PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Bigger or Better? There is a lot of planning that goes on at all levels of the company, for both the short and the long-term. From the Board of Directors perspective, our short-term planning takes the form of an annual budget and is our most accurate look ahead, because we have pretty clear visibility over the next 12 months with things like work on hand. And by the way, we have more work on hand than we have ever had at any given point in time. Our 2019 budgets are set at every branch, and when you roll up all of our regional budgets, it adds up to an overall company budget for this year in excess of 1 billion dollars in sales. At the end of the budgeting process this year, when I saw that number, I had to pause and let that reality sink in for a minute. We are a now a billion-dollar company. And that is a milestone we should all be very proud of. Although I don’t like to think about Flynn as a “big company,” our size and scale gives us real and significant advantages over our smaller competitors. We have purchasing power, the ability to spread of our risk over 35 branches across North America, and ample OPPORTUNITIES for advancement for our people. These are just a few examples of great things that are possible because of our size! But day to day, our goal is not to be big. Our goal is to be THE BEST at what we do every day. Performance improvement is a big part of our strategy. Being the best is what will TRULY separate us from our competition. And although we are pretty good, there is always room for improvement. Being big does not guarantee success, and we have to avoid complacency as we grow. Being innovative, reducing waste, and continuing to invest in the development of our people with programs like Flynn University are the kinds of things that will ensure we remain THE BEST in our space. Being the best is the result of all of us looking at what do every day and asking ourselves the question: “How can I do this better?” Yes, we are a large organization, but we can’t let that get to our heads. We still have to compete for every job we get. This is done by being customer friendly, being the type of company where everyone enjoys our workplace culture, and by being nimble and efficient. This is, as always, the recipe for success. Ask yourself what could you be doing better? Speak up if you think there is a better way to do something; lead by example to ensure we remain the safest we can be at all times; do your part to ensure the work that we complete is of the highest quality; eliminate any waste that you may see. If we have this continuous improvement mindset at all levels, there is nothing that will prevent us from becoming a 2-billion-dollar company in the not too distant future. We have all been enjoying the benefits of being a growth company for a long time. Continuing this growth trajectory will result in further advancement opportunities for the people in Flynn that will be as undeniable in the future, as it has been in the past for so many people. This is not to mention the pride of being part of an industry leading winning team. When I think about how we got here, it occurs to me that being big is a result of doing all the small things right every day; being big is an outcome of being the best! Flynn Family Winning Together! This roofing job was a big safety concern requiring lots of preparation to work with different trades. The planning on safety and production started months before the project started. The general contractor Adolfson & Peterson Construction worked on a plan with Flynn and other trades. The site safety map played out on the roof exactly to plan. The plan was to have the Flynn roofers remove the existing roof and then another trade would come in and set up guard rail systems (to protect our roofers) around the area where they were removing and installing the new deck. Flynn roofers would then come back in and install the new roofing system (50,000 sq. ft. BUR). This job was a huge success with safety, production and quality and because of that, Minneapolis received another job (CenterPoint 700) right away!

KANSAS CITY

Fishtech Group Submitted by Archie MacDonald, John Aerberhard and James Spann

The Fishtech Cloud Security Operations Center Office Building was a multi-scope project with roofing, glazing and architectural metal. This is the second building for this fast growing cybersecurity firm rooted in Kansas City, with Flynn being part of the team on both projects and looking forward to many more! With more than 8,000 man hours invested, the building consisted of 9,300 sq. ft. of Firestone 60 mil self-adhered TPO membrane, 2,600 sq. ft. of Architrex pavers, 7,000 sq. ft. of Kawneer Black Anodized Clearwall SSIT curtain wall system for glazing, 7,000 sq. ft. of 6 mm Reynobond Pure White ACM panels and 4,200 sq. ft. of customer color Morin Matrix panels for metals. While all projects have their varying degree of hurdles, the flow of this project and the working relationship that is being built with the general contractor A.L. Huber Construction was a success.

KANSAS CITY Kansas City Ford Plant Shutdown The Ford Plant was shut down for nine days beginning on Christmas Eve 2018 ending on January 1st, 2019. During the shutdown, we had 32 roofers, seven sheet metal workers and at times two cranes on board to tear-off 246 squares underneath steel…what we call belly work! All tearing had to be completed by the end of the day of January 1st as Ford was reopening on the 2nd. In addition to this extremely tight timeline and inclement weather we encountered along the way, all crane picks were blind requiring all communication to be carried out by radio. A closer look at our schedule reveals that we set up the project on Christmas Eve, and on Christmas Day we started the tear-off. We were given a specific time frame to work within on this day, which meant we were only able to remove 15 squares. The restraints made for a shorter day which worked well as families were able to enjoy the majority of Christmas with their families. On the 26th and 27th we shut down for rain days, and from the 28th - 30th we tore off 186 squares. On New Year’s Eve, site tear-off was shut down due to rain again, but we decided to work and downloaded and cleaned up what wasn’t needed and inspected the roof. We knew that if we hadn’t done this, we would have never made the completion date! On New Year’s Day, we tore off the remaining 45 squares, downloaded, tore down the crane and had everything off the site for Ford’s January 2nd reopening. All in all, the crew set up, tore-off the existing roof, installed new insulation cover board, base sheet, and base flashing, downloaded, tore down the crane and demobilized in a matter of seven days. “This project could be the poster child for teamwork,” said Branch Manager Terry Ard. “I want to thank everyone involved for their hard work and dedication to this project over the holiday season, and I’d like to congratulate our foreman Sergio Hernandez on receiving a Certificate of Appreciation presented by Ford.”

Presto Plastics This began as a service job supported by Bentley Martin (safety) and now has turned into a potential re-roof. The existing roof had 2-3� of Polyurethane foam over BUR. Service showed up immediately, installed interior water diverters, caulked/sealed metal penthouse walls and cut out large blisters around 3-coursed skylights which were like mountains on the roof. One blister had over 60 gallons of water trapped inside! To meet the owners needs, our service techs were onsite as quickly as the emergency repair PO was approved. A number of leaks needed to be stopped before the next rain, requiring all work to be completed before the next inspection which was scheduled to take place on December 5th. Service Ops put together support crews from Denver to help DFW cover other leaks while we concentrated local efforts on stopping the leaks here. This is a manufacturing facility, so the tenant could not afford water intrusion. Whereas this facility runs 24 hours/day, the logistics for cranes and work far exceeded a typical service scope. The safety requirements were far beyond the typical OSHA requirements. Bentley Martin and the team put together safety binders, crane plans, etc. We wouldn’t have even been able to start work without their efforts.

PHOENIX Chandler Viridian The Phoenix team took a quick break to take a picture on the Chandler Viridian project in Chandler, Arizona where they are installing 497 squares of Carlisle TPO with a few tips from special guest Frank Kraus from our Operational Excellence Team (OPEX). Due to excessive trade damage after installing our system, our crew had to return to the site to overlay an additional 150 squares and multiple new penetrations.

The Fairfield Inn and Suites in Tolleson, AZ is a new construction project where we are installing 160 squares of .080 mil Firestone TPO. Due to the general contractors schedule we have had to face multiple remobilizations but are trucking along with an estimated completion date of May 10, 2019.

SEATTLE Harrison Hospital Acute Care Expansion Submitted by Evan Rigsby

Opening in January 2020, Harrison Medical Center’s Silverdale campus expansion will feature state-of-the-art medical technology, a new acute care facility and provide comprehensive healthcare services to the Peninsula community. This facility will be one of the most energy efficient hospitals in the country and the most energy efficient in the state! Services will include: A 60,000 sq. ft. cancer center, heart and stroke care, surgical services including robotic surgery, birthing centers with NICU Level 2, orthopedic care and 24/7 emergency services. Working with general contractor Howard S. Wright (a Balfour Beatty Company), our scope of work includes: 80,000 sq. ft .of CENTRIA’s integrated insulated metal wall panels and windows system (including 4,795 insulated metals wall panels and 488 integrated window frames with exteriors sunshade system); 900 sq. ft. of mechanical screenwall panels, 4.100 sq. ft. of integrated louvers (63 each of various size), 950 sq. ft. of Chiller Yard soundwall panels, interior stainless steel column covers and beam wraps; Torch down membrane roofing, with 1,300 squares of single ply KEE-PVC roofing and roof hatches, roof access stairs and platforms, and roof ship ladders. We also furnished and installed all EPS/Geofoam for concrete slabs and raised beams, including loading dock area and helicopter pad with raised walkway on the level nine roof. Pre-planning with the general contractor to provide guaranteed dimensions of the steel and stud framing, allowed all materials to be made to size to help reduce cost and waste, but also created a one of a kind building envelope system. The Formavue window and sunshade system, integrated with the Formawall dimension series panels, is the largest integrated window project that CENTRIA has ever designed. The podium scope of work included installing the integrated metal wall panel and window system within a CMU punched opening. This is the largest project ever built in Kitsap County and the tallest building west of the Puget Sound. Flynn roofers and carpenters worked through the ‘winter months’ in a challenging environment with unpredictable wind and rain! The project began in June 2018 and is expected to finish in August 2019. PORTLAND Wells Fargo Tower Submitted by Kevin Christian

This is the tallest building in Oregon, and with that title comes inherent difficulties such as loading/ unloading material and equipment, conducting a tear-off on a high-rise making sure nothing falls from the roof! After the project started, we were informed that there was asbestos on the underside of the deck so we had to work gingerly. The scope includes move the existing ballast and IRMA system, tear off existing hot rubber roof, installing new Carlisle EPDM membrane and replacing the IRMA and ballast, replacing the fall protection anchors for the window washing unit and installing traffic coating over the concrete pad the window washing unit drives on.

Port of Vancouver Submitted by Kevin Christian

This is a 1,500 square project for the Port of Vancouver (Washington State). The manufacturer on this project is Johns Manville. It is a metal retrofit reroof where we installed 1 ½” EPS flute filler (loose laid), ¼” Invinsa roof board mechanically fastened, and induction welded JM .060 mil TPO with JM RhinoBond plates attached 12” OC to each purlin. We also removed and replaced with new 750’ LF of gutter and downspouts and installed 650’ LF of Coping Cap.

PORTLAND Daimler/Western Star Trucking Plant Submitted by Kevin Christian and Ryan Low

The Daimler/Western Star Trucking Plant was a project through A-Tech/ Northwest – a 4,700 square, metal retrofit, reroof. The roof assembly was 1 ½” EPS flute filler (loose laid), ½” HD board (mechanically attached) and a self-adhered .060 MIL Sarnafil PVC. We removed and replaced with new 1,500’ LF of gutter and downspouts. We had to coordinate the removal of many large units on the roof as well as the installation of several TI operations. We are pleased to share this project won first place in the Low Slope: Re-Roofing category of Sika Sarnafil’s 2018 Project of the Year competition! General Manager Ryan Low says, “My team put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this one and I would like to thank them and pay a compliment to our safety director, Royce Heather. We went 17-months claim free, and it has a lot to do with his hard work. I am very impressed by his dedication to sending the guys home safely every night.”

BOISE BSU-Micron Center for Material Research Submitted by Scott Laufenberg

The crew of Mike Morris (project foreman), Cory Holden, Joe Evje, Dean McClung and Issac Alvarez recently started work at the Boise State University Micron Center for Material Research. We are doing multi-roof levels (RhinoBond & Adhered TPO 80mil roof system with Tapered insulation) and Wall Panel Systems (CentriaIW-10,20,30 Panels and CS-260 Standard & Perforated panels, MDSI Metal composite panels at entrance exterior/interior, custom Mica & Orange school colors.)

DENVER Denver Water Administration Building Submitted by Mahmood Alomar

Flynn BEC Denver partnered once again with general contractor M.A Mortenson Construction to build the new Denver Water Administration Building and Parking Garage to meet the needs of the community growth. Denver Water’s Operations Complex is in the midst of redevelopment to provide a more efficient, publicly accessible and sustainable headquarters. The complex includes the Administration Building, equipment shops, fleet maintenance, warehouses, trade buildings and space for pipe and materials storage. The goal is to have a modern site that improves the efficiency, functionality, security and safety of all operations. In most cases, it is more cost-effective to rebuild than to renovate existing buildings. The new layout will improve traffic flow and take advantage of matching functions with adjacent buildings. Sustainability is a key factor, as the complex has been designed to incorporate LEED certification, educational demonstrations of net zero energy and leading-edge concepts around the management of all water sources. The projects consist of insulated metal panels forming the exterior building envelope and is trimmed in a perimeter shadowbox effect with a composite aluminum box profile accenting the glazing wall systems. The project is scheduled to be completed by June this year. Currently an interim Project Manager, Blake Merrick, is assigned to work with the base project team of Rick Bright, Mahmood (Mo) Alomar, and James Leach. Our scope of work consists of Kingspan Insulated Metals Panels (Benchmark Panel System and Karrier Panel 58,218 sq. ft.); Alpolic ACM Shadowbox Trim Flashing (20,602 sq. ft.); Berridge Metal Systems (Batten Cap Accent Profile – 3,680 LF and Flush Seam Cladding trim – 300 sq. ft.); Sheet Metal – Flashing and Trim (7,900 LF); Carlisle TPO Tapered Insulated Roof System (42,078 sq. ft.); and Tile Tech Pavers (3,920 sq. ft.) Production Roofing Superintendent, Rick Bright has made the roofing portion of the project seem effortless with great organizational skills and the site leadership of Bacilio Marrufo and Juan Rodriguez as a lead with the rest of roofing crew.

The roofing crew had to work through some tough weather to maintain the schedule and completion timelines. Their dedication to getting the job done ensured the contractor had a completed roof directly behind the readiness of

the roof structure. Furthermore, the quality of workmanship ensures that this roof should last well past the warrantied timelines. Well done! Architectural Metals With a project of this magnitude and schedule, two foremen have been assigned to get the project completed within the planned time line. Foremen John Bigwater and Cristobal Rosalez have their crews working hard to stay on track despite the number of challenges they have encountered and overcome. One constant challenge is engineering and design details to maintain building air and water barrier. Keeping the building water tight with construction tolerances, deviation in framing and detailing at the tie-in at glazing and brick is no easy task. The crew works hard to ensure the details are performed properly and a completely sealed system is maintained. Supervision by Project Engineer, Mahmood (Mo) Alomar and Superintendent, James Leach ensure that the project team has the proper support and guidance towards greater success. By implementing a customized Daily Observation Report, the foremen and management team are able to track, monitor and follow each crew member’s development and growth. Interconnecting a Quality Assurance Review form designed to complement the Daily Observation Report, the foremen and management team are further able to identify where issues occurr and where updated instruction may be required to ensure continued crew growth. This format is based on a triple win scenario; the individual crew member wins with continued education and growth; the supervisors win with overall team development, detailed monitoring and management; and last but not least, the customer wins with a high-quality installation for their building. Beniamino Begay, Sheldon Brown, Wacey Phillips, JC Gordon and Christopher Santisteven provided feedback and overcame installation and material handling concerns. The Architectural Metal team has had support from Flynn’s OPEX team. In particular, Rick Lacey has provided several inspections with suggestions for development and growth. Just recently, Rick was working with James Leach, John Bigwater, and Cristobal Rosalez to instruct the site crew on tips and tricks for the ACM Shadowbox Trim application. At that time Rick also noticed and assisted in correcting some shop concerns for fabrication. With relation to safety, Flynn’s site construction team perform rigorous daily site safety inspections, mitigating hazards and ensuring a safe work environment. Whether it’s a schedule delay, managing other trades, inclement weather, safety stand down, etc. the team pushes through and incorporates backup plans to continue being productive. Our Denver Water Admin Building team remain optimistic along the road to completion. The main goals are to avoid any repetition of problems encountered at the early stages of this project. They have established methods of continuous improvement of culture across the organization, implemented a firm process by mastering the schedule, optimized construction sequence, and have capitalized on best practices.

Amazon’s Project Rose

Amazon is building a huge distribution center called “Project Rose” near the Spokane International Airport. Our scope of work for this project consists of TPO roofing (approx. 7,000 squares on multiple levels), Insulated Metal Wall Panels (approx. 1,300 ea. on multiple elevations), Light Gauge Wind Girts (approx. 28,000 LF of 14 ga. Zee and Cee wind grits) and sheet metal flashings and trim (all roof and IMP associated metals flashings and sealants.)

February was a very rough month for weather which happened to be when we made our biggest push on the IMPs. Other challenges included juggling large crew sizes. We are on an aggressive schedule, expecting to wrap-up mid to late May ’19.

BALTIMORE

Becton Dickinson Roof Replacement Submitted by Nicole Ewing

Work continues on the Becton Dickenson building in Cockeysville, MD. We are doing a roof replacement a 1,190 square demo replaced with Carlisle EPDM. The installation on this project was challenging. Our crew had to work under a lot of units and some very tight spaces.

Maryland Live! Event Center Work on the Maryland Live! Event Center in Hanover, MD includes installing 300 squares of Carlisle TPO (new construction roofing) and installing Evo ACM Panels and DriDesign Wall Panels. We are expecting to finish in May, 2019.

Nova Scotia Power Submitted by Evan Bartram

We have been awarded the Nova Scotia Power Headquarters re-roof project located in downtown Halifax. This project consists of removing 200 squares of TPO and replacing it with a 2 Ply Mod Bit system. There have been various challenges Chris and crew have had to face along the way including the high winds from the waterfront, along with public safety whereas it is right beside a busy boardwalk. NS Power was extremely pleased with Chris and his crew’s safety culture on a previous project we completed for them and feel the same way about this project so far. Our roofing team has been working closely with the metals division on this project in the removal of the aluminum composite panels and cap in order to remove and dispose of the old system.

New Look – Same Great Branch

Joint efforts between building owners Fitz Properties and Flynn have resulted in a new look for our Halifax branch! Exterior renovations included new insulated panels and featured ACP panel with signage. Interior renovations have also taken place and are nearing completion. A big thank you to all involved!

In honour of Canada’s 18th Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney Hall is currently under construction at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The new space for teaching, learning and research in set to open in the Spring. With EllisDon as the general contractor, our work consists of metal siding and composite panel installation; more specifically 2320 sq. ft. of 4MM FR Core Composite Panels and 7600 sq. ft. of 22 GA Industrial Metro Siding. We are also installing McGill model RSR-7H louvers ranging in different sizes (from 37 ¾ X 25 ¾ to 97 ¾ X 139 ½.)

South Peninsula Elementary Submitted by Evan Bartram

South Peninsula Elementary is one of several new schools looking to be completed by fall, just in time for the new school year. This project which includes 343 squares of Mod Bit, marks Clinton’s first large project as foreman. He is doing an exceptional job! The general contractor on this project is Marco, which we have worked with regularly over the past few years. Great job crew! Congratulations to the graduates of our very first “Flynn University for Professional Estimators�. FUPE 1 recently took place at The Briars in Jacksons Point, Ontario. This custom, in-house program has been specifically designed for junior and senior estimators, as well as estimating managers. The program does not focus on the technical skills of estimating, but rather the professional skills needed to be successful in these roles such as building relationships, risk management and contracts, work orders, hand-off meetings, project post-mortems, and more! 19

FIRST WINNER OF “COACHING IN ACTION” Jamie Massan, who has recently been promoted to foreman at our Edmonton branch, volunteered to attend Flynn University for Frontline Coaching 2 where he learned how to become a better coach and help his rookies beginning their careers in roofing. “It has been nice teaching the younger guys coming up and getting them interested in roofing.” When you can tell and show the guys the company is interested in them and investing in them – that makes them want to stick around,” he said.

JAMIE One of the ways he does this is by MASSAN using the Flynn Coaching App. “When I showed them the app for Jamie.Massan@flynncompanies.com the first time, they were surprised a roofing company was doing these kinds of innovative things, especially when compared to other companies they’ve worked for,” he said. Jamie commented that his experience with the app has made it easier for him and his crew to exchange information with each other. “There’s no confusion. When I’m coaching and teaching them most times one-on-one, they can go to the app on coffee time or whenever they want and look back at what I just coached them on. It’s all there. That helps them understand it better and faster.”

Avalon Mall Reconfiguration

Working with general contractor RCS, this project is an 84,400 sq. ft. 2 ply mod bit re-roof on St. John’s largest retail shopping centre above the old Sears Canada space. It is currently under demolition and undergoing a retro-fit for new retail outlets to move in for Spring 2019. Avalon Mall will also be undergoing an expansion in 2019 which consists of 112,200 sq. ft. of mod bit roofing and we were recently issued a PO for this work!

Memorial University – Core Science Facility Submitted by Darren Swinemer

In conjunction with Marco Group, the St. John’s metals crew has been hard at work on the MUN Core Science Facility. The project consists of just under 60,000 sq. ft. of insulated wall panels enclosing the 6th floor penthouse, 11,000 sq. ft. of metal siding in the plenums plus 18,000 sq. ft. of composite soffit panels. Work began mid-June and continued throughout the beautiful summer weather that St. John’s experienced this year. Fall was another story with plenty of rain, high winds (some days surpassing 140 km/h gusts) and near record snowfall accumulation as of late. Throughout this, work has progressed and will continue in to the new year.

Newfoundland Power Submitted by Dennis Butt

The crew of Mike St. Croix, Edward Clarke, Derek Butt, Gary Best, Michael Parrott (foreman), Ken Petersen (foreman) and Brandon Ward are working on a 34,400 sq. ft. 3 Ply Mod Bit re-roof for Newfoundland Power. MONCTON Kent Distribution Centre Addition Submitted by Kyle Kennedy

Flynn is back at the Kent Distribution Centre (KDC) after completing the original building in 2014. This time the crew has just completed 188,500 sq. ft. of Mod Bit roofing. At one point, two Mini-Macadens were in use to accelerate the install of the cap sheet membrane on this project. The Moncton branch has now installed 567,300 sq. ft. of roofing at this building.

Project Manager Simon Brisebois and Foreman André Langlois and his team are doing the installation of this special angle stick-built curtain wall with silicone glaze - four sides of thermos glass - at the correspondence centre of the Montreal Trudeau International Airport. Problems encountered on the site include curtain walls being installed in a leaning position, and also the lack of space being right on the tarmac!

The third phase of the project is underway and consists of replacing all fire-stop systems, back pans, aluminum panels and reinstalling the existing curtain wall finish. The work is being done on the south side of the building. Health, safety and productivity under the continuous weather fluctuations are major challenges for the workers. The first one consists of the installation of stickbuilt curtain wall on two floors that will bring in natural light from the outside into the exposition halls. COVER STORY Edmonton City Centre Mall Skylight Project Submitted by Ryan Purdy

Edmonton crews closed off 2018 completing repairs on a dome skylight in the busiest mall in downtown Edmonton. The Edmonton City Center Mall Skylight project, being completed for Oxford Properties Group, consists of new sealed units, high temp membrane, and aluminum pressure plates to the existing skylight. The full exterior of the skylight received a full facelift and looks brand new! Having the City Centre Mall open to pedestrians 24/7 and an occupied hotel directly below the skylight were some of the challenges we encountered during the renovation. Our crew needed to ensure the hotel guests were not disrupted, which is why working hours were limited to 7 a.m. – 10 a.m. on some days. It was important that we were prepared the day before, so no time was wasted during our short window. With the mall open and occupied, we also needed to protect pedestrian traffic by establishing monitored control zones directly below the skylight. 27

Oxford Properties was extremely happy with our performance onsite and that the work was completed with no complaints from the hotel or the tenants in the mall. They were also really impressed with our commitment to safety and the measures put in place that allowed us to complete the work on schedule. Oxford Properties has since provided us with information regarding work on the other skylights throughout the mall with budget pricing being provided by our estimating department. It appears we have started to establish a partnership with Oxford Properties in Edmonton and fingers crossed for our next project. Excellent job!

At Fortinos in Oakville we have been busy pulling up the loose laid EPDM, going over the existing insulation with a SopraSmart Board and torch cap. We’re using the InvertaPress for the DuoTack. We did a whole 52 square roof area in peel and stick cap sheet. Due to all the penetrations, we experimented with new watertights (night seals) and picture-framing methods.

Niagara Falls Entertainment Centre 29

Expected to open in the Summer of 2019, the new Niagara Entertainment Center which is directly connected to the Hilton Hotel will be a 5000-seat theater playing host to some of the world’s largest performers. Our work includes 661 squares of cut up roof with no ground staging area and winds that reached 140km/h!

OTTAWA Ottawa Confederation Line: OLRT The Ottawa light Rail Transit is (OLRT) is Ottawa’s largest transportation infrastructure project since the building of the Rideau Canal. Working with the Rideau Transit Group, our architectural panels and glazing work on the 2.5 km tunnel includes installing approximately 82,000 sq. ft. of STX rainscreen porcelain panels (4,500 panels of 3.5mm and 5.6 mm porcelain panels); and installing approximately 95,000 sq. ft. of Accumet 2000 rainscreen system (2,750 panels – 4 mm Composite FR). Installation includes air/vapour barrier, sub framing, insulation, flashings and miscellaneous items. Work at the Blair, Cyrville and Tremblay Stations is complete. Work at the remaining stations (St. Laurent, Hurdman, UOttawa, Lees, Lyon, Parliament, Rideau, Bayview, Pimsi and Tunney) is in progress. This project began in June 2016 and is expected to finish in June 2019.

SUDBURY Green Roofing in Sudbury? As part of the renovations in Sudbury, we are in the process of installing a new metal roof as well as updating the entrance and windows. Work is being completed by Luc Gagnon, Lanny Rideout, Mike Dubeau, Suny Volf, Paul Lalonde and Josh Derive.

Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations – Secondary Stack Installation Submitted by Alex Boterman

Our crews had a three-week window to complete the full insulated wall and roof assemblies prior to this sampling port being hoisted 155’ in the air on the stack. Three of our cladding crews were up to the task and completed it the morning of the lift. Site crews included Foreman Steph Dufour, Don Rollin and Luke Gagnon with support from Brian Marsolais, Shawn Hawkins, Lanny Rideout, Andre Jutras, and Mike Lazowick.

Canadore College

In conjunction with M. Sullivan & Son Ltd., our Sudbury glazing crew’s work on Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario includes Kawneer curtain wall with 12” caps, all at different locations. With the help of TSC, the installation of the curved curtain wall frame was very easy without any guess work required.

LONDON Cascades Containerboard Packaging Submitted by Rui Medeiros

We did 245 squares of 60 mil TPO overlay at Cascades Containerboard Packaging in St. Mary’s, Ontario. The scope of was to remove the Modified Bitumen cap sheet and BUR, while keeping the remains of the existing system in place. We started this project toward the end of 2018, and the weather turned bad quickly causing a two-week delay. The weather took a break, and we got to work we started to remove the existing system to discover it had to be removed to the existing deck and replaced with new vapour barrier and insulation. Replacing the system meant we needed to make sure we had materials on-site and document every area with photos and layouts. Great work and safety on this project, team!

Chatham Casino Submitted by Carlos Medeiros

Jim Furtado and his crew started at the Chatham Casino on November 19, 2018 and finished in January 2019. The GC is BLT Construction Services Inc from Toronto, and the owner is Gateway Casinos. We installed 495 squares of Modified Bitumen with a 25-year warranty. Weather was definitely a challenge at first, but we got a break with some mild weather which allowed us to get caught up within a very tight timeline. The owner installed a live camera on site and we could view all the progress. Jimmy and crew completed this job with a great safety record! Great job, guys! Flynn FLASH | Winter/Spring 2019

LONDON Formet Industries

After five months working out of town helping our Ottawa branch, Donz Dadson’s crew returned home and are now completing work at Formet Industries in St. Thomas, Ontario. This project consists of preventative roof repairs through four sections of the roof areas. This one called for a lot of miles of walking to our sections of roofs and up and down the ladders. The crew has been following all of the Formet Industries’ safety rules as well as Flynn’s. Keep up the great work!

Food Basics Submitted by Carlos Medeiros

Our roofing work on the grocery store chain included 379 squares of re-roofing the whole building. Work was completed in January. We removed the existing roof down to the existing deck, adhered vapour barrier and mechanically fastened insulation with fiberboard. All the perimeters were picture framed with included colply base sheet and cap sheet. Challenges on this project were that the existing roof which was very fragile. We constantly checked the roof for splits before the end of the day. We also worked over the store while it was in operation. Danny Camara and the crew did a great job communicating with the store as to where they were working. Keep up the great work!

87 Peter St. is a new condo in the Entertainment District in Toronto’s downtown core. Flynn Toronto’s architectural metals division worked with Menkes Developments Ltd. to provide 12,000 sq. ft. of 3mm thick Shiplap Aluminum Panels at the podium level, 5,000 sq. ft. of Axiom 3 Aluminum Plate Panels at ground level, 330 pieces of “Art Work” on the west elevation (along Peter St.) and 150 sq. ft. of 45 mil TPO roofing membrane (installed by our Toronto roofing service crew) Project Manager Nicholas Valencia says, “Overall this project was well-planned from the beginning to end, with a strong crew on-site keeping it all together. The ‘Art Work’ elevation was something we have never done in Toronto – so no matter how much we planned, we would only see the results come to fruition when we started. We left our mark in the Entertainment District in downtown Toronto for many years to come.”

FLYNN MANUFACTURING Tower E

On Jan 9th, 2019 the Flynn Manufacturing team completed the 7,557th (and final) frame for the Tower E project in Edmonton. At 68 floors, Tower E (also known as Stantec Tower) is the largest UCW project in Flynn’s history! After starting production over two years ago, completing production on schedule was cause for celebration, and a testament to the dedicated efforts of the design, drafting, coordination and manufacturing teams. In addition to having a truly international supply chain, the project also had a wide variety of frame types and sequencing requirements, all of which was coordinated by Praveen Anto and Edwin Ranon, allowing the shop to stay on target from start to finish. The building is a multipurpose tower the heart of Edmonton’s ICE District, featuring both premiere office and residential space. It is the third building in the last 10 years that Flynn has completed in Edmonton – including the Rogers Centre and EPCOR Tower. We’re looking forward to the next one!

TORONTO 120 & 130 Adelaide Reclad SubMitted by Ahmed Fahmy

Back in April 2017, Flynn was awarded the job to reclad the 120 & 130 Adelaide West buildings in the heart of downtown Toronto. New glass would enhance thermal performance in addition to giving the 60-year-old buildings a fresh, younger look. Flynn accepted the challenge to take on the job as the general contractor - a role which was new to Flynn, but not difficult given our experience and abilities. Installing 450,000 sq. ft. of glass in the form of 25,000 cassettes within 24-month requires meticulous planning. In order to achieve what Flynn was contracted to do, we decided would have to work in three shifts, 24-hours a day, five days a week; this was in addition to a floating logistics shift overlapping the mid-day and night shifts to ensure all shifts are continuously supplied with material requirements to keep 100 men working and productive. This very tough and demanding task was taken on by two of our Project Coordinators, Quinn Lopez and Nasser Al Khessi who coordinated with Logistics Shift Forman, Mike Dunwoodie and onsite stores in charge, Chelsea Dawe, and looked after controlling the flow of materials into and out of the 25,000 sq. ft. off-site storage facility, which houses all the produced cassettes and components required to complete the project.

TORONTO The Richmond-Adelaide Center Reclad Con’t

To complete this work while the buildings remain fully occupied with tenants, an innovative access plan had to be created and specially designed for the project. The answer was 18,000 sq. ft. of 25-ft. high protective decking which secures safe passage and usage of the building entrances as well as the surrounding areas and restaurant patios. We also created an independent working platform to house the daily supplied materials as well as two trails for the workers use (also a toilets trailer and a fully covered on-site storage facility housing the consumables and tools for everyday use). To be able to access the buildings and strip them of their old skin and reclad them with their long awaited new glazed skin, 30 Mast Climber working platforms and 12 swing stages had to be deployed and installed surrounding the buildings to ensure safe and efficient access to the over 150 men working the three different shifts, including multiple sub-contractors closely supervised by three Foremen, Bill Dimond, Adam Wszolek & Ian Sammy, and a General Foreman, Larry Dawe. To keep such a massive beast of a project running safely, two- safety specialists, Dwight Smith and Michael Rabin, have joined Flynn glazing working on day and night shifts. Read more about safety measures on this project on the following page. The idea is not only to complete the project safely, but to the best quality the industry can provide. Therefore, a dedicated quality control team has been assembled including QC Engineer Jalal Shirazi) and two QC inspectors, Avi Raveh and Jayson Angeles, who coordinate with all parties as well as the consultants and architects to ensure that the works are handed over in compliance to the project design, specification and to the client’s satisfaction and according to the project quality plan which has been established in the early days of the project. Servicing all the above as well as the project management team, is project administrator Matt Tomaszews ensuring that daily, weekly and monthly reports generated collect the required information from team members above. Re-Thinking High Angle Rescue Procedures at 120-130 Adelaide Submitted by Michael Rabin

Revised high angle rescue procedures and training have improved the performance of the Flynn Rescue Teams’ timing, ease of operation and efficiency. This success was prompted by the dedicated collective efforts of the entire Flynn team at 120-130 Adelaide, comprised of: glaziers, ironworkers, project management and the site safety specialists working together to improve the Flynn safety culture. High angle rescue drills were completed on site by all shifts between Sept 26 to 28, 2018. Although the initial drill results were satisfactory, numerous questions and issues arose in-an-effort to improve the efficiency and organization of the rescue drills. The Flynn health and safety management team began to improve the process with an initial meeting of site safety management specialists, team commanders and lead-hands, to communicate suggestions, concerns and critiques, in order to improve the procedures. These observations and suggestions were invaluable and resulted in positive gains in improving the preparation of equipment and storage and security of the rescue system. Due to the size, scale and variable site-specific aspects of the project, additional professional and on-site consultation was utilized from Flynn safety equipment providers and the input the world class high angle rescue consultants. As a result, improvements were applied to modify the existing rescue system procedure and adding a simplified approved back-up system. With instruction from Flynn Rescue Specialist Avi Raveh, two additional training sessions were completed for each shift, between November 3 to December 5, 2018. The first drill familiarized the rescue teams with the modified equipment and the second drill provided a hands-on high angle rooftop rescue simulation. Team confidence was clearly-evident with improved trial set-up times of approximately 60-70%. Shout out to Flynn safety, project management and rescue teams for a fantastic effort! Our London service department completed seven re-roofs for Hydro One within a very demanding schedule. All roofs were sized between 7 squares – 15 squares. They worked professionally and safely in extreme conditions wearing FR Hydro suits impressing our BGIS escort. They also played a big part within the London branch receiving our National ‘COR’ Standard certification awarded in September, 2018!

This job was a Tremco hot rubberized asphalt 2 Ply membrane replacement at approximately 60 squares. We had an initial hurdle and delayed start when the crane lifting our equipment to the roof broke down on route to the job. Once we got rolling, the crew came together to make up for the delayed start and finished the job well before the deadline. Good work team!

All work was completed on schedule and the crew was commended on their workmanship and attention to safety. Their attention to safety is first class and gives me confidence. As you know, the proximity to high voltage in Hydro One stations makes these jobs that much more dangerous. Transcona Library was an architecturally challenging project for Winnipeg’s metal crew, led by foreman Robert Hogue. One challenge the crew faced was the installation of 18-foot vertical wall panels and large angled soffit panels. Flynn was able to utilize TSC services. They scanned, modeled, produced panel cards, and provided Flynn with an installation roadmap which helped save time and produce a visually stunning facade. Flynn was able to successfully and safely install all 76 squares of AMC panels thanks to the effort put forth by the crew. The glazing scope of the contract called for a seamless curtain wall design, complete with phantom swing doors, phantom vents, and 4-sided SSG curtainwall for all four exterior elevations. The interior was designed with a similar aesthetic in mind, with floor-to-ceiling glazing units weighing as much as 465 lbs.! Tossing and standing the glass was an interesting challenge due to the low ceiling height, but our glazing crew handled it safely and efficiently.

The unique shape of the panels and the clean lines of the curtain wall combine for an eye-catching building, thanks to the great finishing work by our metals and glazing crews.

WINNIPEG Star Building Products

The construction for the new Star Building Products store and warehouse is currently underway in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Flynn is working alongside Winnipeg founded general contractor Concord Projects to complete 371 squares of Kingspan insulated metal panels and 19 squares of Accument panels. The nine-man crew led by foreman Phil Bonneteau worked long hours including weekends to meet the deadline set by the GC. Star’s new facility which is being built on their 4.5-acre property will consist of a new shipping office which will be 1,800 sq. ft. The cold-storage facility will be approximately 8,000 sq. ft. and will be used to store building materials which needed protection from the elements. The Phase 3 building will be 54,000 sq. ft. in size and will include an 18,500 sq. ft. retail store, a 14,000 sq. ft. drive-through warehouse, a 9,000 sq. ft. receiving area and 2,500 sq. ft. of main-floor office space. The crew has received rave reviews by the GC and the owner. Phil and the crew have exemplified the Flynn Way by demonstrating a strong line of communication with the GC and owner directly from the frontline, exceeding the GC’s safety standards, and providing the customer with a high quality finished product! SASKATOON Alt Hotel

The Alt Hotel, in conjunction with Bockstael Construction, is a multi-scope new construction project in downtown Saskatoon at the River Landing. Being both downtown and by the river made the delivery of materials challenging. Our work included 11,000 sq. ft. of SBS roofing, 3,000 sq. ft. of green roofing, and 26,100 sq. ft. of vertical and horizontal expansion joints. This was a LEAN construction project with a pull plan weekly. Heavy coordination with all trades was crucial. With a Green roof dirt installation on the third floor (taken just before the sedum). condo being built beside us, we had a 12” gap between sites forcing us to work alongside other trades not associated with our project!

Our scope of work included removing the existing roof to expose roof deck, installing new dens deck in duo-tack, peel and stick soprema 130 S VB, two layers of 3” and 2” iso and crickets in duo-tack, smartboard in duo-tack and torch applying 250 GR cap sheet. What made the project interesting and challenging is the special square duo-tack pattern that was specified by the consultant RMIS to be installed in adhering the dens deck, insulation and smart base board. The pattern could not be a soprema s-serpentine pattern – it had to be a square pattern in specified bead spacings and thickness. Upon the cut test, the consultant was very impressed with the level of detail achieved by the crew and Sasktel themselves were very impressed with the excellent job our crew did installing the roofing details. Our safety officer Dale Nagy was so impressed with our crew that he drove to the project site and helped our crew during his site inspection. Williston Senior Independent Facility

Work at the Williston Senior Independent Facility involves installing slope insulation on OSB Sheathing roof deck, 2” Polyiso, Smartboard and torch cap. The biggest challenge on this project from the onset has been the schedule delay from the GC in turning over the roof for installation. The delay from the fall to winter has been drying the OSB deck before installing any roof. Foreman Patricia Richotte accepted the challenge and tried ways to dry the roof from having insulated tarps and heaters to mop buckets! The crew would then install roof the following day after having the OSB deck dry. The coordination for daily T&M for drying the roof and following safety parameters has been meticulously performed by the crew. Patricia has been a go-getter and being the only female foreman in Regina, she has made big strides in a short time. The roofing process has been a challenge, but Patricia and her crew have been able to meet production goals on the project.

REGINA TD Bank: Manor on Hamilton

Our Hamilton crew pictured below was busy working on three roof sections at the TD Bank totaling 314 squares. The roofs were located 30 storeys from the ground level. Crews removed the BUR roof to expose 2 ply vapor- barrier. They reused the existing rock and installed new base and cap sheet in the inverted system, new 2” XPS insulation and drainage mat, new filter fabric and they reused existing ballast. From the very beginning of the project, exceptional coordination with Colliers was required. Our crew ensured all the safety parameters where followed from PPE to protecting the interior space of the building on the floor we accessed to get to the roof. We rolled down carpet approximately 80’ from the elevator to the roof access door. We had Garlock guardrails system at the edge of the roof, tool lanyards, and hard-hat lanyards. We also had the portable toilet on the roof for the crew. We handled materials every two weeks bringing down garbage and hoisting materials up on Saturday’s and Sunday’s of the work week. We needed street closure permits to allow access to the 150-ton crane. The crew did an exceptional job in ensuring the production and safety goals were met. CRCA 2019 Roofing Canada Award Win We are pleased to share we have won the Canadian Contractors Roofing Association’s 2019 Roofing Canada Award for our work on the Jim Pattinson Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. In addition to receiving an award at the annual conference on April 15th in Montreal, the project will be featured in the fall/winter edition of the Roofing Canada Magazine. About the Project: Our Flynn Saskatoon branch teamed up with Graham Construction to build the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan (renamed the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital during construction.) This state-of-the art facility opening in 2019 will provide a 176-beds for general pediatrics, heart, cancer, psychiatry, and speech and hearing treatments for the children of Saskatchewan. Flynn is the total building envelope contractor for this project. Our roofing work consisted of 16 different roof sections of various sizes totaling 85,000 sq. ft. Flynn installed these roof areas comprised mainly of Steel deck, ½” DensDeck, 2 Ply Type IV glass felts mop applied, various thicknesses and taper packages of Carlisle Polyiso adhered w/ adhesive, 60 Mil EPDM w/Ballast, and over 10,000 pavers. With several roof locations not accessible by a tower crane for lifting products, and minimal options for tie-off points, our crews relied on the well thought out logistics and safety plans put in place. The locations where a tower crane could be utilized required constant scheduling and planning with dozens of trades requiring the crane at any given time of day (and with ballasted roofs, this was significant.) Tapered packages were very complex and time consuming as many modifications were required on site. Close coordination with the general contractor and other trades was necessary, especially with HDA Saskatoon’s specifications having several nuances considered very in-depth. Several mechanical plenums were constructed on this project, and a 2 Ply SBS roofing system was needed for the waterproofing. These were small, somewhat confined spaces that took great expertise in sequencing and safety to complete efficiently. 2 Ply SBS was also utilized for the planters on the parkade and in the kids play area. 11,000 sq. ft. of hot rubber waterproofing was applied on the parkade ramps. Many scopes could not move forward without this work completed, so demanding schedules in place had to be adhered to. Roof skylights were also included in Flynn’s scope of work providing natural light for the rooms situated below. This was a new learning experience for our roofing crews. The Jim Pattinson Children’s Hospital is the new home for the STARS Helicopter Ambulance, with a landing pad located on the top level of the hospital. Above and beyond the roofing components themselves, this project is an iconic step for Saskatchewan Health. The number of Flynn family that have had direct involvement on this project, whether through consultation or direct hands-on work, spans from coast to coast, resulting in a true team effort. Project Coordinator Allan Barnhill said, “To be a part of such an innovative project and undertaking is truly phenomenal. Flynn donated much of its time, money, and energy into charitable events such as the Christmas/Santa clause display for all the children in RUH. Gifts are handed out and large Christmas displays are placed atop our roof for all the kids to view! This project is truly a special one for the community of Saskatchewan. The countless hours and effort the Flynn team put towards it is why it should be the roof of the year!”

CALGARY Flynn Calgary Comes Together to Support Lisa Hawkins’ Fight Against Breast Cancer Submitted by Flynn Calgary

In 2009, Lisa Hawkins moved to Canada with her husband, Alan, and her two children. Alan became a dedicated member of our service department. He was diagnosed with skin cancer and sadly passed away in 2013. There was an opening at our Calgary branch that Lisa was qualified for, and accepting the offer meant Lisa and her kids could remain in Canada. She became Calgary’s new Branch Administrator (now Executive Administrator) and a beloved member of the Flynn Family working closely with many people across the entire branch. In late 2018, Lisa was diagnosed with breast cancer and has had to be off work since February 2019 for her treatments. As a branch, we wanted to show our support by coming together to start a Go Fund Me page first announced by Dan Sims (Vice President, Alberta) during our annual safety meeting in March. To date, this page has raised $6,300. We also put together a “Get Well Video” that included photos of some of our field workers pictured below, and a video of people around the office sending Lisa best wishes on her road to recovery. Brian Theroux (Business Development) also organized a head and beard shaving event. CALGARY Gateway at West District Submitted by Colin Swirles

Gateway at West District - two multi-purpose buildings with main floor retail and seven floors of residential condominiums - epitomizes the “Total Building Envelope” saying on all of our business cards! This marks our third multi-scope project with developer and general contractor Truman Homes, with more to follow. We have developed a unique and stable relationship with them, as their COO Tony Trutina has said to me, “We’re like family.” Our work here includes 37,700 sq. ft. of roofing, with a main roof on each building, seven halos and roofing on 16 separate patios. Waterproofing includes 60,000 sq. ft. of hot rubber, comprised of four different systems, 30,000 sq. ft. of urethane balcony coatings and 1600 sq. ft. of live green roof at the parkade level. Our architectural metals division is putting up 16,200 sq. ft. of ACM panels, 68,500 of HF cladding and 31,000 of cement board. Glazing consists of 91,600 sq. ft. of Alumicor stick built curtain wall, approximately 200 Sun View sliding patio doors and 105 Aluicor swing doors. The team photo has too many names to mention, the foreman are as follows, glazing’s Scott Tanner and Rimantis Branzikas, metal’s Quinton Macintyre, Roofing’s John Greenwood, and waterproofing’s Sean Clark and Kyle Wenzel. These men in conjunction our safety team, PM’s PC’s etc. have done and are doing and amazing job! The overall teamwork between all scopes has been very fruitful for all of us, daily planning and organizing through a team site office has made this job a great success so far, the team moral is fantastic, I can only see that aspect improving as we continue. We began glazing in late May 2018 and expect to be finished sometime in early summer 2019. So a long project, we had some weather challenges with 3 big snowfalls in the late part of fall, at one point there was 20 inches of snow on the roof! I would like to personally thank everyone involved in this already successful project and the many more to follow with Truman homes. I would also like to thank our Ryan Purdy for the awesome photos.

Pool Players Invited to Las Vegas Submitted by Angie Butler

Every year the American Poolplayers Association (APA) hosts the Amateur World Pool Championships where regional champions from all over Canada, the United States, and Japan are invited to participate. The most recent tournament was held at the Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas where Andrew Fish and Daniel Fish from our Flynn Edmonton branch participated in the 8-Ball World Championship Tournament! Andrew and Daniel play on a team in Spruce Grove, Alberta named “8-Ball Xpress.” The tournament takes place in three large rooms, with over 300 pool tables required to accommodate both practicing and playing purposes. There were 713 teams with eight team members per team competing for the grand prize of $25,000. The APA used a handicap system so that players of all levels could participate competitively. Skill levels range from 2 to 7 with 2 being the lowest and 7 being the highest. Daniel is a skill level 4 and Andrew is a skill level 7. When playing each round, five members of each team play a match where the combined skill level for each team cannot exceed 23. Whereas the tournament was one week, teams were instantly eliminated once beaten. There were 3-4 rounds of 5 matches every day, and a round of matches would take up to 4 hours and 45 minutes before going to “sudden death.” Playing started as early as 8 AM and matches went into the early hours of the morning. 8-Ball Xpress lasted until Wednesday evening finishing in 385th place out of the 713 teams entered. When asked what he enjoys most about the sport, Andrew said he grew up watching snooker on TV which developed into a passion for playing. When he started going to pubs as a teenager, the main focus switched to playing pool. Daniel, who has been playing for roughly 18 months now, was drafted in to the 8-Ball and 9-Ball teams last year and has recognized a natural aptitude for the game. He is pleased with the way his skills have developed in a relatively short time and wants to keep improving. 49

Lakeland College

The scope of work included removing the existing glass, installing a new Kawneer 2000 skylight frame onto the existing framing and installing new glass, and flashing, which consisted of approx. 5,200 sq. ft. of glass (292) sealed units. We began back in the fall with the expectation of having the new framing and glass complete by Christmas break. We glazed the last unit five days early. Flynn glazing , FIL, and Flynn service worked together on this project as a complete team! Since the college was in use, we had to schedule our replacements around classroom time, fortunately the college was very accommodating. Of course being true to nature we had to have a couple of very large snowfalls during construction which being roof work, tends to slow progress. Thanks to Zsolt and his crew, FIL and the roofing crews for working together as a team, and thanks to James Sheehan and crew for doing as great of a job as the GC did!

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE TEAM 2018 TASK – Yvon Remillard The OPEX TASK Program was created to promote the communication of good ideas within the company from branch to branch. Every year the OPEX team selects an outstanding submission and showcases it to all of Flynn. This year we are recognizing Yvon Remillard from the Edmonton branch for designing and building a setup station for cutting fiberglass plate. Cutting fiberglass plate creates dust, which means operators needed to work in a separate location outside with facemasks and full body coveralls. The new workstation (designed and built by Yvon) has an attached vacuum which removes the dust particles and allows the operator to work in the common fabrication area. This improves the efficiency of the task, while keeping safety as a priority.

Flynn Expands into the Waterproofing Market Flynn Group of Companies is a total building envelope, offering cladding, roofing and glazing throughout North America. Many of our roofing crews perform waterproofing work, but waterproofing is a large enough market to be treated as its own focused scope. In Canada alone, it is a 250 million annual industry. That is why we are launching dedicated waterproofing crews and adding this scope to our total envelope. To ensure we are successful in growing our waterproofing company-wide, OPEX (Operations Excellence team) is supporting the creation of a waterproofing committee. OPEX exists to share best practices within Flynn and the committee will be doing that for waterproofing. The committee is led by Frankie Savage, Waterproofing Manager of Toronto and Tyler Mills, Waterproofing Manager of Calgary. Both Frankie and Tyler are experienced in the waterproofing industry and run their own seasoned crews in their respective branches. As co-chairs of the committee they will be able to share their experience and knowledge to help other branches launch their own waterproofing focused crews. “Waterproofing needs to live apart from roofing so we can have teams who are fully trained in waterproofing, including knowledge of manufacturers and application methods. This will allow us to provide the quality product our customers expect from Flynn,” said Frankie Savage, Waterproofing Manager. “The waterproofing committee will help ensure that our quality service is the same throughout all of our branches.” “I wish we had had the waterproofing committee when I started building our new waterproofing crews. KELOWNA Service You Can Bank On Submitted by Chris Sitter and Kim Gaskil

Our Service crew, led by Foreman Justyn Barber, recently completed the Kelowna branch’s first tar and gravel project in quite some time! Not only was the roofing system out of the ordinary for these times, but it was also situated in a heritage building in Nelson, BC that has housed a local bank for close to 120 years! The building contains a vault that hasn’t been able to be opened in anyone’s memory. Historically, the bank manager lived on premises, and since Kelowna Service Crew posing with the DFSA from left to right: the vault was there, the building was a target for robberies. Our crew was trained in asbestos abatement for this project, and a disaster restoration company was brought in to remove asbestos and dispose of it safely. Along with coordinating the asbestos abatement, there were two other subcontractors hired by Flynn; one for scaffolding and the other for HVAC. Did we mention the location of this project was right across the road from the local WorkSafe BC office? Did we also mention that we won the Don Flynn Safety Award? Once the existing roof was removed, we installed a new system that included a self-adhered vapour barrier, adhered insulation, mopped fiberboard and 4 Ply tar and gravel. New metal flashings, windows, and a skylight unit were also installed. A special shout out goes to Jordy Neilson, Robert Proulx and Chandler Neilson from Vancouver Glazing Service for their professional assistance on this project. All in all, this was a challenging out of town project that required considerable coordination and strict attention to safety. Our field crew and office team stepped up to the plate to work together to make it a success! Congratulations to our team on a job well done.

“The Brooklyn” is a high-rise building that will be up in Kelowna within the next year or two. Mission Group is using an old, existing building as their show suite for now as we try to keep the interior dry up to the time of construction…but it is in bad shape! Mission Group has become a great customer for us and we are happy that we have the opportunity to work for them, and it helps keep us top of mind when the new build goes out for tender!

Delta Grand

Kelowna started service at the Delta Grand recently. The national customer is Silver Birch. They had not received very good service from their previous roofing contractor. Ashton McDonald (pictured above, left) and Cory Stevenson (right) were able to stop a leak that had been active for nearly 18 years! The customer was extremely happy because until now, they could only rent the suite out whenever it wasn’t raining. Now they will be able to generate income rain or shine.

Third Time is a Charm Submitted by Kim Gaskil

Magala Place is a multi-family residential condominium complex. We submitted a budget price to the Strata Corporation to assist them with their financial planning. Low and behold they sent us a PO for the project, which we politely declined. We then submitted a price based on the SBS specifications provided to us…and received our second PO, which again we politely declined. Operations Manager John Powers met with the Strata Council and educated them about Left to Right: Mohammad Nasar, Henok Okbamichael, Billy Pilkington, Mat Flynn, the risk of fire on a wood frame Bryan Park and photographer, Dwayne Stoski (foreman) building and provided a quotation for a TPO system (surely the substantial cost saving didn’t hurt!). We received our third purchase order shortly thereafter and this one we gratefully accepted! Once awarded, the project has gone smoothly. Some may even say it has moved forward with less issues than the tender process! Our team, led by Dwayne Stoski, did a wonderful job of managing this project. It can often be challenging to do a re-roof on a residential building, especially when multiple families with different schedules are involved. We erected a scaffold tower to remove debris safely and avoid any unnecessary interior access. The project has proceeded to completion with zero issues or complaints. VICTORIA St Andrews Presbyterian Church Submitted by Gary Stride

All eyes are on Mark O’Hanley (metals foreman) and his crew on this assignment, likely the most prominent and visible construction site in the downtown core of Victoria, BC. Mark and his crew first visited this landmark site in the fall of 2015 to replace the steep slope roof at the west side of the church. They have returned to finish the job. Mark may have the title of CNHS-SRRS (“Canadian National Historic Site - Steep Roof Replacement Specialist”) added to his name as he has been assigned these types of projects in the past. History - This iconic church in the heart of downtown Victoria was built in 1889. There are reportedly 1,000,000 red clay bricks incorporated into the build, many of these may have originated as ballast in the holds of the early sailing ships arriving in the west coast. The massive timbers in the roof are accompanied by iron tension rods, the precursor to reinforced concrete posttensioned suspended slab construction. This detail allows for great spans of overhead structural members, minimizing the requirement for underlying support columns, particularly advantageous in the Nave, Presbytery, Alter and Sanctuary of the cathedral. In 1890, the year of his start-up, there were 36 customers. How times have changed! McMicking previously introduced electricity to Victoria, starting with three outdoor lamps in the downtown core, making Victoria one of the earliest communities to have electricity and the first in Canada to have commercially available electric lights. In 1886, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church became the second church in all of North America to boast electric lights.

Safety first! - As is often the case in our line of work, fall protection was particularly challenging on this project. The steep slopes and period architecture paired with the height of the structure complicated our team / self-rescue capabilities. As such, the City of Victoria fire department was called upon to satisfy the completion of our “rescue of a fallen worker” component of our fall protection planning responsibilities. The fire department rescue crew (twelve members and two trucks) visited the site early on to evaluate their rescue procedures. Their rescue equipment was deployed and was found to be effective in reaching all areas of concern.

VICTORIA Esquimalt Graving Dock Submitted by Gary Stride

Matt Fisher and his metals team, and Ross MacKay and his line-up, have been assigned the metals and roofing aspects of this new construction sub-station at this busy maritime ship repair facility. The Esquimalt Graving Dock (EGD) is the largest non-military drydock on the west coast of the Americas. It is massive; measuring in at 357.5 m Left to right: Samantha Mann, McKenzie McDonough, Matt Fisher (architectural long X 41.15 m wide X 12.19 m deep metals foreman), Thomas Cordner, Ross MacKay (roofing foreman), Dean Craggs (1172’ X 135’ X 40’). The mass of the seawater within the EGD when flooded at high tide is 405,328,479 pounds (202,604 tons). That’s enough water to fill 72 Olympic sized swimming pools. If we were to fill this with 500 ml (16 ounce) single serve bottled water purchased at your local grocery store, we would likely have to fork over $500,000,000 to your neighbourhood grocer. Good thing seawater is cheap. If each of the 6,332,935 cubic feet of water in the flooded EGD could be placed end to end, it would span the distance from San Diego, California to Seattle, Washington (1200 miles). The shipbuilding industry on the West Coast has recently entered a renaissance. Shipyards are scrambling to keep up. The infrastructure is aging, and demand is at an all time high. The EGD is no exception to this resurgence, and there is a long wait list to get booked into the drydock. The increased pressures on the EGD combined with its aging facilities has necessitated much needed infrastructure upgrades. At the time of writing, the EGD accommodates a Canadian Coast Guard Research vessel and a naval warship from New Zealand, both in for a refit. A recently purchased ship from Greece renamed the Northern Sea Wolf, is tied up dockside (to the rear of the crew in the photo above) and is nearing completion of a refit to bring the ship up to Transport Canada and BC Ferries standards. This ship will be put into service on a northern route providing ferry service to north coastal BC.

The Celebrity Cruise Line’s MILLENNIUM sits high and dry in the Graving Dock undergoing an annual re-fit in preparation for the upcoming cruise season. With an overall length of 294 m (954’), there is still over 60 m (200’) of unused space in the drydock.

VICTORIA UVIC District Energy Plant Submitted by Chris Sitter

The District Energy Plant at the University of Victoria (UVIC) was built to consolidate the heating and production of hot water on the campus. UVIC currently has three boiler plants of various vintages (1968, 1974 and 1994) and these are nearing the end of their serviceable life. The District Energy Plant will service 32 of the buildings on campus plus an additional three buildings, with the capability to expand service to future construction.

Constructed to achieve LEED Gold Certification, the plant will realize a 10% to 12% reduction in fuel usage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6500 tonnes per year, consistent with the Sustainability Action Plan Campus Operations 2014 – 2019, UVIC’s environmental governing policy document. Rainwater from the roof will be diverted to a nearby “stone rain garden.” Ten trees were removed in preparation for the build; thirty will be planted to achieve carbon reduction goals. This multi-scope project includes glazing, metal roofing, architectural metal panels, KalZip wall panels, T & G Cedar siding and a small amount of SBS roofing. Grant Rosling (glazing foreman) and his crew are fabricating and installing the glazing components on the north and west elevations. The architecture of this building intentionally “shows off” the inner workings of the boiler room within.

VANCOUVER It’s in the Game Submitted by Jonathan Simpson

We are currently working on EA Sports Vancouver, EA’s largest and oldest studio which employs 1300 people and is home to the world’s largest video game test operation. Our project consists of 53,700 sq. ft. of roofing: Approximately 33,700 sq. ft. of an inverted 2 Ply SBS system with various overburden and 20,000 sq. ft. of a 2 Ply SBS conventional roofing system. The project has been difficult to coordinate as we needed to cater to the customer’s needs, which has included lots of night shifts of tear off and deliveries at all hours. There is around 20,000 sq. ft. of interior protection being installed while we are doing the demo of the old roof so that we do not damage any of the sensitive equipment with debris and dust. We are also installing several hundred linear feet of ALSAN RS membrane tying into an old skylight system which cannot be removed.

W1 Marine Gardens Submitted by Jose Goncalves

Flynn was awarded the contract to supply and install 42,000 sq. ft. of Aluminum Composite Panels, 12,000 sq. ft. of Longboard Metal Panels, 2,800 sq. ft. of Preformed Metal Cladding and 3,000 sq.ft. of Mechanical Penthouse Screen at W1 Marine Gardens. This development by Concord Pacific consists of two residential towers at 27 and 21-storeys containing 512 market strata units, and a seven-storey residential building with a 37-space childcare facility at grade and 70 secured market rental housing units, for a total of 582 residential units. The project started with Craig MacRitchie estimating and being awarded the go ahead for Flynn to proceed. Kimiko Nakano took the baton and proceeded to generate the shop drawings, which in turn provided Del Hernandez the opportunity to do material takeoffs for the overall project. With material quantities on hand, the baton was again passed onto Lisa Morham and Jessica Xue to contact suppliers, issue purchase orders and secure materials. With the preplanning work initiated and underway, it was up to Chris Rathy to put together a team under the site leadership of Azmir Hadzovic with Barry Hoyano to carry the project through to completion. In order to do so, the services of TSC were enlisted and Monika Sudol and her team including Daljit Singh and Roy Liu used the scan data provided by Bruce Leckie to generate the panels cards to be used by Adam Hodgins, Dwayne Chenier and Rod Sass from Flynn Winnipeg for the fabrication and supply of the Aluminum Composite Panels. The end result of such a team effort spanning three provinces, is a three-building structure in the Cambie corridor in Vancouver where Flynn already has a strong presence with prior projects completed in the area. SFU (Simon Fraser University) Burnaby Campus Plaza Renewal Submitted by Dennis Griffin

In conjunction with Ledcor Construction, this project includes the renewal of the plaza waterproofing membrane to an Arthur Erickson building commissioned in 1963. The work will be performed to the Academic Quadrangle, Convocation Mall and Transportation Centre at Simon Fraser University. The entire renewal is divided into three separate contracts for Flynn, which has us installing 250,000 sq. ft. of 3 Ply Siplast SBS with extensive PMMA work. Daryl Conner and his crew started working on phase 1 in May 2018 with phase 2 beginning in early 2019. The expected duration for all phases is more than two years. The project comes with many interesting challenges. With significant occupied space of the AQ Building below the plaza level, and with this being an operating University, the need to keep that space dry is critical. The GC has hoarded the entire plaza while the renewal is ongoing which is great for roofing in lower mainland BC in the winter. Developing site specific procedures and safe work plans to allow us to work in such and environment was necessary. With this being primarily a waterproofing renewal project with the demolition and finish tile performed by others, we’ve had to work closely with the GC and other trades. As anyone who is familiar with this type of restoration knows, when dealing with 50+ year old concrete, you never know what to expect! Concrete renewal presents constant challenges. With a waterproofing system expected to stay intact for the next 50 years, quality is the highest priority. To answer the challenge, Flynn has committed to provide a full-time QA/QC coordinator on site.

VANCOUVER Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre Submitted by Del Hernandez

The Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre, owned by the Township of Langley, includes a water park with several swimming pool, water slides, a tidal pool, and a sauna/steam room, skating rink and a fitness centre. Managed by Graham Construction, Flynn supplied and installed approximately 2,500 sq. ft. of our Accumet 2000 panel system. Flynn’s start-up team of Craig MacRitchie (estimating) and Fern Raguero (drafting) did a great job facilitating the shop drawings. Lisa Morham (purchasing) contacted suppliers and issued purchase orders. Panel fabrication was completed by our highly experienced and qualified Trim Shop Department headed by Rav Sandhu and fabricated by Steven Stone and Jonathan Short. They did a great job making the panels according to site measurements and meeting Flynn’s high-quality standards.

Brentwood Town Centre Submitted by Serge Crete

After 2 1/2 years of construction, the Amazing Brentwood project is almost coming to an end. This residential, shopping and entertainment district located in Burnaby, British Columbia is being constructed in four phases over 28 acres of land and this means more work is coming our way! Under the supervision of John Ngo (Design Manager), our drafting team of Ramon Labayo and Gabriela Tobia have produced over 15 sets of shop drawings for a variety of different designs throughout the project. This created a challenge for the management team (Serge Crête, Rough Golsheh and Superintendent Brett Templeman) considering the project was broken up in so many areas and configurations. Our Foreman Michael Carter and his crew had their own challenges to contend with but pulled it together successfully in more ways than one, making our clients (EllisDon and Shape Properties) very satisfied with the performance and the finished product. It would be hard to list all Flynn personnel that worked on this site in the last 2 ½ years but to name a few we can thank Ryan Lee (JM), Tagan Mullen (App), Griff Reader (App), Jacob Rambousek (App), Anthony Mensah (App), Brian Mahon (JM), Petar Todorov (JM), Eric Dufresne (JM), Albert Smurawa (JM), Anthony Bowen (JM), Marcelo Zeballos (JM), Rafal Pilarski (JM), Kevin Peck (JM), Travis Mckee (FM), Dean Charbonneau (App). There are four events the Flynn Family in Vancouver celebrate that bring all the shop, office, and field together; The annual Safety Meeting, a summer picnic, a kids Christmas celebration, and the Christmas lunch. As a prelude to our Christmas lunch celebration on Dec. 21, we challenged everyone to a friendly competition of who could donate the most food and toys to the local food bank. The response was, to say the least, overwhelming. We had 7 skids, 14 cartons and 4200 lbs. or 2 tons of food and toys – WOW! We had to make sure that the food bank had an empty truck to haul them all out of here. Although it was a team effort for sure, Katie Frees, our branch administrator, came up with the idea and was well supported by Kasandra Binik and Lisa Morham. The three stars are front and centre in the photo. When we are together as group, we realize how strong we are and why we succeed.

Red River College Flynn Scholarship Flynn provides an annual scholarship through the Red River College in Winnipeg, available to students enrolled in the Civil Engineering Technology Program. Major Milestone Don Delaney, Flynn’s Director of Engineering, recently gave his 200th donation to Canadian Blood Services. He began giving whole blood 25 years ago and then switched to platelet donations in 2002 which are used for cancer patients and in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. ACCUMET Fire Test Success

We recently re-tested our ACCUMET Panel System to meet the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada for non-combustible construction using ISO Clip thermally broken sub-framing components. The test, CAN/ULC S134, was conducted at an Intertek facility in Texas and our system passed with flying colours. A big thank you goes out to all the various Flynn people who helped make this such a success, including Rai Mussa’s drafting group, our panel shop in Edmonton managed by Matt Hubka, Archie MacDonald in Kansas City and Jose Menezes at Flynn Fabrication on logistics. And a very special thanks to our installers, Jason Rodriguez and Tyler Foster from our KC branch, who put in long days to get the mock-up ready for testing on a short schedule. The Airdrie Aztecs GU 10 Tier B soccer team played their first tournament in Red Deer, Alberta over the first weekend in December, unofficially placing second. Becky Sexton’s (senior estimator, Calgary branch) daughter Kaydra (shown first row, second from the left) plays forward for the team.

Their daughter, Ashley (second from the right) is part of the team and had a very successful year! She finished 4th and 10th in her two events in Portugal, received a bronze medal in double mini trampoline, and was the highest scoring team member helping win bronze in the team event at nationals!
