PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE What is Culture at Flynn?

A couple of weeks ago, we held our annual senior leadership conference, which was the first one since before the pandemic! Our time together was very fruitful, and oh so refreshing, and was a great reminder that what happens at Flynn every day, is a series of human events. The key theme at our conference was “Culture”, and I’d like to share a couple of important takeaways from this historic meeting.

We put a lot of work into this topic during our time together, and the first thing we all agreed on was the definition of Culture. What we came up with was: “Culture is an unseen force that impacts everything in an organization. It is the cumulative effect of what people see, hear and believe about the organization.”

Every organization has a culture, either by design or by default.

And companies with a healthy culture don’t let culture drift on its own, they lead culture to a place they want it to go – by design. And when I refer to leaders, it’s not JUST senior leaders.

Good culture exists because leaders at all levels led it there.

We all agreed that at Flynn, although we are far from perfect, we do have a healthy culture. And our good culture didn’t just happen, it took planning, and effort, and conscious leadership. But we also agreed that culture isn’t something you work on, check a box, and move on to the next task.

Protecting and developing our culture is a never-ending responsibility from everyone at Flynn.

There are a couple of specific reasons why protecting and developing our culture is so important at this point in our journey.

Growth: The first reason is that we have plans to continue the growth trajectory that we have been on as a company for decades. We remain willing to grow, which is a unique trait in our space, as most of the companies we compete with are happy to stay the same. And that’s fine, its their choice. But we have always felt at Flynn that if we aren’t growing, we are actually moving backwards. We need to ensure that as we grow, our culture doesn’t drift, or worse.

Succession: The second reason is that succession is inevitable at every level of the company. We will ALL retire one day, and that means we have a responsibility to ensure our healthy culture is maintained – and even developed – as we experience succession across the organization.

Once we all agreed on the definition of culture, and the important reasons to make it a priority, we knew we needed to communicate our cultural aspirations in a way that everyone at Flynn can relate to and can rally around. Our time together resulted in aligning the senior leadership group on our cultural aspirations, because it isn’t until we all agree what our aspirations are, that we can cascade it through the company.

So, I truly believe that our time together at this conference will prove to be a milestone meeting, in taking our culture from the subconscious, to the conscious, for all of us to live every day.

You will be seeing a lot about culture in the next while, in the form of future Flynn Flash magazine articles, Straight Talks, posters, branding at places like jobsite trailers and our mobile apps, discussions at toolbox meetings, and training at Flynn University classes.

To make our culture come alive, we must all live it each and every day, and in every interaction, we have with customers and with each other.

Flynn Expands into the Durham Region We are proud to announce the opening of our new Durham branch in Whitby, Ontario.

Our Hamilton and London branch provide coverage for the regions west of Toronto and our new Durham branch can give that support to the eastern regions. With a population of just over half a million, the Durham region is a prime market waiting to be captured. Looking forward to seeing our new branch grow and the Flynn reach expand.

Flynn Industrial Cladding Radial Gates to Generate Hydroelectric Submitted by James Sheehan

Flynn Industrial has returned to the Site C Clean Energy project in Fort St. John to work on a new and challenging scope of work.

The scope involves installing insulated metal panels from Italy on the front face of three radial gates. These gates are required to control the flow of water through the “Spill Ways” in times of high-water levels (spring melt/extreme rainfall events) or to aid in controlling the volume of water that can be redirected through the intakes. This redirected water is then fed to the turbines in the powerhouse to create electricity.

Access to the work faces and working on convex gates are only two of the challenges our crew is having to deal with, but morale is high, and the quality of work is up to our usual high standards.

Flynn Industrial Succeeds Where Others Have Failed Submitted by Rafal Bacinski

The Flynn Industrial crew has returned to Saskatchewan to take over the completion of a building envelope installation on the Milestone Mine.

The contractor that initially took on this work might not have fully appreciated the harsh realities of winter work in the industrial setting, and the complexities of installing IMP panels. Flynn Industrial mobilized at site within a couple of weeks from the initial call and completed the project through the winter and spring of 2023. Our crews were challenged with extreme site conditions from the get-go, winter in the middle of Saskatchewan farmland feels extra cold. The work began with days of shoveling the snow/ice and shaking out the materials stored on site by the previous contractor.

Our experienced crews quickly and safely installed the remaining wall and roof IMPs, flashings and miscellaneous building systems on buildings reaching up to 80 feet in height! Multiple access and material handling systems were used throughout the installation.

A big shout out to our crews for putting up with windchills of -30 and below while 80 feet up in the manlift baskets!

The Brandon Service Team Knows the Importance of Coaching Submitted by Neil Winters

Kyle Hingey is our newest service foreman at the Brandon branch, and he knows the importance of coaching.

The Flynn Way is about helping those around you, because we can only succeed, when we succeed together. Here Kyle is training James Bleach who recently arrived from the U.K., how to strip in a curb for a gooseneck vent at the Brandon Shoppers Mall. Kyle just got promoted to foreman at the beginning of May, so its great to see him off to a strong start. Looking forward to hearing more about this new foreman and his crew.

Flynn Elevates BMO Centre with Dazzling Copper and Bronze Transformation Submitted by Richard White

Calgary's architectural team has embarked on an exciting endeavor to breathe new life into the BMO Centre.

Their mission: to adorn the iconic structure with over 8,000 gleaming panels, casting a radiant hue of bronze and copper.

Among the 8,000 panels of ACM artistry, over 7,500 exhibit unique designs that add character and charm to the project. This ambitious project is poised to redefine the center's aesthetics, setting a new standard for architectural brilliance.

Our journey began with the production of a remarkable collection of bronze and copper ACM panels, crafted with precision in our state-of-the-art manufacturing plants located in Vancouver and Winnipeg. But before a single panel was placed, we enlisted the expertise of the TSC team to provide us with invaluable 3D scans of the building and meticulously designed panel cut plans. This collaborative effort ensured that every panel found its place seamlessly, guaranteeing a visually stunning outcome.

It is worth noting that safety has remained our utmost priority throughout this venture and there have been no major incidents reported. At the project's peak, we had a dedicated team of over 40 skilled workers onsite, ensuring smooth progress every step of the way. The Flynn Calgary team is proud to be part of this remarkable journey, marking yet another milestone in our commitment to excellence in craftsmanship and innovation. Flynn Portland Develops Award Winning Total Roofer Athlete Program Submitted by Madison Swanson

Flynn Portland was awarded the Oregon Governor’s Occupational Safety & Health for Innovation Award in 2023 for the development and roll out of the Total Roofer Athlete Program.

Russ Nicolai partnered with Dr. Chantel Gorden of WorkRight Northwest, and together they presented the Total Roofer Athlete Program. The most important thing we have learned is to listen to the needs of the workers. The Roofer Athlete Program is teaching our workers why we do the work the way we do (lifting, bending, stretching) and that we are always looking to improve the industry standards regarding musculoskeletal disorders.

After a trifecta year of wins including the NRCA Gold Circle for Innovation, and the 2023 Don Flynn Award, Russ retired. Russ embodied a safety culture that encourages everyone to look out for each other to ensure we all get home safely every day.

Flynn Portland Waterproofing Picking Up Steam Submitted by Shane Mckenzie

Waterproofing is the newest scope to be added to the Flynn portfolio and Portland waterproofing has picked up a lot of work this summer.

Work on the West Park Bethany job has been moving well as our crews install a traffic coating system on 25,000 SF. Our team handled the removal of the existing coating, surface prep, and coordinated repairs to the below grade tie in at the cold joint of the structural slab. Looking forward to seeing more waterproofing projects in future editions.

Flynn Project Becomes Local Celebrity Submitted by Don Delaney

Long time readers of the Flynn Flash will remember the Concord Adex Skybridge that was featured in a past issue.

The project has a very distinct “H” appearance and will be familiar to anyone who has seen the Toronto skyline. A local kindergarten teacher asked his students to pick a landmark and draw it for art class and the Flynn project or the “H building” was incredibly popular and the teacher reached out to us to share the art.

Flynn Team at Work Modernizing the Alberta Power Grid Submitted by James Sheehan

Flynn Industrial is working on the Genesee Repowering Project for Capital Power.

Capital Power are upgrading their site to use two gas powered generators to allow them to move away from mining and burning coal which will produce cleaner electricity for Alberta. The crew has battled extremely congested and tight work areas while ensuring the quality of work expected from Flynn. It’s going to be a high pressure run to completion as the owner’s plan is to have both units fired up and making power at the start of 2024.

Glazing at the Heart of Montreal Submitted by Nicholas Tomasino

Our Montreal team has been tasked with completing 7,000 SF of fully glazed skylights for the Royalmount.

The Royalmount is one of the largest commercial development projects in Montreal right now. This site is located at the heart of the island of Montreal. It is locateed at the junction of the Trans Canada highway (40) and the provincial Decarie Expressway (15) which are the main arteries that link the city with the rest of the country.

This project will include an entertainment venue, retail and office spaces as well as a residential portion. Our crews started working in late winter/early spring 2023 and the project is advancing nicely.

Glazing for the British High Commission Submitted by Mathieu Guay

The British High Commission project in Ottawa has been a long and challenging process.

This glazing job has faced design difficulties, schedule delays, COVID and other challenges coupled with the unique security requirements, since the commission houses the UK diplomat to Canada. Despite all the challenges faced, through the hard work and dedication of our site forces, the Ottawa branch is nearing the end of the project that will always stand out as a landmark in the Ottawa region.

A special shoutout to our foreman on the project, Bob Sherard. His dedication to the project, along with his endless custom design solutions are the key driving factors to this project being a success.

John Correia Recognized by PCL for Outstanding Commitment to Safety Submitted by Aimee Eden

While working on the Rogers Center renovation Journeyman John Correia received the Worker’s Trade Committee monthly safety award.

“We’re happy to provide recognition on behalf of the Worker’s Trade Committee. John’s ability to lead by example certainly had an impact on the workers around him. His crew demonstrated a daily commitment to safety that had a positive impact on the project. I appreciated their dedication to safety, professionalism and willingness to work together.”

Flynn Vancouver Constructs New Royal Columbian Hospital Submitted by Edward Yu

The hospital’s new acute care tower is a twelve-storey post-disaster building which features 350-beds, multiple floors for acute and critical care patients, an emergency department with satellite medical imaging unit and 75 treatment bays.

Flynn has had their boots on the ground since early 2021 for this total building envelope project assisting EllisDon with tie-in. The Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Phase 2 is scheduled to be completed by end of 2024.

The cladding scope consists of 250,000 SF of steel siding, architectural louvers, Kalzip, and ACM panels with various colours.

There will be over 3,600 ACM panels with a unique pixelization pattern with different colours. Following the architectural design, all panels will be perfectly aligned vertically and horizontally at all windows with no notching. As seen in the pictures the Kalzip siding has been coordinated with the Flynn glazing crew for perfect alignment.

The crew of 19 men is led by Kevin Timms (foreman) and Azmir Hadzovic, this was Azmir’s last project as metals foreman and he has transitioned into the superintendent role. Special thanks to Kevin and the whole metals crew for their excellent work installing the variety of custom-coloured panels and flashings.

The glazing scope is over 50,000 SF of exterior and interior glazing which consists of over 600 exterior punched windows, the main entrance veneer curtain wall, and various specialty interior glass infill to suit hospital requirements. The punched windows underwent a series of testing to meet the high acoustic ratings due to the heliport. Special measures were taken to ensure that each window opening was installed in the exact spot it needed to be to achieve the symmetrical panel look from the exterior. The veneer curtain wall is a unique system supported by an engineered glulam structure with a custom back section extrusion designed to cover over the glulam, providing a continuous envelope.

The glazing infill on this project consists of the following variations of integral blinds, psychiatric glazing, radiation leadlined glass, laser shielding infills, and electrochromic glass. The crew of six men is led by Bob Reynolds (foreman), always going the extra mile ensuring that all safety and quality control is met.

Punched window install

The roofing and waterproofing teams have been working hard on this hospital project. The project is comprised of 117,200 SF of conventional roofing and 46,600 SF of inverted roofing. The below grade waterproofing scope is comprised of 55,000 SF of blindside waterproofing with mechanically attached drain mat.

With over 25 roof areas left to complete, the roofing team has been making hay this summer while the sun shines.

Our crews have been doing a stellar job at working closely with the general contractor so that impediments are removed before they can be an issue. Some of the big challenges with this project are dealing with limited space to store materials, ensuring our work is protected from subtrade damage, and negotiating for crane time to move our materials.

A big shout out to our frontline leaders for all their hard work, roofing and waterproofing foremen: Shane Hildebrant, James Gordon, Ken Nguyen, Bobby Cullum, Leo Soares and Kyle Monds.

In the Trenches of Athabasca Oil Sands Submitted by Marcin Mrozowicz

Flynn Industrial was contracted to provide some upgrades and modifications to an existing crusher facility, allowing Imperial Oil Kearl to use larger and more efficient crusher mills.

The team needed to design, supply, and install two large additions to an existing building, including removal of existing surfaces, providing new waterproofing below the elevated train tracks (yes, train trucks 40’ above ground) and installation of new insulated cladding and insulated standing seam roofing.

The installation was quite complicated due to very restricted access and coordination with equipment installation while the plant remained operational. Apart from cladding and roofing of new extensions our crews took care of closing off and patching approximately 40 large new wall and roof penetrations, fieldmeasuring, and field-fabricating custom metal closures. Our scope of work also included the supply and installation of new “Heavy Duty” overhead rubber roller doors – and bear in mind, “Heavy Duty” in Ft. Mac takes on a brand-new meaning, these doors were monsters!

Kudos and special thanks to our crew: Cody Coombs (site foreman), Jordan Aplin, Ion Manic and Fernando Giardino for completing this complicated heavy and congested installation in a safe and efficient manner.

Largest Contract of the Year Submitted by Carley Zimba

Our team in Ottawa has been busy on a local Walmart re-roof at the tune 1,553 SQS and a multi-million price tag.

That makes this job the largest of the year in Ottawa. This project has a crew of 14 men and is led by Foreman Ben Sabourin and superintendents Sefton Brown and JP Lussier. Work pace has been solid, with the crew hitting 160 SQS a day. The secret to their success was hoisting materials during the night, so the day shift is ready to work right away.

New Flynn Crane Outweighs a Humpback Whale Submitted by Chris Bourgault

Flynn Vancouver celebrated the arrival of a new 45-ton crane by throwing it an arrival party.

The entire branch gathered to greet the crane and take a great group picture for the Flash. Local crane operator Mike Livinsky is grinning ear for ear, and eagerly waiting to take the new crane out for a spin.

One of the Largest Re-Roofs in Winnipeg Submitted by Bogdan Nowak

Winnipeg Logistics is a 242,000 SF re-roof project.

It includes carpentry and removal of the existing BUR roof and replacement with new Mod. Bit. roof. This project started at the end April 2023 and is scheduled to be completed mid-October 2023. The 12-man roofing crew and two-man sheet metal crew are making great progress.

Mitch Wright Recognized with PCL Leadership Award Submitted by Cory Stevenson

Architectural Metals Foreman Mitch Wright was recognized by PCL for his contribution to safety, productivity, and quality on the Snow Ghost Inn Atrium Project.

“During my after-work inspection yesterday, I was impressed by the level of professionalism and attention to detail exhibited. At PCL, we strongly value the concept of building success together, where we strive to collaborate with subcontractors to achieve high standards of workmanship and safety, satisfy our clients, and create win-win situations for all parties involved. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to continued collaboration and the successful completion of our project.”

New Team, New Software, New P-Cards Submitted by Lisa Couto

Ramona Lacko has retired from the Accounts Payable team after 25+ years. The P-Card management program has transitioned to the Accounts Payable team in Toronto under Lisa Couto’s management.

New P-Cards were rolled out to staff, including an expense management tool (Chrome River) for capturing and processing all P-Card expenses. These new programs and processes support our push for a paperless Flynn and reduce cost while increasing transparency.

There may be a few speed bumps along the way, but our team is dedicated to brining an improved system to all of Flynn.

Major Changes in Flynn London Submitted by Craig Doyle

Craig Doyle was excited to share a major shuffle in the London branch.

Lindsay Henderson moved from being a production admin to account manager in service. Matt Tregunno, who used to work in the field in Toronto, is now the new service superintendent in London. Kelly Schluter is now the new service admin and James MacDonald who has been with Flynn for six years as the account manager is working with Lindsay and teaching her the ropes.

Finally, Sadie Budden has moved from being the service admin to the construction admin. This shuffle of roles and responsibilities is a fantastic way for people to try new roles that may fit them better and at the very least gain a better perspective on how Flynn operates at a whole.

Rainy and Humid But the Work Goes on in Atlantic Canada Submitted by Samantha LeBlanc

The Moncton crew has been hard at work on a 1,693 SQS TPO recover/reroof. This project commenced near the start of summer and the biggest issue is the weather.

The crew has been battling the hot and humid summer months along with the rain, but have been working hard to successfully maintain schedule. The Moncton branch also wrapped up a 98 SQS modified bitumen reroof at the RBC in Charlottetown, PEI. The main challenge here was working on a tight jobsite. It was located downtown Charlottetown, with a limited parking lot space, therefore coordinating deliveries took cooperation between the team and the customer to ensure operations went smoothly.

Our Seattle Team Helps Expand Local Medical Center Submitted by McKay Caruthers

Built with prominent visibility from Interstate 5, Kaiser Permanente Everett Specialty Center is in one of Washington State’s fastest growing areas.

The project of expanding the existing medical center includes a state-of-the-art 150,000 SF ambulatory surgery center with specialty clinics and exam rooms. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic these spaces were designed for modularity and flexibility, including future integration with telehealth services.

Flynn installed a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing system which included tapered insulation. There are three levels of roofing in addition to a parking garage.

This project presented notable challenges and opportunities.

The work was marked by an accelerated schedule. Additionally, the Seattle Office utilized the HULK (Heated Urethane Low-rise adhesive Kart) and “spatter pattern” in applying adhesive. This device and method delivered significant savings in labor and material. But perhaps the biggest challenge associated with this job was the large number of roof penetrations. As a state-ofthe-art medical center, the roof was riddled with penetrations required to support sophisticated and technical medical machinery, in addition to HVAC, air exchange, ventilation, and other engineering systems.

A staggering 250 of the 500 total roof penetrations were not originally accounted for at the project’s inception. Nevertheless, Foreman Rodger Fairbanks and his crew stunningly executed all this additional work without any added schedule duration.

Furthermore, Job Lead Michael Bigsby won the region’s “Top Coach” award, in part, for efforts mentoring “rookies” working on the Kaiser Permanente Everett Specialty Center.

Panel Job for Kiweki Point in Canada’s Capital Submitted by Giacomo Zanabria

Our Ottawa metals crew (Jacques Bontemps and Jordan Stokes) is currently working on an aluminium panels job on a new “lookout point”.

The project has been named “Kiweki Point” and will offer two levels of unobstructed views of the capital region of Canada in Ottawa. Here you can see our progress pic and the completed work will be shown in a future edition.

Saskatoon Beauty Now Stands Complete Submitted by Benjamin Smith

The Saskatoon metals and roofing crews recently completed work on 639 Main Street.

The project required an EPDM roof on multiple levels, and pavers on level five and fourteen. This first task was accomplished by the roofing division while the metals division installed all insulated metal panel and prefinished steel cladding. Spokane Office Goes on a Field Trip Submitted by Kim Orr

On June 14th, Torben Begines, Spokane Safety Director and Ryan Kindy, Spokane Service Estimator took some office employees out on a field trip.

They visited four total jobsites, including the McKinstry Warehouse, Providence Auditorium, Mother Gamelin Center and Sacajawea Middle School. While on site the office staff reviewed the fall protection plan, were notified of hazards, learned about how skin panels were installed and were taught about the probe and repair process on a roof. It is incredibly important that our office staff experience some time on site so they can better understand the lifeblood of our industry. Hopefully this catches on with more of our branches.

Teamwork and Collaboration Brings Cladding Job to Life Submitted by Steven Stone

65 Chesterfield stands tall at the corner of Esplanade and Chesterfield in North Vancouver as a stunning architectural marvel.

This cladding job was only made possible with the teamwork and communication within the Flynn team. To begin, there were two separate TSC scans used to aid construction. These scans allowed Flynn to expedite shimming information and panel releases, allowing about 1,400 panels (95% of the project) to be released for fabrication well ahead of the site’s needs.

Kyle Wakely (foreman) and his team’s dedication and strategic efforts to meet the aggressive install schedule were critical to keeping on time and impressing all stakeholders. While our Project Superintendent Chris Rathy worked tirelessly to provide adequate manpower and installation input to ensure success.

But of course, we must also thank the boots on the ground who did the cladding and took some time to take progress photos of 65 Chesterfield, check out FlynnCrew.com for photos of the completed project, it looks great.

Toronto Estimating – Basketball for Charity Submitted by Mark Bagus

On June 2nd members of the Central Estimating Team competed in the inaugural Ballin' out for Charity basketball tournament where all proceeds were donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto.

The event was able to raise $70,000 for the food bank, which is fantastic news given the increased demands on the charity. The estimating team gave an impressive performance, managing to get all the way to the semi-finals.

Tricity Pavilion – A Testament to Teamwork Submitted by Steven Stone

In the heart of Coquitlam, a remarkable architectural achievement is taking shape – the Tricity Pavilion.

The Tricity Pavilion presentation center seamlessly combines 5,800 SF of Kingspan Insulated Panels with approximately 5,600 SF of Kawneer Clearwall glazing. The result is a space filled with natural light that complements the surrounding environment.

The Tricity Pavilion is a testament to collaboration and efficient planning. Foreman Logan Kingdon’s exemplary leadership has brought together the metals and glazing crews, fostering a strong sense of teamwork and safety. Plus, the coordination between the project management team and the client ensured a smooth process, allowing for early ordering of curtain wall and vertical fin components.

With every detail carefully considered, the Tricity Pavilion stands tall as a symbol of what's possible when people come together to create something extraordinary. As it nears completion, it promises to be a captivating space that will leave visitors inspired.

The Beating Heart of Vancouver Submitted by Bryce Young

The Vancouver Center has a specifically designed canopy that emulates an ECG (recording of the heart's electrical activity) to symbolically bring the Vancouver Downtown core new life and offer first class amenities.

This was a challenge that required outside of the box techniques and teamwork solutions. Adorned with 24,396 SF of cladding and 3,205 SF of SBS roof, this challenge required the entire Vancouver team to come together to ensure success.

The specific shape of the building nicknamed “The Heartbeat” required each panel to be a unique shape that rose sharply from Level 3 to Level 34 and back down again. TSC 3D shop drawings were created, and key spots identified and managed via BIM Model coordination. Site scans to ensure fabrication of materials were spot on. Busy streets, emergency responder routes, high winds, extreme custom access solutions, and limited space tested the crew’s ability to create safe and workable plans to accomplish the build.

COVER STORY Quality Craftmanship Secures Massive Infrastructure Project in Ottawa For nearly a decade our Ottawa crews have been hard at work improving and expanding the Ottawa Light Rail Transit (OLRT).

This multi-billion-dollar project has the potential to change the face of Ottawa, alleviate grid locked traffic and provide a greener commute throughout downtown. Flynn was contracted for Stage 1, which consisted of 12.5 km of track, 13 stations and was completed in 2019. Our crews were then asked to return for Stage 2 due to the outstanding workmanship on the first stage and Flynn’s unique ability to offer the total envelope package.

Stage 2 is slated to cost a whopping 4.66 billion and aims to vastly expand the transportation infrastructure on offer from the OLRT. With an expected 44 km of rail and 24 new stations, 77% of Ottawa residents will be within five km of the OLRT. Such an undertaking demanded strong communication and planning between the scopes. Offering the total envelope solution is more than just providing roofing, architectural or glazing to our clients.

It’s the promise of a cohesive and complimentary total package.

“In the early stages of the OLRT it was evident that tackling the full envelope was going to have its logistical challenges. These projects have/had many overlapping conditions and schedules that didn’t allow us to have the scopes work independently. To adapt, we assembled a dedicated OLRT multi-scope team. This team’s sole responsibility was the OLRT project. This allowed

COVER STORY them to work as a unit to forecast upcoming issues and get ahead of them,” said Jason Georganas, Ottawa Branch Manger.

“Now the first stations are in the final stages of envelope completion and the product looks fantastic. We still have a long way to go, but things are on track because of the communication between our scopes.”

The Flynn roofing crews finished their work on the Baseline and Lincoln Field stations in November 2022. Each station had multiple roofs and there was no shortage of challenges on the scope. But the real challenge was that the project was awarded just as the material shortage struck. This meant the management team needed to secure materials from across North America with the help of the National Purchasing team at Flynn headquarters.

The team was able to secure the materials needed, and the roofing scope was completed to Flynn standards. Our cladding scope on the other hand is still in progress and includes 15 stations throughout the entirety of the OLRT. The plan is to install over a quarter of a million combined fiber cement, Accumet and STX panels throughout these stations.

Our glazing team was tasked with providing glazed canopies for the stations, curtainwall, point-supported (stainless steel) windscreens and glazed-barriers. The crews also worked on five stations that needed pedestrian bridges for passengers crossing roadways. But the most challenging station was the Ottawa International Airport. The proximity to the tarmac meant additional security requirements and some of the glass hoisting was even performed directly from the tarmac. As an extra measure to ensure a final quality product, Paul Carcone, OPEX Glazing Operations Specialist flew in to provide his expertise.

Part of the Flynn Way is offering outstanding craftmanship to secure repeat business. But quality craftmanship is more than just the quality of the final product, it requires planning, communication, and a team working together. Flynn Ottawa showed foresight by assembling a multi-scope team and by using Flynn resources such as the National Purchasing and OPEX teams. This planning has put the branch well on their way to leaving their mark on the city and securing their reputation as a total envelope provider.

Carlos Pedroza was at the park in Denver when he noticed a little boy had chased some geese Jeff Ball and John Yildz were returning to and ended up in a pond nearby.

The boy was in obvious distress, so Carlos waded into the water to rescue the boy who was now fully submerged. He got the boy out of the pond, and called 911. Fortunately, the boy did not require additional care and was just rattled.

On their way, both barely escaped an accident. Having missed it by a few seconds, Jeff pulled the service vehicle over to assist. A fire then started in the second vehicle. Another motorist had a small portable fire extinguisher which failed to extinguish the fire. Jeff deployed the Flynn 20 # ABC fire extinguisher and successfully extinguished the fire.

HEALTH AND SAFETY Flynn Crew Rescues Contractor Trapped on Windy Swing Stage Submitted by Tim McConnell

While bringing equipment down for securement due to a wind warning our crew noticed that one of the contractors was having difficulty on their swing stage at level 17.

The Flynn crew on level 5 immediately rushed over to help the swing stage which had begun to swing violently in the wind. The drop cable, rope grabs and control zone barriers had become tangled in the wind which made it impossible for the swing stage to descend. The winds had reached 70 kmh/44 mph so more Flynn crew joined the mission of untangling the lines and steadying the swing stage. It took the help of 15 Flynn team members, but they managed to secure the swing stage and help the trapped workers to safety.

The crew’s heroic quick thinking helped prevent a disaster and that is why they have all been recognized with the Flynn Life Saver Award.

Rui Medeiros Recognized with Life Saver Award Submitted by Lindsay Henderson

London Foreman Rui Medeiros was working on canopies in a subdivision in London, Ontario when he noticed an elderly woman trip over a curb and injure herself quite badly.

Rui moved in quickly to provide help and put pressure on her wounds. While he waited for the ambulance to arrive, he comforted the woman and continued his first aid training. Soon the first responders were on the scene and were able to take over. Rui said the situation was stressful, but he was very grateful his first aid training kicked in and he was able to help.

OPEX Macaden and HULK Machine Conquer Miles of Roof Submitted by Kyle MacLean

The James Snow Parkway project involves over one million SF of roofing.

This is a massive amount of roofing for our Toronto team, no matter how large of a crew you put in the field. Luckily they had access to the Macaden and HULK machine. The HULK low-rise adhesive kart allows for easy adhesive application and makes insulation installation a breeze. While the Macaden is a propelled, self-guided bituminous membrane installation machine designed to unroll, weld and smooth base and cap sheet membranes.

“The Macaden machine has been a huge help, it takes less labour to operate, offers a consistent product and gives a perfect bleed out. It also freed up manpower to put on other tasks,” said Kyle MacLean, Project Manager. “The HULK machine gets insulation down easier and faster, while providing a consistent bead.”

RhinoBond Training for Our Team Roofing Training Specialist Jed Johnston was recently in Saskatoon visiting the Prince Albert Recreation Centre project.

Jed took the opportunity to teach the crew how to soldier stack and stager their insulation layers, which is a method that makes it easier for everyone to line up the screws and plates for RhinoBond. During that time, he also showed the rookies how to know the difference between hitting and missing the steel deck and the best way to probe and check your own work.

OPEX OPEX Team Training and Supporting our New Foremen Everyone can use some help when starting out a new job and our foremen are no different.

The London branch recently reached out to the OPEX team to request some onsite support for Bryson Williams, who had recently started as a foreman. The team is always happy to share expertise and they sent Jed Johnston, roofing expert, to spend some time with the London crew. Topics covered included preplanning days, scheduling, organization of material, and setting goals in advance. Jed had a great time working with the crew and even handed out some OPEX hats to mark the occasion.

Unique Crew Adopts Sign Language on Site Our roofing specialist Jed Johnston was called into Seattle to provide his expertise on the 28 stories tall high-rise building know as The Eight.

The primary concern on this job was the level of congestion that naturally occurs within such tight work sites. Jed had been to hundreds of sites in his career, but he had never encountered a crew like this. Two of the men were deaf (Blaine Yates and Nicholas Rickenna), but the rest of the crew had adapted by learning some basic sign language. Our field staff already use hand signals sometimes due to the natural noise on a work site, so this came naturally to the team. Jed taught the crew how to properly stagger their plies between base sheet and cap sheet from the drains and how to picture frame their drains with cap sheet when the drains don’t line up. It was a great visit for Jed and with over 300 crews throughout North America who knows what Jed will discover on his next visit.

The Edmonton branch held its 2nd annual Flynn Family BBQ on June 25th for the families of field and office employees.

It was a beautiful day with the sun shining and much fun was had by all! There were bouncy castles and face painting, and plenty of fantastic activities, including a three-legged race for the kids and a cornhole tournament for the adults.

Halifax held its first Flynn Family Golf Day on June 24th.

It was a chance to have a fun day with the family and introduce Flynn kids to the game of golf. The weather was great and so was the golf. There were closest to the pin prizes for kids and the game was followed by a lunch event for all at the clubhouse.

All together it was a great success and will become an annual event!
