick Steger, Vice-President of the Zuoz Club, shared this advice on 6 July, 2024, in his address to the Graduation Ceremony, and my thoughts as I listened to his excellent speech were about how much this incredible institution changes and develops every year! My first year in leading this extraordinary school has been an honour because of the dedication of our incredible students, staff and board of directors in their dedication to its continued improvement.
I am particularly proud of the commitment of staff in our collaboration with the researchers of the Pädagogische Hochschule FHNW in practicing and implementing the “Visible Learning” pedagogical strategies from the most famous living educational researcher, John Hattie. Every minute that we have with our students is a precious resource and our staff are dedicated to using the most effective evidence-based strategies to make learning as exciting, engaging and effective as possible.
The pace of development in our facilities is also remarkable, with the complete renovation of the original Girls’ Boarding House in July 2024 to create a third Girls’ House, “Chesa Crasta”. This beautiful new ensuite facility will provide the highest quality accommodation to the youngest girls in the first three classes. I have also seen the extraordinary work of our staff and board of directors in preparing for the renovation of Kleinhaus in the summer of 2025, which will ensure that our school campus remains the most modern and inspiring facilities of any of the Swiss boarding schools.
And whilst physical facilities are renewed, so is our commitment to “Mens sana in corpore sano” through our commitment to promoting positive habits of mind in our community. We have examined the role of mobile phones in our community, with the support of our alumna and eminent psychologist Aida Bikic (LAZ 1993–96), to ensure the latest research guides us in ensuring that young people develop positive habits of mind. We also welcomed three new educational psychologists to our staff, ensuring that the Lyceum Alpinum remains a school where the individual needs of students are best understood and supported, where all students can thrive in an environment that supports their healthy academic and personal development.

«Wenn Sie in den kommenden Jahren zum Lyceum zurückkehren, denken Sie daran, dass sich die Schule ebenso verändert haben wird, wie auch Sie sich verändert haben werden.» Patrick Steger, Vizepräsident des Zuoz Clubs, gab diesen Rat am 6. Juli 2024 in seiner Ansprache bei der Abschlussfeier, und meine Gedanken, als ich seiner ausgezeichneten Rede lauschte, drehten sich darum, wie sehr sich diese unglaubliche Institution jedes Jahr verändert und weiterentwickelt! Mein erstes Jahr als Leiter dieser aussergewöhnlichen Schule war eine Ehre, dank des Engagements unserer unglaublichen Schülerinnen und Schüler, Mitarbeitenden und des Vorstands, die sich unermüdlich für die kontinuierliche Verbesserung einsetzen.
Ich bin besonders stolz auf das Engagement der Mitarbeitenden in unserer Zusammenarbeit mit den Forschenden der Pädagogischen Hochschule FHNW bei der praktischen Anwendung und Implementierung des «Visible Learning», des pädagogischen Strategien des berühmtesten lebenden Bildungsforschers John Hattie. Jede Minute, die wir mit unseren Schülerinnen und Schülern haben, ist eine kostbare Ressource, und wir sind bestrebt, die effektivsten evidenzbasierten Strategien zu nutzen, um das Lernen so spannend, motivierend und effektiv wie möglich zu gestalten.
Das Entwicklungstempo unserer Einrichtungen ist ebenfalls bemerkenswert, etwa die vollständige Renovierung des ursprünglichen Mädcheninternats im Juli 2024, um ein drittes Mädchenhaus, «Chesa Crasta», zu schaffen. Diese wunderschöne neue Unterkunft mit jeweils eigenen Bädern wird den jüngsten Mädchen in den ersten drei Klassen die höchste Qualität an Unterkünften bieten. Ich habe auch die aussergewöhnliche Arbeit unserer Mitarbeitenden und des Vorstands bei den Vorbereitungen für die Renovierung des Kleinhauses im Sommer 2025 gesehen, die sicherstellen wird, dass unser Schulcampus die modernste und inspirierendste Einrichtung aller Schweizer Internate bleibt.
Und während die physischen Einrichtungen erneuert werden, so erneuern wir auch unser Engagement für «Mens sana in corpore sano» durch unsere Verpflichtung zur Förderung positiver geistiger Gewohnheiten in unserer Gemeinschaft. Mit Unterstützung unserer Alumna und renommierten Psychologin Aida Bikic (LAZ 1993–96) haben wir die Rolle von Mobiltelefonen in unserer Gemeinschaft untersucht, um sicherzustellen, dass wir die Jugendlichen bei ihrer geistigen Entwicklung auf Grundlage der neusten Forschungsergebnisse unterstützen können. Wir haben auch drei neue Schulpsychologinnen in unser Team aufgenommen, um sicherzustellen, dass das Lyceum Alpinum eine Schule bleibt, in der die individuellen Bedürfnisse der Schülerinnen und Schüler am besten verstanden und unterstützt werden, wo alle Schülerinnen und Schüler in einem Umfeld gedeihen können, das ihre gesunde akademische und persönliche Entwicklung fördert.

In April, the team of the newly opened location of the EFG Bank in St. Moritz invited the economics & law students from Year 5 for a day full of portfolio building and activities around investing. The event with the name “Investment Day” is a tradition from the Credit Suisse times and we are thrilled the event series continues with the committed team of EFG Bank.
Being welcomed for the opening in the Scala Cinema St. Moritz was already a special start to the day – quite a place to meet the investment bankers and receive first insights into their daily business. In interactive sessions, the 22 students familiarized themselves with different types of investments, revolving around shares, bonds and commodities, and learned that the key is a balanced portfolio. After a wonderful lunch with engaging discussions and a call to the trading floor, the students took off in groups to build a portfolio themselves for a “new client”.
The day was concluded with the students taking to the cinema stage and presenting their portfolio suggestions to the panel of investment experts from EFG Bank. The determination and dedication of the students left the experts and teachers in awe. We are convinced that this day left a lasting impact on the young minds and might have paved the way for a career path, or two…

The second semester of the 2023/2024 academic year saw the culmination of the winter season for ECAs, theatrical productions, an awards evening and the summer season with the annual Summer Games on the final weekend of the school year.
The Lyceum Alpinum’s cricket team had their first tournament of 2024 on the frozen lake in St. Moritz, competing against adult teams from across the world. The students adapted well to a format change due to weather conditions and achieved their first win at the tournament in 8 years. They started with a strong performance with the ball in hand and then chased down the opposition's total, with a third-year student hitting the winning runs off the last ball. Such a performance sparked jubilant celebrations, not only from the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz players but also among neutral spectators.
This spring 32 students were selected to represent the schools boys and girls footbal teams on the annual international tour. The team travelled to Madrid and Lisbon, playing matches and gaining cultural expriences such as flamenco dacing and watching a Real Madrid match at the Santiago Bernabéu. Both teams won their tours, represented the school well and the girls team event went undefeated again.
The students competed against the members of the Zuoz Club in the annual Summer Games, the Lyceum’s longstanding
multi-sport tournament. The tournament was blessed with excellent weather and outstanding performances in each sport. The results were quite even throughout the weekend. This started during the day on Friday when the Zuoz Club won the team golf event, but a Lyceum student achieved the best individual performance.
In the evening, the students took the lead overnight with a battling win in football. The Fives matches the next morning were evenly contested, but the final cumulative score was a strong win for the Zuoz Club. While Fives was being concluded, both the Lyceum girls and boys volleyball teams secured convincing wins over a mixed Zuoz Club team. The tennis was the last event to conclude up on the main campus and remarkably ended in a draw. This set up an exciting final event, cricket. The Zuoz Club won the 2nd team match, however, in what is almost certainly their strongest performance in many years, the Lyceum Alpinum secured a strong win in the 1st XI cricket match. This meant that the school won the Summer Games 2024 and retained the Summer Games for the first time since 2007.

With this being the first year of the Extra-Curricular Activities, it also included a new annual awards evening recognising the success of students in their different ECAs during the 2023/2024 school year. There were three types of awards given at the event: Most Valuable Player/Member in each ECA, Most Improved Player/Member in each ECA, and a Gordon Spencer award for especially meritorious contribution to extra-curricular activities (one boy and one girl). The roles and responsabilities that a house parent fulfills are as wide ranging as they are important for the nuturing of students.
THE START OF THE DAY IN KLEINHAUS
In Kleinhaus we wake up at 06:00 and at 06:30 I open the gate to the house. In Kleinhaus pupils are trusted to get up on their own. Those who cannot manage it are woken up.
At 06:45 we go to breakfast and take a register, it is important that we all eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast. Once everyone is present it is lesson time. If someone is marked as missing, we look for them in their room and the medical centre. Then it is room check. In the junior houses we check each room daily. There are many reasons for this. A tidy room helps us know where all of our things are.
LATE MORNING IN KLEINHAUS
Just before morning break and lunch, we go to the front office to collect packages which have been delivered and we message the boarders who have packages delivered. A wide variety of things come from posters and books to jackets and cologne, lots and lots of cologne.
Between break and lunch there is usually a meeting other admin for us to complete. One such meeting is the Head of Year meeting. This is between a Head of House and a Head of Year. It happens weekly or more frequently depending on if there have been any issues. This meeting is to ensure a smooth experience for the pupil between both academics and boarding it also serves to provide all round care.
EVENING IN KLEINHAUS
Every other Friday we have a house meal with 5 or 6 boarders. Fondue, both Chinese and Swiss is popular as is pizza. This is a chance to relax in in the evening and chat about the week. It is a good opportunity to get to know everyone in a social way.
LIGHTS OUT
At 22:00 the gate closes, and everyone must be in their own rooms at 22:15. A night register is completed and this is a great chance to check in on anyone who may have been feeling down earlier in the day or to congratulate someone again for an achievement.

Jon Bird, Head of Kleinhaus and Robotics teacher at Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, shares his experiences of moving from the UK during the pandemic, the joys and challenges of boarding school life, and the unique spirit of Zuoz that fosters curiosity and perseverance among students.
WHAT’S THE BEST BIT ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I get to nurture the young people in my care as they grow not just physically but also as people. When they join the school, most of them are not as tall as me, and when they leave, most of them are taller than me. Seeing the students change from boys to young men is a great privilige. The relationships that you develop with them are especially interesting as you often see a different side of the student than you would see in a classrom.
When students start they often resent the expectations us house parents have of them. But by the time that they graduate they can appreciate that is was always with the intent of helping them.
WHAT ABOUT THE SIDE NO ONE SEES, CAN YOU TELL US SOME MORE ABOUT IT?
There is a lot to running a house which no one sees. From collecting data on students experience (from room checks to mood checks) and developing meaningful relationships with both the students and their parents. All of these require work which no one really sees. As the system administrator for Orah, our boarding software, I get to try out different things on the system. These things take time to get right and will never be perfect, but we can make progress.
WHERE DO YOU FIND THE VALUE OF BEING AT LYCEUM ALPINUM ZUOZ?
In one word: Curiosity. I can be teaching robotics and fixing a robot or trying to get a piece of code to work. Then I can go back to the house and have a discussion about the history of art with a pupil who has a family involved in art. Everyone’s background is unique, and that is the fun of boarding. The setbacks we have in robotics and coding are the same ones we have in life, just on a smaller scale. Curiosity and perseverance are values I really try to encourage both in lessons and in the house.
WHAT DOES THE SPIRIT OF ZUOZ MEAN TO YOU?
Except for something difficult to translate into Chinese, I ended up saying enduring values that are adopted, shared and upheld by the different members of our diverse community.
I think in this valley, with the role Romansch plays, the spirit of Zuoz is appreciating what you have got but also looking out to see what else there is. We have Italian culture to the south and a more Germanic culture to the north. Add to that our international staff and students and Zuoz becomes a really diverse mix of cultures. But we have shared values.
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE SCHOOL?
The common room speaking to the pupils, that’s for sure.
In May 2024, ten international students and two teachers travelled to Prejmer, in central Romania, to take part in a two week service learning project, working with children from a disadvantaged Roma community.
Prejmer is a small town in Transylvania. Quiet streets of single-storey houses stretch out from an ornate Orthodox church and a primary school, located in the centre of the town. The primary school is where our group of Lyceum volunteers has come to work with children from a local Roma community. On our first day in the school, we see for ourselves what our local partners have already told us; Prejmer is a disadvantaged area in one of Europe’s least affluent countries. We see this in the quality of their classroom equipment: chalkboards and walls of flaking paint and faded, hand-drawn posters.
The Lyceum students are apprehensive on their first morning in the school. They have prepared crafts and some simple English lessons for the children but are daunted by the prospect of meeting the children for the first time. But while the school infrastructure is basic and worn, the local children are boisterous and full of beans and they surround and spontaneously embrace the Lyceum students, clearly very excited to have a group of volunteers from Switzerland. The affection of the Romanian children is an instant icebreaker and our volunteers are quickly doing crafts, practising basic English and playing basketball. Some of these things are easier than others for the local children. We see that some have only very basic reading ability, despite their age of nine or ten.
We spend a week in this school and learn more about the community these children are from. We learn how to refer to the community, properly, as Roma. We share other words we know from our languages. Gitano. Zigeuner. Gypsy. We see that these words evoke a certain image. None is a simple descriptor. We talk about why we think the things we do about these people, and we talk about half a million black triangles in concentration camps.
Romania today has the largest Roma population in Europe. We are told that most of the children from the Roma community in Prejmer are growing up in single-parent families. In some cases, neither parent is present and children are brought up by grandparents. Unemployment is high and adults often move to different communities for work. One of the boys we are working with shares a room with his six half-brothers. His grandmother, with limited means, is trying to raise all seven boys. Unsurprisingly,

school attendance is sporadic. The Romanian government provides more social assistance to families if children attend school. But the children we are working with have missed so much basic schooling, that they will probably not be able to catch up and graduate with a high school diploma. There is violence and conflict in the community too, and a social worker is present and in close proximity to the children at all times during their school day.
Over the week we work in this school, real bonds develop between Lyceum students and the Roma children. Maggie Lin (I5) says she is amazed by the enthusiasm of the children. Their reading and writing skills are much lower they would normally be at their age, and yet when they come to the classroom to work with the Lyceum students, their desire to learn is so strong, that their regular teacher has to hold them back at the classroom door to prevent them chaotically stampeding into the room. Real connections develop. Jocelyn Tao (I5) works with a boy named Raul. He is bright and desperate to learn and Jocelyn finds it heartwrenching to leave him on the last day, knowing some of the problems he faces in his community.
I notice how strong the desire is among the local boys to connect with the male Lyceum students. Every morning, the Roma boys overwhelm our I3 boys with embraces and fist-bumps and look to Demir, Dennis, Brandon and Jacob as older brothers. By the end of the week, thanks to Jacob,
every Roma boy has learned to say, “I got you, bro”. But, of course, no one has really got these boys. Without better education and the opportunities that come with it, their problems will be the same ones faced by their fathers and grandfathers.
As well as working directly with the local children, the Lyceum students have been asked to paint a mural on one of the walls of the school. Our ten students really come together on this (full credit to the girls for their artistic direction) and we leave one wall of the school brighter than when we arrive. The mural we leave behind is a reflection of our international group and features the Shanghai skyline, the Swiss Alps, a Russian bear, Thai temple, flamenco dancer and the flags of Hong Kong and Turkey. We are also able to donate money that has been raised by the Student Organisation of the Lyceum and this money will help the school buy sports and arts equipment.
This trip was a reminder to everyone who participated that there is hardship even on the world’s wealthiest continent. It also taught us that there is only one way to really understand a community of people, and the first step is to forget everything you have heard about them.

Under the title “Envisioning Tomorrow”, students from the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz worked together with “[y]our 2040” for several weeks on newspaper articles from the future.
[Y]our 2040 is a global movement that was founded in 2017. The overarching goal of the movement is to actively shape the most positive future possible and to initiate progressive changes with innovative projects and ideas. The community meets annually for this purpose. In 2024, the third meeting with the theme “Envisioning Tomorrow” took place in collaboration with the InnHub La Punt. InnHub is the host and co-organizer of the conference and ensures local anchoring.
ENGADIN IN FOCUS
The [y]our 2040 meeting dealt with a current topic and focused on the Engadin as it will look in 2040. Since March,
the students have been meeting with the [y]our 2040 team and the responsible teacher Andrina Brunner for the project as learning futurologists.
“Together we learned to first look back into the past to understand how the future was imagined back then – and to learn from this how we can imagine the future,” says Brunner. “We discussed the biggest tasks and questions facing us and included possible opportunities. In doing so, we examined how we can turn these challenges into opportunities and positive solutions”.
To illustrate the topic, we present two texts covering hypothetical future challenges written by the participants Adely and Samira, M3, and Elsa, Helena and Emma, I5.
Fünfeinhalb Jahre nach der Zerstörung des Gebäudes des Lyceums Alpinum in Zuoz können die Schülerinnen und Schüler in Kürze wieder in die Schule zurückkehren. Aufgrund der verheerenden Lawine im Frühjahr 2035 musste das Schulgebäude von Grund auf neu gebaut werden. Seit der Gründung 1904 hat das Lyceum Alpinum das Engadin stark geprägt. Dadurch dass im Lyceum sowohl Schüler und Schülerinnen aus dem Engadin, als auch aus der ganzen Welt unterrichtet wurden, führte es unzählige Menschen unterschiedlichster Herkunft zusammen. So entstand ein starker Zusammenhalt der Schulgemeinschaft, welcher als «Spirit of Zuoz» bekannt ist. Dass das Lyceum am 1. Februar 2035 durch eine Lawine vollständig zerstört wurde, war ein grosser Schock für alle. Von einem Tag auf den anderen war der Spirit of Zuoz nämlich unter dem Schnee begraben.
WO EIN WILLE IST, IST AUCH EIN WEG
Der Schicksalsschlag stellte die Leitung des Lyceums vor eine wichtige Entscheidung: Soll das Lyceum wieder aufgebaut werden? Natürlich lautet die intuitive Antwort «Ja!», aber ein Wiederaufbau bedeutet viel Arbeit und ist sehr kostspielig. Mit einer Spendenaktion konnte innerhalb von wenigen Wochen eine hohe Summe gesammelt werden, welche mit dem Geld der Gebäudeversicherung ausreichte, um die Schule wiederaufzubauen. Somit konnten die Arbeiten binnen drei Monaten beginnen. Mit vereinten
Kräften konnte das Lyceum rechtzeitig zum Schulstart 2040 fertiggestellt werden. Mithilfe der Spendenaktion konnten sogar einige Verbesserungen finanziert werden. So wurde die Anzahl Zimmer erhöht und die Räume mit modernster Technologie ausgestattet.
DIE ZUKUNFT IM BLICK
Ein Neustart kann auch eine Chance sein. Das gilt auch für das Lyceum. Um das Lernen der Schülerinnen und Schüler bestmöglich zu fördern, wurde beim Wiederaufbau viel Wert darauf gelegt, neue technische Tools in den Schulalltag einzubringen. Beispielsweise wird nun zu der früheren LAZ-App eine neue Funktion eingeführt, bei der jede Person einen individuellen Speiseplan vorgeschlagen bekommt. Das Ziel ist es, dass sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler besser konzentrieren können und das Immunsystem gestärkt wird, damit sie weniger krank sind.
Auch das Sicherheitssystem wurde erneuert, die Türen können von nun an nicht mehr via Fingerabdruck aufgeschlossen werden, sondern nur noch mit einem IrisScanner. Zusätzlich wird es im erneuerten Gym einen KI-Coach geben. Dieser soll den Schülern Trainingsvorschläge und ein persönliches Feedback geben. Für das kommende Schuljahr hat sich die neue Schulleitung hohe Ziele gesteckt. Da sich in den letzten fünf Jahren, in denen das Lyceum geschlossen war und die Schülerinnen und Schüler zu Hause unterrichtet
werden mussten, viel im Bildungssystem verändert hat, muss das Lyceum einiges nachholen. Ein erster Schritt ist die Auflösung der Klassen. Somit wird es ab diesem Schuljahr keine Jahrgangsgruppen mehr geben. Die Schülerschaft soll nach Niveau und Interessen aufgeteilt werden und dadurch mehr Freiheiten erhalten, um ihren Interessen nachzugehen. The time has come for us to reluctantly say goodbye to our beloved Snow-Polo tradition. However, exciting events are ahead. So, keep on reading to find out what St. Moritz has in store for the upcoming summer.
Following the tragic series of events which occurred at last year’s snow polo event, our local government made the executive decision to cancel this year’s festivities, leaving many loyal fans and supporters of the Snow Polo disappointed and frustrated. After a horse’s impact on the already fragile ice caused a huge crack resulting in the stands going down in the lake, the organizers knew the ongoing tradition would be at risk. Thousands of disappointed spectators felt the incompleteness of the winter season after the loss of Polo, leading us to a significant reduction in tourism rates during the weeks leading up to March. After witnessing what climate change did to our esteemed Snow Polo and the economy, St. Moritz Tourism has decided to host its very first “Sun Polo” this summer in the hopes of reviving the longstanding culture this event brings to the valley. They hope to recapture the sense of community this event has brought to St. Moritz, but this time in a safer and more sustainable way. We are just a few weeks away from
opening night and feel the excitement Polo awakes locally and globally. Let us enlighten you with what you can expect from St. Moritz’s first Sun Polo event.
In the wake of the tragic ice breakage incident during the Snow Polo World Cup in 2040, St. Moritz, there isn't just closure of this chapter of the famous tradition, which has given many people joy, but also an opportunity for St. Moritz to embrace a new, vibrant tradition; Sun Polo. Set against the beautiful views in the Engadin Valley, Sun Polo will transform the green meadows of the former airport in Samedan into a sporting area with the same high-stakes polo matches and festivities. Where the airport used to be 5 years ago, closed due to regulations of flying in exchange for solar-powered drone-operated transport, which will not only be able to bring guest directly to the event, but will also be able to deliver refreshments directly to you on the Stands from the ‘Sun Fun Drone’ app which is free to download. Now there will be Sun Polo; the event which will not only highlight the traditional snow-polo game with skilled horses and players but also continue to celebrate the local community with gourmet food stalls, live music, art, and activities for all ages. Sun Polo is set to create unforgettable summer memories, just like the unforgettable winter memories, making the Engadin a beacon of innovation in sports tourism.
Whilst the events that took place last winter were tragic, forcing us to reluctantly say goodbye to a famously loved St Moritz tradition, it is important to think positively on how this will affect our beloved valley today. Whilst hiking and lake swimming may not be as popular for many, then skiing and ice skating is. Avid polo enthusiasts will still come and support the game, despite playing on ice and grass. This year we are anticipating a turn up of roughly 15,000 people. Whilst this may not be as popular as previous years, this attraction will hopefully grow, especially when people realise how the Engadin hills truly are alive with the sound of music, flowers and beauty. Not only this, however we are truly advocating for more sustainable tourism now with latest introduction of drone operated transport. These solar driven drones will be enabling guests to arrive directly at Samedan, where the polo is taking place, without emitting large amounts of CO2, which previous Private Jets did. So, do not let the dreary events from last winter bring us down, but rather excite us for the upcoming changes in our valley!

Life at Lyceum Alpinum, as in many international schools around the world, for a major part takes places in English. Therefore, it is a priority for all learners to become fluent and literate in English as quickly as possible.
To make the English learning experience alive and exciting, the English B course of I 1/2 under the guidance of Catalina von Crayen and EAL coordinator Laura Esteban set out during the winter months to discover one of the most renowned literary figures: Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Reading original texts, watching a movie adaptation and playing mystery games were all part of the journey. The
A rich American family went on a vacation in New York and rented a Penthouse. Mysteriously 3 killings happened there. The family consisted of the dad, mother and two sisters, but the father wasn't killed that night.
The dad called one of the best detectives in the world for help, his name was Javier. When the detective came, the dad told him that he had left the house for one day because of his work and when he came back, all of his family was dead, and two guns were on the floor near their bodies.
The detective took the guns for a fingerprint check, to see any matches with any of the killers he knew. After checking the fingerprints, he found out it was Oliver West, the criminal that he couldn't catch the last time, because Javier almost got shot.
Javier knew where all of Oliver’s friends were, so he went there to check whether Oliver was also there. When he came to that place, it was a bar, he went to the best friend of Oliver to ask where he was. Oliver’s friend Richard didn't answer, so Javier took a gun out and pointed it at him and asked the same question “Where is Oliver?!!”. At that point, Richard gave the answer immediately. Javier had to shoot Richard, so he wouldn't tell Oliver was in danger to all the mafia members.
After Javier took the information that Richard gave him, he went to his house on 5th Avenue. When he came into the house, his door was open. That shocked Javier. He didn't know what to do, and entered. He then heard a TV playing an old creepy song and a person sitting on the sofa. Javier
ultimate challenge for the learners of English was to create an original detective character themselves… and of course to write an original mystery story.
The winner of the competition was kindly elected by Christina Cuk, the committed international librarian of Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz:
knew it was Oliver, so he took his gun and started shooting (“Oliver, it's me, Javier, everything is over! Come with me or I will kill you!”) Oliver didn't move at all. Javier knew that this was weird, and he came closer to him, and he saw that he had already been killed by someone else. Javier knew that the only people that knew about this incident were him and the dad of the family that got killed. Javier informed the police about the dead body.
On the way to the dead family dad’s house, he called the police to the dad's house because he now wasn't sure who the killer was. He immediately drove to the fathers' house; this door was also open! He was scared that the dad had been killed too. He ran into the house without thinking. When he entered, the door slammed shut behind him. He turned around to see… and he saw the father holding a gun pointed at Javier, saying: “Well done, Javier now it's your time to die!” He shot Javier.
When the police came to the house Javier was already dead and the father wasn't in the house anymore. After checking, the police understood who had killed everyone and had put fake fingerprints on the gun initially.

DIE RÖMISCHE SKLAVEREI: EINBLICKE IN DAS LEBEN DER SKLAVEN IM ANTIKEN ROM
In unserem Latein-Gruppenprojekt in der ersten Klasse des Gymnasiums habe ich über die römische Sklaverei recherchiert. Dabei fand ich besonders interessant, dass schöne Sklaven oft teurer waren. Viele Menschen glauben wahrscheinlich, dass alle Sklaven gleich waren, aber das stimmt nicht.
ZWEI ARTEN VON SKLAVEN:
HAUS- UND FELDSKLAVEN
Es gab zwei grosse Gruppen von Sklaven im Römischen Reich: Haussklaven und Feldsklaven. Haussklaven arbeiteten im Haushalt und musizierten bei Festen. Feldsklaven arbeiteten in der Landwirtschaft. Die Haussklaven hatten oft eine freundschaftliche Beziehung zu ihren Herren und wurden, wenn sie gut ausgebildet waren, als Hauslehrer oder Ärzte eingesetzt. Meistens wurden sie zwischen dem 30. und 40. Lebensjahr freigelassen. Feldsklaven hatten es nicht so gut. Sie mussten bei Bauprojekten arbeiten, die sehr anstrengend waren. Besonders schlimm war es für die Sklaven in Bergwerken; die meisten von ihnen überlebten keine zehn Monate.
SKLAVEN ALS WARE UND HEUTIGE ARBEITSKRÄFTE
Sklaven wurden im Römischen Reich wie Ware angesehen und als «sprechende Geräte» behandelt. Sie hatten keine Persönlichkeitsrechte, sie durften nicht heiraten und hatten keine Familien- oder Besitzrechte. Ihre Herren konnten sie schlagen, ausbeuten oder wieder verkaufen, wenn sie wollten. Es gibt noch heute viele Arbeitskräfte auf der Welt, die unter schwierigen und nicht zeitgemässen Arbeitsbedingungen leiden. Oft sind sie in der Bekleidungs- oder Elektronikindustrie tätig und weben zum Beispiel Kleidung.
TECHNOLOGIE ALS AUSWEG
Um die Arbeitsbedingungen zu verbessern, schlage ich vor, mehr Technologie einzusetzen. In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Technologie schnell entwickelt, und es ist möglich, Roboter zu benutzen. Diese haben keine Gefühle und Emotionen, sie sind vielseitig einsetzbar und sind eine bessere Alternative.
KREATIVE GESTALTUNG MEINES POSTERS
Für mein Poster habe ich die Ränder der Seiten mit einem Feuerzeug braun gemacht (unter Aufsicht von Frau Dambrine und in der Nähe von Schnee). Dann habe ich die Rückseite mit Kaffee und Tee gefärbt, wodurch auch die Vorderseite ein bisschen braun wurde.
Dieses Projekt hat mir viel über die römische Sklaverei beigebracht und gezeigt, dass es wichtig ist, sich mit der Vergangenheit und den heutigen Herausforderungen auseinanderzusetzen.

Erfolg, Engagement und ein Blick in die Zukunft
Rektor Oliver Hartwright eröffnete die diesjährige Graduation mit inspirierenden Worten. Dabei würdigte er die Leistungen der Abschlussklassen und dankte den Eltern für deren Unterstützung, die massgeblich zu diesen Erfolgen beigetragen hat.
Hartwright hob hervor, dass die Absolventinnen und Absolventen während ihrer Schulzeit und besonders im letzten Jahr aussergewöhnliche Anstrengungen unternommen haben. Über die Jahre hinweg haben sie Aufsätze geschrieben, Laborexperimente durchgeführt, Sprachen gelernt, mathematische Herausforderungen gemeistert und am Crosslauf teilgenommen – ob sie wollten oder nicht. Die Abschlusszeugnisse spiegeln das Ergebnis dieser jahrelangen Arbeit wider. Ihre Intelligenz, ihr Talent und ihr Engagement verdienen höchste Anerkennung. Er ermutigte die Absolventinnen und Absolventen, nie aufzuhören, hart zu arbeiten, um Ihre Lebensziele zu erreichen, denn das sei der Geist von Zuoz.
In seiner Rede zitierte Hartwright Angela Merkel, die einmal vor einem internationalen Publikum dazu aufrief, die Mauern der Ignoranz einzureissen, mit den Worten: «Nichts muss so bleiben, wie es war.» Er verwies auch auf Roger Federer, der betonte, dass seine scheinbare Mühelosigkeit auf dem Tennisplatz das Resultat unzähliger Trainingsstunden sei.
Der Rektor erinnerte die Abschlussklassen daran, dass die Freundschaften, die sie hier am Lyceum Alpinum geschlossen haben, auf gemeinsamen Werten und Erfahrungen beruhen. Diese Verbindungen werden ein Leben lang halten und verkörpern den wahren Spirit of Zuoz. «Heute feiern wir Ihren Erfolg! Aber was wirklich zählt, ist, was Sie aus diesem Erfolg machen.» Er zitierte Winston Churchill: «Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts».
Zum Ausklang seiner Rede richtete er motivierende Worte an die Absolventinnen und Absolventen: «Leben Sie auch nach dem heutigen Tag die Werte von Freundlichkeit, Fokussierung, harter Arbeit und Freundschaft, die Ihnen helfen werden, unsere Welt zum Besseren zu verändern.» Anschliessend übergab er das Wort an die School Captains Barbara Chaves und Sebastiano Prospero.
Diese gewährten dem Publikum einen kurzweiligen Einblick in ihren Schulalltag von der M3 bis heute, zur Graduation. Ihre Rede sorgte für Lacher und regte zum Nachdenken an.
Sie bedankten sich bei ihren Eltern, Lehrpersonen, den Internatsmitarbeitenden und der Schulleitung für die Unterstützung, die sie während ihrer Schulzeit erfahren durften. Besonderer Dank galt allen Beteiligten, die diese Abschlussfeier gestaltet hatten, so dass sie zu einer würdigen Krönung ihrer Zeit am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz werden konnte.
Die School Captains beendeten ihre Rede mit einem lateinischen Zitat: «Omnia mea mecum porto», was bedeutet: «Alles, was mein ist, trage ich mit mir». Die wichtigsten Besitztümer im Leben sind nicht materiell, sondern Erfahrungen, Eigenschaften und Werte. «Diese prägenden Erlebnisse nehmen wir aus unserer Zeit am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz mit. Dank dieser wertvollen Besitztümer gehen wir zuversichtlich und optimistisch in unsere Zukunft.»
Zwei Lehrpersonen gaben auf unterschiedliche Weise einen Rückblick auf die gemeinsame Zeit mit den Abschlussklassen und richteten einen Ausblick in die Zukunft. Herr Andres Bühlmann betonte: «Was immer die Schülerinnen und Schüler in Zukunft angehen werden, sie sollen es mit Leidenschaft tun. Dabei sollten sie sich keine allzu langfristigen Ziele setzen, sondern sich mit Hingabe auf ihre kurzfristigen Projekte konzentrieren. Wer stets zu weit nach vorne blickt, übersieht die grossen Chancen, die sich direkt vor der Nase bieten.»
Stephen Rix, the Lyceum’s Subject Leader for English A, captivated the audience by stressing that life, even school life, is about much more than grades. He showed a short film from 1896, of a woman standing on Vienna’s Ringstrasse, waiting for someone who never appears, illustrating the risks of passively waiting for your life to unfold. Mr. Rix encouraged the graduating class to actively shape their own futures, rather than drifting through life waiting for opportunities: «take control, and create your own path».
Patrick Steger, Vizepräsident des Zuoz Clubs, sprach auf einnehmende Weise über die Werte des Zuoz Clubs. Er unterstrich dabei den «Spirit of Zuoz», der das Schulleben am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz begleitet. Dieser Geist fördert Respekt und Toleranz im Umgang miteinander, ein starkes
Verantwortungsbewusstsein und Engagement. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler werden ermutigt, eine lebenslange Neugier und Lernbereitschaft zu entwickeln, ihre kreativen Talente zu entfalten und innovative Lösungen zu finden.
Diese Werte helfen ihnen, sich zu selbstbewussten und verantwortungsvollen globalen Bürgern zu entwickeln, die ihre Zukunft aktiv gestalten.
Ein weiterer Höhepunkt des Nachmittags und eine gelebte Tradition war die Vergabe der speziellen Ehrungen und die Verleihung der Colours für aussergewöhnliche schulische, persönliche und sportliche Leistungen. Danach überreichten der Rektor, der Prorektor und Leiter Matura und die Leiterin der Internationalen Abteilung die Abschlusszeugnisse.
Ein besonderer Dank gilt der Schulband, die zwischen den Reden und Ehrungen mit gelungenen Stücken die Feier musikalisch umrahmte und für eine stimmungsvolle Atmosphäre sorgte.
Zum Schluss richtete Rektor Oliver Hartwright erneut seine Worte an die Abschlussklassen sowie an die Gäste und Familien. Er dankte den über 400 Anwesenden herzlich für ihre Teilnahme an der Feier und lobte die Absolventinnen und Absolventen für ihre herausragenden Leistungen und ihren Einsatz während ihrer Schulzeit am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz.
Nach der Zeremonie wurde ein Apéro riche serviert, bei dem alle die Gelegenheit hatten, gemeinsam zu feiern und auf die Erfolge der Schülerinnen und Schüler anzustossen. Für die Abschlussklassen, ihre Familien und Gäste setzte sich der erlebnisreiche Tag in St. Moritz fort, wo sie ihren Abschluss beim Abendessen genossen und bis in die frühen Morgenstunden im legendären Dracula Club weiterfeierten.
Am Samstag, den 6. Juli 2024, feierte das Lyceum Alpinum seine diesjährigen Absolventinnen und Absolventen. Insgesamt erhielten 33 Maturandinnen und Maturanden sowie 45 Schülerinnen und Schüler aus der Internationalen Abteilung ihre Diplome von der Schulleitung. Die Abschlussklassen erwarben die Schweizer Matura oder das IB Diploma/ Certificate.
HERAUSRAGENDE LEISTUNGEN
Ein Highlight des Nachmittags war die Würdigung der besten zwei Maturaarbeiten, beide wurden mit der Note 6 bewertet. Anna Baumgartner erhielt für ihre Arbeit mit dem Titel «Tuberkulose – wie der Mythos des heilenden Höhenklimas durch Antibiotika ersetzt wurde» Anerkennung, und Nina Koch wurde für ihr Werk «Das Leid der Tiere zugunsten menschlicher Schönheit» ausgezeichnet.
Estelle Marina Giulia Crawford Hagen aus St. Moritz wurde als beste Maturandin mit einer sensationellen Durchschnittsnote von 5.81 geehrt. Sebastiano Silvio Prospero aus Lugano folgte auf dem zweiten Platz mit der Note 5.77 sowie Valentina Alvarez Hurtado aus Samedan, die eine Durchschnittsnote von 5.73 erreichte.
ERFOLGE IN DER INTERNATIONALEN ABTEILUNG
Unter den 45 Schülerinnen und Schülern der Internationalen Abteilung erzielte George Cheung aus Hong Kong in der IB-Diplomprüfung mit 41 von 45 möglichen Punkten ein ausgezeichnetes Ergebnis. Den zweiten Platz belegte Jasper Lau, ebenfalls aus Hong Kong, mit 39 Punkten. Den dritten Platz teilen sich Cordula Fortis aus Bever sowie Jill Kant und Sky Reinecken, beide aus Hamburg, mit jeweils 38 Punkten.
Cordula Fortis erhielt zudem die Höchstnote A für ihr Extended Essay zum Thema «Black Lives Matter (BLM) und sein Einfluss auf das Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) und das Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD)».
Wir gratulieren unseren Abschlussklässlerinnen und Abschlussklässlern zu ihren hervorragenden Ergebnissen und wünschen ihnen alles Gute für ihre zukünftigen Wege. Die Auszeichnung der besten Arbeiten und der besten Abschlussnoten, neben der Vergabe der Colour Awards, waren unvergessliche Höhepunkte der Abschlussfeier.
On Saturday, July 6, the Lyceum Alpinum honored this year's graduating class. A total of 33 Matura students and 45 International Department students were presented with their diplomas by the Head of School. The graduates obtained the Swiss Matura or the IB Diploma/Certificate.
One highlight for the graduating matura students was the presentation of awards for the top two Matura theses, both of which received a grade of 6. Anna Baumgartner was recognized for her thesis ‘Tuberculosis – How the myth of the healing mountain climate was replaced by antibiotics,’ and Nina Koch for her thesis ‘The suffering of animals for human beauty.’
Estelle Marina Giulia Crawford Hagen from St. Moritz was honoured as the best Matura student with a sensational average grade of 5.81. She was closely followed by Sebastiano Silvio Prospero from Lugano with a score of 5.77 and Valentina Alvarez Hurtado from Samedan, who achieved a 5.73.
Of the 45 students in the International Section, George Cheung from Hong Kong achieved an excellent result in the IB diploma examination with 41 out of a possible 45 points. Jasper Lau, also from Hong Kong, took second place with 39 points. Third place was shared by Cordula Fortis from Bever and Jill Kant and Sky Reinecken, both from Hamburg, with 38 points each.

It is my honour to present a Triple Colour to a student who represented the school in four sports across their time at the Lyceum Alpinum. Their will to win, their passion for the fight, and their unwavering determination have time and time again been the point of difference between the Lyceum and its opponents.
Their celebration is borderline iconic, as the student turns with a clenched fists and lets out a triumphant roar. She captained the girls’ volleyball team to their first ever tournament win. It has been my pleasure to witness this student develop into the young woman she is today, on and off the sports field. I am pleased to award a Triple Colour to Cordula Fortis.
This next Triple Colour is awarded to a student who has not only been important member of the teams he has played for the school on and off the pitch. His physical agility whether on a pitch or court has only been matched by the mental agility that he demonstrates with his regular jokes, of which a few were even funny. But that attitude, that spirit, that levity, which refuses to take matters too seriously has created an
environment where his teammates are reminded of why we play sports in the first place, because it is fun. Despite his questionable desire to grow a mullet, his contribution has been significant, and I am pleased to award a Triple Colour to Jasper Lau.
School colours are awarded to students who embody the “Spirit of Zuoz,” act as role models, and support school development. The award highlights exceptional commitment to the school.
The first school colour goes to a student who has been an exemplary model of what it means to be a well-rounded and committed student. How he manages to be involved in so many aspects of school life is anyone’s guess. Academically, he has shown great dedication to his Matura studies and has often supported other students with their own academic study outside of the classroom. In the boarding house, he has been a positive member of both Kleinhaus and Grosshaus, showing great personal growth during his time at the school.
His involvement in a wide range of sports, including cricket, fives, football, tennis, volleyball, and golf, showcases his versatility and passion for athletics. He has excelled as a player in all these areas, and as the captain of our cricket team, he led the team to their first victory at cricket on ice in 8 years and their first summer games win over the old boys in a decade. Apparently, he also tops the leaderboard for most photos of himself taken in the gym.
Beyond the sports field, this student has been a pivotal part of our student organization, contributing ideas to enhance the vibrancy of student life. He has supported the leadership team with valuable input for new ideas and has been a strong advocate for the student body. In his final year, as a culmination of all his contributions, he was appointed as School Captain, an achievement voted for by his peers, highlighting the significant impact he has had on the Lyceum community. I am thrilled to award our first school colour to Sebastiano Prospero.
The second and final school colour goes to another exemplary member of our community. This student is always happy to help and support others, most notably through her years as a strong advocate for her peers on the student organization. She has ensured that the perspectives and concerns of the student body were heard and addressed, always approaching this with maturity and collaboration. As School Captain this year, she has been diligent in her work with various departments and has been instrumental in implementing a variety of projects and initiatives. Her efforts have ensured our school community truly reflects the needs of its students.
This student has also been a regular contributor to our sports program, representing the school in four different disciplines: football, volleyball, cricket, and basketball. Her dedication has not only brought the school numerous victories but has also set a remarkable standard for athletic excellence. She captained the girls’ football team to become the most successful sports team in an academic year and achieved a personal milestone with the most photos in our school’s “Hall of Fame” in Lyceum’s history. Her leadership on the sports field has been matched by her guidance and support for younger students, both on and off the pitch. She has been a role model for many, supporting new members of the community, both day students and boarders, and has also found time in her busy schedule to run several Extra Curricular Activities for other students.
On top of this she has worked hard in her studies for our Matura programme, has also helped to source and organize student merchandise, contributed to student events, supported school community activities and even helped to co-ordinate today’s graduation celebrations alongside Sebastiano.
Her work is always accomplished with a smile and a sense of collaboration and care. Her ability to balance her numerous responsibilities while maintaining a positive attitude and cheerful demeanour speaks volumes about her character and dedication. I am pleased to award our second school colour to Barbara Chaves Rodrigues.
Following tradition, the weather was kind to us at the 95th Summer Games and allowed for a lot of fun on the playing fields. After the euphoria of the 100-year anniversary in 2023, we had just enough participants to assemble teams for all sports. The Games honored the centenary of playing Eton Fives at the Lyceum by competing for the Spirit of Fives Cup.
Under challenging but excellent conditions, 25 golfers met for the annual Summer Games Tournament at the Golf Engadin St. Moritz golf course in Zuoz. Unfortunately, the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz was only able to provide six students for the tournament. Nevertheless, a good amount of golf was played in the mixed flights and the social aspect was not neglected either. The 18 holes were easily mastered, thanks to the culinary refreshments offered by the Zuoz Club. On the sporting side, Leone Zaza (Lyceum) won the gross ranking and Benedikt Lucas (Zuoz Club) won the net ranking. The six best net results were added together for the overall ranking and as a result for the Spencer Cup. Of course, the Zuoz Club had the advantage of being able to deliver strikeout results. The Zuoz Club won the team championship with 185:138 net points.
19 Old Boys had signed up for the soccer game, but only 13 turned up. What a pity, seen that we needed all the help we could get! The school scored 2:0 in the first half. When our original goalkeeper Christoph Semmelmann decided to act as defender in the second half, the game improved for the Old Boys and Dani Haering was able to score one goal. Yet the positive run did not last for long, the sunscreen frenzy of Old Boy Ferdinand Rauch resulted in a nivea puddle on which our goalkeeper slipped, and the 3:1 for the school became a reality. The school pushed it even further and deservedly won with 4:1.
On Saturday almost everyone made it on time for an early start of fives. Six official games were carried out, resulting in a win for the Zuoz Club. The Spirit of Fives cup, that will be given away for high performance in the match and in fives in general throughout this year, was won by the graduating student Lydia Wanger.
A good mixture of singles and doubles were played on the tennis courts, leaving both sides with one point. At the same time the volleyball matches took place indoors, with a dominating performance from the girls and boys school team, gaining more points for the school.
The cricket on AI started just before lunch with a 1st and 2nd team. The Zuoz Club 2nd team managed to secure a victory, whereas the 1st team lost against a strong school team with an outstanding performance of Eric Schlumberger, earning him the „Best Cricketer Award“.
It was a highlight of the match to have the Head of School Oliver Hartwright as umpire of the first team! We all very much appreciated this gesture as a sign of care for the relationship between the school and us alumni and alumnae.
For price giving, the points from all competition were counted, resulting in an overall victory for the school: Congratulations! The school teams are in very good shape, which shows that sports, and in particular fives and cricket, are a priority for the school. Old Boy Dani Haering was honoured by the president of the Zuoz Club for his special merits of reengraving all sports trophies and updating and beautifying the Zuoz Club show case, which is an important symbol for the special ties of the alumni and alumnae with the Lyceum.
We concluded the Summer Games with a sumptuous dinner at the Hotel Grace in St. Moritz. The beautiful venue honoured the achievement of the new sports captain team for the completion of their first successful Summer Games –well done, all of you!

Twenty-two students and three staff members traveled to Repton School in March for the 2024 Eton Fives Schools’ National Championships.
This was the first year that Repton School had hosted the event, and it proved a huge success, with twelve beautiful courts – that until relatively recently had been used entirely for storage purposes – now fully restored and ready for the week’s play.
After a full first day of travel via Zurich and Manchester, the squad began their campaign by entering into what proved to be a fantastically competitive “Mixed” event, with many exciting games for both players and spectators alike.
With Pool matches allowing only the top two pairs from each group to progress, the challenge proved slightly too tough for a number of the less experienced Lyceum pairings. However, Fives Captain Fred Yao and his partner Jocelyn Tao battled their way through into the latter stages of the tournament, ultimately losing 2-1 in the Plate B Final in a desperately close-fought match against a talented pair from Wrekin School.
Special mention must go to the younger partnership of Nicole Lau and Kai Büchi, playing in their first Championship together, displaying a very mature approach to the game with spells of brilliant play; clearly a pair for the future in this event.
With eight squad members relatively new to the game, it was very pleasing to see the more experienced players pairing up and helping to encourage those who were clearly out of their comfort zone. Not only did this help establish some new friendships, but it also helped dispel any nerves that were present for those who were less accustomed to Tournament Fives.
With a full day of play now complete, all players were ready and well-versed for the second day of play. This second day saw all girls and boys branch out into their respective “Festival” Tournaments. It is important to remember that the “Festival” events pose a particularly difficult challenge –with players from within any school age group being allowed entry. This not only makes for some interesting match-ups
each round but also guarantees that younger pairs must raise their standard of play to progress through to the latter rounds.
Despite a few aches and pains incurred from day one, all worked hard in the group knockout stages, with a good percentage of Lyceum pairs progressing through to the second and third rounds. While most finally met their match at this stage, there were several pairs who had clearly found their rhythm on the court.
Kai Büchi (14) and Konstantin Winterfeld (15) played magnificently all day, defeating a number of dangerous opponents and earning a place in the Boys’ Main Festival Final against a technically sound pair of U18s from Aldenham School. Most encouraging was their mental strength – as displayed in set 1 – with Kai and Konstantin coming back from being 10-1 down to force their opponents to close them out by 12 points to 6. With newfound confidence, the Lyceum pair fought tirelessly in set 2, forcing the older, more experienced pair to play their best Fives of the tournament. Although Kai and Konstantin ultimately lost the final 12-6 / 12 -9, they put themselves on the map with an excellent display.
Meanwhile, Seraina Gotsch, Linda Qiu and Öykü Ersoy –who had been allowed to rotate within a pairing – each took home a winner’s medal having narrowly defeated fellow Lyceum teammates Sofiia Stryzhova and Iryna Vatamanuik in the Plate B Final. Auryn Rix and Gabriel D’Ambrosio also proved victorious in the Boys’ Plate A Final.
Just as most matches were drawing to a close, Jocelyn Tao and Maggie Lin reached the Final of the Girls’ Main Festival, having steadily raised their standard of play through previous rounds. Playing against Repton’s first pair, Jocelyn and Maggie were always in control regarding the set-piece requirements of “Cut” and “Return of Cut”. While the Reptonian pair fought hard during the rallies, they were never quite able to return enough of Maggie and Jocelyn’s Cuts. Maggie and Jocelyn won the Final by 2 sets to 0.
This was a fantastic achievement by both players, and by winning the title, the The Lyceum defended their Girls’ Open Festival Title for the second year in a row.
The entire squad represented the Lyceum incredibly well, both on and off court. “Let calls” and general on-court etiquette were praised by numerous spectators, and it is clear that each member of the squad learned a lot from the experience. Let us see if the Lyceum can claim the hat-trick next year!

1924 war ein bedeutendes Jahr für das Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz. Damals hatte der Games Master, Mr. Gordon Spencer, die einmalige Gelegenheit, drei Fives Courts an der Schule zu bauen. Hundert Jahre später ist Fives immer noch ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Sportangebots am Lyceum.
In den 1950er Jahren pflegte Spencer eine enge Freundschaft mit der Old Citizens School in London, eine Freundschaft, die dank des grossen Engagements der Familie Büchi auch heute noch besteht. Deshalb waren die Old Citizens herzlich eingeladen, an der Feier zum 100-jährigen Bestehen teilzunehmen. Auch der Fives Club aus Genf und der Fives Club aus Zürich waren bei der Feier vertreten. Renato Büchi, der Fives Keeper des Zuoz Clubs Zürich, übernahm die gesamte Organisation für diesen besonderen Anlass.
Die Engländer reisten bereits am Freitagvormittag in Zürich an. Einige Old Citizens wurden direkt am Flughafen von Old Boys in Empfang genommen, und gemeinsam machten sie sich auf den Weg nach Zuoz. Am Lyceum angekommen, gab es zur Begrüssung eine kleine Aufwärmrunde in den Fives Courts. Anschliessend begab man sich in die Hotels und bereitete sich auf das Abendessen vor.
Mitten in Zuoz, im Hotel Crusch Alva, wurde man herzlich mit einem kleinen Aperitif empfangen. Im grossen Saal gab es ein Drei-Gänge-Menü, und die Stimmung war ausgelassen und heiter. Nach dem Hauptgang erhob sich Renato Büchi und eröffnete die Feierlichkeiten. Er begrüsste alle Anwesenden und erläuterte die etwas kompliziert erscheinende Spielvariante für das Turnier. Auch wenn einige Anwesende nach seinen Erklärungen ein wenig konfus wirkten, war man sich sicher, dass die Spielvariante wohl einen Sinn ergeben würde. Nach dem Dessert blieb man nicht lange auf, denn man wollte schliesslich fit in das Turnier am nächsten Tag starten.
Der Samstag begann gut, da alle pünktlich zu den ersten Anweisungen und dem Gruppenfoto am Rondell erschienen. Regen war angesagt, und die Spieler, die in den überdachten Courts spielen durften, beklagten sich nicht. In den Upper Courts ohne Dach war es vielleicht ein wenig nass, doch die Begeisterung der Teilnehmer für das Spiel blieb über das gesamte Turnier ungebrochen.
Der Samstagabend wurde durch ein köstliches Abendessen in der Dorta und mitreissende Reden abgerundet, die zur festlichen Atmosphäre beitrugen. Während der Veranstaltung wurden die Zuozer mit einem Silberteller geehrt, ein grosszügiges Geschenk der Old Citizens. Darüber hinaus hielt Matt Chinery von der Eton Fives Association eine Rede und überreichte der Schule ein wunderschönes Gemälde der oberen Fives-Plätze am Lyceum.
Am Sonntag fand der Höhepunkt des Turniers mit den Finalspielen statt. Die besten 24 Spieler kämpften hart aber fair um den Engadin Challenge Cup, während die nachfolgenden 24 Spieler um den Queen's Cup antraten. Nach mehreren intensiven und lang umkämpften Spielen gingen Auryn und Jason als Sieger des Queen's Cup hervor.
Renato Büchi und sein Partner Alex Constantine, ebenfalls Old Boy, hatten einen regelrechten Lauf im Turnier am Sonntag und gelangten rasch in den entscheidenden Final des Engadin Challenge Cup. Da hatten Abs Bhattacharya (Old Citizen) und Alexander Heuberger weit mehr Mühe, sich im Turnier zu halten. Im Viertelfinale wurden sie von dem Schüler Kai Büchi und Old Citizen Alex Abrahams herausgefordert, ein enges Spiel, das sie nur knapp für sich entscheiden konnten. Auch der Halbfinal verlief alles andere als rund, Peter Süess und sein Partner Aroop hatten weitestgehend das Spielgeschehen im Griff. Beim Stand von 10:9 rafften sich Abs und Heubi nochmals auf und gewannen das Spiel. Danach warteten bereits Renato und Alex. Die Kraftreserven schienen aufgebraucht, Renato und Alex führten die erschöpften Spieler regelrecht vor. Nach kurzer Zeit stand es bereits 8:1, da war nichts mehr zu machen. Büchi und Alex gewannen mit hohem Vorsprung den Final verdient mit 12:3. Man konnte den beiden zu ihrem Erfolg nur gratulieren.
Zur Feier von 100 Jahren Eton Fives am Lyceum sponserte der Zuoz Club eine besondere Trophäe, um diejenige Person zu ehren, die den Spirit of Fives während des Turniers am besten verkörperte. Diese Auszeichnung wurde an einen Spieler vergeben, der nicht nur regelmässig Fives spielt und sich während des Turniers erheblich gesteigert hatte, sondern auch stets beispielhafte Fairness zeigte. Der diesjährige verdiente Empfänger der Trophäe ist Auryn, ein Schüler des Lyceums.
Die Feier fand ihren Abschluss bei einem gemütlichen Mittagessen auf A.I. Nach der Preisverleihung hiess es Goodbye zu sagen, until next time! An dieser Stelle herzlichen Dank an die Büchis für dieses gelungene Fest.

1924 was a significant year for the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz. At that time, the Games Master, Mr. Gordon Spencer, had the unique opportunity to build three Fives courts at the school. A hundred years later, Fives is still an essential part of the sports offerings at the Lyceum.
In the 1950s, Spencer maintained a close friendship with the Old Citizens School from London, a friendship that still exists today, thanks to the great commitment of the Büchi family. For this reason, the Old Citizens were warmly invited to participate in the 100-year celebration. Also present at the celebration were the Fives Club from Geneva and the Fives Club from Zurich. Renato Büchi, the Fives Keeper of the Zuoz Club Zurich, took on the entire organization for this special occasion.
The English guests arrived in Zurich on Friday morning. Some Old Citizens were met at the airport by Old Boys, and together they made their way to Zuoz. Upon arrival at the Lyceum, there was a small warm-up session in the Fives courts to welcome them. Then everyone went to their hotels to prepare for dinner.
In the heart of Zuoz, at the Crusch Alva hotel, they were warmly welcomed with a small aperitif. In the large hall, there was a three-course menu, and the atmosphere was lively and cheerful. After the main course, Renato Büchi stood up and opened the festivities. He greeted everyone and explained the somewhat complicated game variant for the tournament. Even though some attendees seemed a bit confused after his explanations, they were confident that the game variant would make sense. After dessert, people didn't stay up late, as they wanted to be fit for the tournament the next day.
Saturday started well, with everyone arriving punctually for first instructions and the group photo at the Rondell. Rain was forecasted, and the players who were allowed to play in the covered courts did not complain. In the upper courts without a roof, it was perhaps a bit too wet, but the participants' enthusiasm for the game remained unbroken throughout the tournament.
Saturday evening was rounded off with a delicious dinner at Dorta and stirring speeches that contributed to the festive atmosphere. During the event, the Zuozers were honoured with a silver plate, a generous gift from the Old Citizens. Additionally, Matt Chinery from the Eton Fives Association gave a speech and presented the school with a beautiful painting of the upper Fives courts at the Lyceum.
On Sunday it was time for the final matches. The best 24 players competed hard but fairly for the Engadin Challenge Cup, while the next 24 players competed for the Queen's Cup. After several intense and closely contested matches, Auryn and Jason emerged as the winners of the Queen's Cup.
Renato Büchi and his partner Alex Constantine, also an Old Boy, had an impressive run in the tournament on Sunday and quickly reached the decisive final of the Engadin Challenge Cup. Abs Bhattacharya (Old Citizen) and Alexander Heuberger had much more difficulty staying in the tournament. In the quarter-finals they were challenged by the student Kai Büchi and Old Citizen Alex Abrahams in a close match that they only narrowly won. The semi-final was anything but smooth, with Peter Süess and his partner Aroop largely controlling the game. At 10:9, Abs and Heubi pulled themselves together and won the match. Renato and Alex were already waiting for them. The energy reserves seemed depleted, as Renato and Alex dominated the exhausted players. The score was soon 8:1, and there was nothing more to be done. Büchi and Alex deservedly won the final with a high lead of 12:3. Congratulations were in order for their success.
To celebrate 100 years of Eton Fives at the Lyceum, the Zuoz Club sponsored a special trophy to honour the person who best embodied the Spirit of Fives during the tournament. This award was given to a player who not only regularly plays Fives and showed significant improvement during the tournament, but also consistently demonstrated exemplary fairness. This year's deserving recipient of the trophy is Auryn, a student at the Lyceum.
The celebration concluded with a cozy lunch on A.I. After the awards ceremony, it was time to say goodbye, until next time! A heartfelt thank you to the Büchis for this successful event.

BÜNDNER MITTELSCHULMEISTERSCHAFT WINTERGAMES, ST. MORITZ UND SAMEDAN
Der Tag war von schönem Wetter und guten Schneebedingungen geprägt.
Zwei hoch motivierte Teams nahmen teil: ein alpines Team, das am Morgen in Corviglia einen Wettkampf bestritt, und ein Team nordischer Disziplinen, das am Nachmittag in Samedan antrat. Es wurden gute individuelle Leistungen erbracht, allerdings war die Konkurrenz der anderen vier Schulen erheblich. Die Mädchen erreichten im Slalom den vierten Platz, die Jungen den fünften.
Die Langläufer zeigten am Nachmittag ihr Bestes, dennoch reichten die erzielten Ergebnisse nicht aus, um den Rückstand vom Morgen aufzuholen. Am Ende belegten die Jungen und die Mädchen jeweils den fünften Platz. Trotz der unerwarteten Platzierungen wird das Ereignis allen als ein besonderes Erlebnis in Erinnerung bleiben.
BMM-UNIHOCKEY
6. Platz für Jungs
Unverändert fand die BMM-Unihockey in Zuoz in unserer Dreifachhalle im Februar statt. Die Gegner sind stets stark und überlegen, was unser Unihockey-Team zumindest am Anfang nicht beeindruckte. Mit einem starken, sich abwechselnden asiatischen Duo im Tor (Kevin Li und Xu Sanqiang), konnte das LAZ-Team mithalten. Zuletzt schafften sie es nicht, die schnellen Pässe und starken Schüsse zu verhindern. Trotz ungemein guter Spielübersicht und sensationellem Teamgeist erlangten die Jungs den 6. Platz.
SMM EIS HOCKEY
4. Platz für Jungs
Dieses Jahr reiste unser Eishockeyteam für die SMM schon einen Tag vorher nach St. Gallen. Die Übernachtung verlief reibungslos und die Jungs hatten Zeit, sich mental auf die Spiele vorzubereiten. Es herrschte ein guter Teamspirit und die Lust, aufs Eis zu gehen, war riesig. Die ersten beiden Spiele liefen nicht wie erwartet, aber mit viel Einsatz und Teamarbeit erreichten die Jungs den 4. Platz.
The boys and girls volleyball teams played in their annual BMM in Davos and competed exceptionally well in close matches. The girls volleyball team narrowly missed out, losing a match by one point, and finished 3rd in the final standings. Whilst the boys, who were missing some key players, demonstrated their athleticism to test the other schools, but were unable to win some of their close matches and finished 5th overall.
In February, a group of 11 students from the Lyceum had the opportunity to travel to Lausanne for the annual “SGIS Badminton Tournament”! It was great to see 12 schools from all over Switzerland making the journey to take part in the tournament. The standard was extremely competitive, which made it an exciting event to watch!
In the boys' category, all the boys did well, making it to the latter stages of the tournament. They were unlucky to be beaten by the eventual winner and runner-up, but they played their hearts out and gave it their all. The girls were amazing! They totally dominated the competition, and the final was an all-LAZ affair. I'm happy to say that Linda took home first place, with Jocelyn taking the runner-up spot!
All students can be immensely proud in not only their conduct on the court but also off it and I received many comments congratulating our students for their sportsmanship and behaviour throughout.

Rückblick Februar – Juni 24
Mit Stolz blicken wir auf eine aussergewöhnliche Spielzeit zurück. Sowohl das öffentliche Theaterprogramm als auch unsere Schultheaterproduktionen fanden grossen Anklang beim Publikum und in der Presse. Mit «richtig viel Talent» (Fadrina Hofmann, «Engadiner Post» im Artikel über «New World», 1.6.24) überzeugten unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler in den diversen Produktionen und brachten die Zuschauenden immer wieder zu stehenden Ovationen. Und dank des beherzten Engagements von Milena Pavlovic konnten wir auch dieses Jahr die wunderbare Zusammenarbeit mit der Musikabteilung fortführen und somit das Erbe unseres zu früh verstorbenen Freundes und Musiklehrers Franco Tavernini auf gewohnt hohem Niveau weiterführen.
Herzlichen Dank an alle, die mit viel Herzblut, Zeit und Ideen die Entstehung unserer Projekte möglich machten. Dank eures Engagements entstand weit mehr als Theater. Und, unabhängig ob Schülerin, Schüler oder Lehrperson, arbeiteten wir als Team und haben wunderbare Theatererlebnisse ermöglicht.
ROMANA GANZONI & CURDIN NICOLAY –18. FEBRUAR 2024
Zum ersten Mal teilten sich im Februar die bekannte Engadiner Autorin und der beliebte Engadiner Liedermacher im Februar die Bühne des Zuoz Globe. Gemeinsam nahmen sie uns mit auf eine wunderbare Reise voller Geschichten und Lieder und erzählten vom Leben und dem Engadin.
MARTINA LINN – 9. MÄRZ 2024
Martina Linn spielte Anfang März gemeinsam mit Sam Baur und Rob Aeberhard ihr neuestes Programm. Die talentierten Musikerinnen und Musiker beeindruckten mit ihren vielschichtigen Kompositionen.
ENGLISH THEATRE COMPANY – MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS – 23.—25. MÄRZ
Nachdem zu Jahresbeginn die Shakespeare Company mit ihrer Produktion «Hamlet» begeistert hatte, widmetet sich die English Theatre Company des Lyceum Alpinum im März einem absoluten Klassiker von Agatha Christie. Der berühmte Detektiv Hercule Poirot wurde einmal mehr in einen mysteriösen Mordfall verwickelt, der ihn an seine Grenzen brachte und sogar an seinen Idealen zweifeln liess. Im minimalistischen Bühnenbild, aber in atemberaubenden Kostümen von Briony Langmead entführte uns die spielfreudige Schauspielgruppe in den Orient-Express und fesselte uns mit einem unterhaltsamen Murder-Mystery-Spiel.
HIOB – 11. APRIL 2024
Mit seiner erfolgreichen Produktion «Hiob» war im April der Schauspieler Jaap Achterberg zu Gast im Zuoz Globe. Nach dem Roman von Joseph Roth erzählte er die ergreifende Geschichte des mausarmen Lehrers Mendel Singer. Musikalisch wurde er vom Klarinettisten Franco Mettler begleitet.
NEW WORLD – 1./2. JUNI 2024
Als dritte und letzte Schultheaterproduktion zeigten Schülerinnen und Schüler des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz unter der künstlerischen und musikalischen Leitung von Ivo Bärtsch und Milena Pavlovic ein szenisches Konzert. Nadine Hosang, unsere ehemalige Schülerin und langjähriges Mitglied der Shakespeare Company, hat für die letzte Schultheaterproduktion dieser Spielzeit einen bemerkenswerten Text über die Zukunft geschrieben. Mit Ironie und Tiefgang mäandert ihre Erzählung zwischen Utopie und Dystopie und zeigt uns, worauf es auch in Zukunft ankommt: Menschlichkeit und den Glauben, dass wir etwas bewirken können.
PREMI TRAVERS ZUOZ – 15. JUNI 2024
Mit dem zweiten «premi travers zuoz» verleiht die Uniun Travers Asa Hendry einen Werkauftrag für ein neues rätoromanisches Theaterstück. Der Preis wird von der Lia Rumantscha und der Gemeinde Zuoz offeriert. Das Zuoz Globe/Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz koproduziert das neue Theaterstück, welches am 19. September 2025 im Zuoz Globe uraufgeführt wird.
Dieses Wochenende führen Schülerinnen und Schüler des Lyceum
Alpinum Zuoz das Stück «New World» auf. Ein Besuch bei einer der letzten Proben zeigt: Diese jungen Leute haben viel Talent.
Wir schreiben das Jahr 2040, Mitteleuropa hat sich eingemauert und die Schweiz wird seit dem Ende des Dritten Weltkriegs von der KI Helvetia regiert. Alles ist geregelt, sicher und steril. Europa lebt in völliger Isolation von allen Einflüssen, die sich negativ auf die Lebensbedingungen der Menschen auswirken könnten. Alle scheinen glücklich zu sein. Die ausserhalb der Mauer wissen nicht, wie es denen innerhalb der Mauer geht.
Doch eines Tages erhält ein unbedeutender Postbote einen Brief – einen handgeschriebenen Brief, der von einer Brieftaube in einer Welt voller Drohnen zugestellt wird. Zefira hat den Brief unterschrieben, und er kommt von ausserhalb der Mauer. Er ist an Arthur adressiert, der eigentlich ein ruhiges, zufriedenes Leben führt. Doch dann beginnt er, sich Sorgen zu machen. Er schreibt zurück. «Und mit jedem Wort, das er zu Papier bringt, schreibt er einen Teil seiner Geschichte um, ohne auch nur im Geringsten zu ahnen, welche bösen Folgen seine freundlichen Worte haben könnten», sagt der Erzähler.
BEMERKENSWERTE LEISTUNG
«New World» heisst das Stück, das die ehemalige Schülerin des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, Nadine Hosang, eigens für die letzte Schultheaterproduktion dieser Saison geschrieben hat. Es ist eine bemerkenswerte Geschichte, die alle Elemente guter Unterhaltung enthält: eine dramatische Struktur, eine originelle Geschichte, Humor, Tiefgang, Gesellschaftskritik und einen Schluss, der das Publikum zum Nachdenken anregt.
Das Stück ist als szenisches Konzert mit einer Lesung angekündigt. Auch die Leistung des jungen Ensembles ist bemerkenswert. Der Erzähler, Valentin Wassermann, begleitet das Publikum mit einnehmender Stimme durch die Geschichte. Taisia Zhiteneva spielt die Figur der Zefira mit einer Eindringlichkeit, die Gänsehaut auslöst. Tassilo Testa scheint nicht nur Arthur zu spielen, er ist der scheinbar harmlose Postbote, der sich am Ende als Held entpuppt. Lina Salzgeber als Helvetia meistert ihre Rolle als Verkörperung der künstlichen Intelligenz so souverän, dass es fast unheimlich
wirkt. Und Giulia Pietrogiovanna überzeugt als Nachrichtensprecherin der Zukunft.
MISCHUNG AUS DRAMA UND MUSIK
Ein wesentlicher Teil der Atmosphäre während der Aufführung wird durch die Musik geprägt. Die 15-köpfige Band spielt und singt bekannte Lieder wie «Here Comes the Sun», «La vie en rose» und «Mad World» live. Die musikalischen Effekte werden gezielt eingesetzt und haben die gewünschte Wirkung – sie lösen Emotionen beim Publikum aus. Die musikalische Leitung hat Milena Pavlovic, gecoacht werden die beiden Sängerinnen von Nadia Braito.
Die Idee und das Konzept für «New World» stammen von Regisseur Ivo Bärtsch. «Wir präsentieren eine Mischung aus Theater, Lesungen und Musik, um die Geschichte auf verschiedenen Ebenen zu erzählen», erklärt er. Auf der einen Seite wird das Publikum über die Figuren und ihre Gedanken informiert, auf der anderen Seite führt der Gesang die Geschichte weiter oder sorgt für Verschnaufpausen.
«DIE VIBES SIND DA»
Die Aufführung ist hauptsächlich auf Deutsch, einzelne Teile sind auf Englisch. Die die Mitglieder der Theatergruppe auf der Bühne sind zwischen 12 und 18 Jahren alt. «Theater mit Musik zu spielen, ist toll und auch motivierend», sagt Lina Salzgeber aus S-chanf, alias Helvetia. Ihr gefällt auch die Botschaft des Stücks: der Glaube, dass jeder und jede von uns etwas bewirken kann. Simo Bärtsch ist der Leadsänger. Er hat bereits in früheren Produktionen gesungen und geschauspielert. «Die Kombination von Musik und Schauspiel gefällt mir sehr», sagt er. Und auch für das Stück ist der junge Sänger voll des Lobes: «Die Texte sind toll, die Musik ist toll, die Stimmung ist da.»
Auch die 20-jährige Autorin Nadine Hosang war während ihrer Schulzeit in Zuoz Mitglied der Shakespeare Company. Zurzeit macht sie ein Zwischenjahr, in dem sie in einer sozialen Organisation arbeitet. Demnächst wird sie ihr Physikstudium beginnen. Nadja Hosang kennt den Spielort Zuoz Globe und den Hintergrund der Schülerinnen und Schüler gut. Das mag ein Grund dafür sein, dass «New World» sofort
den Funken auf das Publikum überspringen lässt. Ein anderer Grund ist aber auch schlicht das Talent. Dass ein so junger Mensch ein so tiefgründiges Stück schreiben kann, das dank Ironie und überraschenden Einschüben nie trocken wirkt, ist beeindruckend.

We have many fervent individuals in the Zuoz Club, who want to push their own ideas, who want to be seen for what they accomplish and celebrate their victories.Yet we also have a strong spirit of sportsmanship and know that only when we perform together as one team the real magic happens!
Very much in this spirit we were able to form a new sports captain team that can rely on the talents of exceptional people. The spirited and strategic mind of Maximilian Welte helps us to set out goals and walk the talk. He has an extravert personality and is ready to be the front man of the team. I have observed the thorough attention to details and patient persistence of Christoph Semmelmann, which are great assets when it comes to setting up teams and coordinating the Games with the school; he is ready to act as vice sports captain.
In addition, we can rely on the great support of our new Chronicle Alexander Heuberger, who is a very dedicated Old Boy and a great relationship manager. He brings people together, on the playing field as well as in life. Also, our Vice President, Patrick Steger, who is often our tower of strength and a passionate defender of the Spirit of Zuoz, has coorganised the Winter and Summer Games for many years. He continues to strengthen the team with his expertise in sports and his experience in cooperating with the Lyceum.
With this great team we can look forward to many future successful Summer and Winter Games. So be sure to enjoy the Games again next time, I count on seeing you there!

Der Vorstand des Zuoz Club hat sich im Herbst letzten Jahres entschieden, seine diesjährige Vorstandssitzung in Dresden abzuhalten und sich neben den Pflichten auch auf das vielfältige Kulturangebot der Stadt einzulassen.
Neben Opernbesuch und Stadt konnten auch all die weltbekannten Museen in der Innenstadt besichtigt werden. Zur körperlichen Ertüchtigung konnten auch alle Cricket-begeisterten Zuoz-Club-Vorstände an einem Cricket-Spiel des ortsansässigen Cricket-Clubs RCD Rugby Cricket Dresden e.V. teilnehmen. Bei diesem Match hat auch unsere Präsidentin Nicole Kollars sowohl im Fielding als auch im Batting sehr erfolgreich mitgespielt und – so hoffen wir – in Dresden eine Karriere als Cricket-Spielerin gestartet.
Der austragende Cricket-Club und dessen Spieler haben sich sehr über das faire und vor allem auch sehr vergnügliche Match mit den Zuozern gefreut. Unsere Präsidentin Nicole Kollars dankte der gastgebenden Mannschaft mit einer kurzweiligen Rede und der Überreichung von sehr gelungenen Zuoz-Club-Pokalen. Ebenso haben die Old Boys den RCD Rugby Cricket Club zum Gegenbesuch nach Zuoz eingeladen.
Zu guter Letzt kam auch die Geselligkeit nicht zu kurz: Wir konnten zwei herrliche Abende bei sehr guter Stimmung und passendem Essen verbringen.
Für Dresden und die eher überschaubare Anzahl Mitglieder des Zuoz Clubs war dies das erste Mal, dass ein offizielles Zuoz-Club-Treffen in der Stadt stattgefunden hat, worüber sich die Dresdner Zuoz-Club-Mitglieder sehr gefreut haben.

In their 3rd appearance at Cricket on Ice, the mixed team between German Cricket Club and Zuoz Club won the prestigious tournament on the lake of St. Moritz.
Supported by our most favourite fan, Bob Felce and Rolf Zehnder, we were motivated as never before. Thank you for being there (it was even Bob’s birthday on Final’s day).
After a first convincing victory against St. Moritz CC, the GCC had to face last year’s champions Guards CC (guards of King Charles). It was a very close match which ended in a draw. Surprisingly, the Guards lost to St. Moritz, therefore the GCC was in the final against Old Cholmeleians CC from the UK. GCC won it convincingly.

Maturatreffen
Im Jahr 2009 trafen sich die Abschlussklassen 1969 nach 40 Jahren zum ersten Mal in Zuoz.
Wir kamen im Lyceum zusammen und wurden dort von der Schule zu einem Aperitif eingeladen. Es wurde ein Gruppenfoto vor dem Eingang aufgenommen. Damals waren wir noch eine grössere Gruppe. Leider sind einige von uns in der Zwischenzeit verstorben, nämlich Charly Hirschmann und Fred Pischl und die Lehrer Dr. Zingg und Dr. Hartmann. Anschliessend gingen wir zum gemeinsamen Nachtessen ins «Dorta».
10 Jahre später, also im Jahr 2019, organisierten Filippo und Valeria ein weiteres Treffen. Treffpunkt war die Crusch Alva, anschliessend führte uns unser Klassenkamerad Gian Marchet Zender durch das Dorf. Es gab einen kleinen Imbiss in der Crusch und am Nachmittag eine geführte Besichtigung des Lyceums. Das Nachtessen fand in der «Stüva Colani» statt. Der Chef Paolo verwöhnte uns mit einem fantastischen Gourmet Nachtessen.
In diesem Jahr dachte Valeria, es wäre wieder an der Zeit, ein gemeinsames Nachtessen zum Jubiläum «55 Jahre Matura» zu organisieren, da wir nicht jünger und fitter werden.
Die Einladung erfolgte anhand der Liste, die Valeria hatte. Leider waren einige der E-Mail-Adressen nicht mehr gültig, deshalb war es schwierig, alle zu erreichen. Einige haben sich entschuldigt und so waren wir schlussendlich nur neun Personen (mit Anhang zwölf). Es gab ein feines Nachtessen
in der Stüvetta der Crusch Alva. Es war aber ein sehr gemütlicher und intimer Abend, da die Gruppe klein war und man mit allen sprechen konnte. Es wurden viele Anekdoten über das Erlebte im Internat erzählt und viel gelacht.
Da uns die Zeit davonläuft – «carpe diem» – planen wir in zwei Jahren wieder ein Treffen. Wir wären dankbar, wenn die Leser und Leserinnen dieses Artikels ihre Kontaktdaten, die sie beim Zuoz Club hinterlegt haben, kontrollieren und aktualisieren würden.

Klassen-Treffen – Freitag 28. Juni 2024
Wir hatten bislang bereits drei Klassentreffen und zwar im Fünfjahres-Rhythmus. Am 23. September 2009 hat uns Andy Reinhart nach Winterthur eingeladen; 45 Jahre nach dem Lyceums-Abschluss. Zum Anlass 50 Jahre Matura/Abitur trafen wir uns am 4./5. September 2014 in Zuoz. Rektor Balz Müller informierte über die Entwicklung/Anpassung/ Modernisierung der Anlagen; Ursula Arn organisierte den Besuch des Bernasconi-Kellers und des Weinlagers des Hotel Waldhaus. Am 5. Juli 2019, 55 Jahre nach der Matura, haben wiederum Emerita und Ruedi vor den Summer Games zu einem Treffen eingeladen; wir waren zu elft dabei.
Nun trafen wir uns weitere 5 Jahre später zum 60-JahreMatura/Abitur-Jubiläum wiederum in Zuoz. Um 14 Uhr wurden wir auf dem Rondell von Herrn Martin Scherer (Finanzen & Dienste) empfangen; (Direktor Oliver Hartwright war abwesend). Frau Sabrina Casty (Marketing & Kommunikation) hat uns anschliessend durch den Zuoz Globe geführt und die Zweckbestimmung der Räumlichkeiten erläutert.
Bei einem Zvieri-Apero bekamen wir einen Briefumschlag; als Überraschung unerwartete Souvenirs, Zwischenberichte
aus dem Archiv und kritisch wohlwollende Qualifikationen. Zu mir war etwa auf den 14. Februar 1964 zu lesen: «Takt und feines Gefühl für menschliche Beziehungen lassen Bernard im Stillen viel Gutes im Internat wirken. (…) Im Latein hat er dank seinem Sprachgefühl Aussicht auf eine ausreichende Note zu bekommen, wenn es ihm endlich gelingt, die Lücken in seinen Grammatikkenntnissen zu stopfen. Eine ungünstige Prognose müssen wir dagegen für Mathematik stellen (…)». Direktor Alfred Nadig (Nuggel) meinte in einer privaten Auskunft hinsichtlich meiner militärischen Ambitionen: «(…) Ich zweifle nicht daran, dass er sich einsetzen wird, um sein Ziel Offizier zu werden erreichen wird, und ich bin überzeugt, dass er sowohl in Bezug auf Intelligenz als auch im Bezug auf Charakter (…) die notwendigen Voraussetzungen erfüllt».
Weiter gings auf die andere Innseite zu einer Führung durch das Kaffee-Museum Caferama, mit Betriebsbesichtigung der Familie Daniel Badilatti. Zur Einführung ein Informationsfilm zu Anbau und Ernte des Kaffees, mit anschliessenden Erläuterungen zu Rösterei und Produktion beim Aufenthalt vor einem Rohkaffeesilo.
Höhepunkt der Begegnung war das gemeinsame Abendessen in der Cruschetta im Hotel Crusch Alva, zwischen der Kirche, dem Planta-Haus und dem Klarer-Conda gelegen. Silva Huber, Gian und Erica Saratz sind dazugestossen. Da kam es zu stimmungsvollen Gesprächen; Austausch zu beruflichem und familiärem Werdegang des einen und anderen, ein Aufleben unvergesslicher Erinnerungen und Erlebnisse.
Ich will die Gelegenheit wahrnehmen, auch an dieser Stelle meiner persönlichen Verbundenheit mit Zuoz Ausdruck zu geben. Die Internatszeit am Lyceum gehört in der Tat zu meinen besten Erinnerungen. Ich habe gelernt, mich in einem geregelten Tagesablauf zurechtzufinden, mich auf begrenztem Raum mit Menschen verschiedener Herkunft und Erziehung zu vertragen – ein unschätzbarer Beitrag zur Vorbereitung auf das spätere Leben in der Gesellschaft.
Ruedi und Emerita danken wir alle, die wir in den Genuss eines schönen Programms gekommen sind. Auch Anna Bott – leider war sie verhindert – hat in Ihrer Funktion als Leiterin Marketing & Kommunikation mit der sorgfältigen Zusammenstellung überraschender Souvenirs aus dem Archiv massgeblich zur Vorbereitung dieses Treffens beigetragen.
Sich auf diese Art und Weise, in regelmässigen Zeitabständen, über die Jahre hinweg wiedergefunden zu haben, ist ein echtes Bedürfnis, will mir scheinen.
In diesem Sinne würde ich – so Gott will – auch zum 65-JahreMatura-Jubiläum am Lyceum wieder nach Zuoz kommen. Bis dahin uns allen die herzlichsten Glückwünsche.

Our summer dinners are very dear to my heart and always special!
It has become a tradition to have one member take the reins, throw open their doors during a private invitation and then show us their favourite local restaurant or bar. This way, we get to explore different corners of Berlin and discover what each of us loves about the city.
Marcus Feil was our gracious host this year, inviting us to his office on Kudamm for an after-work aperitif. With ice-cold drinks and a spread of tasty treats, we got so comfy that we ended up lingering much later than planned.
After a refreshing walk post-thunderstorm, we headed to Savignyplatz, where we enjoyed a lovely candlelit dinner, scrumptious food and fantastic conversation.

Treffen am 22. April 2023
Nachrichten aus dem hohen Norden wandern sehr langsam, die Elbe ist tief! Am 22. April 2023 gab es seit längerer Zeit wieder ein besonders fröhliches Treffen, das gleichzeitig eine Staffelstabübergabe war: Anna Ahrenkiehl hatte sich mehrere Jahre mit ihrer strahlenden Art um die Events der Zuozer im Norden gekümmert. Drei Kinder und ein Umzug nach Hannover machten es aber zusehends schwieriger für sie. Mit Begeisterung habe ich die Aufgabe des Regionalpräsidenten von ihr übernommen.
Das erste Treffen bei Quöllfrisch und Aigle organisierte ich bei uns zu Hause in Eppendorf. Es gab viele überraschende Wiedersehen über die Generationen verteilt. Patricia Kortüm brachte ihr Dreigespann mit, das mit unseren zwei Kindern nach Zuozer Manier Quatsch machte. Ausnahmsweise verteilte der alte Internatsleiter aber keine Verweise. Einige Zuozer mussten leider absagen: Julius Reith hat als junger Vater viel um die Ohren, Niko Ditting fuhr ein Autorennen, Michael Jahr konnte leider nicht teilnehmen und einige
waren ärgerlicherweise nicht im Verteiler, wie Viktoria Diezemann (geb. Feldtange). Wir bleiben auch im Norden dran bei der Digitalisierung unseres Clubs.
In diesem Jahr gibt es gleich doppelten Nachwuchs bei unseren Zuozern in Hamburg zu feiern: Im Namen des Zuoz Clubs gratuliere ich sehr herzlich Beatrice Werdin und ihrem Partner Gordian zur Geburt von Leo am 3. Juni sowie MarcPhilip Zimmermann und seiner Frau Milena zur Geburt von Martell Theodor am 4. März.
Ich plane, im Herbst einen Fondue-Abend zu organisieren, passend zum norddeutschen Wetter. Bitte meldet euch, wenn Ihr nach Hamburg und Umgebung zieht: Wir freuen uns auf euch!

We started the year with about 20 hungry souls in one of the best sushi places in Munich. Geisha Garden is known for its creations of special rolls and for the fumes appearing all over the platters. We exchanged latest news and gossip –got some insights into the world of medicine by Johanna and Nina, heard about Max’s plans to travel the world (starting in July) and got to know new members.
By coincidence, Timm was also having dinner with his family there, so, he is of course also on the list of participants.

The weather in spring was nowhere near reliable. It was a nightmare organizing anything outside. The Tennis Trophy had to be redirected to an indoor/outdoor facility. So instead of “Tivoli”, we played at Rothof. After all, we did play and organized some fun games. Unfortunately, Charly ripped some of his last remaining functional muscles right after 15 minutes. Anna and Nici played really well as a team, and Nici and Philipp had a nice singles battle. Lilo (9) also made her first appearance at an international tennis tournament (well done) and had the honour to present the awards.
The Zuoz Club Tennis trophy will be repeated in late summer.

As many of you may know, after almost 20 years of extraordinary service, Filippo Variola has decided to retire from his position as President of the Geneva Fives Club. His tenure has been marked by dedication, passion, and a tireless commitment to the sport. Under Filippo's leadership, our community has grown stronger, the Benny
Oei tournament has become more prestigious, and our players have reached new heights of excellence. We owe him a great debt of gratitude for his remarkable service.
With Filippo's retirement, we are at the cusp of a new chapter in our journey. It is with great pleasure and excitement that we announce Florian Gautier as the new Geneva Fives Club President. Florian brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and innovative ideas to the role. His vision for the future of our Club promises to build on Filippo's legacy and take our sport to even higher levels of success.
Please join us in thanking Filippo for his outstanding contributions and in welcoming Florian, as he steps into this important leadership position. The first semester of the year has been an enjoyable period for the Zuoz Club, filled with vibrant events that have strengthened our bonds and created lasting memories. Here is a look back at some of the highlights:
As winter reached its peak, our February lunch took place in the Pâquis district at a charming Italian restaurant, thanks to Alex De Senger.
One of the standout events was the traditional spaghetti alle vongole night, hosted at Filippo's. Held at his beautiful home, this event celebrated the flavours of the sea in a warm and intimate setting. The evening was not just about the food, but also about the camaraderie and shared appreciation for fine dining.
A delightful lunch at the Geneva Club Nautique was organized thanks to Florian. Situated by the serene waters, this venue provided the perfect backdrop for our gathering.
As we look forward to the rest of the year, we anticipate many more exciting events and activities that will continue to bring us together.

In 2012 the Zuoz Club International was invited to London by Roger Wolf for its annual meeting. Roger was President of the Zuoz Club UK for a very long period, and together with Ina he used to organize regular meetings in London. Their generosity and refinement are still vivid in our minds.
That year the gala dinner took place at the very traditional and exclusive Lansdowne Club and the gentlemen were matched by the ladies giving a red rose to their partners. An original and elegant way to get everyone to mix and to create a good atmosphere.
Roger used to invite us, whenever we were in London, to play Fives with the members of the Eton Fives Association and for drinks in fashionable places. We miss him very much. He was a real gentleman and a faithful Old Boy.

In 2009 we were very busy in the Regionalgruppe Suisse Romandie: The Zuoz Club International meeting took place in Lausanne, with a Lavaux tour (Unesco World Heritage Site), we played our annual Geneva Fives Tournament, and Benny Oei was still with us, as you can see in the photograph.
Now our event is called The Benny Oei Fives Tournament in his memory.
But the activities did not take place only in our own region. There was also a trip to Rome, organized by Valeria Maybud, where Pope Benedict XVI mentioned the Zuoz Club in his speech on Sunday morning at St Peter’s Square! We were very honoured. The previous day we were welcomed at Villa Aurora by the Zuoz Old Boy Prince Nicolò BoncompagniLudovisi and the Spirit of Zuoz was very present that evening.

The weather wasn’t cooperating this time, so we stayed inside. The restaurant had welcomed our group on its patio already a few times before. Excellent service, a nice variety of food and drinks as well as flexibility, much needed with our group of free spirits! We had a few newcomers (welcome!) but also many from our “core” group! Thanks for being so loyal! Much appreciation again to Marcelo Sachs for his local support in New York. Several attendees came from Boston, but a special salute goes to two guests from afar: Francesco Ceccato, travelling from Dublin, and his daughter Aurora, who lives in GB, had a father-daughter outing in NYC for a special concert and for our event. Robert Sarasin came from Berlin. He was a very loyal participant at our East Coast events when he studied here.
A special thank you to all of you for bringing cash which made splitting the bill so much easier.

Nachdem wir erfahren haben, dass Johanna den Vorstand unseres regionalen Zuoz Clubs SWD aufgibt, möchten wir uns bei der kommenden Wahl am 19. April 2024 gemeinsam für die Nachfolge bewerben.
Wer wir sind:
MAXIMILIAN LOHR
Ursprünglich aus Frankfurt am Main, war Max von 2002 bis 2004 am Lyceum und schloss mit dem International Baccalaureate ab. Nach unterschiedlichen Stationen im In- und Ausland lebt er wieder in Frankfurt am Main, wo er in der Immobilienbranche arbeitet. Er hat beste Erinnerungen an seine Zeit im Lyceum und fühlt sich im Engadin weiterhin heimisch. Auch er zählt noch heute viele Zuozer zu seinen besten Freunden und empfindet eine tiefe Verbundenheit mit dem Lyceum.
YORK SCHWERTSCHLAG
Ursprünglich aus Stuttgart, war York von 2002 bis 2003 am Lyceum, wo er mit dem Abitur abschloss. Nach einem zweijährigen Aufenthalt in Luxembourg lebt er nun seit über 10 Jahren im Raum Frankfurt am Main. Aktuell arbeitet York bei einer Förderbank im Bereich Venture Tech Growth Financing. Auch ihn hat die Zeit im Lyceum sehr geprägt und er empfindet immer noch grosse Verbundenheit mit dem Lyceum und dem Zuoz Club.
Max und York kennen sich bereits aus der Zeit am Lyceum und sind bis heute gute Freunde.
UNSERE ZIELE:
Wir möchten den Mitgliedern des Zuoz Clubs allgemein, aber vor allem den Mitgliedern der Regionalgruppe SWD, die Chance geben, sich mehrmals im Jahr zu treffen, sich auszutauschen und auch neue Bekanntschaften zu schliessen. Uns ist sehr daran gelegen, die Verbundenheit zum Lyceum und zu den Ehemaligen, zu Zuoz und zum Engadin aufrechtzuerhalten.
Wir möchten Young Girls und Old Boys zusammenbringen; nicht nur in Form des traditionellen Gänseessens und des fast schon vergessenen Spargelessens, sondern auch im Rahmen von neuen Events. Warum sich immer zu einem reinen Essen treffen? Wir denken da zum Beispiel an AfterWork-Drinks. Wir könnten uns auch mal zusammen ein Weingut anschauen oder an einem Kochkurs teilnehmen. Vielleicht kann uns auch Johanna bei einem ausgewählten Event beim Rheingau Gourmet & Wein Festival einen Tisch für den Zuoz Club reservieren.
Wir möchten Mitglieder über den Vorstand hinaus stärker bei der Planung und Gestaltung von Events einbinden. Ein Ziel ist ebenfalls, die Kommunikation innerhalb der Regionalgruppe zu vereinfachen und auch spontane Treffen zu organisieren. Der erste sinnvolle Schritt dazu wäre eine WhatsApp-Gruppe.
Wir hoffen auf zahlreiches Erscheinen im Wirtshaus am Hühnermarkt und freuen uns über eure Stimme.

After quite a long absence, the Zuoz Club SWD met again in order to elect a new board.
On Friday, April 19th, the meeting and dinner took place at the “Wirtshaus Hühnermarkt” in the middle of Frankfurt.
After more than five years as president of the RG SWD Johanna Ullrich (AK 07) was delighted to hand over responsibility to Max Lohr (AK 04) and York Schwertschlag (AK 03).
New ideas, such as a SWD WhatsApp group for spontaneous meetings or organizing events outside the Rhine-Main area with the help of other SWD members, were met with applause and anticipation from all involved.
Of course, the traditional events of the regional group (Spargel- and Gänseessen) will also take place regularly again. Some of the members were attending again for the first time in a while and the atmosphere was so relaxed and fun that they promised to join regularly.
Some of the participants came all the way from Heidelberg and Heilbronn, especially for this evening. A few of the hard core went on to have a drink at Frieda’s Bar & Kitchen in the Omnitower, one of Frankfurt’s many skyscrapers.
We are all very much looking forward to many more events to come and wish Max and York all the best for their future endeavors.

Am 19. Juni kamen rund 30 Zuozerinnen und Zuozer zu unserem ersten Stammtisch in der «Fischerstube» in Zürich zusammen.
Es war alles angerichtet. Die leckeren Apéro-Häppchen, der feine Rosé zum Anstossen, und im Hintergrund lief das Fussballspiel Deutschland vs. Ungarn.
Es wurde draussen auf der Terrasse viel diskutiert und auch philosophiert, die Zuozer mal wieder ganz unter sich. Viele alte Gesichter waren uns wohlbekannt, doch da waren auch neue Gesichter, die sich das erste Mal bei einem Zuoz-ClubAnlass der Regionalgruppe Zürich blicken liessen. Schön, dass ihr da wart, macht ruhig ein wenig Werbung für uns!
Ein kleines Buffet mit diversen Speisen wie Ziegenkäse im Teig, Salatbouquet, Hummus und Salami wurde dann auch noch eröffnet. Wir wurden von der «Fischerstube» und ihrem Kellner Tim sehr fürsorglich verwöhnt. Nur mit dem Spiel Schweiz gegen Schottland wollte es nicht ganz klappen. Der
Ton war zwar da, doch Bilder gab es keine mehr. Nun, das trübte die Stimmung keineswegs, die Zuozer waren sowieso zu sehr mit ihren eigenen Storys und Erzählungen beschäftigt.
Nach 23.00 Uhr waren noch diverse Gäste da, die Bäuche waren vollgeschlagen und man genoss die abendliche Atmosphäre.
So um Mitternacht herum verliessen die Letzten das «Fischerstübli». Es war ein sehr entspannter und fröhlicher Anlass gewesen. Herzlichen Dank für euer Kommen, wir hoffen sehr, euch beim nächsten Event wieder begrüssen zu dürfen!

Carl Leo Zapp starb am 27.12.2023 in Düsseldorf. Er war Rechtsritter des Johanniterordens und wurde im gräflich Speeschen Ruheweld beerdigt. Er war ein tief religiöser Mensch und Tierretter.
Nach dem Abitur in Zuoz studierte er Jura in Bonn. Weitere Studien folgten an der Sorbonne in Paris. Ein amüsantes Erlebnis dort: Auf dem Weg in die Oper im Smoking geriet er in eine Demonstration und wurde mit der Masse verhaftet. Durch die Zeit im Sportinternat in Zuoz wurde er zum Spitzensportler in den Disziplinen Schwimmen und Abfahrtski, was von der österreichischen Nationalmannschaft ungläubig kommentiert wurde. Beim Cricket stand er immer im Tor und bekam Schüsse gegen den Kopf.
Mit Naturkundlern und seiner Mutter unternahm er eine Expedition zu den indigenen Stämmen im Amazonas – einige davon noch Kannibalen.
Nach dem Studium fing er bei der amerikanischen Firm Grey in Düsseldorf an. Als Sohn eines Botschafters gehörte alles, was mit Politik zu tun hatte, zu seinen Aufgaben. Sowohl die Landes- wie die Bundesregierung waren seine Kunden. Viele Jahre lang war er der Berater von Aussenminister Genscher. Wenn er gesucht wurde hiess es: «Wo ist die Abteilung für feines Benehmen?»
Für die Landesregierung NRW machte er vierundzwanzig Filme über Verkehrssicherheit. Sie waren sehr witzig und wurden oft im Fernsehen gesendet. «Herz ist Trumpf» war seine Erfindung.
Seine Intelligenz war unglaublich. Die Eintrittsprüfung ins Internat in Zuoz musste dreimal mit neuen Texten wiederholt werden, da er Texte – ohne sie vorher jemals gesehen zu haben – Wort für Wort wiedergab.
Symphonien der grossen Meister erkannte er auf Anhieb.
Mit der Familie Krupp in der Villa Hügel in Essen verband ihn eine tiefe Freundschaft durch die gemeinsame Zeit im Internat in Zuoz. Diese Familie war ihm besonders dankbar dafür, dass es einem Bekannten seiner finnischen Ehefrau gelang, Harald von Bohlen und Halbach aus russischer Kriegsgefangenschaft freizubekommen. Die Russen wollten ein Exempel an einem Kapitalisten statuieren und verdonnerten ihn zu Einzelhaft. Nach zehn Jahren gelang es dem finnischen Grafen Munck af Fulkila, Harald von Bohlen und Halbach freizubekommen, dank adeliger Verbindungen aus der Zarenzeit. Harald erzählte uns, dass er in seiner Einsamkeit vieles aus der Bibel plötzlich auswendig konnte. Er hatte nur überlebt,
weil eine russische Ärztin ihm Brennesseln zu essen gegeben hatte. Da Haralds Ehefrau Doerte ebenfalls Tierretterin war, wie Carl Leos Ehefrau Birgitta, hatte man vieles gemeinsam. Es kamen viele Einladungen zu grossen Festen in der Villa Hügel.
Carl Leo hatte viele Verwandte in der Bewegung des 21. Juli, im Widerstand gegen Hitler. Unter anderem wurde Graf von Schwerin gefoltert und an einem Fleischerhaken aufgehängt. Sein Vater war auch im Widerstand und schickte einen Juden nach dem anderen in die Türkei als Personal. Er sollte einen Baum in Israel bekommen, aber er wollte keinen Dank. Seinem Sohn gab er einen jüdischen Vornamen, Leo. Den Dank erhielten dieser Leo und seine finnische Ehefrau, als sie 1971 am Schabbat, am Freitag, zum Abendessen eingeladen wurden. Finnland und Bulgarien waren die einzigen Länder, die sich weigerten, ihre Juden auszuliefern.

Als Vierzehnjähriger bin ich Heinz zum ersten Mal beim Cricket-Match in Zuoz auf dem A.I. begegnet. Er spielte für die Old Boys und ich für die Schüler. Heinz war der Batter und erzielte einen «Half Century» – 50 Runs – und die Schüler verloren hoch. Ich gratulierte Heinz zu seinem Sieg und seinem Batting und fügte hinzu: »Nächstes Jahr werden wir Schüler gewinnen!» Und so kam es auch. Im darauffolgenden Jahr gewannen wir Schüler. Nach dem Match kam Heinz auf mich zu und fragte: «Darfst du Bier trinken?» Ich erwiderte, dass mein Vater eher dagegen sei, aber meine Mutter es erlaube. Worauf Heinz sagte: «Also trinken wir auf deine Mutter!»
Heinz war ein grossartiger Sportler – Weltmeister im Bobrennen, begeisterter Eishockeyspieler, Skifahrer, Cricketspieler und vieles mehr. Er war ein Zuozer durch und durch. Im Zuoz Club war er Sportkoordinator und Zürcher Regionalgruppenpräsident.
Da er in der Bekleidungsindustrie tätig war, organisierte er einmal neue Trikots für die Eishockeymannschaft der Old Boys. Aus Versehen wurde der falsche Entwurf umgesetzt, und auf den Trikots stand statt «Mens Sana in Corpore Sano» «Mens Sana in Campari Soda»!
Als Zürcher Regionalgruppenpräsident organisierte er jedes Jahr anlässlich des Oktoberfestes ein Cricket-Match zusammen mit dem Alt-Zuoz-Club-Präsidenten Frank Ludwig. An einem solchen Anlass erlitt ich eine Nierenkolik und wurde nur dank des entschlossenen Handelns von Heinz im Krankenhaus richtig behandelt. Heinz war immer mit Leib und Seele für seine Freunde da und erwartete nie eine Gegenleistung.
Heinz lebte leidenschaftlich nach dem Motto «carpe diem». Er war ein hingebungsvoller Familienmensch und ein geschätzter Geschäftsmann. Er unterstützte als Schulratsmitglied (Verwaltungsrat) das Lyceum. Auch für das Wohl seiner Wohngemeinden Küsnacht und Meilen sowie später auch Zuoz hat er sich stets aktiv eingesetzt.
Heinz, it was a privilege and an honour to be part of your life and a true friend to you!
You were loved by many and will be missed a lot.

It took me a couple of months to digest the loss of my dear friend Peter and, benefitting from the calm of the period before New Year’s Day, to put these few words together for the Zuoz Zeitung.
Peter “Capo” Cadsky was born on 14.5.1946 and passed away on 28.8.2023 in Province. He is buried in Bolzano. He graduated in Zuoz in 1967. He was not even moderately interested in sports, except skiing and swimming. One year before his Matura we went on a longer car trip with three other Zuozers, during which they visited Anatolian Turkey and Syria and had a quick tour into Lebanon. After our Matura he travelled by VW with Old Boy André Naville. They visited Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and went further east.
We both went to study in St. Gallen in 1967, where we graduated in 1971. Peter married Gladys, with whom he was already living together in St. Gallen. Their honeymoon trip was on one of his father's banana ships sailing between Latin- and Central America and Europe. Peter then started to work in his father's company's Munich branch. He spent an important part of his professional life in the sector of global fresh fruit, covering in certain produce such as bananas, citrus and exotic fruits. He covered the whole value chain from growing (plantations in Africa, Centraland South America) to logistics and wholesale distribution within western Europe. His companies occupied at times a dominant position in the continental west european fresh fruit and vegetables sector.
I have never seen Peter in a bad mood, he was always smiling, always ready to help others. He loved skiing and swimming and was a big amateur of good food and wines, which I had multiple occasions to share with him. He was particularly fond of his Thai dog Robbi and together with some other Phuket based expats created and financed a stray dog rehabilitation center and clinic in Phuket (“Sui Dog”) which has become one of the biggest, if not the biggest one in Thailand. Peter was very interested in world politics, especially in countries he knew well such as Ukraine. I lost a bet to him in early 2022 that Russia would not invade Ukraine…
His passing away will leave in us a big void. But great past memories with Capo will outlive him for a long time.

Rodolfo Grossmann has passed away on December 16th 2023, after a long illness. He was part of the Zuoz Club board for many years and was very active in the Zurich Regional Group.
On the rare occasions when Rodolfo was not attending an event, we all noticed it and inquired about his well-being. He will remain present at each Club gathering and we will cherish memories of many joint journeys.
We will miss him greatly and think of him with gratitude for his unbroken support of the Club and his always cheerful and endearing personality.
We send Elli and his daughters our deepest sympathy.
Ulrich Gessner
Rodolfo ist nach sehr langer, schwerer Krankheit am 16. Dezember 2023 von uns gegangen. Lieber Rodolfo, die schönen Erinnerungen an das Erlebte mit dir werden uns immer an dich denken lassen.
Rodolfo war von 2010 bis 2018 als Vorstandsmitglied für den Zuoz Club aktiv. An den Aktivitäten und Festlichkeiten der Regionalgruppe Zürich nahm er fast immer teil, wenn dies sein Gesundheitszustand erlaubte.
Neben den zahlreichen Sportarten, welche er am Lyceum ausübte, hat er während seiner Schulzeit in Zuoz vor allem gerne Fives gespielt. Richtig aktiv wurde er dann in den Fives Courts im Geeren (Kanton Zürich). Viele Jahre hat er mit Benny Oei und anderen Old Boys und Young Girls voller Begeisterung zahlreiche Matches gespielt. Auch das Eisstockschiessen auf der Dolder-Eisbahn war ein beliebter Anlass für Rodolfo, an dem er zusammen mit seiner Gattin Elinor oft teilnahm. Er ging auch sehr gerne an die Summer Games und die Klassentreffen mit seinen Kameraden, von denen leider schon einige nicht mehr unter uns sind. Er liebte das jährliche Spargelessen in Lampertheim, und freute sich, die Zuozer aus der Region und auch von weit her wieder zu treffen.
Er war ein begeisterter Autoliebhaber und hat sogar einmal in Mugello 2012 an einem besonderen Autorennen teilgenommen, an dem er mit seinem Ferrari den ersten Platz errang.
Rodolfo, du weilst nicht mehr unter uns, wir vermissen dich sehr. Adieu.

Thomas Riecker ist am 27. Januar 2024 im Alter von 76 Jahren seiner Krebserkrankung erlegen. Er lebte zuletzt in der Nähe von Zug.
Thomas war von 1961 bis 1967 im Lyceum. Er stammte aus einer Schwarzwälder Uhrenfabrikanten-Familie, war aber ein Weltbürger, der sich in Europa wie auch in Kanada heimisch fühlte.
1988 war er als Sanierer der im Staatseigentum befindlichen, krisengebeutelten Berndorfer Metallwarenfabrik tätig und wurde zu einem führenden Gründungsmitglied der neuen Berndorf-Gruppe, die er 36 Jahre lang als konstruktiver und verantwortungsvoller Partner führte, bis er aus seinen Funktionen mit einer zufriedenen Bilanz ausscheiden konnte.
Das Traditionsunternehmen «Berndorf Besteck» zu sanieren, bezeichnete er als wichtige Entscheidung in seinem Leben.
Zum 100-jährigen Jubiläum des Lyceum Alpinum schenkte er grosszügig Berndorf-Bestecke, die als Dank an Mitwirkende geschenkt und bei der Tombola versteigert werden konnten.
Thomas war im Zuoz Club wesentlich mit seinen Klassenund Altersgenossen in Österreich und der Schweiz befreundet. Er war an der Zwischentagung in Brasilien dabei und kam gelegentlich an Veranstaltungen der Regionalgruppe Zürich.
Ex-Präsident Cyrus Maybud bezeichnete ihn als: «…a really good person! RIP Thomas»
Im Zuoz Club gilt unser tiefes Mitgefühl der Familie des Verstorbenen.
