What you have learned about formal and informal situations and language will also help you choose a suitable text type to get your message across. The more you adapt your language and form to the situation, the more likely you are to communicate successfully. As the table on page 69 illustrates, there are many language features to consider in formal or informal communication. In addition, it is important to choose the appropriate text type for your purpose. You will find numerous examples of both formal and informal texts throughout this textbook. TEXT TYPE CHART For further help, the text type chart is an overview of some of the text types you might encounter in everyday life. It tells whether the text requires formal language, whether the form of the text is fixed and whether this is the type of text that can be planned in advance.
