PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Flynn Strategy: What is it?

Summer has always been our busiest time of the year and this summer has proved no different. While a full workload is a good thing, it can also cause problems if we don’t take the time to tackle it properly. Part of that process is developing a plan and sharing it with our team. Work is much easier when your entire team knows the plan and is pulling in the same direction. That it is why it is critical to our success that we all start consciously thinking about Flynn’s strategy.

Strategy can be broken down quite simply: where are we going, and how are we getting there? It doesn’t need to be more complicated than that. Just these two questions that we should ask before starting any task. The most important part is sharing our answers with our team and that is why I want to take this time to share Flynn’s strategy with everyone.

Strategy does not just belong in a high-level document discussed by senior staff. It is a process that we all take part in daily. It takes place during our handoff/kickoff meetings, when performing a FLRA, or when we attend a Flynn University course. Even just putting a CARE sticker on your hardhat means you are participating in our strategy.

The creation of the 4 P’s is our way of dividing our strategy into four buckets so it’s easier to understand. The 4 P’s are People, Performance Improvement, Profitable Growth, and Partnerships. Everything we do should be guided by these four important focus areas.

• People is straightforward. We are nothing without our people, that is why we are the “Flynn Family, Winning Together”. Safety and developing our people are also very important foundations in this bucket.

• Performance Improvement is the drive to always be improving. If we are not getting better, we are stagnating. That’s why our people’s ideas and Flynn initiatives such as the OPEX team are so important.

• Profitable Growth, but with an emphasis on profitable. Too many organizations grow for the sake of growth, with no clear vision in mind. Growing strategically results in new markets, new customers, and more opportunities for our people.

• Partnerships emphasizes the importance of our relationships both inside and outside of Flynn. Building productive and mutually beneficial relationships is critical to our success.

As I said at the start, strategy can be quite simple. Where are we going, and how are we getting there? These are the questions that we want to ask ourselves every day so we can approach our tasks strategically. While the 4 P’s can help guide our actions, it’s up to everyone at Flynn to keep them front of mind. If we take the time to ensure our actions support the 4 P’s, we can all be pulling in the same direction. With the entire team doing this, we will remain unstoppable!

As always, stay safe out there.

Doug

Flynn Boise Completes Glazing Project in Treasure Valley

Our Boise branch recently completed glazing work on the Pet IQ building.

The work consisted of storefronts, sunshades, smoke baffles and interior mirrors. This project marked one of the first glazing projects since our Boise branch joined the Flynn team. The project went well and marked a bright future for the branch becoming the preferred glazing contractor in the Treasure Valley.

Flynn Recognized as Employer of the Year in Southern Alberta

The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Board has recognized Flynn as employer of the year due to the hard work of the Calgary branch.

Mentorship and training are a key element of the Flynn Way and this recognition shows people are taking notice of Flynn’s dedication. To celebrate the award properly we asked for some photos of the Calgary field and office workers posing with the award.

“Flynn Canada has demonstrated a high degree of support and participation in Alberta's apprenticeship and industry training system, and provides an environment of training excellence that leads to success for its apprentices.” —J’Amey Bevan, Chair, Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board.

Cambridge Crews Chip Away at Work

Our crews are no strangers to harsh winters and January and February were quite unpleasant.

Frito-Lay needed alterations on one of their facilities and there is no one better to call on than Flynn. Our Cambridge team was happy to answer the call and were quick to get the work done.

Winnipeg Winters Mean Shoveling Roofs

Flynn Winnipeg finished up work on the Local 254, which consisted of an EPDM loose laid system at 296 SF.

Production was during the winter and a Winnipeg winter can be tough to those not used to it. But our Flynn crews have weathered worse, and they didn’t let the snow slow them down. In fact, the project consisted of two roofs, which just means more to shovel. But the work was completed on time and the sun came just in time for a picture.

CU Anschutz Health and Sciences Building Completed

This project was a multi-million-dollar cladding job with JE Dunn in Denver Colorado.

The project began in the Spring of 2021 and will be completed for 2022. Flynn ran an average of 8 men for most of the project, accumulating 13,000 field man hours and 1,000 shop hours.

The scope included 6,200 SF of Berridge flush panels, 30,500 SF of Flynn’s Accumet panels, 2,000 Rainscreen Series Panels and 2,400 SF of louver work. The exterior soffit of the project is where most of our ACM panel work was installed. This project not only was an outstanding performance by our Denver team members, but it allowed us to grow our partnerships within our market. We utilized relationships with TSC for the scanning services and Northern Facades for fabrication.

As the project ends, JE Dunn has been very pleased with our communication, responsiveness, and teamwork. Building strong relationships is key to Flynn thriving.

Thank you to the team: Matt Richardson, Jason Cordoza, Mahmood Alomar, Daniel Calderon, Cristobal Rosalez, Felix Lafevre, Tony Garcia, Jose Tenario Gomez, Luis Gonzalez, Edgar Arce and David Talamantes.

Work is Looking Great for Ottawa

Work in Ottawa is looking strong, which is why they submitted a large collection of the projects they are working on.

These projects include panel work on 5th and Bank which is a seven-storey residential building. A roofing service crew was sent to perform mechanical upgrades on the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Metals work on the Service and Inspection building and the train wash building for the Ottawa Light Rail Train. A hot rubber job in downtown Ottawa for the Charlotte which is a new condo residence. Last but not least, metals work on Westgate, the 24-storey residential building where they are applying Axiom panels.

And this is just a fraction of our work, which goes to show how busy our crews are at any time at Flynn.

Flynn Seattle Plays their Part in Changing the Skyline

Our Seattle team has been working on the 1001 Bellevue Office Towers for the past two years.

These office towers stand at 15 storeys each and offered a sizable challenge for our crews. The roofing scope comprised of 200 SF of SBS roofing per tower plus a green roof system installed over the SBS roof. Flynn Vancouver supported the metals side by supplying the ACM metals panels. The entire project was tricky at times due to the variety of trades working on site. But juggling competing priorities is to be expected on a larger project and the Flynn crew made out fine. These buildings are a fantastic addition to the skyline and Flynn Seattle played an important role in it.

10

Moncton Team Tackles

Largest Contract to Date

Production has recently begun on a new 2,228 SF distribution centre.

This TPO roof system includes three different sections with individual insulation requirements, as well as utilizing both adhered and mechanically fastened systems. A lot of the focus leading up to this project has been planning to ensure the scheduling requirements are met. At the same time, they need to work around weather and temperature limitations with the specified products. Its important to remember some products just don’t work in extreme weather. That’s why its imperative to be detailed oriented or small problems could quickly become large ones.

Regina Branch Reaches 10 Year Milestone Without a Lost Time Incident

As they round the corner past 1.5 million manhours, there are many new faces, new leadership, and new ideas at the branch.

The branch is part of an elite group of branches who have won the Don Flynn Safety Award twice (2013 & 2017). One thing that remains consistent in the branch is the culture of safety being everyone’s responsibility.

Final Frame Finished at 1 Yonge

One Yonge is a mixed condo tower standing at 65 storeys that needed the Flynn glazing team to install a collection of glazed and unitized panels.

The team completed nearly 100,000 SF of glazing work. Crew size ranged between six and 20 depending on the scale of the work that day. The interior walls and hallways were quite narrow which meant getting materials and manpower back and forth was difficult at times. But the final frame has now been placed and the crew posed for a shot to celebrate.

12

Sudbury Hard at Work on All Three Scopes

The Sudbury branch was hard at work on all three scopes through last winter.

The Health Sciences North Learners Centre required our metals team to apply Accumet panels. Our glazing team was busy with applying 9,015 SF of custom laminated glass to the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Each piece had a unique design which you can see in the picture below.

That left our roofing team hard at work on the Red Oak Senior’s project, but they at least got to take a break with a seasonal friend.

A Flynn Production Lands in the Guinness Book of World Records

The Flynn Toronto branch helped complete the full scope of work on the now world record holding pedestrian bridge east of the city.

The bridge was completed in September 2018 after a decade of planning, design, and construction. This bridge is the longest enclosed pedestrian bridge at 250 meters, and it spans 14 lanes of highway, six live rail tracks, and a two-lane municipal roadway. The bridge’s architecture is highlighted at night with close to 300 LED lights, giving its organic shape a soft glow in rotating shades of lilac, purple, blue, and teal. Flynn provided a full scope of work, plus engineering support. The bridge has previously been recognized with awards including the City of Pickering’s 2019 Urban Design Award and the 2019 Engineering News Record Global Best Projects Award in the tunnel/bridge category.

Strong Effort Starts Project Off on the Right Foot

The Victoria branch needed to assemble a well fitted crew for the out-of-town courthouse project in Port Alberni.

The crew was comprised of James, the shop foreman, Jeff and Ryan from the service team, Jack and Rey from Production Roofing and the office members Rob & Derek. Together they were ready to roll up their sleeves and meet the tight deadlines. The first phase of the work was to remove the ballast ahead of the scaffold company so the temporary roof cover could be in place the following week.

The project consisted of several logistical dominoes, so it was vital that everything was completed on time. The crew pulled together and managed to remove the 10,000 SF of gravel and insulation needed on time. They went that extra mile to ensure the project started off on the right foot and that’s incredibly important to its success.

Best of luck to Foreman Jesus Prieto Trejo and the roofing crew gearing up for the next phase of roofing works.

Decorative Glazing

Facade Will Complete the Nutrien Ag Project

Flynn Winnipeg was awarded and contracted to complete a full building envelope for the Nutrien Ag Project with BIRD Construction.

This building is a 100,000 SF warehouse and Flynn is installing 1,000 SF of TPO roofing, 44,500 SF of insulated foam panels, 5,700 SF of composite panels, and 7,860 SF of Aluminum curtain wall and glazing. This project was fast-tracked, which meant the crew worked diligently to meet scheduling needs. When completed the building will have a staggered pattern of decorative orange colored glass on every elevation that has curtain wall systems installed.

Tag Teaming on Safety

Through the direction of Branch Management and the eagerness of the Safety Department; site safety visits and inspections are done by a two-person team coming from both management and safety.

On March 8th, Peter Taylor (Safety Specialist) and Romy Tarrayo (Plant Manager) met in the Hunter at Lynn Creek site to do their planned and required inspections. This is manned by 32 of our metal experts tasked to install snap-lock as well as fiber cement panels. The visit started by checking in and going through covid protocols. As the duo walked the jobsite, the typical photos were taken – fire extinguishers, ladders, fall restraints, daily records, as well the crew’s field office storage.

The team continued their walk and while Romy passed a control zone, Peter stopped and surveyed the area. Peter started a discussion with Ray about expanding and extending the control zone because of the height of the work being performed as well as the roofline of the building. Romy agreed that the idea made sense and commented that he wouldn’t have even thought about that if he was alone in the inspection.

It was a solid decision that would make the site safer for our crews at work. The interaction is one example of a simple teachable moment – more eyes, more years of experience, better results.

The Flynn Vancouver Branch has a great way of keeping safety our number one priority.

Justin Clark Recognized as NRCA MVP

Justin Clark from the Kansas City branch has been recognized as a NRCA MVP for 2021.

The Roofing Alliance's Most Valuable Player Awards Program annually identifies and honours outstanding roofing workers. Justin Clark from the Kansas City branch has been recognized as a NRCA MVP for 2021. Justin is incredibly deserving of this recognition.

Justin Clark has a proven track record showcasing his work ethic, leadership, dedication to safety and his support for the people he works with. During his 12 years at Flynn, Justin has led multiple projects including his work at the Walmart distribution center. Additionally, he is part of the Joint Health & Safety Committee which was instrumental in his branch receiving the Don Flynn Safety Award back-to-back. Finally, he volunteered to become a Flynn Coach in our Coaching Program, which matches rookies

Justin has long been a proven leader in the field. During his time at Flynn, he was lead man on a 1.8 million square foot roofing project. This leadership role included the oversight of a 60-man crew with one third of those being new hires/apprentices. The production numbers peaked at 700 SF a day and averaged about 500 SF a day throughout. Justin also instituted an on "on-call duty” to ensure the integrity of the system and continued work through weather conditions, days, nights, and weekends. Overseeing a job of this size and achieving consistently impressive production numbers requires outstanding leadership and resourcefulness.

Perhaps his greatest contribution has been his involvement in the Flynn Coaching Program. Our Coaching Program matches experienced volunteers with our roofing rookies. Roofing culture can be hard on the younger generation attempting to break into the field. But it’s a lot easier if you have a coach to help guide you. As a coach Justin works directly with his rookies and provides them with mentoring and training. Justin conducts daily “huddles” where he answers questions and provides insight on their current tasks. He also monitors rookie progress with the coaching app which allows easy two-way feedback between him and his rookies. During his time as a coach Justin has trained five rookies.

The MVP award recognizes many exemplary traits. But the phrase goes “above and beyond” separates a nominee from the pack. Justin’s track record in leadership, work ethic and safety are what make him an outstanding member of Flynn and a clear choice as a nominee. But it his commitment to the Coaching Program that proves he goes “above and beyond”. Justin volunteered to join the Coaching Program so he could share his experience and skillset with the next generation. There are many outstanding roofers in our industry. But it is truly remarkable when they share what makes them outstanding to encourage more young roofers to join our trade. That is why Justin Clark was recognized as a MVP.

Weatherford College Marks Start of New Relationship

Weatherford College was our first job with Imperial Construction which meant it was really important we ace it.

Flynn Dallas-Fort Worth applied 2,300 SF of Accumet panels in charcoal, white and tan. It was a bit tricky to get the panels fabricated on time. Once our crews had the panels, they were able to finish the project quickly. The project has since been finished as you can see from the photo below and Imperial Construction was quite happy with the final result.

Transforming a Department to Adapt to Market Trends

Flynn Vancouver has two crews of highly skilled roofers that specialize in sloped roofing shingles, which makes it unique to Flynn.

John Paul Caguioa and Josh Ayao are the two senior foremen and John Temones is a junior foreman who is adapting quickly to smaller specialty projects as he gains experience. Under Ken Brown they have become a well-oiled machine and management could not be happier with their ongoing success.

Last year management sought to steer a major shift with the department because the market for asphalt shingle roofing had become less profitable. A pivot to a more profitable space was needed and metal roofs and coatings looked promising. The crews were skeptical at first, but after a bit of a slow start they have really taken the bull by the horns and are now pumping out high quality metal roofs and roof coatings. They are currently in the middle of a 150,000 SF metal re-roof by the name of Hillside Place and Josh’s crew is working on the Pacific Wildlife Research Center which is a project for the government of Canada.

With their added ability to install detailed EPDM and cold process SBS, the department has really transformed into a true multiscope machine answering the market’s needs.

Flynn Hamilton Branch Keeps Growing

Assisting in the Construction of a State-of-the-Art Hospital

With the recent changes and growth to the Hamilton production team it was time to assemble a new crew.

Jun Palma with his many years of roofing experience with Flynn has taken on the role of Roofing Production Foreman. The role suits Jun well for he has taken it on with great pride and dedication. The new crew recently completed a 215 SF TPO fully adhered/ mechanically fastened Access Storage in Kitchener. The project had a tight schedule but through constant communication and teamwork the team was able to meet the deadline and budget ahead of schedule.

Our Flynn crews at the Halifax branch are currently working on multiple roofs for the Bayers Lake Outpatient Centre in Nova Scotia.

The Halifax team is covering 13 different roofs totaling 592 SF with a ten-man crew. The roofing system is a 2 ply Mod. Bit. system, which will prove no problem to our experienced roofers. Good work guys, look forward to seeing pictures of the hospital when it is complete.

Custom Curved Flashings for Burrard Place

Designed by celebrated Vancouver architect, the late Bing Thom, Burrard Place with its dynamic curved curtain wall and architectural metal features is truly an icon of the largest mixed-use developments in downtown Vancouver.

When Flynn Vancouver was contracted to construct the curved flashings, they knew they were up to the task. We provided flat curved patterns for water jetting by working with our partners at TSC. Which left the necessary seams and edge work to our skilled fabrication team. In addition, our field crew used specialty equipment to apply the final curve to the fascia sections.

Barry Hoyano (left) and Christian Stockley (right) have done excellent work installing these custom flashings within a tight work area and schedule without sacrificing the quality Flynn is known for.

Thank you to all who made this project possible including, Michael Elias, Anna Davydova, Andy Tsuno, Justin Edmiston, Rav Sandhu and Johnson Fong.

23

Flynn Crew Declared Safety Champions on Amazon Site

Our Edmonton crews are currently undertaking a massive project that includes three scopes and support from neighboring branches.

The roofing scope includes 6,400 SF and is supported from both the Manitoba and Saskatchewan crews. While the glazing scope covers both interior and exterior work and the metals scope sits at 2,050 SF of work. This project demands a lot of boots in the field, and we know that Flynn is up to the task. Already our metals crew has been recognized by the Ledcor Group with the Safety Belt Award. The award marks their dedication to safety. The team modified their JHA’s to reflect the ribbed insulated panels, ordered the right equipment and maintained proper control zones.

Best of luck to the team, looks like you have quite a project in front of you. But you have your priorities right by putting safety first.

Saskatoon and Regina Team up

Our Saskatoon and Regina crews teamed up to install a roof just outside Saskatoon at the Nutrien Allan Potash Mine.

The dome shaped structure was re-roofed with a mechanically attached single ply PVC membrane. The steep slopes were a bit of a concern. But to do them safely the crew used a manlift for the installation of the membrane including the hot air welding of the seams.

It was critical to have the project completed during the annual two week mine shut down for maintenance to ensure the mine would lose no hours of productivity. Thanks to the hard work, long hours and dedication of the crew the schedule was met on time and without incident.

Putting a Green Roof on the University of New Brunswick

Flynn is currently wrapping up phase 1 of the 21,000 SF green roof at the University of New Brunswick.

The Fredericton based crew has been hard at work during a rough winter season to stay on schedule for phase 1 of the reroof. The scope of work for the first phase involved stripping the existing system down to the concrete deck and installing a new inverted 3-ply Mod. Bit. system. Phase 2 will then focus on the green roofing portion as well as the installation of the walkways. This will be the Moncton Branch’s first substantial green roof, looking forward to seeing how it looks when done.

Neither Rain, Nor Snow Could Stop the Combined Efforts of the Flynn Team

The new seven-storey, 600,000 SF hospital will have 164 beds as well as an expanded cancer care program. A multi-scope project of this scale would be a difficult task for any one branch, but the St. John’s branch had the support of the Flynn team from day one. Together with the Halifax branch, the Toronto Waterproofing Division, TSC, Central Estimating and the Operations Excellence team (OPEX) they were ready for everything and anything, including the weather.

It is well known that the weather on the east coast can be temperamental at the best of times. The annual snowfall in Newfoundland is over 15 feet and the site experienced wind speeds of over 120 km/hr or 74 mph. Special measures were taken to ensure materials, equipment, and our installed products were safe and secure during damaging weather events. Going the extra mile to make sure the site was secure and watertight at the end of the day were vital to keeping to the schedule.

The roofing scope was undertaken by the St. John’s branch and comprised of 1,610 SQS of 3-ply Mod. Bit. and 140 SQS of asphalt roofing. This involved numerous crews on the site at the same time working on various areas. A rotation of 33 St. John’s employees, including six foremen and a superintendent were required to get the work done. For the waterproofing the Toronto Waterproofing Division were flown in to complete the foundation wall around the entire permitter of the hospital.

The cladding scope was spearheaded by the Halifax branch and involved 165,000 SF of steel siding panels with various coloured finishes, 13,500 SF of liner siding and 300 aluminium composite panels. The team of 18 men were led by Mike Denny who was happy for a chance to return to his hometown, Corner Brook, NL. Mike’s knowledge of the region, his dedication to the quality of the systems installed, and his collaboration were vital to our success.

“The Corner Brook Hospital was a massive undertaking for the St. John’s and Halifax branches, and it could not have been completed without the support of our entire Flynn team. I want to thank Evan Bartram, William Kennedy, and Darren Swinemer for their contributions to relocate for this job and their commitments on

For the past two years our Flynn crews have been hard at work on the Corner Brook Acute Care Hospital in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

site. Plus, Central Estimating, TSC and the Toronto Waterproofing Division for their operations support,” said Greg Junop. “The Operations Excellence team (OPEX) was also a contributor to our success. Rick Lacey and Luke DeFazio flew out and helped us implement efficiency and quality improvements.”

Flynn completed all the main roofing and siding work by April 2022 with only the canopy roofing and cladding works, return works, leave out areas, and miscellaneous flashings left to complete. While the waterproofing work was successfully completed two months ahead of project schedule. The entire project continues to move along at a good pace, and we expect to be done by the end of the year.

29 Training Day

Who is the National Purchasing Team and How can they Help?

The National Purchasing team oversees the procurement of materials and equipment and the logistics of sending them where they are needed within Flynn.

Our crews can only work when they have the materials they need, when they need them. This takes an entire team of skilled individuals working together so they can ensure that our job sites are well supplied and ready to go on day one. With the supply chain issue becoming more prevalent the National Purchasing team becomes more critical to our success.

Logistics and Equipment

Logistics is the circulation that keeps our company’s blood flowing. The ability to move our materials and equipment from branch to branch allows us to take advantage of our scale and gives us a competitive edge. Sometimes it doesn’t make economical sense for a branch to own a large piece of equipment, but perhaps they could share it with several branches? It never hurts to reach out and see what equipment is out there. Our logistics team is constantly moving Flynn resources within our branches to where they are needed.

Purchasing

The purchasing side of the equation is an incredibly fine-tuned balancing act of determining our future needs in an ever-changing market. It is essential that our team forecast and identify future supply issues so we can be better prepared. One of the advantages of our scale is that we can share materials throughout our branches and that is why its vital we communicate any supply issues to our team as soon as possible.

OPEX Team Trains the Regina and Saskatoon Crews

Our OPEX team spent two weeks in the prairies training both our Regina and Saskatoon crews in a variety of roofing scopes.

Each branch received a five-day course, with each day dedicated to a different topic. These topics included: TPO, PVC, Mod. Bit. peel and stick, smartboard and EPDM. The OPEX trainers are not limited to these topics and the training is customizable depending on the needs of the branch.

“I just wanted to send a quick note of appreciation and thanks for the hands-on training with our field forces over the last two weeks. In speaking with the groups from both Regina and Saskatoon, several of them stated it was some of the best training they have ever had!

Your expertise and approach with the team is very well received and all of them are looking forward to having you both back out this year on some of their projects.

Speaking from a management side, we are also very appreciative and impressed with how you provided feedback and share information, we had some great conversations.”

—Sean Thompson, Saskatchewan Provincial Manager

If you are looking to train the rookies in your crews, please reach out to OPEX@flynncompanies.com to arrange a visit.

Pedro Costa Wins 2021 TASK

The OPEX TASK program was created to promote the communication of good ideas within the company from branch to branch.

Every year the OPEX team selects an outstanding submission and showcases it to all of Flynn. This year we are recognizing Pedro Costa from the Hamilton branch for his innovative light weight membrane application tool. The tool is made from aluminum and allows for much easier membrane application along the parapet.

TASK ideas don’t necessarily have to be field innovations, we are looking for ideas that increase the quality of any work we perform.

If you have a TASK idea, please submit in on the Portal or on Flynncrew.com.

OPEX Travel Program: Moving Crews to Meet Demand

The OPEX travel program aims to move our crews from branch to branch to keep our projects moving and our crews working.

“Big shout out to the OPEX travel crews that have supported two large metal roof/siding projects here in the Atlantic Region. We have had multiple crews from the Prairie region as well as a St. John’s metals crew cycling in and out on both projects throughout the winter. Without the dedication and commitment to the OPEX Travel Program, managing project expectations would have posed many challenges. For that I would like to put a big east coast thank you to all those listed below and our local crews for their commitment and efforts on these projects.”

SAFETY

Daniel Fish & Justin Simpson Receive Life Saver Award

We’d like to recognize the outstanding actions of Daniel Fish and Justin Simpson from the Edmonton branch for saving their fellow crew member.

When their crew member was in danger, Daniel and Justin recognized he needed help and they performed first aid, checked his vitals and kept him calm. They continued these efforts until the EMTs arrived and the employee has since made a recovery and is back to work.

May we all be as lucky to have two such outstanding individuals around when we need help.

Flynn Team Free Wounded Passengers from Car Wreck

Submitted by Mark Novecosky

Courtland Potoski and Brad Ironside from the Winnipeg glazing team have been recognized with the Life Saver award for their heroic efforts in freeing two passengers trapped in a car wreck.

On the day of the accident Brad and Courtland were driving to get fresh coffee when they were flagged down by locals. Upon pulling over they noticed a car had flipped onto its back. They wasted no time in grabbing their tools and safety glasses. Brad gave the safety glasses to the trapped passengers and he and Courtland began to remove the windshield. The first passenger was then able to slide out, but the second was pinned at the bottom of the vehicle. Luckily the accident was close to a nearby nursing station and they were able to help our guys safely remove the second passenger.

Quick Thinking Saves a Life

Dany Rutherford has been with Flynn Montreal for 10 years now.

At the start of his shift on Monday morning February 21st, he began suddenly feeling unwell. He had developed chest pains and a sharp stabbing in his arm. His colleague and good friend Eric Chenevert immediately noticed and suspected something serious was taking place and told him he needed to seek medical attention. They spoke to the foreman, Martin Morin about it, who without hesitating rushed Dany to the hospital. Doctors reported later that day that Dany did indeed have a heart attack. But because he was brought to the emergency room in time, it was caught early enough to avoid any permanent damage to his heart.

After a few days in hospital Dany is now back home recovering surrounded by his loved ones. We would like to thank Eric and Martin for looking out for Dany and acting quickly

Rob Bissonnette and Crew are Committed to Safety

Our Toronto crew were working on an EllisDon job called Block 12 and on multiple occasions their safety rep commended our Flynn foreman (Rob Bissonnette) on his commitment to safety.

“Rob, I'd like to thank you for the level of diligence you bring to your role. For a trade whose activities could be considered ʻhigher risk’ you work extremely safely, keep all your documentation up to date and have been a pleasure for our safety department and the wider project team to deal with.”

—Seamus Kiely, EllisDon Superintendent Commitment to safety always starts at the top and its good to see a foreman setting a strong standard for his entire crew.

Flynn Honours Curling Champion

Every year Flynn sponsors a local rink in Martensville (just north of Saskatoon).

The rink is important even on a national level and was used as a qualifying event for the 2022 Olympics. The picture below was taken during the inaugural Aly Jenkins Mixed Doubles Memorial curling tournament. Jenkins was a Saskatchewan curler who died two years ago due to complications in childbirth. All funds raised during the tournament go to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, which provides hospitals with life-saving equipment for premature babies born critically ill.

It’s an honour to be a part of such an important cause and we hope to see the tournament year after year.

The Regina Branch Stands up to Bullying

Anti-Bullying Day is an annual event held in Canada and other parts of the world where people wear a pink-coloured shirt to stand against bullying.

The initiative was started in Canada, where it is held on the last Wednesday of February each year. It’s a small gesture, but if each of us make this gesture we can show people we are unified in standing against bullying. Our Regina branch got together to do just that.

Cam’s Kids – Setting and Respecting Boundaries

As part of our partnership with Cam’s Kids we are sharing mental health resources that can help you support those in your life experiencing anxiety.

Cam’s Kids is committed to supporting young people struggling with anxiety by creating awareness of common symptoms and assisting in early identification. One method of supporting those who suffer from anxiety is by respecting their boundaries.

Boundaries are rules or guidelines that you set for yourself and the others in your life. By respecting these rules or guidelines

set by others, we can offer our loved ones the support they need to grow and develop. It can be all too easy to overlook or trivialize the boundaries of others because their guidelines lack significance to us. But its crucial to understand that if they are important to your loved ones, then they should be important to you too. It’s about respect and understanding - reassuring them that it’s ok that they feel the way they do.

You want to avoid judgement or imposing your own beliefs and instead respond with:

• I understand why you feel that way.

• Thank you for letting me know - I had no idea.

• How can I better support you right now?

We are all in this together, and when we support one another we all grow. So, let’s be kind to one another, and most importantly be kind to ourselves. This is just the tip of the iceberg on the advice Cam’s Kids offers to support better mental health.
