“Don’t Panic” says The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, written by the well-known British author Douglas Adams (in Aanensen & Holck, 2020). This sums up the famous British mentality to “keep calm and carry on”. The British Empire at one time covered one quarter of the globe, and as a result the English language and the British culture have gone global. Norwegians tend to feel connected to the British, as we are quite close to the British Isles and many have grown up being influenced by British culture, for instance, through British TV shows and music. What does it mean to be British, and what can we learn from British culture? This essay will discuss life in the UK in relation to culture, social issues and workplace culture.

The British are known for their politeness, stiff upper lip and ability to keep calm and carry on in the most challenging situations. Generally, one might say that this attitude can come in handy when you, for instance, colonise a quarter of the earth and then lose it. As stated by Sir Winston Churchill in 1914, “The maxim of the British people is ‘Business as usual’” (in Aanensen & Holck, 2020). On the other hand, some would claim that the British stiff upper lip has negative effects as well. For instance, the Heads Together campaign features conversations with the royal family about speaking out about mental health issues and not keeping the stiff upper lip. All in all, however, “keep calm and carry on” is still regarded as typically British.
