Transforming a Department to Adapt to Market Trends
Submitted by Ken Brown
Flynn Vancouver has two crews of highly skilled roofers that specialize in sloped roofing shingles, which makes it unique to Flynn.
John Paul Caguioa and Josh Ayao are the two senior foremen and John Temones is a junior foreman who is adapting quickly to smaller specialty projects as he gains experience. Under Ken Brown they have become a well-oiled machine and management could not be happier with their ongoing success. Last year management sought to steer a major shift with the department because the market for asphalt shingle roofing had become less profitable. A pivot to a more profitable space was needed and metal roofs and coatings looked promising. The crews were skeptical at first, but after a bit of a slow start they have really taken the bull by the horns and are now pumping out high quality metal roofs and roof coatings. They are currently in the middle of a 150,000 SF metal re-roof by the name of Hillside Place and Josh’s crew is working on the Pacific Wildlife Research Center which is a project for the government of Canada. With their added ability to install detailed EPDM and cold process SBS, the department has really transformed into a true multiscope machine answering the market’s needs.
