PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE "The Flynn Way" Over the past decades Flynn has grown rapidly and has solidified its place as a leader in the North American building envelope industry. There are many reasons for our success, but they can all be connected to the most important reason, “The Flynn Way”. The Flynn Way is our culture. It is our shared values that will always guide us no matter how large we grow. But to keep our culture connected with how we do business, we need to better understand how it guides our everyday choices. We must identify what it is and shift it from our unconscious to our conscious. This will allow us to become better stewards of the Flynn Way and pass it on to the next generation at Flynn. So, what are the guiding values that make up The Flynn Way? Everyone at Flynn should know that safety will always be number one. Nothing matters more than everyone going home happy and healthy at the end of the day. Safety is the foundation of our culture and should always be our top priority. Our other values are tied closely to safety and are captured with the phrases “Flynn Family Winning Together” and “The Truth Will Do”. “Flynn Family Winning Together” is the working environment we want for everyone at Flynn. It means more than simply succeeding as a team. It also means having fun while we are succeeding! A family should create a feeling of trust and security for everyone. This means a collaborative environment where we all feel respected, satisfied and appreciated. But that’s only half of it, we also need to win together. To do this we must always be improving, which can be achieved by innovating how we work and investing in our people. Continued improvement is why we created the OPEX and Flynn Learning and Development teams. Our OPEX team is dedicated to sharing best practices and innovations between branches. While our Learning and Development team focuses on developing our people. These combined efforts are how Flynn betters itself year after year. When we invest in our people, we grow the next generation of Flynn leadership. Even better, when we promote from within, we know our new leadership has experienced The Flynn Way firsthand. Winning together as a family is important, but The Flynn Way also guides relationship building. This is where “The Truth will Do” comes in. Strong relationships are built on trust. That is why we must approach all interactions with openness and honesty. This is how we build lasting relationships among our customers, suppliers and with each other. Its why people know that at the end of the day Flynn will get it done. Our day-to-day interactions may seem small, but together they build our reputation. “Flynn Family Winning Together” and “The Truth Will Do” are more than just slogans or mottos. They are an effort to capture “The Flynn Way” and bring it from the unconscious to the conscious. It has happened time and time again where a company grows too big and they lose what made them special. That is why I take the time to explain The Flynn Way and its importance. We all could use a reminder of the values that got us where we are today and how they can help guide us in the future. So, when you hear “Flynn Family Winning Together” or “The Truth Will Do”, remember what these words mean and how they should guide us every day. If we all do this, there is no limit to our future

Flynn Flash Feedback We recently sent out a survey to our readers to gauge what you like and dislike about the magazine. We received a large collection of feedback and we took the time to read each submission. There were lots of positive comments and we really appreciated reading them. In particular people enjoyed the new activity section, so we are going to make that a permanent addition. There were also plenty of suggestions on how we could improve the Flash and we wanted to take some time to discuss how we are going to use this survey to shape future editions. Everyone enjoys seeing their own branch and the projects they work on in the Flash. That’s why it’s understandable that many of responses were about certain topics, teams or people not being covered. Unfortunately, sometimes content isn’t there because of space issues or it was never submitted. That is why we are moving to expand the Flash’s scope so we can include more stories and provide better representation. But that means we need everyone’s help getting the stories in. Anyone can submit a story. All you need to do is send in a good picture along with some text answering the who, what, why and where. Once we have that we can work with you to put together the story and make sure it ends up in the Flash. We are always looking for stories that showcase accomplishments, community involvement and the projects we are working on. So, if you have an idea, please reach out. The other concern raised by the survey was about the waste of paper when printing out a copy of the Flash for all employees. To address this, we had a chat with our printer and agreed that a price increase was worth it to print all future Flash editions on recycled paper, including the one you are currently holding. Both steps will help put us on the right path to creating an improved Flash more of us can enjoy.

Utah Valley University Completed by SLC Team Submitted by Becky Dates

The Salt Lake City branch recently completed work on the Utah Valley University School of Business. This multi-million-dollar project was one of the first multi-scope projects the SLC team undertook. The glazing, cladding, and roofing teams needed to work closely together to ensure delivery of this total envelope. The schedule was tight and the working quarters were cramped, but the team pushed on and got the job done. Looking forward to seeing more projects from one of Flynn’s newest branches.

Flynn Vancouver Working on Next Generation of Energy Efficient Buildings Submitted by Steven Stone

Flynn is currently working on creating Vancouver’s first commercial Passive House building at 825 Pacific Street. A passive house is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, which reduces the ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling. The scope is about 16,700 SF of Accumet panels, 2,200 SF of perforated aluminum screens, and 3,500 SF of non-combustible Accuform panels. During construction there were three separate air tests where positive and negative pressures along with smoke and infrared thermographic imaging were conducted. Aaron LaPlante

(foreman) and his crew worked diligently to ensure that all membrane work was completed to the highest standard and passed each air test without issue. After the success of the air tests, the final hurdle was completing the Accumet panel install on schedule. Due to the limited access and small staging area on site, panels had to be organized by swing stage drop and delivered as required. Special thanks to Tim Leon, Rav Sandhu, and Andrew Zubenko for their efforts to achieve project completion. Leaving Our Mark on the Kansas City Skyline Submitted by Archie MacDonald

The latest building to pierce the Kansas City skyline is located at 1400 Baltimore in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. This distinctive, futuristic and very modern 18 story high rise boasts 10 floors of parking garage and 8 floors of office space. At 260,000 SF and with three scopes (metal, glazing, waterproofing) this project is a monumental achievement that Flynn was proud to be a part of. The typical challenges of high-rise development come into play on this one; coordination of trades, a tight downtown jobsite and the continuous push to maintain schedule. Extra wide and tapered accent cantilevers on the building’s exterior presented a unique challenge. The metal division teamed up with BrandSafway to provide hydro-mobile mast climbing platform lifts which allows for access at all the ins and outs while installing the metal panels. At the parking garage, the metal scope of work consists of 60,000 SF of a variety of panel types and colours. The waterproofing portion is 35,000 SF and includes installing a fire stopping scope (passive form of fire prevention). Finally, the glazing scope includes 20,000 SF of pre-glazed window wall, 76,310 SF of unitized curtainwall and ground level custom system with jumbo 10 by 17-foot glass panels. Flynn Completes “Chinese-Styled Gate” Submitted by Steven Clark

Flynn recently completed a project for the new LRT that runs to the south end of Edmonton. As the train enters River Valley it goes under the “Chinese Gate” that Flynn designed and installed. The gate consists of 600 SF of clay tiles on a gate gazebo feature. After the train enters the gate it will drive under 6,500 SF of fiberglass sandwich panels also installed by the Flynn team. The project was completed by both the architectural and roofing team and the final product looks great.

Preventive Maintenance Saves our Clients in the Long Run Submitted by Serge LeBlanc

Leon’s furniture store is a long-time client of the Moncton branch due to our team’s diligence and quality work. Annually they will call on the service team to provide preventive maintenance. While walking the roof they check for any small problems that could become big problems if ignored. Last year they replaced a small patch of TPO and this year they replaced fasteners and fixed some seams. These are small tasks, but they help extend the life of the roof and make our clients happy. Perfectly Balanced Honeycomb Panels Submitted by Steven Stone

The Paramount is a large development consisting of one office and three residential towers in Richmond, BC. The cladding scope consists of a variety of panels, but it was the Larcore honeycomb panels which were a concern for the team. The panels are called honeycomb panels due to the hexagon design of its innards which help provide a balance of weight and rigidity. The team needed to learn to effectively design and install the panels. To achieve this, specialized equipment was purchased to augment the panel shop’s production capabilities. However, soon after the equipment was purchased, the world was hit with the first wave of COVID19 and this increased the lead time significantly. By the time the machine arrived at the panel shop, only a few weeks remained in which to set up the equipment and train employees to run it. But through hard work and determination they successfully ramped up production to flood the site with material. Special thanks to Tim Leon (shipping), Rav Sandhu (trim Shop) and Andrew Zubenko (panel shop) for their outstanding efforts to meet material and quality requirements on this high-profile project.

Revitalizing a Century Old Building Submitted by Neil Winters

The Brandon service crew embarked a unique project when the branch was awarded the Minnedosa Civic Centre re-roof. The downtown building is 106 years old and during its century-long existence it has served as both a post office and government service building. The project was a re-roof with a pitch rip and new build-up which was easy for our service crew. Things went smoothly, and hopefully with this little touch-up the building can last another century.

Flynn Ottawa Secures Four Year OLRT Project Submitted by Mathieu Guay

Flynn Ottawa is currently working on the cladding and glazing work for the Ottawa Light Rail Transit Confederation Line Phase II slated to start November 2021 and run through until 2025. Securing this work is a testament to our relationship-building with our customers; it was a ‘all hands on deck’ approach which clearly paid off in the end. Throughout the pre-tender phase Flynn was integral in providing feedback on material procurement, specification requirements, constructability, cost savings, etc. Seeing as Flynn was involved in phase one of the project, we were in the advantageous position of having prior knowledge of the systems being used. Previous OLRT work Flynn has completed

When it came to the pricing of these projects, we had 16 different stations to estimate within approximately two months. Resources were strained but we were able to provide pricing, on time and accurately, through an impressive show of teamwork. Cladding and glazing joined forces in completing take-offs and sharing the information across scopes. Glazing commandeered drafting assistance in take-offs and worked at an improvised ‘assembly line’ approach to estimating all the different stations. Our team is quite proud of our work in securing the opportunity to work on a project of such high importance and visibility to the city. This is a great opportunity to both strengthen our new and existing partnerships and lay the groundwork for future projects on the horizon.

Taking in the View from Senior Vista Living Centre Submitted by Derek Matthews

The Senior Vista Living Centre is a 17-storey building that offers a beautiful view of Victoria, including some of our past and current work. You can see the Customs House and Bellewood in downtown Victoria, the Empress Hotel Service retro-fit, and all the completed works at the CFB dockyards. On the east side there is the CFB Esquimalt and the Graving Docks where we have spent the last several years completing cladding, roofing, and glazing projects for all naval facility buildings. The view from the west looks over several active projects including Bellewood, the Customs House, and West Bay Quay. As Flynn grows, it’s nice to take in the beautiful view and reflect on our past and future achievements. This current project is the Senior Vista Living Centre. It is a true multi-scope project. Superintendent Geoff Myers was able to meet the client’s revised dates with support from Vancouver. This support included the Supper Bowl winning roofing crew led by Kenny Tran which provided extra manpower and coaching for one of Victoria’s crews. The combined crews are putting a great effort in getting this roof done and exceeding the client’s expectations. Looking forward to seeing the Victoria branch continue to shape their skyline.

Each Job Offers a New View and a New Challenge Submitted by Dennis Butt

Our crews in St. John’s are hard at work with a variety of projects. They completed a new parapet for the RCMP headquarters and a parapet reconfiguration for the Battery. They are also at the Molson Brewery where the work had to be carried out kneeling and even lying on your stomach at times. No two jobs are ever the same, but our crews are always ready for everything.

Business as Usual in Ottawa Submitted by JF Lamirande

The Ottawa team is currently working on a new condo building in the Zibi district. The project is an inverted roof, with white ballast and is about 26,000 SF. Usually the view on the building is quite nice, but the day we took these photos was cloudy, which is a silver lining for working a hot rubber job in the summer.

Flynn Kinetic Wall Creates Shimmering Effect Submitted by Tim Si

The fabrication shop in Winnipeg recently completed a kinetic wall that creates a shimmering effect with the wind. The wall is comprised of over 13,000 six by six inches stainless steel plates that move with the wind, which results in a shimmer running throughout the entire wall. Preparation was key to achieve this visual effect. The fabrication shop created a mock-up which was sent to Ottawa where it was tested in a wind tunnel. Changes were made due to the test results and the final product was delivered to site for installation by Flynn crews. The final effect is quite mesmerizing. Flynn Fabrication & Installation Team Finish Superstore Submitted by Shanna Owen

The Edmonton fabrication and installation team recently completed panel work on the Real Canadian Superstore. The shop worked hard to create both fully-built panels and knock-down panels. They created over 350 panels, comprising of blue, white and silver to create the desired design finish. Once the panels were ready, they were shipped to our field crews. The field team installed 32,000 SF of steel cladding along with the 350 panels. There were many challenges, including a strict deadline, coordinating with other trades, and the lovely Edmonton weather. But the crew pulled it off and the result looks great. The crew included Foreman Tim McConnell, Darryl Saindom, Dmitry Karpof, Frank Ross, Vincent Smith and Yuri Sinyavsky

Victorian Era House Surrounded by ACM Panels Submitted by Steven Stone

This project consists of building a vibrant community around the iconic heritage Coulter House. The Victoria era home will create a focal point for the new sleek architectural style of the community now surrounding it. It was Flynn’s job to build the large feature wall surrounding the heritage house, which will consist of almost half of the project’s total panel count. To ensure the safety of the house it was relocated during construction with a tight deadline set for its return. With this is mind, the team needed to stick very closely to the schedule. Excluding outer panels, all panels were ordered pre-mobilization. This made it possible to have panels on site almost immediately after mobilization, and significantly reduced the quantity of panels to be measured. Kyle Wakely and his crew worked tirelessly and effectively around other trades without compromising safety or the quality of the install. They successfully brought the architect’s vision of “classic contrasted with modern” to life. Flynn Edmonton Metals Crew Recognized for Outstanding Safety Submitted by Jordy Ryhorchuk

The Flynn Edmonton metals crew working on the Misericordia Hospital Emergency Department expansion has been recognized for their outstanding safety standards by PCL. In particular, PCL praised the crew’s attention to detail in their FLRA and safety records. Dmitry Karpov who managed the FLRA, was personally awarded with the Safety Star. To celebrate the team had a pizza lunch and took the photo below.

Flynn Crew Joins the 640 Club Submitted by Justin Lediard

Project Dakota is an 850,550 SF new TPO roof currently underway in Hamilton.

The size of the project requires manpower from the Hamilton, Toronto, and Cambridge branches. Almost all of the Hamilton roofing production and sheet metal staff have helped on this project at some point. Recently during production our crews managed to break their squares-per-day record by laying 640 SQ’s (64,000 SF) in one day. The record was set by Pedro Costa’s and Mike Rodriques’s crews through dedication and teamwork. To commemorate the achievement the foremen had t-shirts printed with a “640 Club” logo.

Energy-Conductive Panel Installation First of its Kind in Canada Submitted by Kathy McNeill

At the new Red River College Innovation Centre our crew led by Foreman Phil Bonneteau has started installing the buildingintegrated photovoltaic panels. The panels have a tapered design that will provide visual depth and reflect the sunlight in different hues, all while absorbing/ conducting energy and protecting the building from the elements. The RRC Innovation Centre is intended to be an active laboratory measuring energy consumption and generation levels for electricity, heating, cooling, and lighting. These BIPV panels will help offset energy consumption in the building up to 193Mwh/year. The installation will be one of the first of its kind in Canada and is hopefully a sign of the future of cladding.

Our Regina Crews are Keeping Busy Submitted by Drew Halliday

The crews in Regina are currently working on the Southland Mall which involves a re-roof with two different systems in two different areas. While this can be a little tricky, it won’t be a problem for the crew. The other crews are finishing up work on two schools. The Crescent and Thompson school which are both heritage buildings for the Regina School Division. Its pretty typical to receive school re-roof requests during the summer since the schools tend to be empty. This of course comes with a strict timeframe, but Flynn will get it done on time.

Service and Metals Weather the Storm Together Submitted by Alex Boterman

Through the late spring and early summer months southern Ontario experienced extreme thunderstorms and that meant a higher demand for our Flynn Service teams. No one wants to turn away work, so the Cambridge branch called on the support of the metals department. The sheet metal crew was split up to allow another crew on the road to support our customers in a timely fashion. Like Father, Like Son Submitted by Lauren Fry

To help during the busy summer season Flynn Denver brought in a few interns. Matthew Young, Roofing Operations Manager and Steve Pohl, Roofing Estimator, introduced their sons to the “Flynn Way” for the summer of 2021. Wyatt Pohl is currently attending Colorado Mesa University and will earn his degree in Construction Management in December. The internship gave him a good opportunity for some practical experience. He spent his time visiting sites, ordering materials and assisting the project manager and superintendent. “Learning about the roofing industry and getting true hands-on experience in the field was my favorite part of the internship,” said Wyatt Pohl. “I had a great time seeing these projects come to life.” Hopefully we will see more of Wyatt as he starts the first steps in a long career in the industry.

Reclaimed Roofing Materials Repurposed for Farming Community Submitted by Chris Bourgault

Flynn Vancouver is proud to report that they have successfully diverted 3 million board feet of insulation from the landfills since 2018. It all started on a local IKEA roof replacement when Flynn posted an ad on Craigslist announcing 14,000 gently used 4x8 sheets of Poly-Iso (insulation) were available to be taken from the site for free. A local farmer who is well connected with the farming community was interested in the insulation. He had exactly what we needed in terms of transportation abilities, safety, storage, and connections to ensure that it would be reused to insulate barns and outbuildings. It quickly became apparent that a great partnership was in the works, and the concept could be viable on future projects where insulation was to be replaced with new. Fast-forward three years, and every roofing superintendent has “the farmer” on speed dial. This practice led to repurposing other roofing materials like EPDM membranes, which as it turns out, are desirable among farmers to keep weeds down. Below is a pic of EPDM living a second life on an organic blueberry farm and a Flynn crew at work diverting insulation from a project underway in north Vancouver. Great work to everyone involved and special thanks to frontline leaders Mike Lavinsky, Kenny Tran, Kevin Gysbers, and Bryan Perrin for leading the charge on this important and fulfilling green initiative.

Combined Flynn Effort Created Seattle Spire Submitted by Matt Rassmussen

The Spire is a project in Seattle consisting of 12,000 SF of panels created by Flynn Manufacturing and 12,000 SF of Span Flex panels. It includes a mechanical screen at the very top of the building that totaled 6,000 SF alone. The Seattle team unitized this screen so they could install it quicker and reduce installation hours. The screen is an impressive 23 feet tall and 256 feet around and required coordination with Don Delaney, Director of Engineering and Rice Engineering to design the anchorage. In the pictures below you can see the crew installing the last unit to the Spire. Tyson Wendler(foreman) in the scissor lift, Brian Peterman is up on the steel at the top of the wall, John Shelly and Marcos Perez are on the deck lifting the unit. Everything went to plan and the field team executed it great. “The Spire took a coordinated effort between the Seattle crews and our engineering support from Don Delaney,” said Matt Rassmussen, Project Manager. “Now that it is done it will stand as a testament to what the Flynn team can accomplish when we pool our resources and talent.”

Flynn Speedwall™, the Evolution of the Building Envelope Submitted by Don Delaney

Flynn Speedwall: a large-format prefabricated wall module system that has taken three years of R&D and the input of dozens of Flynn people to accomplish. This is an evolution in building envelope cladding that has been awarded a patent in the United States for its technological advancement. The system is the combination of three distinct disciplines we offer into a new expression that is greater than the sum of its parts – the precision of unitized curtain wall, the thermal properties of insulated metal panels with the aesthetics and functionality of architectural rain screen cladding. All in one factory-assembled module. Our 6450 Unitized Curtain Wall system is the genesis of the Flynn Speedwall. We use a variation of its extruded aluminum frame to create the structural support for the modules. Onto this we apply a horizontal insulated panel sealed to the frame to become the air/vapour barrier and thermal insulation. We then install a rain screen cladding on top of the insulated metal panel

to finish the module. A wide range of architectural finishes can be used, from aluminum panels, cement boards, faux wood siding, terracotta tiles to even brick veneer. Windows are framed within the wall system and are factory installed. Gaskets between the Flynn Speedwall modules seal the wall. Like unitized curtain wall, there is no need to be on the exterior of the building. The system modules are intended to be very large, extending from column to column and floor to floor. This can be from 6m to 9m/20ft to 30ft wide and approx. 3m/10ft tall, all completed in the factory. The result is greatly improved thermal performance, R30 up to R50+, and very little air leakage. The performance is well beyond anything commercially available. “Flynn Speedwall is an answer to an emerging reality in construction where higher density is pushing us to build taller, while the climate crisis is pushing for better performance,” said Don Delaney, Director of Engineering. “We can’t continue to build leaky, thermally inefficient buildings. We must continue to innovate so we can build better.”

The system has now been successfully tested for air leakage, water penetration, structural and seismic performance. It has also passed difficult S134 fire performance test. Flynn Vancouver Completes Eight Year Crowning Achievement Submitted by Jarrod Shaw

Flynn embarked on a difficult and ambitious journey eight years ago to become the preeminent building envelope provider at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The journey has been long, challenging, and has pushed our team to constantly improve. But with 17 major projects completed, over 40 million dollars in revenue generated, and over 200,000 man-hours worked, it is safe to say Flynn has left its mark in Vancouver and planted their flag at YVR.

Flynn’s first large projects at YVR posed major hurdles on the road to success. These consisted of unitized and interior glazing at the YVR AB Connector and 70,000 SF of cladding, glazing, and curved composite panels for the YVR Airside Operations Building. Right out of the gate Flynn was met with the difficult realities of airport work. Early productivity was hampered by confined working conditions set out by strict security protocols and frequent delivery/work shutdowns due to inclement weather. Aggressive scheduling, stringent engineering requirements and a local maxim that “YVR operations stop for no one” all took their toll on early performance. Despite these restrictions the projects were completed on time and to the satisfaction of the client. Flynn’s work at the YVR Airside Operations Building even won the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) award for excellence. But there was much room for improvement. The hardest and most important lesson learned was that collaboration is key. Regrouped and rearmed with the benefit of experience, Flynn put these lessons to the test at the next major YVR project, the Expediated Transfer Facility 4. This contract consisted of ladder frame glazing, metal siding, architectural panels, and louvres. Crews worked days and night to ensure the project was successful, which resulted in the completion of ETF 4 on schedule and on budget. This solidified Flynn’s place as a major player at YVR.

Flynn’s story at YVR is far from over. The work will stand as a perfect example of Flynn’s unique ability to offer the total envelope solution and our culture of “Flynn Family Winning Together.” In the years that followed, Flynn took on larger volumes and increasingly complex work. Whether renovation, new construction, or design assist, Flynn became YVR’s go-to when a job needed to get done. ETF 1 & 2, Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, RSO International & Transborder, Pier B and International Terminal re-roofs, The CORE Exit Canopy and SPIL are but a few such successful projects to date. In the winter of 2019 Flynn was handed its largest and most complex challenge to date. Pier D included four additional gates to host the largest commercial jets in the world and the new “crown jewel” of YVR, the Mythical Island Experience. This thematic atrium consisted of a fully enveloped, tapered ellipse glass rotunda inside the terminal, accented by custom waterjetcut architectural fascia panels. Pier D was a stunning success and again was delivered to the client on time and on budget. In addition to this, and owing to the crew’s unrelenting efforts and implacable safety record, Jarrod Shaw (PM) and Doug Villeneuve (Director) were recognized with PCL Leadership Awards. These awards have never before been given out to individuals outside their organization.

OPEX Provides Onsite Training to Toronto Crew OPEX Roofing Technical Training Specialist, Jose Neiva was recently asked to visit one of our Toronto projects to provide some onsite training. The crew was planning on making heavy use of the InvertaPress on their most recent project which comprised of about 100,000 SF of Mod. Bit. roof. The InvertaPress allows for quick and efficient application of one and two-part adhesives. Which in turn saves on time, manpower and materials for the project. After some hands-on training the crew was well prepared to use the InvertaPress, which means more money saved on future jobs. Halifax Glazing Completes “The Jade” Submitted by Blair Cormier

The Jade was an impressive introductory project for Halifax’s new glazing division. The project consisted of a large multistorey, customized, curving, two-sided SSG and a stick-built curtain wall system. Our team that worked on The Jade was comprised of our skilled glazing mechanics and leadership who had previously installed Flynn’s unitized curtain wall system at the local landmark “Nova Centre”. This experience allowed the team to provide a quality installation ahead of schedule and beyond all expectations. Paul Carcone, Glazing Operations Specialist from OPEX provided support and guidance throughout to ensure no stone was left unturned and that all efforts and best practices were followed diligently from start to finish. The highly visible installation phase of the work was located prominently at one of Halifax’s main downtown thoroughfares and caught the eye of many local developers and general contractors who have since provided exciting opportunities for Flynn.

Evan and Brendon from Regina were commuting to work on a Friday morning when they came across a fire burning close to an apartment complex. The crew pulled over and noticed that there was a fridge on fire right outside the apartment. Thinking fast, they retrieved their extinguisher from the truck and quickly put the fire out. Without their intervention the fire could have easily spread to the nearby apartment complex. Thank you to Brendon and Evan for doing your part to keep the community safe.

HEALTH AND SAFETY Missing is Better than Hitting Submitted by Jim McDougall

Through 2021 the team in Calgary has shifted some of their focus to identifying near miss incidents as a leading and not lagging indicator to H&S Performance. In the first half of 2021, the Calgary team has made 166 near miss or hazard identification observations. The process is simple: they track near misses by taking a photo and adding a short narrative to it. During 2021 there have been many great submissions. When Mindaugas Razutis (metals foreman) was using an angle grinder to cut metal, the guard on the grinder was shooting the sparks away, but also at his hoodie. Those sparks caused burns to his clothes but did not result in any injury. The team took the near miss information on the angle grinder and used this to modify their work by using a different tool with a sparkless blade. It also gave the opportunity to recognize the worker for bringing this to their attention.

It is also important to make observations and corrective actions even when the hazards or conditions are left by other trades. A sheet of plywood was recently left unsecured by another trade on the 14th floor at the Calgary Cancer Centre. Metals Foreman Ashley Roberts noticed this plywood laying on the roof and made sure it was secured and not able to be blown away. Calgary has been using this near miss information to help guide their safety talks and tail gates topics. Here are a couple of helpful suggestions from the Calgary team to those who want to follow suit: 1. Keep it simple, quick email, text, get the message out easily don’t make it hard 2. Recognize the NM or HID, respond back to the employee, thank them for their contribution 3. Do something! Put corrective actions in place to prevent future incidents

IN THE COMMUNITY Spokane Team Helping Feed the Community Submitted by Kim Orr

The Spokane office had an opportunity to step back into the community and package Bite2Go kits for children in their area at the 2nd Harvest Food bank. Bite2Go provides children with a mix of easy-to-open, singleserving, nonperishable food items for meals and snacks over the weekend during the school year. Twelve Flynn employees assembled 948 kits in under two hours. These kits provide food to kids through the elementary schools in the Spokane area. During COVID it is even more important that children are receiving meals.

Adam Christen, Director of Service, was at the starting bag station and set the pace for the rest of the team.

Flynn Calgary Branch Supports the Walk Across Canada Challenge Submitted by Lisa Hawkins

The J.C.C. Hanna Hawks K-12 students, staff and community members completed the Walk Across Canada Challenge which promotes the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

In 88 days, a combined total of over 11,500 km were completed by the students. It was an incredible feat and the Calgary Branch donated goodie bags filled with water bottles and a variety of workout equipment to the participants.

At the end of the day the Flynn team restocked the stations for the next shift.

IN THE COMMUNITY Annual Flynn Spring Tradition – Day of Caring Submitted by John Powers

Every year Flynn volunteers from the Kelowna branch participate in the Day of Caring coordinated by United Way SIBC Day of Caring. The Day of Caring allows employees to support local non-profit organizations by completing a project that the non-profit which might not otherwise have the manpower or resources for. This year they tackled a project on behalf of a collaboration between Elevation Outdoors and CRIS Adaptive Adventures to transform two SeaCans into summer bike storage and rental facilities at the base of Knox Mountain. The project is a social enterprise for both organizations to offer adaptive, low barrier and regular bike rentals in support of their youth programs. Flynn Raises Over $25,000 for Steps for Life Submitted by Jenna van Nostrand

Steps for Life is a national fundraiser to help those affected by workplace tragedy. It raises funds to support services for families who’ve suffered from a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational

disease. Flynn has been a national partner for Steps for Life since 2018 and over those four years Flynn employees have collected 420 donations and have raised over $25,000. The Steps for Life event is an event that closely aligns with our safety values and we look forward to supporting it every year.

Flynn Partners with Cam’s Kids Foundation We are excited to announce our new partnership with Cam’s Kids, which will give our branches in Canada the opportunity to benefit from this important Foundation. Cam’s Kids is committed to "supporting young people struggling with anxiety" by creating awareness of common anxiety symptoms and assisting in early identification. The Foundation was founded by Cam’s family after his tragic passing during his first year at University. Flynn has always been keenly aware of the potentially devastating impact of mental health issues on the whole family, which is why we provide all our employees access to the Employee Family Assistance Program (see back cover). Our partnership with Cam’s Kids allows us to continue to raise awareness on mental health, particularly with young adults.
