So, what’s happening locally in January?

You did it Paris! You made it to the end of another calendar year, through another busy holiday season and to a brand new sparkling month. January is known for three things: newness, getting back into routines and the blues, and luckily, for us, there are many happenings you can count on for shaking things off and up locally.

Up Yoga had their grand opening in Paris on November 1st and have a nice new space on Dundas Street East that has been humming along since. They have a number of regular classes and services available and in January they have several special events on offer to give your body a boost and your spirit some space: a restorative sound-bath session on January 13th, a day long retreat on January 15th which includes gentle yoga, journaling, refreshments of all kinds and,

on January 27th, the chance to explore cold plunge with a Wim Hot method fundamentals workshop. All these events sound really accessible for different levels, good for supporting mental health and a great way to mix up the first month of 2024; more info can be found on www.upyoga.ca Downtown Paris, on the corner of Mechanic St and Broadway St W, is the new (ish) shoppe and creative space: Le Petit Marché, a “general store” which features handmade, antique, vintage and whimsical wares from local artists, craftspeople and entrepreneurs. In January they are launching a series of Thursday evening workshops facilitated by in-house businesses and Paris people, like: The Paris Apothecary owner and kitchen witch, Sarah Rusak, who will be

holding spirituality and skin, hair and body care spaces, artist and Bird & Bee Vintage owner, Emery Silva, who will be teaching craft and creative arts workshops and sewist and tailor, Prinx Lydia, who will be hosting monthly sewing clinics for people of all levels who want to ask questions, get help on their projects and skills, and meet other people who have a passion for stitching.

Each month there will be different themes for the Thursday programme: events, classes, community spaces and workshops of all kinds and they will all be donation based - “tip the teacher” style - with materials provided and just RSVP required.

Le Petit Marché has big plans with visiting teachers and events on other days too.

S P O RT S Ringette – invented in Canada and often referred to as the fastest sport on ice!

How much do you know about the sport? The Paris Ringette Association has the answers, and they invite you to come find out!

By Casandra Turnbull Did you know that Ringette is most popular in Canada and Finland, perhaps because it was a Canadian invention? Since its debut in 1963, Canadians have enjoyed this sport dubbed the fastest sport on ice.

If you’re not too familiar with this sport, you’re in luck because Paris Ringette Association has a strong program right here in town and they’re always accepting new participants.

“Every year, we try to advertise our sport as much as possible and hope to gain more and more participants through the Come Try Ringette event, as well as our Learn to Skate Program,” said Courtney Boehmer, Coaching and Sponsorship Coordinator as and Public Relations for the Paris Ringette Association (PRA).

This year the organization welcomed a few new players through the Come and Try event, always held in the summer ahead of a new season.

The one-time session gives people a chance to rent equipment and just come on the ice and learn the basics of the sport. PRA volunteers are on the ice to help one-on-one with newcomers. However, numbers

That’s why the PRA hopes it’s Learn to Skate program will introduce some new players to the sport and catch their interest. “We have always had a great turnout for this program,” said Nicole Kipp, who runs the program. Most parents/caregivers sign their child up just to learn how to skate and sometimes it really piques their interest, and they graduate to a Fun 2 team. “We as an association use this to introduce families to the sport and continue to grow our association,” she added.

Kipp explains that Learn to Skate program is fundamentals based and provides children the ability to move up based on skill and development (not necessarily age). “We do our best to get the kids skating independently. Once they accomplish this, we work on agility, balance, and skills through fun play. We play games and try to have our skill development be fun like jumping and spinning with hula hoops, sliding under pool noodles to encourage standing up independent once they fall, and kicking, throwing, and chasing balls for speed and balance.”

Titans end 2023 on a 3-game winning streak!

With a big home game win against Hespeler a couple weeks ago, one can say that the PJHL schedule makers were Grinches by scheduling the last two games before the Christmas break against the first place Woodstock Navy Vets and the second place New Hamburg Firebirds at the Brant Sports complex.

Against Woodstock, the Titans’ chances of making a two game winning streak (sorry it’s bad luck to say streak, but I checked and it’s okay to write it) were low.

However, to my surprise, the goal light glowed red like Rudolph’s nose with both teams scoring six goals each in regulation time.

So now it’s overtime, with Paris having a man advantage due to a late third period Navy Vet penalty, Thomas Lonsdale takes a pass from Seth Kirou and wins the game in front of over 700 Woodstock fans who all had lumps of coal to take home. Christian Campanelli earned the 1st star of the game and the 2nd star to Lonsdale for the overtime winner.

In a series of intense athletic encounters, the Panthers' senior and junior girls' volleyball teams faced formidable opponents, while the junior boys' basketball team showcased their skills. The senior boys' basketball team, however, encountered some challenges in their recent games. Let's delve into the details of these sporting events.

Senior Girls Volleyball: The senior girls' volleyball team demonstrated their dominance on December 14 when they clashed with Assumption College. The Panthers exhibited exceptional teamwork, swiftly defeating their opponents in three consecutive games, securing a resounding victory.

L O C A L H I S TO RY 75 Years Ago - Dances Proved Successful On New Year’s Eve 1948

PARIS - Three dances in Paris on New Year's Eve catered to those celebrants who wished to dance the old year out and the new year in.

Each was very well attended and enjoyable, and each had a large quota of balloons to release as the midnight hour struck. The Royal and Honorable Ancient Order of the Fleas, which order exists purely for the sponsoring of a New Year's Eve dance in Paris had a most successful party with dancing to Don Bethune's orchestra, and Walt Oldham as master of ceremonies.

Feature dances throughout the evening included the Paul Jones, the midnight dance, and the jitterbug contest. Mrs. Jack Pickell and D. A. Smith were the winners of the hidden lucky prize. A delicious buffet supper was served after midnight. Ronnie King's orchestra supplied the music for the Club 20 dance in the Municipal Hall, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with crepe paper and balloons. Paper hats and horns were distributed, and pandemonium broke loose at midnight in the time-honored custom. As an innovation for this dance, Club 20 had small tables

installed at which guests could sit, which met with the approval of the club members. A buffet supper was served after midnight. The Teen Town dance for members only at the Paris High School on New Year's Eve had a very good attendance with many from out of town. The gym was beautifully decorated with balloons and colored crepe paper and the dance concluded with the serving of a buffet supper. The mysterious Miss Teen and Mr. Town proved to be Edith Girard and Bob Grieves, whose identities were guessed by Douglas Wilson and Shirley Ford.

The spot dance was won by Jean Warring, dancing with Ken Moore, and the "blitzkrieg" by Barbara Whitbread and Geoffrey Duncan, The chaperons for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. L. Howey and Mr. and Mrs. Eric Walker.

L O C A L H I S TO RY 57 Years Ago - Rip-Roaring Hello to 1967 in Paris PARIS - The town of Paris was abuzz with final preparations for its highly anticipated New Year's Eve celebration, which included a massive bonfire and a centennial birthday party. The festivities took place in the picturesque municipal park located behind the Paris Arena, today known as the Syl Apps Community Centre.

Excitement filled the air as Thursday and Friday saw town trucks diligently collecting used Christmas trees, which would serve as fuel for the grand bonfire.

The collection of trees was meticulously organized, with trees from the areas north of the CNR tracks and the Flats being picked up on Thursday, while those south of the tracks and the Victoria Survey were scheduled for pickup on Friday. Jack Pickell, the chairman of the centennial committee, emphasized that the timing of tree removal was a matter of personal preference. He explained, "Many people like to keep their trees decorated until after the New Year. In any event, the firemen have plenty of fuel available to supplement the Christmas trees.“ The bonfire, supervised by the dedicated members of the Paris Volunteer Fire Department, was scheduled to be ignited at 11:30 p.m. The event kicked off with a brief address by Mayor Melvin Sharpe, setting the tone for the evening's program.

Approximately 1,500 people gathered at the centennial birthday party, with many visitors joining from neighboring Brantford. The centennial committee had a special surprise in store for the attendees—an impressive threetiered birthday cake. Ann Poland, the centennial queen, had the honour of cutting the cake, and she took the opportunity to explain the symbolic significance of the Canadian centennial emblem.

Comprised of 11 equal triangles, the emblem represented the 10 provinces and the Northwest Territories. Adding a touch of solemnity to the occasion, a member of the Paris Ministerial Association led the crowd in a prayer of dedication. Spirits were then lifted as the Paris Citizen's Band struck up the familiar tune of "O Canada," and the eager

attendees joined in singing the national anthem, welcoming the arrival of the New Year. At the stroke of midnight, the 56th Field Artillery commenced a spectacular 25-round salvo, marking the momentous occasion with a thunderous display. The entire town erupted with joy as sirens, factory whistles, and all of the Town’s bells resounded, echoing the jubilant spirit of the community.

Following the momentous display, a parade took place within the park grounds.

Each child was given a sparkler and a Canadian flag, symbolizing the unity and pride of the nation.

Led by the Paris Citizen's Band and accompanied by centennial officials, the children paraded around the park, their youthful enthusiasm lighting up the night.

**A rather new Canada Day tradition is picking up some steam. Ride with Fire organizers, along with a couple dozen ride participants (above), gathered at the Airport Fire Station in July, to present a $2,000 cheque to the Boots on the Ground organization. The money was raised during the second annual Ride with Fire cycling event that took place on July 1st. It was created by Brant Fire Captain Mark Stouffer in 2022. The century ride (100km) spans all eight County of Brant Fire Stations. **The Paris FC U16 Boys’ Team (pictured left) travelled to Kingston to participate in the Gaels Cup. The team was undefeated all weekend and won the Cup to claim gold medals.

A wide range of athletic prowess was on display in 19 different sports events featuring more than 1400 participants from a few dozen zone districts across the province.
