Advancement and Alumni Relations
Message from Kenny Spellman ’84
It has been my great privilage to serve as Alumni Director since 2003. I am forever grateful to my friend Nick Lagattuta ’71 for inviting me to follow him in this role. I had the great honor working side by side with Brother Jean Sobert, S.C., Sister Joan LaPlace, John Devlin, Julia Gandolfi and others. I learned a great deal which assisted me in preparing for my current role as Director of Advancement. Many of you have asked Chris Heine ’03 and I exactly what we do. Simply put we are in the world of friendraising and fundraising. While we both are involved in friendraising and fundraising, my main focus will now turn to “advancing” the mission of Brother Martin High School. I like to say I get to tell our story and provide you the opportunity to assist in any way you can: your time, talent, or treasure. I welcome you to visit campus or contact me at (504) 284-6700 or email me at kspellman@brothermartin.com
Message from Chris Heine ’03
As I have embarked on this new role as Director of Alumni Relations, I have already had the opportunity to build relationships with our Alumni. Kenny Spellman ’84 and I work together every day to ensure that our Alumni are informed and engaged. I ask that you share your successes with us so that we can share your story with our Community. I look forward to continuing to friendraise and welcome Alumni back to campus. You can contact me at cheine@brothermartin.com. Yes, I am the guy that sends all the emails.
Alumni Giving 2024
Our second semester of our 55th year is underway, and I invite you to join us as we continue to “Educate Young Men for Life.”
Our Alumni Appeal is also underway and will culminate with Martin Madness, March 19-21, which includes our class competition.
You may direct your gift as you like. Most donors select to donate to the Brother Martin Fund, which funds the students’ greatest needs. For additional options visit www.brothermartin.com/giving/scholarships or www.brothermartin.com/giving/endowments.
If you have any questions, then please contact me at (504) 284-6700, email kspellman@brothermartin.com, or schedule a visit.
Thank you for your consideration, and Go Crusaders!
Sincerely,
Kenny Spellman ’84 Director of Advancement

Brother Martin High School honored the Venerable Brother Hippolyte Polycarp on January 9th, 2024 on the anniversary of his death.
Jean-Hippolyte Gondre, a member of a humble and devout family from La Motte-en-Champsaur, France, became Brother Polycarp when he joined the Institute of Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1827. Considered the “Second Founder,” he was responsible for the initial growth of the order in southern France. As the first Brother Superior General, he promoted the missionary work of the Institute in the Americas, recruiting five brothers to travel to Mobile, Alabama, in 1847, which later led to the opening of St. Aloysius in New Orleans in 1869. By the time of his death in 1859, the Institute had grown to over 400 Brothers in 70 schools.
His cause for canonization has been proceeding since 1902. In February 1984, Polycarp was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II. In his announcement, Pope John Paul II declared: “Brother Polycarp was genuinely and constantly heroic in his practice of all the virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity towards both God and neighbor, as well as the cardinal virtues of Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude.” We honor Brother Polycarp in the front reception area of our campus alongside Brothers of the Sacred Heart Founder, Father André Coindre, and our school’s namesake, Brother Martin Hernandez.

The artwork by Derek Cummiskey ’85 is a redesign of a donation made to the “Elysian Fields Forever” event last fall. The concept of looking through a glass shield came from artwork that he conceived a few years ago as a gala patron party gift for Christian Brothers School, where he has taught for the last fourteen years. Having been a Visual Arts teacher at Mount Carmel Academy for the first thirteen years of his career in education, he owes a great deal of credit and gratitude to the “amazing and incomparable” Randy Asprodites ’65 SA, who taught Derek at Brother Martin. Aside from his teaching duties at Christian Brothers, he is the cross country coach and still does mostly commissioned artwork on the side.
Duval “Duvy” Salvant ’13
The Brother Martin High School Band welcomed Duval “Duvy” Salvant ’13, Director of Bands for Mississippi College, as well as the Mississippi College Band to campus for a series of Symphonic Winds performances. SACRE COEUR SOCIETY EST. 2020
The following notice appeared in the March 4, 1967, edition of The Times-Picayune under the byline of prep writer John Joly.
Nick Revon, former St. Aloysius and University of Southern Mississippi athletic great, has resigned his position as head varsity basketball coach at St. Aloysius High School …
One of the finest athletes ever developed in the city, Revon was not immediately available for comment on the reasons for his leaving the Crusader post, which he has held since May of 1964, but school officials indicated he has resigned for personal reasons.
“We have accepted with deep regret the resignation of Mr. Revon,” announced Brother Flavian, S.C., principal of St. Aloysius. “We respect him as an outstanding player and coach and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavors” …
Applications for the position left vacant by Revon’s resignation are now being accepted, and all persons interested in the position may either write or contact Athletic Director William “Billy” Arms at the school.
Despite his second squad reaching the state semifinals, the general feeling was that Revon’s Crusader teams underachieved. Half of the 20 defeats came at the hands of the two teams that dominated Catholic League play, Jesuit and De La Salle (five losses to each).
Revon’s three-year record might have earned him a raise at many other schools. But St. Aloysius boasted one of the best basketball traditions in the state of Louisiana. The school was founded in the French Quarter by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1869. It moved to the corner of Esplanade Avenue and Rampart Street in 1892.
Change By Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ
Prep School Basketball League crown in a playoff with Jesuit after the two schools tied at the end of the round-robin schedule. “The largest crowd that ever attended a Prep School game was on hand.”
The school received a boost athletically as well as financially when it moved into a new building in 1925 that was set back on the same location at Rampart and Esplanade. The expanded enrollment enabled Aloysius to move to an even higher level of success on the court.
The 1936-37 Crusaders under Coach Monk Zelden won the school’s first city championship since 1920 and competed in the state playoffs for the first time, losing in the semifinals to Coushatta.
The following season, the Aloysius basketball program got a shot in the arm with the dedication of the new gymnasium, widely regarded as the finest high school facility in the city. The Crimson Knights defended their city crown but lost in the second round of the state playoffs at LSU.
After second and third place finishes in the Prep league the next two years, the Crusaders returned to the top in 1941 under the tutelage of Brother Ralph McGarry. Aloysius won the school’s first state championship in any sport, defeating Ouachita in the finals by 15 points, 40-25.
Rouge by his provincial superior. So Brother Martin hired 26-year-old Johnny Altobello, fresh out of the Navy after playing multiple sports at Warren Easton and Loyola University.
To say that Johnny started his Louisiana High School Hall of Fame coaching career with a bang would be an understatement. Inheriting what Brother Ralph called “the best basketball team since I have been at St. Aloysius,” Johnny led the Crusaders to the state championship. The Crimson juggernaut outscored opponents by an average of 56 to 24, losing only one game.
The next season, Revon again led the league in scoring, but the Crusaders were upset in the state semifinals by Holy Cross 55-42 after defeating the Tigers twice in Prep play.
1948-49 saw Aloysius return to the top despite Revon’s departure. Led by young stars Dick Brennan and Hal Cervini, the Crusaders won all 18 games they played including a 36-30 revenge victory over Holy Cross in the state finals.
The first Crusader basketball team of the 1950s was outstanding but ran afoul of one of the greatest players Louisiana has turned out. Aloysius won its fourth straight city championship and made the state semifinals for the seventh straight year but fell in the finals to Baton Rouge High 54-41. The Bulldogs were led by Bob Pettit, who scored 23 points. Pettit would go on to star at LSU and forge a Hall of Fame career in the NBA.
While the Crusader football team didn’t win a city title until 1952 in its 31st year on the gridiron, the Saints’ roundball teams started winning championships in 1919 and were consistently competitive against larger schools like Jesuit and Warren Easton. In 1916, Aloysius won both the 55-inch and Unlimited Class Catholic school championships. The 1919 Aloysius “cagers” won the
New Orleans put two teams in the state finals in 1945. Aloysius, with a sensational 14-year-old named Nick Revon in the starting lineup, met Holy Cross in Baton Rouge but lost to the Tigers for the third time that season, 46-30.
The St. Aloysius community was rocked over the summer of 1946 by the news that Brother Ralph had been transferred to Catholic High in Baton
Brennan and Cervini moved on to Tulane, but the Aloysius machine continued running on all cylinders – prep champions for the sixth straight time and state AA kings thanks to an exciting comeback in the finals that saw the Crusaders overcome an 18-point first-half deficit to overtake Bolton 52-50 for the Crimsons’ third state title in a row.
Then came another shocker. Altobello decided to accept an offer from three-year-old De La Salle High School to become its basketball and baseball coach.

JV coach M. L. Lagarde (St. Aloysius ’45) became the next head basketball and baseball coach at his alma mater. Blessed with talent in both sports from Altobello’s reign, Lagarde guided the Crusaders to their seventh Prep championship in a row and another state title.
That streak ended the next season. Still, the 195354 Crusaders made the final four in Shreveport, where they fell to Byrd 47-46. At the end of June, Lagarde left to become basketball and baseball head coach at Jesuit.
After two one-year coaches the next two years, stability returned to the Aloysius program with the hiring of Ernie Smith for 1957-58. Ernie immediately made the Crusaders competitive again, with Altobello’s Cavaliers the chief rival. The two teams met seven times, culminating in the state championship at Loyola Field House before a crowd estimated at 6,000, the largest ever to see a prep basketball game in Louisiana. The officials from Shreveport called 67 fouls as De La Salle won easily 78-53.
The Crusaders regained the district crown in 1961. Aloysius breezed through its first two playoff games before losing to La Grange 58-50 in the semifinals in Shreveport.
After one more season, Ernie Smith took the head coaching job at St. Joseph College in New Mexico. He left behind a sterling 151-23 record at St. Aloysius.
Don Landry led the Crusaders to the playoffs
his first year but not his second. When he left to become a college assistant, principal Brother Lee Barker turned to one of the most famous athletes in Crusader history – “The Cat,” Nick Revon.
Nick’s first Crusader team won 18 and lost six, good enough for third in district. Aloysius fans eagerly anticipated Revon’s second season when he could field an all-senior starting five.
The Crusaders lost the District Playoff to Jesuit 5351 on a last second shot. Nevertheless, the Saints made the state playoffs for the first time in five years. After a first round bye, they defeated Byrd 55-48 in Shreveport gmaito earn a berth in the AAA Final Four in Lafayette, where they lost a tight game to Lafayette 54-52.
The 1966-67 Crusaders compiled a record of 19-9 in what would be Revon’s last year.
That brings us back to where we began with the dismissal of Revon.
The day after his article announcing Revon’s resignation in May 1967, Times-Picayune prep writer John Joly speculated in his Prep Parade column about Revon’s replacement. The man Aloysius hired to replace Revon wasn’t on Joly’s list or anyone else’s.
Athletic Director Bill Arms coached in Lafayette before taking the head football position at his alma mater in New Orleans in 1963. He asked a contact in Cajun country if there were any promising young coaches in that area. The name he received was Andy Russo, the 26-year-old coach at Our Lady
of Fatima High in Lafayette, a Class B school. His teams there made the quarterfinals of the state playoffs twice in his three years as head man.
Growing up in uptown New Orleans, Russo went to Fortier High School where he played for an outstanding coach, Monk Clavier. Andy quarterbacked in football, played first base and pitched in baseball, and went to the state finals in the high hurdles his senior year. But basketball remained his best sport as evidenced by his AAA All-State first team selection as a senior on Clavier’s state runners-up.
Andy played two years at Central Florida Junior College, where he averaged 24.1 points per game as a sophomore. Wanting to play closer to home, Andy accepted a scholarship to the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) in Lafayette, where he earned two letters under Coach Beryl Shipley and made the All-Gulf State Conference team. He captained the Ragin’ Cajuns his senior year (1963).
Russo’s hiring started the most successful era in Crusader basketball history, which carried over to Brother Martin after the merger with Cor Jesu in 1969-70.
This article is a condensed version of the first chapter of a book on Crusader Basketball 1967-74 which hopefully will be published in 2025.
