For decades researchers and activists have struggled to get world leaders to take the climate threat seriously. In 2018, the photographer Adam Karls Johansson captured the image above of a lonely girl protesting outside the Parliament of Sweden with her handwritten board. He tried to sell the image to a known 6ZHGLVK PDJD]LQH EXW WKH HGLWRU LQ FKLHI GHFOLQHG WKLQNLQJ WKDW this strike would soon die out. Johansson remembers how grownups hurried by the young girl without even noticing her. This clearly emphasises Thunberg’s message that so many just carry on as before without reflecting on the consequences. Sixteen months later she was made TIME's Person of the Year.
