Ralph Romaguera SA recently received the Director’s Award from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). This award recognizes outstanding service, education, dedication, and sharing of knowledge to other members of the PPA community. There are more than 34,000 members in PPA, and Ralph served as President in 2013-2014.

1969

Gary Knoepfler SA has been volunteering at the WWII Museum on Friday afternoons since February 2014 and has accumulated more than 2000 hours of service. Gary has become the Team Leader of his shift, an Ambassador, and a Docent. He has served on the Volunteer Advisory Council and worked on the Digitalization Project in the archives. In 2017, he was recognized as the outstanding volunteer from his shift at the President’s Luncheon. Gary decided to volunteer at the Museum after retiring from a long career in the Louisiana insurance industry for three reasons: first, for something to do in retirement; second, as community service, and third –and most important – to honor all three men of the generation of his family preceding him.

1970

Rocky Daboval, of WBRZ, was honored by Broadcasting and Cable as one of the top general managers in television. Rocky, who is retiring this month after nearly 18 years as general manager of the Baton Rouge ABC affiliate, was named as general manager of the year for small television markets. Broadcasting and Cable said the honor was more of a lifetime achievement award for Daboval. He has been with WBRZ for more than 40 years.

1972

Grady Hurley, a partner at Jones Walker, received the Distinguished Maritime Lawyer Award presented by the New Orleans Bar Association. Grady is a co-leader of the maritime litigation, arbitration & dispute resolution team and co-chair of the Energy, Environmental & Natural Resources Industry Team. Since 1979, he has focused on maritime, oilfield, and energy litigation.

Joe Exnicios, President of Hancock Whitney Bank, has been named the 2023 Dove Award for Philanthropy Honoree for Covenant House.

Phil Jones was recently honored as a “People’s Health Champion.” Phil hiked 2,194 miles through states over 5 months on the Appalachain Trail.

Wayne Papania is the owner of MEDco America, LLC which specializes in the latest technologies, education, and Negative Pressure Treatment Systems for wound care in the U.S. Wayne has spent his career in sales achieving Salesman of The Year and #1 Salesman for companies like Pitney Bowes, Baxter, and Cardio Dynamics. In October 2012, Wayne started MEDco America, LLC. Through hard work, leadership, and a relentless work ethic, Wayne has built MEDco America, LLC to be the largest independently owned wound care treatment company in the U.S.

Robert Bertel, owner and president of Bertel Shipping Co. Inc., has been named to CityBusiness’ “Powerlist” as one of the most influential people in the port & maritime profession.

Patrick Graffagnino has joined Nations One and will be involved in multi-family finance, commercial markets, and other Nations One products.

Mel Lagarde has joined LCMC Health as chief strategy and growth officer. This leadership position is new. Lagarde will be responsible for providing strategic direction and advancing opportunities designed to continue LCMC Health’s growth as an integrated healthcare system.

Thomas H. Gernhauser, Esq. Chief Public Defender, 34th Judicial District Court, St. Bernard Parish was awarded the inaugural Service and Dedication Award from the Public Defender Association of Louisiana. Tommy’s son Sam ’22 joined him for the award presentation.

1977

Kevin Camarata, Camarata Masonry Systems, and his team received a Natural Stone Institute Pinnacle Award for re-anchoring all of the exterior stone on the 75-story Chase Tower in Houston, Texas.

Dwain Celistan, Managing Partner at DHR Global, was recognized as one of the “10 most influential black corporate leaders to follow in 2023’ by CIO Views. He was also recently recognized as a “Top Performer,” top 1% of his peers, in the firm.

David Gallo, President of Gallo Construction, was recognized as a Junior Achievement 2023 Laureate.

Roderic Teamer, Sr., Director of Diversity Programs and Business Development at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, has been announced as the vice chairman of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Wisniewski, Brother Martin Athletic Director, was recognized as a “One to Watch in Education” by New Orleans CityBusiness. Mark has more than 30 years of educational and health care experience and has been a member of the faculty since 1990. He has served over the years as a social studies teacher, assistant disciplinarian, health and physical education teacher and department chair, head wrestling coach and head baseball coach for 21 years, where he amassed 400 career wins, and was an assistant coach on the 1996 state championship team.

Albert Sam, MD was recently featured in an article for Tulane Medical School. The article states, “From his days on the football field at Brother Martin High School in New Orleans to his success as a prominent vascular surgeon, Albert Sam, MD was always at the head of the pack…”

1993

Chad Landry, founder and president of the New Orleans LymphoManiac Cancer Fund, was honored as one of East Jefferson General Hospital Auxiliary’s Great Gentleman award recipients. The honorees, who were chosen for their volunteerism in the New Orleans metro area, were presented at a reception in January at the hospital. Chad founded the Cancer Advocacy Group of Louisiana and serves on the board of the Al Copeland Foundation. He has served on the board of the New Orleans American Cancer Society Foundation.

Jay Telotte ’67 SA published an Oxford Handbook of New Science Fiction Cinemas with Oxford Univ. Press, and his Selling Science Fiction Cinema: Making and Marketing a Genre is being released this summer from Univ. of Texas Press. Both are available through Amazon.

Raymond Arroyo ’87, best-selling aurthor of “The Wise Men Who Found Christmas,” had a book-signing at Barnes & Noble in Metairie in mid-November. Brother Martin students volunteered to assist at the event. Logan Coe ’23 and Mason Dalimore ’23 are pictured with Raymond.

Mark Bologna ’88, recently published “Beyond Bourbon Street: An Insider’s Guide to New Orleans.” Mark is also the host of the popular Beyond Bourbon Street podcast and curator of the Instagram page of the same name, as he explores the people, places, music, history, and culture that make New Orleans unique.

Christian J. Dean, Ph.D. ’94 published his first self-help book titled “Ladders and Shovels: How to Climb Out of Emotional Holes and Stop Digging Them.” The book provides strategies to help individuals change thought patterns to improve their emotional state. The book is now available on Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats.

Michael Wich, Chief Building Safety and Development Officer at South Central Planning and Development Commission and the President of the International Code Council, was honored by the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans for his commitment to the community.

Harold Baur III has been appointed to Vice President of Piling and Marine Construction at Boh Bros. Construction. He is a 23-year employee of the company.

Dwayne Aucoin, Vice President of State Block, Inc., has been appointed by the Department of Commerce to the Inaugural CMU Checkoff Board of Directors. Cement Masonry Checkoff is an industry-wide, coordinated and continuous program of research, promotion, and education to support specific generic products. Checkoff programs allow commodity producers to raise funds through self-imposed mandatory assessments.

Jason Villemarette and the team of Fire on the Bayou and Mid City Sound recently won Gold Addies and Best of Show for the Brand Society/Aucoin Hart production “aeuvre d’art,” a series of television commercials for New Orleans jeweler Aucoin Hart.

Greg Ferrara has been nominated and selected to receive the National Eagle Scout Association Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. Greg is the president and CEO of the National Grocers Association (NGA) based in Washington, D.C.

Steven Starks, M.D., FAPA, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, is part of the Class of 2023 Yale MBA for Executives program and has been named one of the Pozen-Commonwealth Fund Fellows in Healthcare Equity Leadership.

1999

Todd McDonald recently took over as President of Liberty Bank. His father Alden McDonald, Jr. recently retired from that role. Liberty Bank and Trust Company is the largest Black-owned bank in the country. He has also been named to the New Orleans CityBuisness 2023 “Money Makers” which honors local professionals for their financial achievements and their community impact.

Kyle Sharbonno, Vice President of Gootee Construction, Inc. completed his term as chair of The American Heart Association by earning $260K with their annual Heart Walk. Kyle has turned over the role of chair to David Theard ’00, Employee Benefits Consultant at Cadence Insurance.

Raymond Boudreaux III is a supervisor of nursing in the progressive care unit at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is a recipient of the 2023 Circle of Excellence Award.

Tom Branighan recently opened MaMou in the French Quarter. Chef Tom, who trained at the CIA in Hyde Park, brings hard-earned, finely honed French technique to the table at his nouvelle French restaurant.

Jason Gauthier, professional and executive banker at Hancock Whitney Bank, has been installed as the secretary/treasurer of the New Orleans Chapter, Society of Financial Service Professionals.

Mark Raymond has been sworn in as the new New Orleans Regional Transit Authority board chairman.

2007

Aubry Killion was promoted as an investigative reporter at WDSUTV. Aubry won 1st place in investigative reporting and 1st place in general news reporting by Press Club of New Orleans in 2022. He also recently won Emmy Awards for his coverage of Hurricane Ida and a deadly tornado in Arabi. This was Aubry’s third and fourth Emmy Awards.

James Catalano celebrated the fifth anniversary of his Architecture firm’s inception with the opening of CICADA’s new office space in Uptown New Orleans. CICADA is a multi-disciplinary firm that offers innovative designs ranging from commercial and residential architecture to digital modeling and laser scanning.

Jordan Parker, Esq.,has been named to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Louisiana board of directors.

2013

Kent Cheramie coaches the Bayou Boys 12u club volleyball team and has won a number of tournaments including the 12u Blastoff, 13u Governors, and 14u Match Point while competing as a 12u team.

Josh Olivier received the 2022 “Outstanding Young Civil Engineer” award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Baton Rouge Branch. This recognition is awarded to young engineers who demonstrate excellence in their field and a commitment to serving others through their work. The award selection was based on five categories including service or involvement in ASCE, service to the advancement of the profession, service to the community outside of engineering, technical accomplishments, and other evidence of merit or character.

Nathan Long, LSU Law School, is a Fall 2022 Paul M. Hebert Scholar. This honor is awarded to the top 10% of LSU Law students earning 12 or more semester hours of credit in courses taken during an individual semester.

St. Aloysius 1952 Football

Championship Reunion

Members of the 1952 St. Aloysius Football Team gathered to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of winning the 1952 City and South Louisiana Championships. Team members enjoyed lunch at Porter and Luke’s while reminiscing of their time on Esplanade and North Rampart. Team members who participated in the lunch included: Jack Voelker ’52, Buddy Ward, Jr. ’54, Frank Abene ’54, Gasper Abene ’53, Ralph Schindler, Sr. ’53, Howard Bode, Sr. ’56, Morris Gray, Jr. ’55, Eddie Arms ’54, Joe Mahoney ’53, Ronald Senac ’52, and Mike McAdam ’53.

Zach Breaux was the starting center for a Jackson State team, which is 11-0 in the regular season for the first time in program history.

Brother Celestine Algero, S.C. ’50 joined the Brothers of the Sacred Heart as a prenovice in Metuchen, NJ, on December 10, 1950 and became a novice there on August 14, 1951. He professed his first vows on August 15, 1952 in Metuchen. Brother Celestine had a distinguished career in the field of education which spanned 68 years. He served as a high school teacher, assistant principal, supervisor of instruction, principal and president at several Brothers’ schools, including Saint Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, MS; Cor Jesu High School in New Orleans, LA; Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, LA; and McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, AL. “Cele” made a major contribution at the collegiate level also, accepting responsibilities as an associate professor, professor, and chair of the Education Department at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. Until his final illness in March 2023, this passionate educator was working with new faculty members at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, LA – at 91 years of age! The consummate teacher, Brother Celestine donated his body for the furthering of science.
