Advent Reflection: The Greatest Gift by: Michael Hymel, Class of 2024
“For you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Gen. 3:19). We realize two things from this quote from God to Adam: our time on Earth is limited, and all earthly riches will be gone one day just like us. This causes us to think about what really matters. The only eternal happiness that we human beings can find is in God. So, during the Christmas season, we should think of the great gift that is God becoming incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ. All of the gifts under the Christmas tree will surely give us a rush of dopamine and fleeting pleasure, but is that really the point of Christmas? As cliche as it may sound, we are celebrating the greatest gift the human race has ever been given during Christmas: Jesus Christ. With God taking on human form, He made it possible for us to be saved from death. As John tells us in his letters,” Yet the world and its enticement are passing away. But whoever does the will of God remains forever” (1 John 2:17). We should not only Keep Christ in Christmas; rather, we should keep Christ in our lives always, as he is the only source of eternal happiness and life. When we think about God’s gift of salvation that he has bestowed on us through Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection, everything else seems minute in comparison. God has promised us a place in His eternal kingdom if we honor Him with our lives and accept His grace. I do not think anyone could find anything better than that under the Christmas tree. Despite this great gift and promise of Grace from God, we often overlook God and ignore Him in our everyday lives. Rather than worrying about what gifts you are going to receive this Christmas, think about the great gift that God has given of Himself in the person of Jesus Christ.
