Message from the President
As another school year closes--the 54th one of Brother Martin High School and the 154th year of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart educating young men in New Orleans--we naturally reflect on the year just completed and make needed adjustments as we prepare for the 2023-2024 school year. Our Principal, Ryan Gallagher, and our administration review every school process and event. What worked well? What didn’t? We continually seek to better ourselves, which is at the core of everything we do here at Brother Martin. This pledge “to meet the needs of our changing world” has been ingrained in the DNA of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart since its founding in Lyon, France in 1821.
The Brother Martin High School Board of Directors challenged me to create a five-year Strategic Plan for Brother Martin High School, and we have made much progress in this endeavor over the past 12 months. Working with John Devlin, the Director of Schools for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart United States Province, and Justin Fleetwood, our Director of the Strategic Plan, we have convened a comprehensive steering committee that has guided this process. From reviewing and modifying our school’s mission statement to creating a list of “assumptions” and “principles,” the steering committee has gathered a great deal of input from our stakeholders: current students and parents, faculty and staff, and alumni. We have examined every area of school life-- from academic departments to facilities and from technology to athletics-
-and we have constructed an official proposal for our Board of Directors with goals in each of these areas of our mission and ministry. We eagerly await their consideration and, ultimately, their approval of this plan that will guide the improvement of our school for the next five years.
Finally, once our Strategic Plan is approved by the Board of Directors, we will start the process of creating a Master Plan for Facilities, which will outline all the necessary capital improvements needed to meet our Strategic Plan goals. This Master Plan will provide a fundamental blueprint for Brother Martin High School that would include any necessary renovations and new facilities.
Stay tuned for the good news that has always and will always come out of our beloved school. One thing I can guarantee you throughout this process is that Brother Martin High School will forever remain committed to the charism of Fr. Andre Coindre and the traditions and spirit of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart! With a devoted faculty and staff as partners in this mission, eager students, supportive parents, and loyal alumni and friends, the future is bright for the young men in our care.
Message from the Principal
The Venerable Brother Polycarp once wrote the following to his fellow Brothers:
Be filled with zeal and devotion for the salvation of souls. Never get discouraged, especially when your efforts obtain little result…Let us increase our humility and selflessness, let us do good work for its own sake…May the spirit of zeal, patience, and interior life be the soul of your soul. Breathe but God…
Brother Polycarp, I believe, wrote to his community of Brothers about the importance of the gift of the service of leadership, a service in which we deflect our own satisfaction or even success in deference to the needs of those around us.
I shared this quote with the Class of 2023 in August at the annual Ring Mass as a reminder of the power of such a gift. And I’m reminded of this quote yet again as I peruse this latest issue of the Century II.
As each publication of the Century II does, we celebrate the servant leaders of our school – past, present, and future – throughout its pages. And what better way to honor the servant leadership that is a cornerstone of the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart than to feature on the cover of this iteration of the publication an Alumnus of the Year who has earned a living and made a life by serving others; an outstanding faculty (and alumnus) who models this type of leadership in his daily interactions with our students; and a successful school program comprised of current student leaders whose varied service to the school manifests itself in accomplishments and honors that reach far beyond a playing field.
Each year at this time, I am inspired by the servant leadership that characterizes so many people in our school community who are partners in the shared mission of forming young men in the charism of Andre Coindre and the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.
As I write this, I am reminded of the virtue of servant leadership as we bring to a close the 2022-23 school year and celebrate all of our students’ accomplishments with celebrations, convocations, and ceremonies along with all of the appropriate pomp and circumstance. We celebrate our accomplishments while keeping a firm eye on the promise of the next school year and those to come.
Servant leadership takes courage, trust, confidence, compassion, sacrifice, and more. It takes a special person to lead through service. Servant leaders do whatever it takes to feed those around them.
Fortunately, we find ourselves surrounded by so many leaders who are hungry to do this work. The future of Brother Martin High School is bright because of the present student leaders, each of whom learned from those who came before them.
Your partner in Mission,
Ryan Gallagher ’00, PrincipalKurt D. Engelhardt ’78 Named Alumnus of the Year
Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt ‘78 was recently selected to be the 2023 Alumnus of the Year. Judge Engelhardt is a Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The celebration kicked off with the Ladies Lunch at Ralph’s on the Park where Ann Engelhardt, Kurt’s wife, was honored and welcomed by the wives of past recipients. Saturday began with the Gentlemen’s Breakfast at the Southern Yacht Club. Later, Fr. Andrew Sanchez ’03 celebrated the Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel.

Brother Martin Board of Directors Chairman David Gallo ’77, President Greg Rando ’77, Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00, and 2022 Alumnus of the Year Recipient Kriag de Lanzac ’86 presented the award. After an introduction of Kurt, Mr. Rando pleasantly surprised him by having members of the Brother Martin Crusader Band process in as they played Mardi Gras music and the Brother Martin fight song. Kurt, a former Drum Major and active supporter of the band, was amazed and overwhelmed.
During his acceptance speech, Kurt thanked his family, his mentors and teachers, and his friends and colleagues. He beamed with pride and stated how proud he was to be a Brother Martin Crusader. His speech was emotional and motivational. He stated, “We need Brother Martin High School now more than ever.” His joy and enthusiasm lifted the spirit of the entire room.

“How to Make a Life”
During his four years at Brother Martin High School, Jalen Gray ‘13 made a name for himself as a standout guard on the Crusader Basketball Team. Recently, Jalen provided the New Orleans community with another assist. Jalen took issue with the blight affecting much of the local community and chose to take action. For years, Jalen had passed the Lafitte-Greenway basketball court while passing on the nearby Claiborne overpass. He chose to spearhead an effort to create a mural on the area’s blacktop basketball court. The mural, “Shine Together,” was created by BElite, a collection of youth artists from the New Orleans community. Jalen also worked with the New Orleans Recreation Department and the Friends of the Lafitte Greenway to make this positive message come to life. On August 20, Jalen cut the ribbon to the new court and was accompanied by the Pelicans’ young star, Jaxson Hayes. Shortly thereafter, a significant number of children took to the court to utilize the new court.
Dr. Vic DuRapau, Jr. ’58 CJ played a significant role in the renovation of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in St. Roch. The renovations completed a multi-year restoration of its 1931 sanctuary, repairing damage first caused by Hurricane Katrina and then exacerbated by several subsequent storms, including Hurricane Ida in 2021. The renovation saved the building, its original stained-glass windows, and a treasured mural painted by a local artist to reflect the rich diversity of the congregation.
This testimonial is from a current Crusader Mom. A few months ago, I went to Brother Martin to pick up my son, and I was looking at the class pictures hanging in the hallway while I waited for him. I found one of my favorite patients, Ed Minor, in the Class of 1973! Barry Hebert ’74, Director of School Services, passed and asked if I was looking for someone specific. I told him about my nursing home patient who was a proud Crusader and Band Alumnus. He told me to wait a minute, and he gave me this shirt to give him. It actually brought tears to my eyes because I knew how excited he’d be. I brought it to him the next day, and you would have thought I gave him a million dollars! He was so excited and proud of this shirt. He rarely wore it because he didn’t want to get it dirty. He referenced his Crusader Band years as some of the best of his life. He also went to Southern University and became a high school band director. He asked about my boys every single day and loved meeting the current Crusaders who would come to work with me for service hours. Mr. M passed away recently. Death is common in long term care, unfortunately, but sometimes, you get attached, and it hits a little harder. Rest in peace, Mr. M!

Rick Robey - A Unique Athlete
By Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJBasketball star Rick Robey ’74 is believed to be the only athlete in any sport who has won the ultimate championship at the state, college, and professional level as well as a gold medal at the Pan-American games.
Brother Martin can thank the Ochsner Clinic for the Robey family moving to New Orleans. “The main reason we moved was that my mother was diagnosed with cancer. We were living in Kodiak AK, and Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans was supposedly one of the tops in the country for treating cancer. My dad worked for the Federal government, and they transferred him down there. I was eight or nine and still in elementary school.
“We lived on the West Bank, and I went to Edna Karr Junior High. A coach from Brother Martin came to watch another player and saw me play that game. Afterward, he tracked down my father and me and recruited me to take a look at Brother Martin and see if I would want to play basketball there.”
Rick came to Brother Martin as a sophomore but had to sit out that year because he was transferring from the public to the private school system. However, he participated in Coach Andy Russo’s practices.
“Coach Russo played a really big role in my career. He was a really tough coach. He made me a much more aggressive player. Sitting out a year really didn’t hurt me but benefited me to better my skill. I remember Coach Russo at the end of practice rolling the ball out there and who got it could leave practice. He also did that with rebounding. Coach Russo was one of the people who made me what I became. He put spunk in me. While I was on the court, my personality was a little different from my personality away from the court, and he played a big role in that.”
Rick and two other transfers who sat out the previous year, Leroy Oliver and Reggie Hadley, joined the varsity for the 1972-73 season. The only returning starter was senior captain Jay Trapani. The Crusaders improved from a so-so 18-9 in 1971-72 to 31-5 and a berth in the Class 4A semifinals.
The game against Bastrop in the Top Twenty in Alexandria wasn’t decided until the last second. The Rams featured two players who would join Robey in the NBA – 6’10” junior C Carl Kilpatrick and sophomore G Calvin Natt. The Crusaders had the ball with 20 seconds remaining and the score tied at 52. While passing the ball around and waiting to take the final shot in the last seconds, Trapani bounced a pass toward his left wing man. A Bastrop player got a hand in front of the Martin player and deflected the ball toward the sideline. The Ram then grabbed the ball just before he went out of bounds and threw it right at Trapani coming toward him. Jay caught the ball but couldn’t stop and took two short quick steps – walking!
Now Bastrop could take the last shot. Robey guarded Kilpatrick just to the left of the lane. As time ran down, Natt drove down the lane as Kilpatrick moved under the goal. Meanwhile, another Ram picked Robey just enough to give the Bastrop big man time to take the pass and lay in the ball to win the game 54-52.
Rick’s senior year brought a new coach to Brother Martin. Tom Kolb had been Russo’s assistant since Andy came to St. Aloysius in 1967 until Tom spent the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons as Jesuit’s head coach.
“The coaching change was a shock to us,” recalls Robey, “but I don’t really think it affected our style of play. We had such a close knit group of guys. Coach Kolb came in and did a good job keeping us together. He was a little more mild-mannered than Coach Russo. We had a really good group of players. We had gotten so close the year before and felt we had a really good shot to win state.”
The Crusaders’ main competition was another Catholic league foe, Holy Cross. The Crusaders and Tigers met five times, with Holy Cross winning only one. Each game pitted Robey against HC’s 6’10” C Felton Young.
The final meeting of the two schools came in the state finals in Alexandria. The Crusaders defeated Captain Shreve 63-56 in the semifinals behind Robey’s 31 points and 20 rebounds.
After a shaky first half against Holy Cross, a second half surge won it for the Crusaders 67-56. Robey scored 20 points and picked off 18 rebounds while holding Young to a mere five points.
Rick recalled the 1974 championship team In a 2003 Times-Picayune article. “We just had a lot of talent, and we were a very big team for that day. We just felt before the season began that we would win it. We were a very close team then, and we remain a close team today, 30 years later.”
Robey earned All-District, All-City, and All-State honors and was also selected as the top player in the Louisiana Top Twenty Tournament. Considered one of the top four recruits in the nation, he was also a member of the U.S. All-Star team.
“I was recruited by a lot of schools, but I narrowed it down to Notre Dame, coached by Digger Phelps, and Kentucky, coached by Joe B. Hall. The telling point for choosing Kentucky over Notre Dame was that they had recruited Jack Givens, Mike Phillips, James Lee, and Dan Hall, all high school All-Americans. They also had a nucleus of six seniors coming back. It turned out to be the right spot for me. Coach Hall was very similar to Andy Russo, a very tough disciplinarian. He transformed me from a 6’10” 265 lb high school player into a muscular, 225lb player by my senior year. Coach Hall was probably the first coach who became known for his weightlifting and conditioning. We had none of that at Brother Martin. Conditioning was run a lot and play. Weightlifting was not in vogue in football at that time, much less basketball.”
Kentucky lost to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament finals in Rick’s freshman year. He played only half his sophomore season due to a knee injury. His junior year, the Wildcats made it to the regional final and lost to North Carolina. Rick’s senior year, Kentucky was the preseason #1 pick and lived up to that billing by defeating Duke in the finals.
(continued on page 35)
Rick Robey - A Unique Athlete (continued from page 34)
Robey was chosen for the US basketball team that won the gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City. “I played with Robert Parish, who was the high school Player of the Year in Louisiana two years before I was. I was in my first year at Kentucky, and they weren’t inviting freshmen to try out. But Kentucky’s legendary coach Adolph Rupp was on the Olympic Board, and he was able to get me a tryout where they brought in 80 college players. Twelve of us made the team. We traveled all over Canada playing the Canadian National Team before we went to Mexico City.”
The Indiana Pacers selected Robey with the #3 pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. “About two months into the season, I played against Dave Cowens, the player-coach of the Celtics. After the game, he said, ‘Rick, we’re going to make a trade for you.’ So I played with Boston the next five years. They drafted Larry Bird in the same draft I was in, but he went back to college. The Celtics signed him before the next draft. They were able to make a trade for Robert Parish and Kevin McHale in the next draft. That’s when the Celtics became rejuvenated when Bird, Parish, and McHale played together. We won the NBA Championship in 1981.”
After four seasons with the Celtics, Rick was traded to the Phoenix Suns. “I was plagued with injuries but stayed three years thanks to a guaranteed contract. I didn’t play a whole lot the last two years because of an Achilles injury.”
So he retired and returned to Kentucky, where he got into the real estate business. “I did really well in it.”
“I met my wife of 36 years in Lexington after my playing days. We have one child, Sam, who’s 33. He ended up being Kentucky Player of the Year in football.
He was recruited by Florida where he played five years on the offensive line. He played with the Tim Tebow group that won the national title at Florida.”
Rick has stayed in touch over the years with two of his Brother Martin teammates, Tom Cronin ’74 and Jim McCulla ’74.
“I’ve been very blessed in my sports career plus lucky enough to get into something I really enjoyed. My sports career made me a better businessperson too.”
Matt Massey ’93, Regional VP for Raising Cane’s, has been instrumental building a relationship between Cane’s and Brother Martin High School. Raising Cane’s is one of our four Conlin Gymnasium Scoreboard Sponsors. As a token of our appreciation, Barry Hebert ’74 presented Cane’s and Matt with a special jersey.
