HOMECOMING

Chris Heine ’03 Named Director of Alumni Relations

Message from the President “As for the work, there is nothing better than a list of tasks to be done; and let each brother, teacher, or prefect see to it that these are adhered to; let each tend exclusively to his own workshop and not remain idle for a single instant.” Advice from Father André Coindre to Brother Borgia, 1820s France Father André Coindre, the Founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, was both an intensely spiritual man as well as a practical man, and he knew well that he had to attend to small details that would build up the Kingdom of God as the earliest group of Brothers struggled to create formation and education experiences for the young men they served in revolution-torn Lyon in the 1820s. His letters are filled with details about the upkeep of facilities, the cleanliness of the brothers and students, and the programs in place to teach the boys a marketable skill as well as the Catholic faith. So it’s no surprise that, 200+ years later, we still follow Father Coindre’s sensibility in always evaluating our programs and facilities “to meet the needs of our changing world.” This past summer, the Brother Martin High School Board of Directors unanimously approved the 5-year Strategic Plan, eighteen months in the making, that addresses ALL aspects of our school mission: spiritual formation, Brothers of the Sacred Heart identity, academic curricula,

activities, and athletics, just to name a few. Goals and objectives have been linked to “goal owners,” and already our implementation committee has begun meeting to ensure that the Strategic Plan is being put into action. Expect a lot of great improvements to our already outstanding school programs! An offshoot of the Strategic Plan is the formation of a Master Plan that coordinates with the Strategic Plan goals and that specifically addresses physical campus improvements, such as renovations and additions to our current campus. Formulating this Master Plan is happening right now. An assessment of such needs is taking place, and a Master Plan Committee has met several times already to formulate the Brother Martin campus of the future. We hope you can tell that “workshops” are not remaining idle “for a single instant”! As always, thank you for your continued loving support of all that we do at Brother Martin High School. We could not be the outstanding school of the present--and of the future--without your prayers and help. Ametur Cor Jesu. Ametur Cor Mariae.

Greg Rando ‘77, President

Message from the Principal It is true, as the saying goes, that Hope springs eternal. At Brother Martin, the seeds of that hope are planted every day. In order for hope to rule the day, we anchor ourselves to our faith, and we place our hope in the young Crusaders at Brother Martin who have been entrusted to our care. Hope springs eternal through faith…and also through hard work, commitment, every day effort, and community. Hope is part of our history. Father Coindre rescued two abandoned girls outside of St. Nizier Church in Lyon in 1815, moved by nothing more than conviction buoyed by faith in God. He then established the Pieux Secours, the first school of our institute, with the help of lay people who ultimately helped make Coindre’s dream a reality. Later Br. Polycarp was open to the call from the Bishop of Mobile, Alabama, to send five Brothers of the Sacred Heart to America to build schools, providing a sanctuary for young people despite never having even set foot in America before sending those Brothers across the Atlantic Ocean to spread the wings of the Institute. Polycarp never visited beforehand, and he was never able to journey to America in the midst of the Brothers burgeoning existence in the New World. When he died, he never saw what had been established in Mobile or eventually in New Orleans on Chartres & Barracks, Esplanade & Rampart, or Elysian Fields. Yet, I think he knew what lie ahead because he trusted in Divine Providence and in his fellow Brothers, lay partners, and the young people entrusted to their 2  Century II

care. I believe that Father Coindre, Brother Polycarp, and Br. Martin Hernandez would be proud of the state of our Brother Martin school community today because our school is a result of their hope. Because of the effort, talent, and gifts our students possess, and because of the faith that we all share, our hope at Brother Martin for what lies ahead is really more of an expectation. We’re confident in what the future holds because of the young men leading our way. Our mission at Brother Martin is to carry forth our storied tradition of educating young men for life. The mission is the work. Our students are the mission. And, our students are on a mission. We embrace this mission with open arms. It is the driving force that propels our school community forward. With this mission, there are no limits to what we can achieve. Go Crusaders!

Tricia Lara, Cari Rhoton, Jennifer Fields, Amber Bathel, and Renée Amedee The Brother Martin community gathered on campus in late October for Elysian Field Forever, presented by Hancock Whitney. Nearly 600 guests including parents, friends, Alumni of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin, and Faculty and Staff, celebrated Brother Martin’s largest fundraiser of the year. The school was transformed into a French Quarter Courtyard, with plenty of string lights, plants, and even a gold mime. The evening began with the Patron Party, where guests enjoyed delicious food prepared by Pigeon Caterers and Dean Pigeon ’06, Vance Vaucresson ’87, and Brother Martin’s own Culinary Crusaders. The Main Event began with President Greg Rando ’77 welcoming and thanking guests for their support.

Ceremonies, Mark Romig ‘74, kept the live auction bidding fast and furious for the seven unique items. Guests enjoyed music by Bag of Donuts as they danced the night away. Auction sponsors and donors were recognized throughout the night as well as on our auction website. The evening concluded with Director of Advancement Kenny Spellman ’84 thanking guests and the committee. Meredith Duhe, Communications, Marketing, and Events Manager, led a dedicated committee, an army of volunteers, vendors, staff, and Brother Martin Student Ambassadors and Cheerleaders to ensure a successful event.

A selection of silent and live auction items were open for bidding, and guests tried their luck with several raffles, including the “$5,000 Cash Raffle,”“50/50,” “Blanton’s Bourbon Raffle,” and more. Master of

Veterans Day On this Veterans Day morning, which also happens to be the birthday of Alumnus Jacques Fontan ‘86, members of the Brother Martin community, led by the NJROTC, came together in solidarity to honor our beloved veterans who put their lives on the line to defend us and our freedom. First, Principal Ryan Gallagher ‘00 spoke of the significance of our gathering in the Robert M. Conlin Gymnasium. Then, Brother Martin NJROTC cadets led a prayer service for those men and women who have dedicated their lives in military service for the sake of our freedom.

After the prayer service, our NJRTOC Cadets and the Crusader Band led guests, including veterans in the Brother Martin High School community and family members of Chief Petty Officer Jacques Fontan ‘86, to a special wreathlaying ceremony in the backyard.

Then, Commander Bruce Nolan ‘90, USN (Ret.) shared moving words of gratitude for the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families.

National Commissioning Day “On the morning of October 27, 1967, honored guests gathered on the flight deck of the USS Lexington Naval aircraft carrier. Included on the main stage were F. Edward Hebert, our U.S. Congressman, Victor Schiro, the Mayor of New Orleans, New Orleans Archbishop Philip Hannan, the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Thomas Moorer (the highest ranking officer in the U.S. Navy), and Brother Remigius, the President of St. Aloysius. These high ranking guests presided over a Commissioning Ceremony that authorized the beginning of the St. Aloysius Naval Junior ROTC. Navy Captain Jimmy Jones formally accepted responsibilty from the Chief of Naval Operation in front of the newly formed NJROTC regiment that consisted of every student at St. Aloysius. The entire school transitioned from daily school clothes to wearing the NJROTC uniform every day. Two years later, when St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu consolidated to form Brother Martin High School, more than 1,000 students arrived at school the first day in the NJROTC daily uniform consisting of a khaki shirt, khaki pants, webbed belt, brass buckle, black socks, and black shoes. They had a clean and professional haircut. At the time, NJROTC was mandatory for every student at our school. The NJROTC was a way to bring together students from two different schools and to give them a common uniform, a common standard, and a common goal of forming them into citizen leaders ready for the

demands of the world. The all-khaki uniform was the traditional uniform for Brother Martin students for many years, all the way through the 1995-96 school year. Our school uniform and our holistic approach to fostering and modeling self-discipline in our students are traditions whose foundations can be traced back to our NJROTC program. Today marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of our storied NJROTC. Only one school in the world, Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida, has an NJROTC older than Brother Martin’s. In the first year of operation, we earned the designation of State Champions. In 1969, our Drill Team marched in President Nixon’s Inaguration Parade in Washington, DC. Since the beginning, our unit earned Bravo Zulu every year for outstanding grades in all areas of our annual inspection. We earned Naval Honor Unit 26 times, representing the top 20% of NJROTC units in the country. Recently, our Area Manager selected Brother Martin as one of the first 15 schools in the country to pilot the 8th grade cadet program in 2020. Our Color Guard performs at more than 50 events per year. The New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau provides our contact information to all conventions that request a Color Guard for their opening ceremonies. Our NJROTC competes in competitions nationwide including athletics,

academics, drill, air rifle, and cyber security. Our NJROTC represents Brother Martin’s core values. For 55 years, our NJROTC has transformed at least 40 new cadets per year and also formed them into leaders whom you see around the school. A number of our current faculty and staff were members of the Brother Martin NJROTC when they were students here, including Mr. Alley, Mr. Dugas, Mr. Hebert, Mr. Jeandron, Dr. Melito, Mr. Nash, Commander Nolan, Mr. Rando, Mr. Schluter, Mr. Valiente, and Mr. Wisniewski. At a recent Alumni Reunion for the Class of 1970, the first Brother Martin class, a group of four Alumni met Commander Nolan. He showed them the pictures from the Commissioning Day, and they found where they stood that day. They found their names in the Chain of Command lists. Each remembered to what Battalion, Company, and Platoon they were assigned that year. One teared up when he found his name on the list. He said that his memories of the experiences and his friendships stayed with him for his lifetime. He said that what we do here will form our cadets into men who can “make not just a living, but a life.” Today, we recognize our NJROTC program’s anniversary and look forward to our next 55 years.

We are excited to report that construction of the Brother Martin Baseball Batting & Pitching Facility has been underway since the summer. The project is scheduled to be completed just in time for the start of baseball practice. The newly built facility sits on the Southeast corner of E.A. Farley Field on the campus. The interior of the facility (3745 sq. feet) consists of 3 sport-turf 70’ tunnels that accommodate batting, pitching, and fielding needs. Each tunnel can be converted into a half cage to support 12 batters for tee work or 6 batters for soft toss. In addition, state-of-the-art pitching machines will allow 3 batters at a time to receive game simulation practice. The tunnels can be converted to pitching tunnels through the installation of portable mounds allowing 3 pitchers at a time to work on their craft. The entire facility is 4670 sq. feet under roof and will be adorned with our hallmark Crusader Shield. Exterior lighting and landscape will showcase the facility, accentuating the beauty of our campus.

Champs at Last!

By Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ St. Aloysius High School began playing football in 1921. 31 years later, the school had yet to win the Prep league championship. Coach Eddie Toribio expected to reap the reward of three years of work he had expended to develop the most solid program in school history. However, he lost a key assistant when Johnny Altobello, who had directed the Crusaders to four state championships in basketball and two more in baseball, accepted the position of Athletic Director at De La Salle. Andy Douglass, a graduate of Metairie High and Auburn, took Altobello’s spot on the football staff. M. L. Lagarde continued as a football assistant and moved up to head coach of basketball and baseball. With eighteen returning lettermen, Aloysius was expected to contend for the league championship with Holy Cross and Jesuit. TB Nick Blount would lead the versatile offense that could run from the traditional single wing or from the split-T, the hot new system run by Bud Wilkinson’s Oklahoma Sooners. Lagarde concocted the 6-1-2-2 “umbrella” defense. The team practiced in City Park on Marconi Drive except on rainy days when they’d work out in the gym. And water was not provided during practice, as was the accepted practice of the day. Excitement mounted for the ‘52 season when the first Associated Press state poll came out. St. Aloysius was voted #10 by the sportswriters. This was heady company for the Crimson Knights, who would exceed their predicted ranking. First up for the tenth year in a row: #8 Catholic High. Eddie Harelson’s Bears brought a 2-0 mark into the contest with the Crusaders. In addition to justifying their Top Ten ranking, the Saints also sought revenge for 1951’s 19-7 setback. Fri., Sep. 26: Catholic High @ City Park Stadium (8:00) St. Aloysius 0 0 7 12 19 Catholic High 0 0 0 0 0 After a scoreless first half, both teams came out ready to crank up their offenses. The visitors got the first crack, driving in a “meat-grinder march” to the SA 13 before the Crusaders nailed the running back on the 17 to take over on downs. Inspired, Aloysius moved to the first score of the evening. Blount skirted right end for 22 to move the chains for the first time. Nick and Arms teamed up to advance the pigskin to the CHS 47 where Billy Connick fumbled a pitchout, scooped it up, and raced to pay dirt. Blount’s PAT made it 7-0 with a minute left in the third period. Taking the kickoff, the Bruins began marching only to be derailed by a fumble that T Bob Arnoult covered on the CHS 40. Blount and Arms once again combined to tote the leather to the three, where the Bears held on fourth down. The Bears immediately kicked out of danger to the 42, James Schmitt returning 22y. Two plays later, Mike Huber scampered 21y on an end-around for the Crusaders second touchdown. After thwarting a CHS threat with an interception on his 20, Arms skirted left end In the final two minutes and, as several Bears hit him at their 46, he lateralled to Schindler who raced to the end zone. The Crusaders now set their sights on another Top Ten foe, Gernon Brown’s 2-0 Jesuit Blue Jays. In previewing 38  Century II

Celebrating the city championship after Fortier game. Eddie Toribio holds the football, and M. L. Lagarde is to his right. the game, Times-Picayune Prep Writer N. Charles Wicker wrote: “St. Aloysius has the defensive power, and Jesuit has the speed in its backfield.” Toribio had faced his mentor Brown three times, tying the first and losing the next two. Overall, the Crusaders had won only two of 25 in the series with the Blue Jays. Thu., Oct. 2: Jesuit @ City Park Stadium (8:15) St. Aloysius 0 0 7 0 7 Jesuit 0 0 0 0 0 16,000, the largest crowd in the state so far that season, saw the Crusader defense live up to its billing, holding the Blue Jays to just two first downs and 38y rushing. Pete Finney wrote in the States-Item that Aloysius turned in one of the greatest defensive jobs ever seen in City Park Stadium. After a scoreless first half, Jesuit’s Donald Trahan attempted a screen pass, lobbing the ball from his own 28 over the onrushing linemen into the waiting arms of Crusader Jack Voelker who ran it in for the only touchdown of the contest. Blount booted the extra point. The Crimson defense made the seven points stand up as Jesuit never threatened the entire game, ending with only two first downs. Toribio said after the game, “We’re undefeated, untied, unscored on and uninspiring offensively.” Next up was 3-1 Redemptorist, which had a competitive starting lineup but little depth. 4,000 watched the Rams score the first points against the Knights but still drown in the Crimson tide. The game would be unusual because neither side completed a pass. Sun., Oct. 12: Redemptorist @ City Park (2:30) St. Aloysius 0 12 7 7 26 Redemptorist 6 0 0 6 12 Aloysius seemed headed for a quick score after Schmitt returned the kickoff 24y to his 43. But Bob Neyrey, starting in place of Blount, who sat out the first half after missing Saturday’s practice, fumbled, and Anthony Margiotta recovered at the 37. After the Rams went nowhere, Neyrey tried a quick kick on third down, but Ray Boss blocked it, picked it up at the 14, and took it over to put the Crusaders behind for the first time in the season. The missed PAT kept the score at 6-0 Rams. Aloysius broke into the scoring column in the second quarter on the same type of play on which they scored against Jesuit: intercepting a screen pass and returning it for a touchdown. This time it was Mahoney who turned the trick from the 27. Later, Connick sped 16y around end to the end zone after attempting to pass from the double wing. Aloysius 12 Redemptorist 6 at the half.

Midway through the third period, Neyrey scored on a 21y run around right end. Chubby Marks converted. 19-7 Crusaders. Emile Landry gave the Rams life in the final period when he took Blount’s punt on his 30 and raced 70y to pay dirt to make it 19-12. But Schindler clinched victory in the final minutes by bulling over from the five. The Crusaders now took aim at Holy Cross in what was billed as the Prep title game since the defending cochampion Tigers were the preseason favorite. Sun., Oct. 19: Holy Cross @ City Park Stadium (2:30) St. Aloysius 0 14 6 0 20 Holy Cross 0 7 0 0 7 16,000 sun-drenched gridiron enthusiasts watched the Crusader defense contain the mighty Holy Cross offense. For the second year in a row, Aloysius scored 20 against the Tigers, but this time held them to only seven. George Lyles intercepted Blount’s first pass of the day and returned it to the SA 40. In a possession that would set the tone for the afternoon, the Tigers moved to the 33 but turned the ball over on downs at the 35. After an exchange of punts, the Saints got their first scoring opportunity when they forced a hurried punt that went out of bounds on the HC 34. Aloysius launched a 10-play drive that consisted entirely of single wing rushes and carried over into the second period. Blount plunged over left tackle from the 1’ line to make it 7-0. After the teams traded bobbles, Holy Cross’s star Lou Deutschmann hit the line, but Bob Arnoult’s bonejarring tackle forced a fumble that Mahoney snagged in midair at the HC 40 and ran in. With little time left, it looked like Aloysius would lead 14-0 lead at the half. But Donald Carriere took the kickoff and handed the ball at the 15 to Charley French, who raced up the east sidelines to pay dirt. Deutschmann plunged over for the PAT. Despite totaling only 20y for the half on the ground and 23 more on three passes, the Tigers were still in the game. The entire third period was played in HC territory. Huber pounced on a fumble caused by Arnoult at their 33. Repeated gains by Schindler and Blount put the pigskin on the 15. From there, Arms ran the T formation option play around left end to extend the margin back to 13 points. Holy Cross finally gained two first downs rushing in the fourth quarter, but, with time running out, had to take to the air. They reached the 10 on three completions. But the rock-ribbed Crimson defense walled off the end zone to repel the invasion. The Crusaders carried Toribio off the field on their shoulders. However, Eddie directed all praise toward his assistants. “Our defense, a 6-1-4 with slight variations, was Mel’s idea. And Andy, I don’t have to tell you, has done a remarkable job with the line.” The win was the most significant in Aloysius football history to that point, eclipsing even the first victory over Jesuit in 1944. The triumph, their first over the Tigers since 1941, marked the first time Aloysius defeated both Jesuit and Holy Cross in the same season. As a result, the Crusaders moved to the top spot in the state poll – another first. N. Charles Wicker wrote in The Picayune: “Four years

Looks like Ed had something.” The Saints now prepared for the always pesky Warren Easton Eagles. Sun., Oct. 26: Warren Easton @ City Park (2:30) St. Aloysius 0 7 0 0 7 Warren Easton 0 0 0 7 7 9,000 witnessed the Crusaders’ most disappointing outing of the season in a game in which the teams combined for an incredible 20 fumbles, 10 each with Aloysius losing five and Easton seven. The Eagles stopped SA’s running attack by utilizing seven-, eight-, and nine-man lines, holding the Saders to just 47y in 39 carries for the afternoon. Aloysius got a break in the final minutes of the half when Mathews covered a fumble at the Eagle 25. Gerry Pfister scored the touchdown from the one, and Blount converted. The half ended with Easton not penetrating SA territory. Mixing passes with runs, the Eagles finally advanced past the midfield stripe in the final quarter, penetrating the 20. But a fumble ended the threat. However, the respite for the Aloysius defense was brief as a bobble gave the ball right back on the 17. From there, the Eagles finally scored with just over two minutes left in the game when QB Ronnie Alberstadt plunged over from the one. Bobby Marks kicked the tying point. Despite the tie, Aloysius, the only unbeaten AA team, stayed #1 in the state poll. Aloysius had two and a half weeks to prepare for Nicholls. In the interim, Holy Cross defeated Easton 3327. So the Crusaders controlled their own destiny. Win the remaining two games and ring up the school’s first Prep football championship. Fri., Nov. 14: Nicholls @ City Park Stadium (8:00) St. Aloysius 14 6 12 0 32 Nicholls 0 0 0 6 6 The refreshed Crusaders enjoyed their first romp since the Redemptorist game. The touchdowns were scored on a 59y pass from Blount to Huber, two runs by Nick, and one each by Neyrey and Dave Campos. Fri., Nov. 21: Fortier @ City Park Stadium (8:00) St. Aloysius 0 0 0 7 7 Fortier 6 0 0 0 6 One more win to make history, but Fortier would not be the easiest of foes. Blount fumbled on SA’s first snap, and Fortier recovered inside the 10. Karl Nebel swept into the end zone on the first play. Action swayed back and forth, the teams combining for 19 punts. As the first half wound down, the Crusaders mounted a drive deep into Tarpon territory, but time ran out with the ball less than a yard from the goal line after Schindler fell short on a dive over the middle. The third quarter saw Aloysius continue to stuff the Tarpons, holding them without a first down. But their own offense couldn’t move either. As anxious Crimson fans watched the clock wind relentlessly down, the defense finally got a turnover when Mahoney recovered a fumble at the 37. Two player later, Blount passed to Voelker who caught the

ball on the seven and ran into the end zone. Blount coolly added the go-ahead point with 2:16 on the clock. But the game wasn’t over. The Tarpons appeared to score a touchdown when Nebel lobbed a screen pass to Dan Allain, who broke out from behind his interference on a 62y journey to the end zone. A pall settled over the Aloysius stands until they saw a flag. The umpire nullified the play because of an ineligible receiver downfield. For the first time, St. Aloysius represented New Orleans in the South Louisiana playoff game. The opponent would be Istrouma, which was seeking their third straight AA crown. The site was determined by a coin flip, which Istrouma won. So the game was set for Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge. Aloysius and Istrouma had never met on the gridiron. Coach Fuzzy Brown’s Indians, making their seventh appearance in the state playoffs, boasted a 9-1-1 record. 15 chartered busses left at 1:30 pm to accompany the Crusaders to the Capital City for the game. Fri., Dec. 5: Istrouma @ BR Memorial Stadium (8:00) St. Aloysius 0 0 7 6 13 Istrouma 0 6 0 6 12 14,000 witnessed a close game on a field made muddy by earlier rains. The first scoring threat was made by the Indians, but a fourth down plunge was stopped a yard short of the first down, and Aloysius took over on their 17. After an exchange of punts, the Crusaders embarked on their first march. Blount completed three passes in between runs to reach the 13. Two Blount thrusts gained three before an Indian stepped in front of Nick’s pass in the end zone and ran it out to the 23 with three minutes left. That was enough time for Istrouma to break the scoring ice, but it didn’t happen right away. After stopping the Indians, Aloysius received a punt at the Istrouma 35. Two plays later, Blount connected with Arms for a first down on the 23. Connick gained four before lightning struck. E Gene Duke hit Blount just as he was about to pass, and the ball fell into the hands of T Paul Stevens who lumbered 77y to pay dirt with only 17 seconds on the clock. The PAT was botched. 6-0 Istrouma at the half. Aloysius finally scored in the third quarter after Neyrey fielded a punt at the SA 37, twisted and squirmed through the first rush of tacklers, headed for the sidelines, and ran to the 13 where an Indian made a TD-saving tackle. Blount skirted right end for six before Schindler gained nothing on second down. Ralph then found a hole up the middle to the two, then plunged over from there on fourth down. Blount kicked a line drive through the uprights to make it 7-6 Aloysius. That remained the score into the fourth quarter. Another Neyrey return indirectly led to a second SA touchdown. Bobby gathered in the punt near the sideline on his 36, crossed from one side to the other through a half dozen Indians before being turned inside and stopped at the 20. Three Blount runs put the ball on the two. But Schindler’s fourth down plunge fell a foot short. With only three minutes left, Istrouma QB Winton Turner threw two daring passes from behind his goal with Saints swarming over him before Neyrey struck again, intercepting the third pass and running 15y to

Holy Cross-Aloysius action. Eddie Arms (33) carries the ball for Aloysius. the end zone. Blount’s kick sailed wide to keep the score at 13-6 with 2:45 on the clock. The Istrouma passing attack finally got untracked. From his 37, the future LSU quarterback fired down the middle to Tommy Bell to the SA 48. After two incompletions, Turner, hiding the ball on his hip, ran to his right, stopped, and passed to the opposite side of the field to Dick Jamison who caught the ball on the 20 and was downed on the 14. Two snaps later, Win passed to E Gene Duke on the eight with less than 45 seconds remaining. Connick then batted down a pass in the end zone. On fourth down, Turner again ran to his right and lofted a high floater back to the left side to Jamison all alone in the end zone. Turner’s attempt at the tying PAT sailed wide left. The Istrouma fans were crestfallen, but it would have made no difference in the outcome because Aloysius led in both penetrations and first downs. The South Louisiana champion Crusaders won the coin flip to host the North Louisiana winners from Fair Park in Shreveport. These Indians were intent on ending their four-game losing streak in state finals. Their undisputed leader was HB/LB Tommy Davis, who was destined to play a key role on LSU’s 1958 National Championship team and spend eleven seasons as a kicker-punter in the NFL. Fri., Dec. 12: Fair Park @ City Park Stadium (8:00) St. Aloysius 0 0 0 0 0 Fair Park 0 0 6 14 20 15,000 saw the visitors take to the air in the second half to break out of a scoreless tie. The Saints contained Davis - 83y on 20 carries. So they won that battle but lost the war. First downs were hard to come by for both sides, and neither came close to scoring in the first half. The Indians mounted a 52y touchdown march on their first possession of the third quarter. An 18y pass put the ball on the SA 27. Two snaps later, Davis rambled for his best gain of the evening, 18y to the 13. With the Crusaders in an eight-man line, QB Gene Saur threw to HB A. L. Williams who made a great leaping catch in the end zone. Davis’s PAT misfired. 6-0 Fair Park. The Indians dominated the fourth quarter against the weary Saints. Their first possession resulted in a 35y scoring pass from Sauer to Williams again. Down 13-0, Aloysius had to pass but without success. Fair Park removed all doubt with another Saur to Williams touchdown pass to make it 20-0. The defeat did not tarnish the luster of the greatest football season in Aloysius history from 1921-52.
