PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The Flynn Flash Returns Hello everyone, You may have noticed that it’s been a while since you received a copy of the Flynn Flash. Historically, we prepare a Flash every 3 months or so, but we put the Flash on pause due to COVID and have been using that time to discuss the future direction of the magazine in a post COVID world. Not only to figure out how we could work around the pandemic but how we could also improve the Flash at the same time. The previous Flash format was built around each branch submitting two to three projects with crew pictures. But, in the future, we are encouraging everyone to submit more stories that capture the Flynn Way in action. Stories about our people rising to the occasion, supporting their team, or providing innovative solutions. That way we are not limited to mostly project focused stories and the articles don’t need to be grouped by branch. This doesn’t mean we stop showing off the projects we are working on, it just means more focus on the people that make things happen every day. You’ll also notice that the Flash is a bit lighter than what you are used to. This was done for two reasons. Firstly, we are changing the focus of what gets published. Most content that is submitted that does not end up in the Flash will be posted on FlynnCrew.com and our social media channels. Secondly, the old format of one to two pages for each branch just isn’t sustainable. We are a growing company and in the last three years the Flash also grew from 50 to 80 pages. Since we intend to keep growing, we needed to revise the format or in the next few years it would have topped 100 pages! What’s most important is that the Flash continue to capture the Flynn story as it gets told. It lets us all take a breather and catch up on what everyone else is up to in the bigger Flynn Family. For example, did you know that in Phoenix we are working on one of the largest construction sites in North America (page 15). Or that Gary Stride from Victoria recently raised money for charity by performing a midnight scuba dive (page 18). How about that we recently had two new additions to our Flynn Family? Welcome to all our new readers from the former AARA Construction and Noorda BEC! Its great to have you on board and you can read more about them on page 24-25. We hope you enjoy the new format. If you have any feedback, we are putting a survey link on the home page of FlynnCrew.com. Let us know your thoughts and we can consider them all for future Flash editions. The Flash remains available in English, French and Spanish. If you’d prefer a different language to what you received, just ask your branch administrator. We will be sending out extra copies. So, give it a read. Let us know what you think, and as always stay safe out there.

Toronto Teams Working Diligently on Michael Garron Hospital Submitted by Aimee Eden

The Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre at the Michael Garron Hospital will feature 218 medical and surgical beds, more accessible outpatient programs and modern infrastructure that will accommodate new technology. It will also include improved infection control by increasing the number of single rooms and units that can be converted to isolate patients in case of an outbreak. The scope of the project includes 63,000 SF of panels, 17,000 SF of metal siding and 9,000 SF of metal roof. The entire project has been quite difficult due to the importance of the project and the COVID protocols. The work on the hospital is critical to our

efforts against COVID and the safety measures are strict. There is an onsite testing center offering testing to any worker with a 24-36 hour turn around. Plus, there is mandatory testing twice a week for all workers. There is no doubt that our frontline workers are heroes and deserving of recognition during this very difficult time. But without the support of our hardworking crews building and maintaining these medical facilities the situation would be much worse. That is why we wanted to ensure they get this recognition for their contribution in the effort against COVID. Thank you to our crews from everyone at Flynn, we all greatly appreciate it.

Unique Hospital Roof Needs Unique Solution Submitted by Chris Wilmink

The British Columbia Women’s and Children Hospital required a new addition that had a uniquely designed curved roof. This metal roof had a complex wall panel layout that transitioned around multiple elevations with a slanted reveal pattern. To create the desired effect the Vancouver cladding division needed to apply curved panels that measured 110 feet long.

spreader bar is one-of-a-kind and was designed to be modified to lift material from 60 to 120 feet long. Another concern was the intricate design of the panels that required pre-bending before shipment to the site. But with the assistance of TSC’s laser scanning, the Flynn team was able to design each panel with minimal site alterations. When the project was finally completed there were very few “typical panels” being used on this project at all due to its slanted design.

Moving panels always requires forethought but due to the unusual size of the panels the team would have to innovate. To move the panels, they needed to use a specialized spreader bar introduced to the team by Dan Geddes, Business Development Manager. This

Combined Flynn Effort Completes Medical Facility Codenamed Project FIRE Submitted by Michael Petch

The Cambridge branch was rewarded with the roofing scope for the massive medical supply facility codenamed Project FIRE. The nearly six hundred thousand SF warehouse would be a huge undertaking for any one Flynn branch. But Cambridge was able to call on the support of Toronto, Hamilton and the OPEX team to help get the job done. At the peak of labour there were 52 crew members on site from Hamilton, Toronto, and Cambridge. Included in the roofing scope was 640 skylights and about 50 other curbs (support structures for fans and ventilators). “Project FIRE was a one in ten-year kind of project for our region. The extraordinary number of curbs on this project presented the biggest challenge in all stages – estimating, planning, loading, installation, and quality control/wrap up,” said Michael Petch, Branch Manager of Cambridge. “But our team absolutely knocked this out of the park by going to great lengths in pre-construction planning. We involved the OPEX team with our crews, managed the labour and productivity, and had a meticulous QC program during and post installation. We absolutely exceeded the expectations of the GC, who quickly became an ally in accelerating the other related subtrades ahead of us.” “It cannot be stressed enough the importance of making use of the size and resources that Flynn has,” said Blaine Braun, Branch Manager of Hamilton. “Our ability to share our crews is one of the greatest strengths we have. It was a great experience to help Cambridge out and score another win for Flynn.”

24 Visitation Rooms Completed Quickly to Allow Family Visits Submitted by Ashley Quiering

When the Flynn Winnipeg team was called on to help complete work on multiple Personal Care Home’s (PCL) they rose to the challenge. The project was to help create well-ventilated and isolated visitation rooms within the PCLs so family members could visit their loved ones over the holidays. It has been an incredibly difficult year, and this was an important goal anyone can appreciate. It took the entire team working together but they managed to reach their goal. Appreciation goes out to estimating (Chris Forde), both PMs (Chrisol Capuno and Kathy McNeill) and project coordinators (Carlene Trembath and Matthew MacPherson). Plus, the entire drafting team (Tim Si, Junnell Sulit and Greg Cruz) who completed 13 site drawings in six days. Also thank you to the Winnipeg fabrication team who worked very hard to meet tight deadlines and to the installers who worked on the sites. Despite the challenges these sites have experienced, everyone persevered and worked towards getting the jobs done as quickly as possible.

School Reroofs Have Been our Bread and Butter Submitted by Chris MacNeil

School boards throughout North America have been using school closures as an opportunity to allow much needed reroofs or new construction. This has created an increase in school tenders and has allowed schools to become the ‘bread and butter’ for many branches. Flynn Halifax is no exception as they just recently completed a new school slated to open in Fall 2021. JL Ilsley is a multi-scope project involving both metals and roofing. Travis Barrett, Metals Foreman and Lewis Gale, Roofing Field Supervisor have done an excellent job, and both have stepped up in a big way to ensure our workers are safe on site.

Hospital Tower Pixelization Submitted by Calvin Cheng

Flynn Vancouver has partnered with EllisDon to construct the Royal Inland Hospital Patient Care Tower. This is two-phased project that consists of a new, nine-storey patient care tower as well as significant renovations to the existing emergency department, pediatrics, post-anesthetic recovery unit, and morgue. The new tower is approximately 27,000 SF and will be constructed on the existing Royal Inland Hospital campus. As you can see in the 3D rendering of the complete structure, the metals team is creating a unique pixelation effect with different coloured panels. To pull this off they will be working with our very own TSC to 3D scan and design the panels. This part of the scope will span 27,000 SF and will look fantastic when it’s done. The roofing installation is a joint venture between our Vancouver and Kelowna branches and has proved challenging due to multiple trades requiring access to the areas where Flynn crews are installing roofing. But there is strong communication between all parties and work is moving smoothly. As of right now work is slated to be completed by Summer 2021. Special thanks to our field teams for your hard work, and to Metals Foreman Kevin Timms, whose hard work is keeping the project on the right track.

Waterproofing Scope Takes off in Ottawa Submitted by Dan Dufort

The Ottawa branch is working on the waterproofing scope for the condo development at 1451 Wellington. Waterproofing is a scope that Flynn has just recently begun to adopt but it has quickly spread to multiple branches. The scope includes 200,000 SF of blindside waterproofing for the four level below grade parking garage. Blindside waterproofing is when waterproofing is applied before the foundation and foundation wall are in place. This is usually the go-to method in urban centers where it is not feasible to excavate around the foundation walls or maneuver heavy equipment. The parking garage took 1,500 man-hours to complete but that was no problem for our crew.

Massive New Construction Job Undertaken by Kansas City & Minneapolis Submitted by Terry Ard

This new Walmart distribution center needed a 1.8 million SF roof, which required a crew of 4060 workers hitting an average of 50,000 SF a day. On average the team received around 8 to 10 truckloads of material a day just to keep on with installation. Achieving the manpower needed to pull off this job was the first challenge. Luckily, we have our friends at the nearby Flynn Minneapolis branch and HR was able to recruit the rest needed. The next challenge was managing this many crews. Flynn Midwest had not done a roofing project of this size and a lot of coordination at the jobsite was needed. A meeting was held with the Project Manager, Tammy Mauck, General Superintendents, Doug Sutton and Mike Mauck, the Job Superintendents, John Aeberhard, Charlie Holloway, Chris Zearley, and the Foreman, Zack Wisdom on what would be the best way to meet our labor goals for the project.

It was decided that our crews would be broken out into four teams. Two teams for each layer of insulation, one team for the layout of the crickets and detailing and one team for the installation of the TPO. Each team would have a leader and would be responsible for that crew and reporting to the job superintendents and foremen. OPEX was also able to lend a hand when it came to the insulation installation. Instead of using sandbags to weigh down the insulation, Mike Shannon, Equipment Manager and Mike Pierce, Senior Advisor at OPEX suggested the use of weighted cones. Weighted cones are easier to pick up and are safer for our crews to use. The project was a massive undertaking and required skillful forethought and constant communication. On their best day the team hit more than 70,000 SF in one day! Thank you to the entire team that made it happen.

How Early Automobiles Inspired a Library Submitted by Shelbie McDiffett

The East Arlington Library is a 47, 249 SF library and recreation facility that our DFW team was awarded the metals scope on. The intertwining of curved and angular elements was inspired by the architecture and automotive designs of the 1950’s. While this creates an incredibly cool looking final product, it was up to our team to figure out how to apply the panels to help create the effect. By using Flynn’s scanning capabilities through TSC the DFW team was able to produce the design the client was looking for. In fact, since this technology was new to many in DFW it proved a good time to hold “Lunch & Learns” and explain the benefits of 3D scanning. The actual application of the panels took close coordination to ensure the substrate was manageable with the curvature of the building. But due to careful initial planning the project went smoothly and finished on time.

Extreme Cold Won’t Stop Our Crews Submitted by Craig Kucher

Our crews in Saskatoon are used to unpleasant winters and this winter was no exception. While they were working on Miksiw School, Canoe Lake First Nation Saskatchewan they had to brave temperatures of -40 °C/ -40 °F. But our crews know how to layer properly, and they got to work completing the metals and roofing scope which included

replacing and resealing the EPDM liner and installing panels. Aside from the weather, the work went smoothly, and the GC commended the quality of their workmanship. The project turned out so well that the team managed to pick up substantial extras on the roof and the walls. Its good to see quality craftsmanship recognized and in demand.

Jarrod Shaw Receives Leadership Excellence Award for Work on Vancouver Airport Submitted by Jose Goncalves

The Flynn Vancouver team has completed the Vancouver Airport – Pier D International Terminal expansion with PCL. The project was an impressive success due to the team’s commitment to their partnership with both PCL and the other trades on site. PCL even recognized Jarrod Shaw, Lead Project Manager with a Leadership Excellence Award for his excellent work on Pier D.

“The Vancouver Airport was a massive multi-million undertaking that was made possible due to our team’s commitment to the four P’s, in particular the importance of partnerships,” said Jarrod Shaw “We fostered a strong relationship with the PCL team at all levels, alongside the other trades on site. This allowed us to easily find constructive solutions for everyone when we encounter any roadblocks. This award recognizes the hard work of the entire Vancouver team who navigated this challenging project with impressive finesse.” Jarrod began his career at Flynn working as a fabricator in the trim shop before moving to the office as an architectural products coordinator, and later being promoted to project manager. We look forward to watching his career as it continues to grow.

Renovating an Old Giant Submitted by Jim McDougall

Stephen Ave. Place is a 42-storey building that was built in Calgary in 1976 and is one of the few skyscrapers in Calgary’s skyline. But at nearly 50 years old, the building was in a dire need of a facelift. The Calgary team was awarded the roofing, metals, glazing, and waterproofing for the job, making it truly a total building envelope. The building was gutted to accommodate a rooftop restaurant and the ground floor was paved away for an assortment of retailers. While this is not the biggest job the Calgary branch has faced, there were many challenges working on a 500-foot building. The reroofing scope was complex and offered many challenges. There was not only the main roof to contend with but also 16 smaller roofs, which were very difficult to access and required the use of a swing stage to use as a roofing guardrail system. Dan Rayner, Roofing Superintendent and Paul Jones, Foreman did an excellent job on the reroof scope. The podium refurbishment formed the bulk of work for Flynn’s glazing and metals crews. The work was managed in Calgary by Keith Smith, Project Manager and supported in Edmonton by Vijay Khobragade, Project Manager making this a combined Alberta project. The glazing crew installed over 17,000 SF of glass (curtain wall, folding doors, revolving doors, mirrors, railings), Colin Swirles, Construction Manager and Martin Croft, Superintendent and the rest of the glazing team did a great job. In metals, Richard White, Construction Manager and Andrew Warnick, Foreman and crew installed a combination of ACM, longboard, FC panel and perforated panel (art wall features) totaling just over 23,000 SF. The project was a great success and the customer was extremely happy with Flynn’s professional approach and the commitment to getting a quality result.

Advanced Manufacturing Plant Requires Strict Security Submitted by Onnie Diaz

The first thing our Phoenix crew learned on site, is that security on the Intel – Fab 42 is no joke. They allowed no pictures on site and if you are caught taking a picture you are not allowed to return. The only time they allowed Flynn to take photos on site was with an Intel camera, followed by an Intel escort and then an Intel review of the photos. Anyone even going on the site needed to attend a one-week classroom training that covered both safety and security standards.

Flynn Phoenix was awarded a multi-scope contract for both the roofing and panel work for over the course of a year. The strict security and the immense size of the project created a few logistical obstacles, but the team had a plan and the project moved smoothly. Blake Merrick, Project Director oversaw the first half of the project and James Rosetti, Project Manager saw it to completion.

Performance Mock-ups: Taking a Facade for a Test Drive Submitted by Hugo Huynh

For the past year the Flynn Facades team has been working diligently to design, manufacture and assemble a large-scale 2 storey 30’ x 30’ Performance Mock-up (PMU) that represents an actual section of the final building. 1090 West Pender is a Unitized Curtain wall project that Flynn Facades is working with General Contractor, Graham Construction. The building comprises of over 3,000 individual Flynn curtain wall modules, will stand 33 storeys tall, and is scheduled for installation in September 2021. The PMU is currently undergoing a series of tests at an outdoor facility in Vancouver, BC. It will be subjected to air, static water, dynamic water, inter-story drift, and thermal cycling.

Erecting and conducting tests on PMUs has many benefits; a primary benefit being to both verify and improve our construction details. Should the PMU fail, we are able to investigate and assess our details relative to the built condition and improve our design. Congratulations to the hardworking team making it possible. Flynn Manufacturing: Raising Our Game and Frames Submitted by John Mplias

space of six feet for our team to work in. To raise (and hold) an 1,800 pound frame in the air and allow team members to work safely and efficiently underneath it, a hoist typically used for lifting cars was incorporated into the glazing lines.

The glazing team needed safe and unrestricted access to the interior side of the frame so they could apply a silicone seal across the full width. But there was the small problem of the frame weighing 1,800 pounds.

With the skills of our maintenance team, the hoists were fitted with sections of the glazing rail line – allowing a single operator to seamlessly handle the frame throughout the entire process.

Several innovative options were tested and reviewed by key members of the design, tech services and manufacturing teams. In the end the best solution was to raise the frame and create a

Gary Stride Going Above and Beyond for Flynn & the Community Submitted by Jerry Horne

When Gary started out as a tradesman with Flynn it was obvious from day one that he had a passion for doing things the “right way” and that included safety. He excels at making the employees feel safe and was instrumental in Victoria winning the prestigious Don Flynn Safety Award. The information he delivers and the care in which he delivers it has saved lives. This commitment to safety goes beyond his work at Flynn. Gary is very involved in charitable works within the community. He volunteers with HeroWorks Society which provides renovation services to charities in need. HeroWorks has recognized his outstanding commitment to the charity by awarding him with the 2018 Golden Hammer. “Gary was chosen because he was an outstanding volunteer and an amazing Safety Leader. He led by example, strictly adhering to health and safety protocol at all times,” said Linda Morrison, Operations Manager from HeroWorks. “He always had a plan and was ready to execute it and then use the plan to help us develop/ improve safety orientation.”

“Gary’s passion for doing things the right way pushes him to ensure a top-quality environment while at Flynn and when volunteering,” HeroWorks’ most recent project was a nearby Salvation Army branch which needed a newly constructed kitchen and a dormitory to offer 20 more beds. To help raise funds for this Gary undertook a night dive. The night dive was conducted on New Year’s Eve and involved a 2,500-foot scuba swim back to shore 100 feet under the surface. It was timed out that Gary and his team would start 10 minutes before midnight and surface in the new year. They raised $1,000 towards HeroWorks while having a truly unique experience. “Gary’s passion for doing things the right way pushes him to ensure a top-quality environment while at Flynn and when volunteering,” said Dave Flint, BC Regional Manager. “I speak for all of us at Flynn that his dedication to safety and willingness to give back deserve some recognition and thanks.”

Flynn Family Winning Together Stories Submitted by Pascal Vanasse

The Flynn Family wins together by supporting each other like a family should. Flynn Montréal wanted to call attention to two examples of employees supporting each other. Richard Poirier has been with Flynn for over 20 years working in glass manufacturing and his passion has passed onto to his daughter. At a very young age Janypier Poirier had an interest in her father’s work and would often participate when she got a chance. Just recently a job opportunity arose in the factory and she took it on. Now there are two generations of Poiriers working side by side while sharing the same passion. Its great to see a new hire supported and encouraged while they develop their career at Flynn.

But this story does not only apply to family. Jean-Francois Richard was hired in 2008 as part of an integration program for the differently-abled. Since he was hired, he has been a diligent and responsible employee. Due to his limitation every day can be a challenge. But with a little help from his friends, such as Brian Jones, he manages just fine. At the end of the day providing a helping hand to our team is how we win together. COVER STORY The Flynn Coaching Program Adapts and Grows During 2020 The Flynn Coaching Program focuses on providing our rookies with a “soft landing” in Flynn by matching them with coaches that train and support them through their first few months with us. This coach support for our rookies builds a solid foundation for their career at Flynn and helps us grow our talent effectively from within. Despite the COVID related stresses and restrictions over the past year the Coaching Program has only grown stronger thanks to the passion and commitment of our coaches and rookies. Coach of the Year: Erik Vasquez Jimenez This year we’d like to especially recognize the consistent efforts of Erik Vasquez Jimenez from the Saskatoon branch who was selected as our top coach of 2020. Erik has proven to be an outstanding coach who is highly respected and valued by his rookies. It’s no surprise Erik is from the Saskatoon branch since the branch has also just won the quarterly Supper Bowl (Branch team award) and has an impressive lineup of active coaches like Adam George, Justin Bomas, Brandon Lizotte, Evan Benoit and Siggy Morin Duarte.

I enjoy being a coach because I can see my rookie’s improvement and watch them grow in their career,” said Erik Vasquez Jimenez. “The coaching app has proven to be a great way to keep track of my rookies and the content in the app helps them with the procedures on site” The coaching app has proven to be an invaluable digital support tool for keeping our coaches and rookies connected during COVID. To keep the program’s momentum going forward, we needed to bring the in-class training (Flynn University for Frontline Coaches) into the digital world. FUFC lite is a 3-hour version of our traditional FUFC program, with a focus on some of the key learnings essential to being an effective coach. The sessions are conducted over virtual meetings with interactive tools to help keep attendees engaged.

But the coaches are only half of the program and our rookies also need credit for making great strides in improving their game. This year we are recognizing six of our rookies for outstanding improvement in 2020, Riley Irwin, Drake Green, Samuel Loch, Devon Riley Duchrame, Manuel Amaya Nieto and Waheed Asghar. Their desire to learn and improve themselves has led to an impressive improvement in their onsite performance. They are well on their way to a successful career in Flynn. “This whole program of learning through the app is indeed a great initiative,” said Waheed Asghar. “I am indebted to my coach for his coaching, sheer commitment, knowledge base, and problem-solving abilities. He truly is a phenomenal guy.” Our coaches are volunteers who are committed to making a difference every day and actively demonstrate Flynn’s “Winning Together” attitude. That way our rookies start their career with firsthand experience of our culture. This is the best method of passing on our knowledge and experience to the next generation and keeping Flynn strong for another 40 years and beyond. Its a critical program and despite a very difficult year our coaches and rookies have shown that they truly have the “Right Stuff”!

Top Huddler Kenny Tran has shown us that he knows a thing or two about huddling! By consistently meeting and huddling with his rookies, Kenny has created a healthy flow of communication ensuring his rookies know what they’re doing and have a space to ask questions. His open communication is a source of motivation and feedback for his rookies Waheed, Gurvinder, and Kevin. Kenny works out of the Vancouver branch and has been a coach since early 2020. In his first year as a coach, he has shown an incredible dedication to his rookies and the Coaching Program. This year Kenny completed over 250 huddles with his rookies and has helped the Vancouver team become a coaching powerhouse. This is someone who really cares about his rookies’ learning!

Supper Bowl Congratulations to our Supper Bowl winner, Saskatoon! The Supper Bowl is awarded to a Flynn branch whose coaches and rookies demonstrate consistent coaching activity. Our Supper Bowl winners are those that have significant ratings and huddles, while also showing dedication to the Coaching Program and their rookies. Saskatoon checked off all the boxes and have earned the prestigious Supper Bowl! This means they have earned a championship banner for their branch, dinner for all of the active coaches, and most importantly, those highly coveted bragging rights! Flynn Facades Safety Bali Kilowa Receives Life Award – Marian Kukhar Saver Award Submitted by Ryan Simich

Bali Kilowa from the Winnipeg branch was returning to site after lunch when he saw a woman collapse and start having seizures. Without hesitating he immediately called 911 and was able to apply his first aid training until an ambulance arrived. By taking the appropriate action while under considerable stress he helped save her life.

Working Smarter Not Harder – Jaryd Howard Submitted by Royce Heater

Jaryd Howard is a Seattle service foreman who joined the Flynn family in April of 2018. Jaryd is constantly looking for safer/better ways of performing his job duties, which leads to great innovation.

For cleaning gutters in hard to get spots or high-risk areas, Jaryd has constructed a blower/vacuum extension made from ABS pipe from a local hardware store. This gives him the ability to clean out the gutters from the ground. This effectively eliminates the hazard of a fall and makes the job that much safer.

Marian Kukhar was recognized as Facades Branch Safety Leader for the year. This recognizes outstanding dedication to safety which will always be at the forefront of Flynn. Congratulations Marian, thank you for helping keep our crews safe.

Speak Up for Safety Ray Zahorejko Submitted by Jose Goncalves

While working at the Sun Towers Phase 1 project, Flynn Vancouver’s Ray Zahorejko noticed 30-foot-long guard rails were being hoisted above an operation boom lift. Even though the workers were not Flynn employees Ray promptly brought this unsafe act to the attention of MetroCan Construction’s safety department. The next day Ray was recognized for speaking up when seeing an unsafe act and was awarded the Act of Vigilance Award by MetroCan. Congratulation to Ray on a well-deserved accolade, we love to see Flynn’s safety culture in action.

TOGETHER, WE SCREENING Use the Flynn COVID app to complete the survey every day. This keeps us all alert to symptoms and helps us make the right decision about going to work or staying at home.

Saskatoon Branch Grants a Wish Submitted by Rocky Luciw

Flynn Saskatoon volunteered to help build the Calendar of Wishes for the Make a Wish Foundation. The event provides life changing wishes to children with critical illness. As a baby Lexie was diagnosed with heart failure and required an immediate heart transplant. Now, at 12 years old, you would never know she started life with surgery as she exemplifies strength and resiliency. Lexie wished to go to the Orlando theme parks and our team made that happen. Lexie’s mom described it as “the best experience to last a lifetime.” Special thanks to Livio Aceto from service and Jamie Birtley from waterproofing who teamed up and volunteered their time to help the foundation with mobilizing and demobilizing the signs.

Friendly Competition Feeds 17,650 People Submitted by Kim Orr

During the holidays the Portland Branch challenged the Spokane and Seattle branches to a virtual food drive. The local banks were not accepting in-person donations during COVID, so this would be a fun and safe way for the teams to give back to the community and have a little competition. All the money raised for the food banks was through employee donations. The challenge ended at midnight on New Year’s and

resulted in a combined $3,530.00 USD in donation. On average $25 USD will create 125 meals for those in need, meaning our Pacific Northwest branches supported approximately 17,650 meals! The Strathmore Ringette team, the Ice Queens is being sponsored by Flynn. There have been cancelled tournaments and fundraisers, so the team was had trouble finding funding. But Flynn stepped in to provide a little assistance and made sure the girls looked good playing with their new sweaters. COVID wont last forever and as soon as they are given the all clear, the Ice Queens will be back on the rink and winning games.

Lending a Helping Hand Backpack Give Back in During Difficult Times Edmonton Submitted by Lauren Fry

During the 2020 holiday season, Flynn Denver recognized the difficulties many families were facing this year due to COVID and agreed to do their part to give back to the community.

Andrew Ellis from the Edmonton branch organized a charity drive where everyone was encouraged to donate their backpacks but also fill them with essential items for the less fortunate.

Usually during the holiday season Flynn Denver enjoys spending time with clients to show appreciation for their support over the past year. However, given the currents restrictions it just made sense to donate instead. The Flynn Denver branch made a sizeable donation in our customers’ honor to The Action Center. The Action Center’s mission is to provide an immediate and compassionate response to those in our community experiencing hardship and by offering the resources and services needed to stabilize lives and promote pathways to lasting change. In addition to this effort, we set up a donation box in the main office, and staff members donated dozens of brand-new items that were distributed to a variety of charities.

The fundraising went well, and the team managed to gather 15 backpacks jammed full of goodies. Afterwards they went out and hand delivered them to those that needed them the most. “I can honestly say every person we approached was extremely pleasant and thankful of what we had brought,” said Andrew Ellis. “A lot of them were in tears telling us how they had never received any gifts before.” Andrew and the team are looking to double their goal for next Christmas and reach 30 backpacks.

OPEX Offers Mod. Bit. and Single-Ply Training The OPEX team provides single-ply and Mod. Bit. training to any interested branches throughout all of Flynn. The course has three days dedicated to single-ply and two days for Mod. Bit and branches can choose which training would be best suit their needs. Recently our Roofing Training Technical Specialist, Jose Neiva visited Sudbury, Toronto and London to train our crews. “The guys absolutely loved it and took a ton out of it. They couldn’t say enough about the experience of working with Jose and how well he teaches and shows little tricks and tips to help the guys,” said Kyle Merstorf, Roofing Production Manager for Sudbury. “We had two new foremen attend who we hired in October, and they were very impressed that we offer this type of in-house training and support.” If your branch is interested in having our training specialist visit your branch, please reach out to OPEX@flynncompanies.com

Vito’s Way is the Flynn Way Celebrating the Work of Vito Destito “He’s selfless,” Mark Bagus said of Vito Destito over a cup of coffee. “Our time here is too short, we don’t have to make 100 mistakes, we could just listen to his lessons learned.” Central Estimating Architectural Supervisor Bagus has worked alongside Vito for his entire career here at Flynn. He describes him as a mentor, a source of inspiration, and a guiding force within the staff in estimating and the entire branch. With a 40-year career at Flynn that has spanned across multiple departments, Vito is currently an Estimator of Architectural Products. For the people that Vito has worked with here at Flynn, its abundantly clear that they care about him deeply, not just as a co-worker, but also as a friend. “He takes 15 minutes to tell a two-minute story,” Bagus added. “Some might say that’s a downside, but it’s actually an upside. He tells the whole background and context, everything he has experienced before so it becomes your knowledge.” While Vito’s experience included time in drafting and project management, Bagus claims that he never once lorded his experience over others within the company. He has developed connections across every department, directing traffic, and pointing endless employees in the right direction. “That gives you an idea of how you can last in a career,” Bagus said. “You see guys like Vito in estimating, it makes you like your job more. He’s a true coach that is happy and content with what he’s doing here at Flynn. He’s an inspiration because he’s a guy who’s been here for 40 years and chooses to be here.”

He advises that everyone at Flynn gives 100 per cent to their work every day, regardless of what is going on outside the office. “Always do your best, share, and be honest with yourself and the people here,” he added. “If you don’t know something, you ask, never assume. There are so many knowledgeable people here.”

Staying Humble Vito smiled when asked about his beginnings here at Flynn. He’s humble, and a little out of his element talking, and maybe bragging about, his 40-year career. He shrugged this conversation off like it was no big deal, yet endless colleagues rave about his knowledge and kindness. “It’s nothing,” he said smiling. Coming directly out of Humber college, Vito began his career with a company called Peerless that would eventually be acquired by Flynn. “Coordinating, then estimating, project managed for four or five years, back into estimating, ran drafting, estimating,” Vito explained nonchalantly. He’s touched just about every department here at Flynn, beginning his time well before things like AutoCAD were the norm. He maintains that he loves coming into work every day and connecting with those he works with.

“I enjoy people and working with people,” he said. “I’m a people person, I don’t mind sharing something that I know, and I don’t mind helping out when I can. The people here are what makes the company great.”

The way Vito spoke gave off a sense that his 40-year career is nothing special. He smiled and said, “just try and do your best every day.”

Rave Reviews Vito has connected with just about everyone from senior executives to brand new hires out of school. “I get frustrated and have bad days, but I’ve never seen him mad,” said Doug Dainton, Central Estimating Manager out of Flynn Toronto. “It’s probably why everyone likes him.” Dainton has known Vito for 32 years, meeting him on his first day at Peerless, a company acquired by Flynn. He pointed out his natural ability to teach, exceptional work ethic while claiming that he is one of the most patient people he’s ever met. “He will work till midnight at his kitchen table if that was what he had to do to get the job done,” he explained. Vito has even gone out of his way to help Dainton with household tasks, or by finding an incredibly obscure bolt for a trailer. “He just says leave it to me.” “Vito, thanks for always putting the word yes in front of the word no,” Dainton said.

Passing Flynn Traditions on To Younger Generations

Toronto Branch Manager Bruce Illes points to Vito as the brain to pick in the company. “If you want information, I don’t think there’s been a time when he has not had an idea or the answer, especially on architectural metals.”

Bagus briefly explained the role of a Griot in an African village while finishing his coffee. He mentioned that they are the experienced historian and repository of knowledge who leads their tribe.

“I think he gets people engaged by taking the time to make others feel comfortable,” said Illes. “He’s the most easy-going guy, team player, and someone that can get people to listen. When he’s talking, he’s saying it for a reason, he’s saying it for a reason.”

“Vito reminds me a lot of a Griot,” he added. “He accumulates stories along with all the information from the village and passes the information onto the younger generation. When he finally retires, it’s a whole Flynn history leaving, an entire library.”

Illes met Vito when he joined in 2001 and comments his exceptional knowledge. “A lot of people can have knowledge, but where he wins, he always takes time to explain it. He always gives you a history of projects, customers, and materials.”

“Nobody is going to hear the same stories Vito has experienced.” A big thank you from your Flynn Family Vito for being the best person can be every day!

“I think of Flynn as a family. It’s a team here and it’s about caring, sharing knowledge, and learning from each other. That’s Vito. Embracing the Flynn Way and Leading by Example Manny H. DeSousa, Estimator Architectural Products, describes Vito as a walking encyclopedia, the first person he uses as a resource to answer a complicated question. “Undoubtedly, he has come across the same situation sometime in the past and is very glad to share his solution, usually accompanied by a humorous story,” DeSousa said. When DeSousa joined Flynn 15 years ago, Vito was the first person to help him navigate through working at a large company like Flynn. “We quickly became friends and our friendship has only strengthened over the years,” he said. “He is a very dedicated family man that puts the needs of others ahead of his own, whether it’s his own family or his Flynn family. Described as kind-hearted and approachable, DeSousa said he possesses a willingness to help absolutely anyone with any sort of issue, regardless of whether it is part of his “job description” or not.
