Explanation or supporting argument Example or quote “Don’t Panic” says The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, written by the well-known British author Douglas Adams (in Aanensen & Holck, 2020). This sums up the famous British mentality to “keep calm and carry on”. The British Empire at one time covered one quarter of the globe, and as a result the English language and the British culture have gone global. Norwegians tend to feel connected to the British, as we are quite close to the British Isles and many have grown up being influenced by British culture, for instance, through British TV shows and music. What does it mean to be British, and what can we learn from British culture? This essay will discuss life in the UK in relation to culture, social issues and workplace culture. The British are known for their politeness, stiff upper lip and ability to keep calm and carry on in the most challenging situations. Generally, one might say that this attitude can come in handy when you, for instance, colonise a quarter of the earth and then lose it. As stated by Sir Winston Churchill in 1914, “The maxim of the British people is ‘Business as usual’” (in Aanensen & Holck, 2020). On the other hand, some would claim that the British stiff upper lip has negative effects as well. For instance, the Heads Together campaign features conversations with the royal family about speaking out about mental health issues and not keeping the stiff upper lip. All in all, however, “keep calm and carry on” is still regarded as typically British.

Explanation or supporting argument Britain is traditionally a class-based society, and this has been known to cause conflict. Overall, class is apparent in everything from work to school and even to the sports people play and
labeled as merket som attend. For instance, tennis is often labelled as an upper / merkt som class sport, while football is said to be entertainment for the working class (Aanensen & Holck, 2020). However, class may be more complex in modern Britain than it has been before. For instance, the higher educated might not find well-paying jobs, and the lower class is made up now of three different classes instead of one (Aanensen & Holck, 2020). Nevertheless, the traditional class system is still widely recognised in the UK. British politeness and resilience can be a great addition to the workplace. As a result, learning how to act like the British can be a good strategy for the future. For instance, learning how to respond with polite phrases such as “thank you” and “please” can improve relations between coworkers. However, some might argue that the politeness could at times be perceived as somewhat impersonal and too informal. Nonetheless, being polite and resilient like the British is valued by both colleagues and leaders. To summarise, this essay has discussed life in the UK in relation to culture, social issues and workplace culture.
