75 Years Ago - Dances Proved Successful On New Year’s Eve 1948
PARIS - Three dances in Paris on New Year's Eve catered to those celebrants who wished to dance the old year out and the new year in. Each was very well attended and enjoyable, and each had a large quota of balloons to release as the midnight hour struck The Royal and Honorable Ancient Order of the Fleas, which order exists purely for the sponsoring of a New Year's Eve dance in Paris had a most successful party with dancing to Don Bethune's orchestra, and Walt Oldham as master of ceremonies. Feature dances throughout the evening included the Paul Jones, the midnight dance, and the jitterbug contest. Mrs. Jack Pickell and D. A. Smith were the winners of the hidden lucky prize A delicious buffet supper was served after midnight. Ronnie King's orchestra supplied the music for the Club 20 dance in the Municipal Hall, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with crepe paper and balloons. Paper hats and horns were distributed, and pandemonium broke loose at midnight in the time-honored custom. As an innovation for this dance, Club 20 had small tables installed at which guests could sit, which met with the approval of the club members A buffet supper was served after midnight. The Teen Town dance for members only at the Paris High School on New Year's Eve had a very good attendance with many from out of town. The gym was beautifully decorated with balloons and colored crepe paper and the dance concluded with the serving of a buffet supper The mysterious Miss Teen and Mr Town proved to be Edith Girard and Bob Grieves, whose identities were guessed by Douglas Wilson and Shirley Ford. The spot dance was won by Jean Warring, dancing with Ken Moore, and the "blitzkrieg" by Barbara Whitbread and Geoffrey Duncan, The chaperons for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. L. Howey and Mr. and Mrs. Eric Walker.

Syd Clarkson had a well-deserved win at the Penmans mixed holiday jitney, when he took the first prize with the high single of 375, and in the previous game had bowled a 335. Winners were Syd Clarkson, Agnes Granton, J. Hutt, Jack Simon, Albert Glover, Bert Bray, Earl Newstead, Clarence Charlton, Gene Stratton, and L. Covert. A Quiet Day - the New Year's Day was very quiet in Paris, while adults recovered from the previous evening's jollity and the boys and girls took advantage of skating both afternoon and evening at the Paris Arena. The high winds and snow in the latter part of the day discouraged all but essential travel. At Home The pleasant annual event of the "At Home" on New Year's Day sponsored by the members of "C" Company of the 56th L.A.A., (the Duffs) was very successful. A large number attended to partake of the refreshments that were served from 10 a m until 2 pm and exchanged New Year's greetings
