PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Cascading Culture

In the last edition of Flynn Flash, I talked about Culture, and the importance of leading where we want our culture to go, rather that having it drift to a place on its own. With that in mind, we have done a lot of work over the past few months in ensuring our culture continues to be strong, vibrant and real, and is taken from the subconscious to the conscious, every day.

By now, you may have noticed some of the branding that came out of leadership workshops that led to defining our Vision and Mission, as well as our Culture and Values, as displayed on this page. It is important to reinforce these things not only with posters and branding, but more importantly by authentically displaying these behaviors every day.

We have made significant progress with the cascade of the culture workshops from senior regional teams to branches, and departments within the office. As of the date of writing this, over 1000 Flynn employees in the office have completed the Flynn culture feedback survey, and many have participated in the accompanying workshop.

For those of you in the field, you can look forward to receiving a similar survey in the near future. Your feedback is important!

The open discussion on culture and what we should Start, Stop and Continue has been very well received so far, and has produced some honest feedback, which we are embracing in our efforts to make sure our great culture is healthy today, and gets stronger while we are all at Flynn, so that those that follow us have the same great work experience we have all enjoyed for so long.

The next major phase of discussing our culture and what it means to all of us is the cascade to everyone in the field through a Toolbox talk. It will be supported by a video discussing our Vision, Mission, Values and Culture and has been prepared with soundtracks in English, Spanish and French. This video, and audio podcasts of all three languages, will be part of a Flynn Culture “Toolbox” which will be shared with all crews in the field. For practical reasons, Field based employees have not been able to participate in the cascading workshops in the office, but they will get the opportunity to hear what the key messaging is and will have the opportunity to provide their honest feedback and ideas as well.

Although what happens in the office is a lot different than what happens in the field at Flynn every day, our culture is the glue that connects all of our teams that make us successful and competitive as a company. This success is what makes our customers want to work with us, and is what makes people want to join our teams, office and field, now and in the future.

Stay safe!

Doug

Succession Planning Announcement

The purpose of this memo is to announce some leadership evolution at Flynn, but first some background. Every organization must inevitably face the reality of succession at all levels. Success requires strategic thinking, careful planning, good communication and many steps over time.

I would like to announce that in line with the succession planning journey that we have been on for decades, both John McManus (COO) and I will be stepping back from our current day-to-day duties over a planned period of transition.

We would like to congratulate Dan Sims who has accepted the role and responsibility of President and CEO of this great company, effective July 1st, 2024. Dan will be transitioning into his new role over the next number of months. Dan has worked at Flynn for over 25 years and has successfully taken on more and more responsibility as he has worked his way up in the organization to his current role as Senior Vice President, Western Canada, building relationships at all levels within Flynn as well as with our major customers along the way.

In January 2023 we added a Senior Vice President Leadership layer in our 5 distinct regions, Dan Sims (Western Canada), Mark Agius (Eastern Canada), Aaron Nuss (Western US), Paul Manchisi (Central US) and Paul Nunes (Service). This succession planning structure is working very well and will not change. These regional SVPs are essentially the Chief Operating Officers for their areas of responsibility. Dan Sims will announce his successor later this week.

The opportunities for continued profitable growth for Flynn remain as real today as they have been for the past 40 plus years. The expectation is that the company will continue to pursue profitable growth opportunities, with the result being that the company could very well triple in size over the next 10 years. This would mirror the growth trajectory that the company has been on and would undoubtedly present career opportunities for many people within Flynn.

It is important to note that John and I will both remain significant shareholders in Flynn, and we will remain on the Board of Directors for the foreseeable future. We are simply stepping away from our day-to-day duties as we support the many capable people half a generation younger than us.

We are determined to ensure that the mistakes we have seen in other companies are not repeated in Flynn, where founders have been reluctant to support succession until it is too late to do so proactively in a way which benefits all stakeholders and the longterm success and continuity of the company.

We look forward to a very bright future at Flynn and to supporting the next generation of our leaders.

Should anyone have any questions, please feel free to reach out any time.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,

A Coordinated Effort

This unique condo community showcased superb cooperation between engineering, TSC, production, and shop teams.

Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, Artists Alley Condos (234 Simcoe) features a three-tower mixed residential community. One building in particular features a diagonal lattice weave spanning 35 storeys across the façade. These intersecting helix panels form a net of diamond shapes on the exterior balcony slabs which wrap around the perimeter of the entire tower.

Originally this project was awarded as a conventional segmented panel system, that would have been mounted on curved structural steel columns that spanned from balcony slab to balcony slab. The architecturally complex geometry and complicated interfaces on the project required a more creative solution. Presented with this challenge, Flynn’s Design team opted to develop a fully assembled, curved modular “Diagrid” panel system capable of spanning and supporting itself between balcony slabs. The assembled panels integrated elements similar to an airplane wing with an internal panel assembly consisting of intermittent ribs and stringers to support the exterior aluminum skin. Assemblies were then anchored to the building by custom extrusions and anchor channels embedded in the concrete.

In collaboration and with the design assistance of TSC, the 1,120 aluminum panel assemblies were then modelled, and scan verified onsite to ensure the precise fit of the entire helix diagrid shroud system around the entire building. A similar process was used to create a smaller band on one of the other adjacent towers, spanning across 3 storeys to create a continuity of design within the three towers.

The manufacturing and delivering of the diagrid parts also required a collaborative effort between Flynn manufacturing facilities, with the Winnipeg plant cutting diagrid parts for assembly at the Toronto plant.

Flynn Helps Connect a Community

Located in Edmonton’s historic Coronation Park, the new Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre is an innovative hub that inspires, connects, and encourages wellness for all ages and abilities.

The new facility integrates a wide variety of recreation interests and skill levels. A fitness centre, gymnasia courts, walking/jogging track, and community spaces operate alongside a world-class velodrome, while complementing the existing Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre.

This project is an architectural partnership between HCMA and long-time collaborators Dub Architects, in association with Faulkner Browns Architects and Clark Builders as the general contractor. The project has been developed in partnership with the Argyll Velodrome Association and World Triathlon Series Edmonton

Once complete, the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will be seeking a Category Two facility standard designation by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which is the world governing body of cycling. This designation qualifies a facility to host World Cups, Continental Championships, Junior World Championships and other national and international cycling events.

Flynn was awarded the glazing envelope scope of work which covers 30,000 SF exterior curtain wall, 8000 SF interior storefront skylight, 1500 LF guard rails, 6000 SF backpainted glass and more. Installing 42mm thick and 1500 pound heavy glass is challenging, but nothing that Flynn can't handle. The glazing installation started June 2023 and is scheduled to be finished by Sept 2024. The Vancouver shop did wonderful fabrication work, made possible by Harvey Mwendwa's team's drafting work.

Flynn Manufacturing Meets

Last December, Manufacturing Managers from Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Toronto were invited to celebrate Salt Lake City’s win as the Manufacturing Safety Awardee for 2023. The event was fun filled and was well attended.

In one of the conversations during the event, Doug Flynn asked how much square footage we thought Manufacturing Operations occupy to support Flynn’s needs. I think we settled at a million square feet – plus. This alone tells you that shop operations have become a cornerstone of Flynn’s presence in North America. That space will continue to grow and should grow strategically and efficiently.

Through John Mplias’ (VP Manufacturing) initiative, the team buckled down and went to work. The group sequestered themselves in one of the board rooms and shared their expertise on Safety, Quality, and Productivity. We also communicated what was lacking and what needed to get better. There is always room to get better and be more efficient. The size of the Shops that each manager represented did not matter. Each leader had his own set of challenges but more importantly, each one was able to give ideas to offer solutions and solve different situations. This was an active and energetic group; must be the coffee. Kidding aside, the collaboration and cooperation was very evident.

Pouring on the Performance

Hamilton Foreman (Mike Rodrigues) and his crew recently completed a 16,500 sf Siplast NVS sloped lightweight concrete Mod. Bit project at Mohawk College in Hamilton.

The crew managed to complete the required scope under a very strict timeline. Mike and crew brought their expertise in lightweight concrete pour applications to this project and did an incredible job.

Crew members included: Mike Rodrigues (foreman), Justin Lediard, Peter Bendyk, Taylor Lediard, Andre Pereira, David Fitzgibbon, Kenner Moyeja, Yohandric Moyeja, Jonaiker Moyeja and Jesus Becera Reyes

In one of the activities, the group walked the SLC shop, made observations and documented their findings on the board. This process is called a Gemba Walk. The good findings were highlighted while the ones needing improvements were corrected. This is an activity that can be practiced in any shop and everyone in the group does them regularly in their branches. Lessons learned were also shared and, on a few occasions, when a problem or challenge was brought up that no one had a fix to; the group took these back to their branches as homework. We also agreed that we need to immerse ourselves in new technologies to enhance operations and be industry leaders.

As much as we can “see” each other in Teams meetings, interactions like these are very important and productive. Flynn Manufacturing is always up for the challenge. For Manufacturing and every other division, for each roadblock taken down, a new one may come up. But, if we work as a team, we will always stay on top.

SLC Glazing and Metals Teams win Together

Flynn’s Salt Lake City office is wrapping up a large combined-scope project in nearby Lehi at a new children’s hospital campus.

The Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital, Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Campus in Lehi opened for patient care on February 12, 2024. It includes an outpatient center, trauma center, medical office building, and a five-story, 66-bed, 486,000 SF Primary Children’s Hospital.

Flynn’s glazing department supplied and installed 64,200 SF of glass systems including a custom serpentine curtainwall at the main hospital entrance/feature wall with custom extended/ colored caps.

On the metal panel side, Flynn supplied 100,000 square feet of insulated metal panel assemblies and 25,000 SF of ACM wall cladding, and 58 total interior and exterior columns.

Flynn Seattle Delivers Despite Tight Deadlines

The UPS BFI Gateway Project represents a major investment by United Parcel Service in its package sorting and transshipment facility at the King County International Airport.

The facility’s peak operations are during the Thanksgiving to New Years shipping season, where there is a constant flow of aircraft and semi truck deliveries.

Flynn's work included single skin metal wall panels, translucent windows, and multiple types of roofing.

This project presented notable challenges and opportunities. The work was marked by an accelerated schedule. The largest challenge on the project involved the accelerated installation of the translucent canopy panels above the caster deck. Due to the holiday shipping rush, Flynn was tasked with completing our work in a 21 day window. We stacked the work area with a large amount of manpower and equipment. John Dunlap orchestrated all the movement of material, equipment, and employees so that the team did not lose focus. With proper planning and coordination, we were able to complete this work in 13 days. At no time did Flynn impact airfield or UPS operations.

Well done team! You delivered!

54 Football Fields?

No Problem!

by David Jory Cuthill

Nextstar Energy, a partnership between Stellantis and LG, is constructing a battery manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario.

Our main focuses are the Modular Building and the Cell Building. To illustrate the sheer size of this facility, the roofs cover an area equivalent to 54 football fields! Flynn Industrial and Thermal Design Insulation have partnered to handle the building envelope, incorporating Insulated Metal Panels and Dri-Design systems. The team has encountered various challenges, including weather, coordination, and congestion. Nevertheless, the team consistently exceeds the clients' expectations in terms of productivity, safety, quality, and schedule. With the teams outstanding performance as the best sales tool, we have been awarded 5 additional buildings. We recently completed 75% of the Panel Installation.

Flynn Regina Braves

Polar Vortex

Regina experienced a Polar vortex at the beginning of January for 2 weeks where the temperatures dropped to -55 degrees Celsius (-67°F) in most of the province!

Regina teams took this time to set up training in house and tune up our skills. We trained a group of 17 people in Flynn’s renowned FAST torch program & completed EPDM & TPO training that was led by our foremen Mike James & Daniel Cunliffe. We are happy to say that the training went as planned and we now have another seasoned group ready to hit the roof and put their skills to the test this summer.

Flynn SLC & TSC Give Ford a Makeover

Jubilee Ford was a renovation project that started in October 2022 and was completed in November 2023.

It was a 2-phase project that consisted of corrugated cladding on the main building and composite panel over 2 feature bands.

The large composite panel feature band had just over 180 panels and was all curved. With the help of TSC, we were able to determine that the structure was out upwards of 3” over a span of 8’ vertically. The PM presented the findings to the GC, and we agreed to use steel girts to level the structure. Once the panels were fabricated, they all went on just as planned according to TSC’s installation instructions. If we didn’t scan the area, there would have been countless hours lost trying to determine what the issue was and coming up with a solution.

The GC, Wright Construction, had nothing but good things to say about our crews that ran this project which is always good to hear about and good for future business! Thanks to everyone who worked on the project, including: Allan Barnhill, Frank Bond, Ryan Zirk, Alfredo Bravo, Aaron Whiteford, Michael Franks, Devin Schlosser, and Derek McMaster.

The Highest Green Roof in North America

by Jon Simpson

Flynn completed a massive multi-scope project in downtown Vancouver.

Over the past year, Flynn Vancouver has been working on a project with a green roof 403 feet high! Flynn's work included hot rubber applied roofing, unitized curtain wall, ACM panels, podium glazing and skylights.

The GC was impressed with the Flynn way of operating and said they would love to work with us again.

Congratulations to the high performing team on this great project!

Flamingo Rises Like a Phoenix!

For those in Kansas City that remember the old Flamingo Casino or even the Isle of Capri, if you’ve driven by there lately, you’ve likely noticed a completely new look.

With a modernized reskin of the casino’s riverboat-themed exterior and the new 35,000 SF retail and dining addition, Bally’s Casino has come to KC. Flynn Midwest contracted with WhitingTurner for this project for three scopes, Architectural Metal Panels, Roofing, and Glazing.

The architectural panel system consisted of more than 100,000 SF of Alfrex 4mm ACM cladding in 4 contrasting colors plus 12,000 SF of Berridge S-Deck panels to cap the corners of the new skin on the old boat. The show piece for the panel system has got to be the Copper Penny fins that reach for the sky.

Additionally, the project was made up of 2 different roofing scopes for us. First was the existing casino which was remodeled by adding 21,261 SF of TPO roof system with full tapered insulation and cover board. The second was the new part of the building which had 42,550 SF of TPO roof system over flat stock insulation and cover board. The unique situations were using white EPDM with rod stock as expansion joint materials tying into TPO flashings and the high wall flashing which had to be done off scaffolding.

The glass scope was definitely a mixed bag with 6500 SF of YKK – YCW 750 Xtra thermal curtain wall; 6000 SF of Solarban 60 Optigray high performance glass; 2000 SF of Custom 3M – Night Vision applied film; 1500 SF of Besam SL 500 bi-parting automatic all glass sliding doors; two 521 overhead garage doors at the patio entrance and one 670 overhead coiling entrance door at the main entrance of Chickie’s & Pete’s restaurant; and two angled slope glazed curtain walls – all glass was set overhead with a GM 2000 – 26 (heavy duty cup assembly) glazing telehandler. Overall, this complex project was a great success.

Women in Construction

Flynn Group of Companies has been and will always be a supporter of women in the construction industry. Flynn is a proud supporter of organizations like CAWIC (Canadian Association of Women in Construction) that help to facilitate the success of women in construction.

These are just some of the amazing women that are essential to Flynn’s success. Without these women in our industry, what we do would not be possible!

Teamwork at the Bellechasse Transport Centre

The project for the new Bellechasse Transport Center consists of a new transport center in the heart of Montreal.

This project has a total cost between 525 million and 600 million, close to several important transport routes, and planned to accommodate 300 new buses. This project aims to replace the current Saint-Denis transportation center built in 1967. This center will be innovative, functional and distinctive since it will be the first entirely underground transportation center in North America. In addition, in the long term, it will be equipped to accommodate a fleet of 100% electric buses.

Flynn Montreal is working on a mandate for the Société de Transport de Montréal for the design, manufacturing, supply and installation of curtain walls, aluminum doors, granite panels and Aluminum fins. The Transportation Center is a testament to collaboration and effective planning. The exemplary leadership of foreman Mathieu Larochelle helped foster a strong team spirit and safety practices. Additionally, coordination between the project management team and the client ensured a smooth process allowing installations to begin in May 2023 after a project delay of 2 years. The work is in progress and will be finalized in 2024.

Toronto Waterproofing Division Turns Five

It has been five years since the Toronto Waterproofing Division was formed.

It was built from the ground up - from zero jobs to a 30 person division. They have grown consistently over the years and have completed projects all over North America.

Real People. Real Opportunities.

The Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council (NSCSC) recently featured the story of Lawrence Pushie, an Apprentice Glazier with Flynn. They are proud of his journey, a testament to resiliency and success.

In 2022, Lawrence was referred by Jenny Boone with Pathways Cape Breton and accepted into the Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council's (NSCSC) Introduction to Glazing Program.

After graduation, Lawrence started working with Flynn Canada. He's worked at the Nova Scotia Community College relocation project, the New Waterford Hub and the new Cape Breton Cancer Centre. As an apprentice glazier, Lawerence is responsible for the preparation and installation of glass. When people look out of the windows in the new Cape Breton Cancer Centre with hope, or when students look through the windows of a new school, it was Lawerence who helped make that construction project come to life.

Lawrence made special mention of Shauna Graham, Training Coordinator with NSCSC, and Chris Bullman, Glazing Trainer with the International Association of Painters and Allied Trades DC39 for their dedication to helping him complete this training..

"He shows up every day with a positive attitude, just ready to learn and develop his trade. We are proud to see his progress and we are hopeful he'll be a Red Seal Glazier in the future." Coady Snair, Foreman - Flynn Canada

A Complex and Unique Roof

Flynn was approached in January of 2022 to quote this 33,000 SF job for Jen-Col Construction from Alberta.

The job was to be built in Moberly Lake BC on Native land for the Saultaeu First Nations which is about 12.5 hours drive North of Vancouver. My crew of shinglers are used to travelling far distances for us and once I saw the uniqueness of this job I just knew it had to be a Flynn Roof. The materials to be used were from Enviro shake and they had come up with a unique 4 colour design in a random pattern to suit the project.

I had a few calls with their technical rep to discuss the challenges that a design like this would pose. Since some of the shingles would be installed pretty much sideways, we had to install double layers of self sealing butyl peel and stick hand rolled to the deck. The shingles themselves had to be hand split every morning and thrown into a pile for random colour. The roof curved in 2 directions and in case that was not already hard enough, the owners wanted every shingle staggered up and down 1 inch. We can all agree that the end result was stunning!

Flynn Vancouver Presents the Speedwall Shop

Submitted by Romeo Tarrayo

That latest growth spurt in the Vancouver branch’s manufacturing operations is the new Speedwall Shop.

Speedwall is a factory-assembled modular exterior wall system that delivers quality and performance levels far beyond what is possible with on-site construction. Speedwall modules are completely self-framed, sealed, and insulated in Flynn’s manufacturing facility, with all windows, doors, and exterior cladding pre-installed.

Following the manufacture of a Speedwall module step by step, the Speedwall Shop starts by getting fed with insulated metal panels.

Meanwhile, the Glazing Shop fabricates the 6450 system grid that will become the backbone of each module. Once fabricated and checked, the extrusions are staged for assembly.

The unique Speedwall Shop tables can be pneumatically positioned vertically to allow team members to work on assembling, installing, and most importantly sealing the different components safely and more efficiently.

After installing the insulated panels, the jewelry and different infills like windows and louvers are assembled, and installed. There is no end in the type of materials that both architects and owners want to use in their projects. In the case of the first Flynn Speedwall project for the British Columbia Institute of Technology, aluminum fins and panels fabricated in Toronto with matching high-performance windows that are built in-house, are the jewelry of choice.

After the “walls” are fully completed, finished modules need to get hoisted on to custom made racks that are then placed securely on flat decks ready for storage then delivery.

Finally, when a run of walls are safely strapped to the racks and moved outside for staging, they are forklifted off the trailer and parked while waiting for delivery details to site.

It is worth mentioning that this system requires quite a diverse set of skills and expertise. This is why the Speedwall Shop is led by an expert Metals/Cladding Foreman and a very experienced and fellow expert Glazing Foreman. John Moxon joined the shop after years of site focus on metals. His Glazing counterpart, Kris Lemire also came from the field with several years of glazing and install experience. Both have participated in fabricating visual and performance mock-ups. Their team is mix of fabricators, glaziers, and cladders and those who have less experience are getting trained daily. The Vancouver shop has already learned and improved a lot working on Speedwall. There is always room for improvement, but the pride and energy put into Flynn's newest product is contagious!

Speedwall Development Update: Journey from Toronto to Vancouver

Submitted by Hugo Huynh & Joe Baz

The ongoing development of Speedwall necessitated collaboration between our Toronto and Vancouver branches. This joint effort involved meticulous planning, tireless effort, and true collaboration. Countless hours were dedicated to refining the production process for this innovative building solution at the new Flynn Manufacturing West facility.

Strategic Expansion to Vancouver

Speedwall's production was expanded to Vancouver as the city’s adoption of the BC Energy Step Code provided an ideal environment for innovation and sustainability. These initiatives perfectly aligned with Speedwall’s core values, making Vancouver a natural choice.

Custom Solutions for Efficiency

Several custom solutions were developed to enhance efficiency and streamline operations:

1. Custom Racks: Specially designed racks were created to store up to four frames efficiently. These racks serve dual purposes: storage within the facility and easy shipment to construction sites.

2. Specialized Trailer: A custom trailer was meticulously designed to transport frames from the production facility to the construction site. Remarkably, this trailer doesn’t require any special permits, making logistics smoother than ever.

3. Module Positioning Tables: Four custom tables were installed, allowing modules to be easily positioned flat or upright. This innovation significantly improved workflow during assembly.

4. Cutting Edge Machinery: A state of the art custom 5-axis cutting Onsrud machine capable of applying complex cuts, notches, mitres, and holes into large spanning panels up to 30’ in length.

Showcasing Excellence: The Vancouver Speedwall Mock-up

An achievement of this journey was the design, fabrication, assembly, and erection of the Vancouver Speedwall mock-up. This impressive structure features various façade treatments and infills, demonstrating the versatility of Speedwall:

• Corrugated Cladding: A rugged and industrial look.

• Extruded Aluminum: Sleek and modern.

• Porcelain Limestone: Timeless elegance.

• Honeycomb Aluminum: Lightweight and efficient.

• Passive House Compliant Windows and Doors: For thermal efficiency and comfort.

• Post-Applied Bolt-On Balcony: functional and aesthetic.

• 6450HP Unitized Curtainwall: Seamless integration with Speedwall. This mock-up served as a testament of innovation, sustainability, and practical solutions that define Speedwall. The team’s dedication and expertise made this remarkable journey possible.

A Real Team Effort Between Three Branches of Flynn

Flynn teams from across the country came together to reroof a long-term care community.

This past year we received a contract from Northern Health in BC to redo the 45,000 SF Stuart Nechako Care Center with a Double lock standing seam roof. The existing shingle roof had multiple severe leaks over the last little while and some burst water pipes in the attic due to freezing temperatures. The decision was made to turn this attic space into a heated space which meant a complete tear down including the 3 foot eaves back to the walls so we could redo the air barrier. New 3 foot eaves were built along with 6 layers of insulation totaling 9 inches. Cross strapping was installed with 16,000 - 10” x 5/16” stainless steel drag screws. All of this work was self-performed by our crews.

Hotels in Vanderhoof were impossible to get because all of the rooms were taken by firefighters fighting the fires in Northern BC so we had to think quick on our feet. We rented a large piece of land adjacent to the Care center that was owned by the City and we brought in 5 sleeping trailers, 3 kitchens with family rooms and a lunch room. Starlink internet was also provided and there were TV’s throughout.

One of the strengths of Flynn is the ability to source labour from all across the country. We had 6 people come over from Newfoundland as well as 6 from Winnipeg. Including our team from Vancouver we had rotating crews of up to 25 men at a time. Claude from Newfoundland took control of the job as a foreman and did a fantastic job motivating everybody even in minus 35 degree weather.

Flynn Completes UPEI’s Largest Building

Submitted by Kevin Turlo

Flynn Halifax’s Glazing division recently completed a landmark job on Prince Edward Island.

The new student residence building consists of 356 curtain wall punched windows and over 25,000 SF of stick-built curtain wall. This job was entirely managed out of the Halifax branch and our local superhero crews commuted over the bridge weekly to get this job done ahead of schedule for the University. The building was designed by A4 Architects out of Moncton, N.B. and it is truly a unique building in terms of its footprint and exterior sight lines. Flynn did such an impressive job on the glazing that the university recently awarded us another large contract on campus which is currently in the design phase! A big thanks to our local suppliers, especially Anotec (curtain wall) and Prelco (glass).

Thank you to our local Flynn family for making this project a massive success. We’re all looking forward to the next one!

Recognition for Work

Submitted by Neil Winters

This elementary school class was grateful for Flynn's roof repair.

Thank you to the crew that attended the Birtle Elementary School repairs/leaks in April. The children were very appreciative of the work completed by the crew and wrote this wonderful note. As you can see from the drawing, they did a great job! The note made the crew's day and the team in the office as well.

In September of last year, we held our annual Leadership and Shareholders Conference with the theme “Our Culture is our Sustainable Competitive Advantage”. We had some very meaningful discussions about what makes Flynn who we are, and agreed on some future cultural aspirations so that we can continue to grow and evolve. But the truth is, maintaining and developing culture takes all of us. So we knew that we needed to cascade these messages to the entire company. When we take our collective values from the unconscious to the conscious, we can be accountable for our actions in everything that we choose to do, and choose not to do, every single day.

Keeping that in mind, we have started rolling out companywide culture initiatives. Those of us in the office have been attending “Culture Workshops” with our teams, discussing what Flynn’s culture looks like, what it means to be a part of the Flynn Family, and our vision and mission statement. Soon, we will be introducing a similar conversation in a special Toolbox Talk, which is accompanied by a culture cartoon.

In the meanwhile, here is a sneak peek at what we will be talking about...

Flynn Family

Several years ago during safety meetings that we held across the company, we had some very interesting conversations about what makes Flynn who we are, and our collective values. What we found was that a few themes kept coming up consistently:

• Flynn – This is our brand and we’re proud to represent it.

• Family – Our workplace should be a place where everyone wants to be… One that’s safe, fun, secure, and where we CARE about and TRUST each other.

• Winning – We are proud to be an industry leading company. We win when customers recognize that we are the best company to deal with, because we have the best people that get the job done right first time. We win when we have the best training, tools and support systems. We win when we work together with the same goals and values. We win when we are recognized as the best place to work in our industry.

• Together – Flynn is made up of many different teams, that all work together and support each other every day. Whether it’s teams at the crew level, in the office, or within shared service, we as a company are really the connection of many teams, in one big value creation chain, driven by the same values.

We came up with the phrase “Flynn Family Winning Together” to capture these sentiments. This slogan will continue to serve as a reminder of our fundamental culture and values.

Vision and Mission

We wanted Flynn’s vision and mission statement to capture our core cultural values and beliefs, and so we have introduced Flynn’s new mission and vision statement:

We are proud of making a difference by building a bright future for our employees, customers and communities by what we all do, and how we all do it, everyday.

So what does all of that really mean?

• We – This is about all of us – unified. We are one company, made up of many teams pulling in the same direction.

• Proud of making a difference – We all want to make a positive impact on the world, where our work has purpose and meaning.

• By building a bright future – This has double meaning. We build physical things, and we are building our people! And we’re also building relationships with customers and our people in our communities!

• Future – We are forward looking and positive. What we do and what we build will stand the test of time.

• For our employees, customers and communities – We make a difference working for our main stakeholders, constantly meeting and exceeding their expectations.

• What we all do – We all add value to our company, and each other. Even though what we each do is very different, it is all important and is about supporting each other.

• How we all do it – This speaks to doing the right things the right way. Being honest and trustworthy, and delivering on our promises to our Stakeholders is part of the Flynn Way.

• Every day – Means we are going to be consistent. We do a great job EVERY TIME, and we can be trusted to deliver to our Stakeholders.

Overall, it is hard to capture everything that makes up our unique culture, because it is so many different things. But it is important to talk about.

We all have the responsibility to ensure that our culture is in great shape, and that we build on it as we grow, evolve, and adapt to ever changing conditions.

Stay posted for more to come on culture this year!

Spring District Block 13: A Flynn Total Building Envelope

More than a decade ago, the Spring District was conceived as a new center for business in Bellevue, Washington.

Today the Spring District is materializing as an exemplar of mixed-use neighborhoods, with business offices, apartment residences, retails spaces and eateries. Block 13 is the District's newest completed commercial building and represents a Flynn total building envelope.

Flynn’s influence on this enclosure starts at the roof, ends at the podium, and spans most every place in between. Flynn scopes on this project include: SBS roofing systems on the main roof, as well as canopies; hot rubber waterproofing, including extensive PMMA; a single-skin screen wall system; insulated wall panels on penthouses; and aluminum plate architectural panels. Additionally, Flynn Manufacturing produced Block 13's designdefining curtain wall system.

Roofing foreman Rodger Fairbanks, and roofing lead Matt Simpson, provided exceptional customer service through rigorous QA/QC processes during the SBS installation. Despite a logistically challenging interface with curtain wall and green roof subcontractors, Fairbanks’ team completed the roof in an even shorter duration than promised.

Samuel Espinoza, Flynn waterproofing foreman, answered the call on a building section with a particularly challenging safety component. His team expertly installed hot rubber on a third story, 2-foot-wide ledge which ran the entire length of the 250foot building.

Metal Foreman Ed Clevidence was responsible for installing Morin W-12 perforated panels as a screen wall, while foreman Brandon Madrid encased penthouses in Morin C-29 panels. These metals teams achieved record-setting production rates, no safety incidents, and virtually no punch list.

Flynn is proud our total building envelope is the newest showpiece in the most up-and-coming neighborhood of the Puget Sound Region’s East Side.

Christmas Festivities in Calgary

Flynn Calgary had multiple events to celebrate Christmas.

They held a Christmas brunch, where managers cooked food for the office and field staff. A family Christmas party was well attended and included ordering toys to hand out to children of staff. Also, they exchanged gifts at their annual office secret Santa.

Phoenix Zoo Christmas

Flynn Phoenix also had a very successful end of year Christmas party with all our employees at the PHX Zoo.

The Phoenix branch visited the zoo during their annual ZooLights event, with almost 4 million lights and hundreds of displays.

Victoria Life Savers

On January 10th 2024 on the way home from a service call in Ucuelet, B.C., Brent Heyd and Ken Kory stepped up to assist on the scene of an accident.

Ahead of them it appeared as though a person had been ejected from a moving vehicle. Brent used the hazard lights and positioned the van in such a way as to protect the scene and stop traffic and Ken proceeded to use the equipment and training to control the traffic. They worked to organize the efforts of other good Samaritans, providing direction for traffic control and communications with emergency services.

Once the scene was safe they used the blankets and first aid supplies from the service van to assess and support the victim until paramedics arrived. The conscious victim, suffering from obvious head trauma and a broken ankle was conscious and in a great deal of physical and emotional shock and pain. Brent and Ken assisted her to the side of the highway, were they stayed and maintained physical and emotional support until paramedics arrived. Brent expressed gratitude that the Flynn van was stocked with all the necessary equipment needed to handle such an ordeal, and that they had the proper training through Flynn to be an asset in a time of such stress and chaos. In Brent’s words: “It really highlights how we at Flynn consider safety a "behavior" rather than a choice, because I know any one of us would have done the same thing in that moment. Hug your loved ones.”

Learning How to Manage Mental Health and Handle Addictions

In the month of December in Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, and Brandon we brought in a mental health and addictions speaker for our workforce.

Brad Siroski discussed his own challenges with mental health and addictions. He gave the workers some information on how they can access support. He also mentioned how his employers have handled his addiction issues and what they did (right or wrong), and how companies should proceed with these types of issues. Brad was able to stick around after and speak with some individuals. The workers enjoyed the presentation, and we received positive feedback from both Brad and our workforce.

Western U.S. Annual Branch Safety Leader Awards

Each month the JHSC votes on a monthly branch safety leader.

This is based off field leadership recommendations and management observations for field/manufacturing employees who go above and beyond, and continuously demonstrate the “Flynn Way”. We emphasize this achievement by giving the safety leaders recognition and a Flynn Promo code card. At the end of the year the committee votes on an annual branch safety leader from the pool of monthly leaders. These are pictures of 2023 annual branch safety leaders.

OSHA Stand Down

OSHA National Fall Protection Stand Down week was May 6-10.

It's purpose is to encourage safety discussions to prevent falls in Construction. Falls are the leading cause of death in construction and are preventable. It's important to take a few moments each day to have discussions with your crews to focus on fall protection and the importance of inspecting our gear.

These are photos of some of our crews that participated this year.

Top 10 Flynn Coaches Attend Coaches Conference in Cancun, Mexico

The Coaches Conference is a chance to give back to our top coaches who go the extra mile with consistency and dedication to the Coaching program.

Coaches are selected based on a variety of criteria that sums up a devoted Coach who is committed to the development of their Coachees and the future of the next generation at Flynn. The three-day conference was held in Cancun, at the Andaz Mayakoba Resort. There, the Coaches enjoyed deep-sea fishing, golfing, jet skiing, and other exciting activities.

On the first day of the conference, the Coaches got together for some friendly competition on the tennis court, followed by dodge-ball style team archery. The group then enjoyed the beautiful weather on the beach before getting ready to play golf on the El Camaleón PGA Tour golf course. It may have rained that afternoon on the green, but that didn’t stop anyone from having a good time!

The second day of the conference brought the Coaches out on the water for some deep-sea fishing. The waters were rough, but our determined Coaches managed to reel in a catch or two. The rest of the afternoon was spent beach side on the resort jet skiing. The trip ended with a delicious dinner by the water, with some great live music!

We are excited to share that the second annual Coaches Conference was a huge success! Join us in congratulating our top 10 Coaches of 2023, Paul Jones, Nathan Duchin, Julian Poblete, Scott Hoostie, Tait Mercredi, Michael Bigsby, José Carvalho, Dave D'Avolio, David Diamond, and Ricardo Carbajal Chávez.

Coaching Reward and Recognition

The Coaching App is an in-house app used to pair New Hires on the field (aka coachees) with an experienced coach on the crew, to help them develop. Both coaches and coachees have the chance to receive company-wide recognition to highlight their efforts in coaching. So, let’s get in the game and look at all the ways they can win!

First up, we have Get Caught Coaching, which are individual rewards that take place all throughout the year. Coaches and coachees are selected via a draw and can win Flynn Credits for their activity in the coaching app at any given time.

To recognize our branches, we have The Supper Bowl. The Supper Bowl takes place multiple times a year and highlights our branches who have engaged coaches and coachees producing consistent, accurate and high-quality activity in the app. The winning branch is selected via a draw of all our performing branches, and is treated to a celebration lunch or dinner sponsored by the Learning and Development Team. They will also receive a banner to display proudly at their branch with the win recorded for that period.

We also recognize dedication to the Coaching Program with Year-End Awards. These awards similarly look at consistency, accuracy and quality when it comes to ratings and huddles in the app. The major difference with this award is the whole year is taken into consideration when reviewing performance in the app for our coaches, coachees and branches.

Check out our Coaching Hall of Fame on www.flynncoaching.com for more information and to see all our current and past winners!

Volunteering at Okotoks Food Bank

On January 23, a few Calgary office employees had the amazing opportunity to volunteer at the Okotoks Food Bank.

In 3 hours, we were able to help them sort through about 8-10 big boxes of non-perishable foods items. They were so appreciative and we too were grateful for the experience.

Flynn supports local hockey team in Halifax’s “Parade of lights”.

It may have been a chilly evening in Halifax, but the lighted floats put together by local groups and teams warmed every heart in the crowd.

This year, Halifax branch graciously donated our big 5 tonne truck to be the float for local hockey team “Sackville Flyers U11 AA”. The team decorated the float with over 5000 lights, a speaker system, Christmas tree, homemade scoreboard and more! A very special thank you to Flynn’s driver Mr. Kevin Ingram who donated his unpaid time to help decorate and drive our kids around for the parade! All together it was a great success and will become an annual event!

Flynn Volunteer day at L ‘Arche Tahoma Hope

Farms

Submitted by Erin Tasch

Our Seattle office spent time, equipment and supplies to help support this amazing organization.

L’Arche is a national organization that works to advance the rights and inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They work to help people with disabilities have a sense of belonging, so they can thrive.

Flynn helped with building new garden beds and doors, repairing louvers, removing trash, and pressure washed a greenhouse. Employees even brought family and friends to help out and help get them ready for spring planting!

We plan to do many more events as there are so many things this community needs help with. L ‘Arche has a few houses around the community and this farm helps with costs in maintaining the houses that are so important for our communities to have. They sell flowers, vegetables, they have bees for honey and wax to make candles, hens for eggs and about 8 roosters they need to find homes for. Unfortunately, they are in danger of losing one of the houses because of maintenance costs. As we are all aware the need for housing and communities for our developmentally disabled community is huge. We want to rally the troops to help save what we can and get this farm fixed up, and safe. This would allow them to generate income for this amazing group of residents. I know there are many GC’s that we work with that may be willing to help save this community. Let’s see how many we can get to work with us to make this happen!

Attended supporting Flynn: Terry Ard – Branch Manager, Chris Mann – Sheet Metal PM, Matt Pierce – Roofing Operations Manager, Joe Wand - Senior Roofing Estimator, Jeremie Picard – Roofing PM, Patrick Carter – Roofing PM, LaTanya Scott – Blue Chip Roofing (Subcontractor), James Scott – Blue Chip Roofing (Subcontractor)
